1990 West Germany England 2/2
Transcript
00:00:04Argenthaler, some space for him to exploit, Gascoigne's coming across to try and cut it off.
00:00:11He can get it back off Riedler, then hits an impossible ball for Riedler to control,
00:00:15and England can come forward again with Peter Biersley.
00:00:18Here's Lineker.
00:00:23And what's they're going to give there? They're going to give a free kick or they're going to give a
00:00:25throw?
00:00:30And Kola helps bring Lineker to his feet, and it really, the game continues to play and be played in
00:00:35an excellent spirit.
00:00:37It's Waddle, twisting and turning, gets that extra yard, flat on the far side, it won't reach him.
00:00:42It's Riedler now for the West Germans.
00:00:45Hessler.
00:00:47Here's a break now by Buchwald.
00:00:50Light going across to cut off the danger, but he finds Riedler.
00:00:55And now Matthäus, could be real problems here for England.
00:00:58Played back again for Tone, hit with great ball, but wide of the English goal, well wide too.
00:01:09I'll say, Brian, I think Riedler's made a hell of a difference to the side.
00:01:12He's infectious, his movement is great, he's very, very quick.
00:01:16He was very much an architect in the start of this movement.
00:01:20But what is happening now, the midfield players, Tone, Hassler and Matthäus are absolutely running all over us in midfield.
00:01:28We've somehow or other got to get more resistance in there.
00:01:30Whether it means Pearce and Parker have got to push in and help the Gascoines and the Platts,
00:01:35where the Beardsley's got to drop out a little bit, where the Waddle's got to do a little bit more
00:01:38digging out.
00:01:39But certainly at the moment, you've set all hands to the pump.
00:01:42We've got to try and win more possession in midfield, and we're just getting overwhelmed in that.
00:01:47It's a free kick for England.
00:01:48Paul Parker just looking forward here for Waddle.
00:01:53Beardsley coming off his man.
00:01:56Again.
00:01:59Losing out to Matthäus.
00:02:01Hurdles over the challenge of Butcher.
00:02:03The ball just staying in play, but Walker going across there.
00:02:06He's got past Walker as well.
00:02:07This is a real problem.
00:02:08Matthäus then slips, and Waddle coming back to defend.
00:02:12Platte coming back to defend.
00:02:14And England sigh, a huge sigh of relief.
00:02:17Seeing Matthäus in that strong position,
00:02:20and getting the better of two main English defenders,
00:02:22was a real, real big problem.
00:02:25It's Bremer now, for the West Germans.
00:02:28Floating it in once more.
00:02:29Goes beyond Klinsmann,
00:02:31and Wright sticks out the foot and gets that one away.
00:02:33Up goes Beardsley.
00:02:34Up he goes again.
00:02:37But Hessler comes away with it for the West Germans.
00:02:40Dummies right.
00:02:43There's a foul on him by Pearce,
00:02:45and a free kick to the West Germans.
00:02:46Three yards outside the penalty area.
00:02:48Four yards maybe.
00:02:50But dangerously, dangerously close.
00:02:58Well, Bremer curls an excellent free kick.
00:03:02Hessler still down from that challenge by Stuart Pearce.
00:03:08I think this is the exact...
00:03:09Was it against France in the last semi-final?
00:03:11In 86, he scored a...
00:03:12One that crept in the net from...
00:03:14I think this was the exact same position for Bremer.
00:03:18Just to hark back before they take this one,
00:03:20what a marvellous piece of athleticism that was from Matthias.
00:03:24This is the free kick coming up here,
00:03:26where Pearce has just had to throw himself in.
00:03:29Just clipped him, no more.
00:03:30Yeah.
00:03:32Can't believe that piece when Matthias went down the left wing
00:03:36and still had the pace to do Des Walker, of all people, at the end.
00:03:43Schiltern takes a quick sweep from a bottle at the back of the goal.
00:03:47Germans have been doing likewise
00:03:48while Hessler's been getting his treatments.
00:03:51And now comes the big, dangerous moment for England.
00:04:02Bremer's there.
00:04:04Might try and knock it sideways.
00:04:06Bremer's got a marvellous curling free kick.
00:04:09Curled off.
00:04:11And in!
00:04:13England behind.
00:04:14It came off a defender.
00:04:16But Andy Bremer and Schiltern shows his disgust.
00:04:24Well, that was terrible bad luck for England.
00:04:27It looked as though they'd covered all the angles.
00:04:30And the West Germans are in the lead.
00:04:36Ron Atkinson.
00:04:37Well, you can sense it's been coming.
00:04:39You know this fella, this is always love.
00:04:40It's a bit unlucky.
00:04:41It's just called Parker.
00:04:43He's backpedalling.
00:04:44Maybe, maybe five years ago,
00:04:46the old man himself might have just got a little bit of extra spring.
00:04:48But that's a horrible thing to happen to a keeper.
00:04:51He's legislated for the full-blooded shot.
00:04:53All of a sudden, he finds it's having a backpedal.
00:04:57But it was suddenly, Brian, in all fairness,
00:04:59you could all...
00:05:00Waddle to Beertley!
00:05:02It was something you could all sense was on the cards, wasn't it?
00:05:05They've gone up a gear.
00:05:08One more look at it.
00:05:10Ron.
00:05:11Yes.
00:05:12Parker really attacking the ball there.
00:05:14And that's a real bit of bad luck there.
00:05:16But Schiltern just caught that fraction in no man's land.
00:05:20And just look at the joy.
00:05:22That'll show you how much they were worried about England.
00:05:28Beckham-Bass, for so long as a German manager,
00:05:30was so cool and unmoved about everything.
00:05:32And now he just shows his feelings at every moment through 90.
00:05:40And West Germany then leading a goal to nil.
00:05:43England with serious work to be done as Matthias breaks again.
00:05:47Long-range shot, but well wide of Schiltern's goal.
00:05:49I think this is where a manager gets paid his money now.
00:05:52Bobby Robson's got a very much of a decision to make.
00:05:54If it were me out there now,
00:05:56and obviously we haven't got to make that decision,
00:05:59I would make changes now.
00:06:01Straight away, you've got to stiffen the midfield.
00:06:03If we don't, this could be a rout.
00:06:06We've got to get people in there that can at least win it
00:06:08and give Beardsley and give Lineker the service
00:06:10they were getting early on in the first half.
00:06:15Beardsley, but the header goes, well, it goes to Butcher.
00:06:18Barker.
00:06:19Unlucky to get that touch on that free kick.
00:06:23Right.
00:06:25I mean, Brody, the boys at the back,
00:06:27the five recognised defenders,
00:06:28they've stuck it bravely,
00:06:30they've won challenges, they've put the foot in.
00:06:32I mean, there was a first-class example of the free kick
00:06:34when Pearce had to go and permit himself.
00:06:36But they must know themselves that the Germans
00:06:38they just keep continually pouring at them.
00:06:43Gascoigne,
00:06:44racking away down that lift rank.
00:06:46Ball stays in grey, no it doesn't.
00:06:49It's a free kick being given to...
00:06:52to England.
00:06:56A foul on Gascoigne.
00:06:59Butch is up for this one.
00:07:00Pratt's in there, Lineker's in there.
00:07:02Right has come up from the back as well.
00:07:04There's a real clutch of white shirts now
00:07:06in that West-German penalty area,
00:07:08seeking an equaliser as Gascoigne knocks it in there.
00:07:10And just wide from Mark Wright and Pearce both up there.
00:07:16Pearce who probably got the touch,
00:07:18but a wicked curling free kick.
00:07:22And England very close to getting back on terms.
00:07:25Yeah, there's that ugly curling ball he knocks in.
00:07:29So, well, I must confess I thought that was a goal,
00:07:31and Pearce a good front-post touch.
00:07:35So who would you bring on, Ron,
00:07:36if you were down there on the bench now?
00:07:39Straight away, I'd bring Terry off,
00:07:41Big Terry Butcher.
00:07:42I'd do the same thing as they did in the previous game.
00:07:45I'd put Steven on, put Parker into a central area,
00:07:48marking with Walker, leave right spare at the back,
00:07:50and try and get some resistance from there,
00:07:52with a view, if it didn't change it,
00:07:54with a view to putting McMahon and very, very shortly afterwards.
00:07:59I mean, that's encouraging,
00:08:00at least we've managed to take the game to them a little bit.
00:08:02When we do that, we look far better.
00:08:05They look vulnerable when you attack them,
00:08:06but at the moment we can't get enough good ball.
00:08:10Here's Parker.
00:08:19I think what worries me when we play the midfield we've got at the moment,
00:08:22when things go against us, with the exception of young Platy,
00:08:25we do tend to be a bit short of energy.
00:08:27Here's Gascoigne.
00:08:29That's a free kick.
00:08:32And now we have a situation just outside the penalty,
00:08:35just as the Germans did two or three minutes ago.
00:08:40Well, we've seen Pierce
00:08:46hit tremendous free kicks from this sort of range.
00:08:53Butler will be in there, no doubt.
00:08:55There's that little trigger Gazzas again, though, wasn't it,
00:08:57when he went at the defender.
00:08:58Went at it with a few to,
00:09:00maybe at least if he didn't get past,
00:09:02we were going to get something out of it.
00:09:06If that was obstruction, it's an indirect,
00:09:08but the referee is not as easy.
00:09:10Is he indicating...
00:09:11I'm not sure he is indicating an indirect, is he?
00:09:14No.
00:09:15He's trying to get the line back.
00:09:18Certainly hasn't signalled the indirect.
00:09:21Well, let's see what Gascoigne can do here.
00:09:23Hits it straight into the wall.
00:09:24Parker first reacts.
00:09:26Getting some help there from Butcher,
00:09:28but it was a nasty challenge there.
00:09:30At least it looked worse probably than it was on Buchwald.
00:09:34And Parker's going to get a yellow card.
00:09:36Yeah, I think he's made a meal of his football.
00:09:38I can't believe it.
00:09:39He's about six foot two.
00:09:40Little this fellow on the field's had a go at him.
00:09:43I think if you see a replay on that,
00:09:44I'd be amazed if that's anything like as severe as the Germans made it.
00:09:48That's something the Germans...
00:09:50Here we are.
00:09:52I'll tell you what,
00:09:52he must get hit harder than that in practice matches.
00:09:57Free kick to the West Germans.
00:10:03There's a surprise.
00:10:05He's up and running.
00:10:1325 minutes of the game left.
00:10:19I don't know whether Bremner's got a bit of a problem, though,
00:10:21because I noticed Reuters...
00:10:23Yeah, Stefan Reuter number two warming up on the...
00:10:29It looks as though he might be coming on any time.
00:10:33Algenthaler.
00:10:34The West Germans ahead, leading by a goal to nil.
00:10:40Yes.
00:10:42Hit long towards Beardsley.
00:10:44Beaten in the air by Buchwald.
00:10:48Stabbed forward there by Algenthaler.
00:10:51To Hessler.
00:10:53Here's Bremner.
00:10:54Hessler's coming off, Brian.
00:10:57Reuters going on in place of Hessler, by the look of it.
00:11:01Here's Buchwald.
00:11:05Argenthaler.
00:11:09Here's Hessler.
00:11:11If so, one of his last touches.
00:11:13Tanging there with Paul Parker.
00:11:15And...
00:11:16Free kick given to the West Germans.
00:11:18And indeed, Hessler now comes off.
00:11:21Who's been so lively and spiky,
00:11:24almost doing it fastly fashion through that midfield.
00:11:28And now being replaced by...
00:11:31A right-back who likes to get forward now.
00:11:35Berthold has been in that sort of position for most of the evening.
00:11:40And Trevor Stephen warming up for England.
00:11:49Bremner with the free kick.
00:11:53Algenthaler.
00:11:54Will Pearce get there first?
00:11:56Gascoigne takes it off.
00:12:00And tries to get...
00:12:03England going here now.
00:12:04And suddenly, it looked as though Waddle...
00:12:08Was going to be right through that West German defence.
00:12:12Absolutely brilliant running off the ball by Chrissie Waddle there.
00:12:15I mean, you look to see him do that.
00:12:17He's so penetrating when he does that.
00:12:19Nearly when he's up with a...
00:12:20I mean, it was a good penetrating pass from Gascoigne.
00:12:24Here's Beardsley with the corner for England.
00:12:28Driven towards Platt.
00:12:29Didn't quite reach him, though.
00:12:30Wiedler got it away.
00:12:31Gascoigne plays it wide again towards Peter Beardsley.
00:12:34Played in first time towards Lenniker.
00:12:36That time, Curler was there for the West Germans.
00:12:38But another throw to England.
00:12:40We've actually been a bit unlucky there.
00:12:42There he just overrun.
00:12:44Just can't get his first touch right.
00:12:45Waddle has been clean in on goal.
00:12:47We've actually crossed some very, very good balls there.
00:12:50Halfway through the second half.
00:12:51Beardsley finding Waddle.
00:12:54Down he goes.
00:12:55No penalty.
00:12:57And Bremer gets it away.
00:13:01Matthias.
00:13:01One of those surging, driving runs of his from the midfield.
00:13:05At that time, Wright was equal to it.
00:13:08Schiltern coming a long way out.
00:13:10And then makes Shaw.
00:13:13Just over halfway through the second half.
00:13:19I said in the first half, I couldn't believe how we'd left Matthias.
00:13:22And he hadn't really bothered us.
00:13:24He'd just played a steady sort of a game in midfield.
00:13:26But now we're seeing the real Matthias exploding, leaving people for dead in the midfield.
00:13:37The referee said no penalty.
00:13:39Bremer at the other end.
00:13:41It's a corner of Paul Parker.
00:13:43The referee's in a great spot there, incidentally.
00:13:45He's only about four yards after that penalty situation.
00:13:47But he did appear just to catch his back of it.
00:13:55Bremer with it.
00:13:58Riedler in there.
00:13:59Airtold in there.
00:14:01Played wide towards Matthias.
00:14:02England get it away again.
00:14:04Lineker first to react.
00:14:08And then finds Beardsley.
00:14:12Pearce.
00:14:16Shrugging off all challenges now, Stuart Pearce.
00:14:18Wanting to go all the way.
00:14:19Leaving a certain amount of debris on the way as well.
00:14:25And it's a free kick given to England.
00:14:28And Alcantara arguing the point.
00:14:31And Mr. Wright from Brazil.
00:14:3445-year-old teacher having none of it.
00:14:37Pearce really going all the way there.
00:14:40Winning the free kick.
00:14:42Trevor Stevens soon to come on.
00:14:44And it'll be Terry Butcher who comes off.
00:14:48And there are just 20 minutes of this game left now for England to save themselves and look for a
00:14:56place in the World Cup final.
00:15:03Off comes Butcher.
00:15:05He's done a man-sized job at the back there tonight.
00:15:08In comes Trevor Stevens who was so successful in the later stages against Cameroon down the right-hand flank.
00:15:13In the meantime England now with just something of a chance here.
00:15:17Waddle and Gascoigne over it trying to work a bit of wizardry.
00:15:20Or will it be just the straightforward blast by Stuart Pearce?
00:15:25The referee wants the wall back the full 10 yards and I'm not sure that they are.
00:15:31Made to Pearce.
00:15:32Shot's charged down.
00:15:33Trevor Stevens with his flash shot.
00:15:37That could have been a really dramatic entry.
00:15:39Well that would have been something out of the comics wouldn't it if Steven had scored there.
00:15:43Give a decision actually again the referee.
00:15:46Possible offside.
00:15:4919 minutes left.
00:15:50England a goal down.
00:16:03And to Hisoner.
00:16:12Prima.
00:16:15We've actually gone, we're playing with a flat back four now.
00:16:18We've dispensed with the sweeper, well a little bit.
00:16:19It looks as if he's going to keep just right and Walker as the normal centre-halves, keep Parker tucked
00:16:23in in his right full-back position, and push Stephen in an orthodox right-sided mid-floor position.
00:16:32Free kick to England, the foul by Reid on Walker.
00:16:46Waddle, to Parker.
00:16:53Stephen to Parker, and now to right.
00:16:59Walker, Waddle.
00:17:02And then Shilton left behind.
00:17:06There's Gascoigne with the header, but really walking back across the six-yard area.
00:17:12That was a beating ball from Waddle.
00:17:15Gascoigne had taken up a very, very good position in the second post.
00:17:20As you say, it's one of those, you can't go for goal from there.
00:17:23You've got to just try and keep it in the danger here.
00:17:25Just try and nut it back across and hope that somebody, Lineker or Platt.
00:17:28I don't think he was, in an actual fact, going for a goal there.
00:17:30I think it was just one of those you just couldn't get above the ball.
00:17:34Stephen nicely killed, but Beardsley just offside.
00:17:39All of a sudden, though, just by reverting to a little bit more of a solid midfield, we seem to
00:17:43be getting a little bit more ball.
00:17:45We seem to be able to build up attacks on them.
00:17:47That's exactly what happened in the Cameroon game.
00:17:53Still 17 minutes left.
00:18:02Matthias.
00:18:04Piers in quickly to stop Berthold.
00:18:10He's certainly one that will be happier with a four-man midfield, Piers, because then he can play like he
00:18:14does at Forest, orthodox left-back.
00:18:21Now, right-up.
00:18:26It's a goal kick.
00:18:28Now it's a corner.
00:18:29It just came off Stuart Pearce.
00:18:43And Matthias going across to take it.
00:18:46One thing that concerns me about these corners that the Germans have, they invariably look for big outswingers, but they
00:18:53always leave people outside the box.
00:18:54It was Hassler in the first half.
00:18:56And Bremer's there now.
00:18:57And Bremer's going to look to catch this.
00:19:00And it's over the top.
00:19:01That's what I'm thinking about there, Brian.
00:19:03What we do, we tend to take everybody back into the box without really picking up people.
00:19:07I'd like to see somebody like Mark Wright, or whoever's the man with authority now, push people out for the
00:19:12eventuality of this sort of thing.
00:19:15So, Bremer with time to control it.
00:19:20But not troubling Schilter.
00:19:23Clearly, Ruchwald.
00:19:26It's Parker.
00:19:28Misdirecting his header there, but Walker was there in good support, as he always is.
00:19:33As scoring to Walker, now to Parker.
00:19:36And now to Steven.
00:19:38Lineker trying to come off his man.
00:19:41And a foul on Lineker.
00:19:43Kerler says that he played the ball, but the linesman and referee are as one.
00:19:49And have offered the England the free kick.
00:19:52Starting to get encouraging in, you know, Branagh.
00:19:55We're starting to get forward.
00:19:56We're starting to be able to put pressure upon.
00:19:58What I, what for me, is the weakest part of the German side, the defence.
00:20:01I don't think they're a great defensive side at all.
00:20:03Well, now let's see what Waddle can do with this free kick.
00:20:05Wright's up from the back.
00:20:06Lineker's in there.
00:20:07Pearce is up there too.
00:20:08Platt's in there.
00:20:10Stevens, well, forward in there.
00:20:12Wright tried to get a glance on it.
00:20:15And a free kick given to the West Germans.
00:20:18Still to come on ITV tonight.
00:20:19The climax, of course, to this World Cup semi-final.
00:20:22Followed by Coronation Street.
00:20:58Right, with a header, but this time he was pushing down on Klinsmann.
00:21:07He's been kept fairly quiet tonight.
00:21:08Yeah, I was just about to say that's a tribute to the way the central defenders have played.
00:21:11But Klinsmann's looked very ordinary.
00:21:14In fact, Volo looked ordinary.
00:21:15It's the substitute that made the big difference, Riedel.
00:21:19And the fact that they did up the pace in that crucial first quarter of an hour in the second
00:21:23half for West Germans.
00:21:25Really got themselves going.
00:21:26Here's Bertrand.
00:21:30Bremer.
00:21:30Might have shown too much of that to Parker.
00:21:32No, he didn't.
00:21:34Bremer's down injured.
00:21:35It's with Tone.
00:21:37Finding Buchwald.
00:21:39It did look a rather rash challenge there by Parker, actually.
00:21:43Reuter.
00:21:47And they played it away in the touch so that Bremer can get some treatment.
00:21:51And the referee going across to have a whirl with Parker.
00:21:53Parker significantly, in fact, he took the ball.
00:21:58Once again, didn't look over committed.
00:22:01It's supposed to be a big, strong lad.
00:22:06Well, of course, all these things are taking time and soaking up the minutes that remain for England to find
00:22:11this equaliser.
00:22:12On my watch, about 12 and a half to go.
00:22:17And I would think that the England manager, Bobby Robson, must now be wondering just whether there is one last
00:22:23card to be played.
00:22:26You wouldn't back against it, would you?
00:22:28He might be thinking that a lot of things have gone for us in the tournament.
00:22:31And we're playing now reasonably well again.
00:22:34We've arrested that early stem, that early flow they were having.
00:22:39Now possibly, you know, have we got one last gasp in us?
00:22:42That's good to see.
00:22:43Like that from Pearce.
00:22:45That's it.
00:22:46Yes, the Germans knocked the ball out of play so their man could get attention.
00:22:49And Pearce instantly knocked it back into play, straight to the West Germans.
00:22:53Mind you, there's some old-timers, you know, that if they saw that, wouldn't have to give you flack.
00:23:00It's David Platt.
00:23:04Go towards Pearce.
00:23:06Goes away for the throw to the West Germans.
00:23:17Pearce down for Gascoigne.
00:23:20Now Waddle.
00:23:22Little half-jink of his, the little dummy.
00:23:24Find some room here now for Stephen.
00:23:27On this right-hand side is Paul Parker.
00:23:32Being followed by Bremer.
00:23:34And gets a corner out of him.
00:23:36Now, what can England do here?
00:23:39About 11 minutes to go.
00:23:41Beardsley to take the corner.
00:23:44Waddle's in there.
00:23:45Of course, the missing figure of Butcher now to click on from a near post.
00:23:50But Stephen is in there.
00:23:51Taking it wide towards Mark Wright.
00:23:53Wright gets the header in.
00:23:54And Ilgner.
00:23:56Quite a safe, comfortable gather for him.
00:23:59But it's encouraging, Brian, isn't it?
00:24:01It's not beyond us yet, you know.
00:24:03Here's Reuter.
00:24:06Wright marking him well.
00:24:09And it went off Gascoigne for the West German throw.
00:24:14So, Ron Atkinson remains optimistic.
00:24:17And on my watch now, a little over 10 minutes remaining.
00:24:20West Germany 1-1 England 0.
00:24:21In this World Cup semi-final here in Chile.
00:24:28Well, on the substitutes bench.
00:24:30At least off it at the moment.
00:24:31And warming up Steve Ball.
00:24:33That might be the last card, I suppose.
00:24:39I mean, the only possibility he's got there.
00:24:41If he's got to bring Steve Ball in,
00:24:42it would have to be in place of Peter Beardsley.
00:24:44But I'd be sorry to see that.
00:24:46Yeah, I wouldn't do that, Brian.
00:24:47I think we're playing more.
00:24:48In towards Lineker.
00:24:49And Lineker will bounce count for Lineker.
00:24:51It might count for Lineker.
00:24:52It's it!
00:24:54England are level!
00:24:58Look at the joy on the face of England's goalscorer.
00:25:02A favourable bounce.
00:25:04And that ace-goal poacher pounces again.
00:25:09His fourth in the tournament.
00:25:12And a real life-saver for England.
00:25:14And the joy on the faces of the travelling fans.
00:25:20And the concern now on all the German faces.
00:25:23Parker!
00:25:25Hoisting a long, long ball there.
00:25:27And that's what I mean about the bounce suddenly going Lineker's way.
00:25:30And a low left-foot shot makes it 1-1.
00:25:34Out comes Schiltern.
00:25:36He had it ready to gather, but Walker was having none of it.
00:25:40Put it behind for the corner.
00:25:42Now let's England just consolidate themselves and hold firm now.
00:25:47And then set about getting a winner.
00:25:50Nine minutes to go.
00:25:56Corner floated in.
00:26:00And a goal kick for England.
00:26:03Well, now Ron.
00:26:05Well, for the last ten minutes or so, we've been making progress.
00:26:08We've been pushing at them.
00:26:10We've shown a great spirit.
00:26:12And then their worst part of the side is the defence.
00:26:15And we saw, we saw by Lineker's goal.
00:26:17What a tangle their central defenders get into when they're really being pressurised.
00:26:22They look very composed under no pressure.
00:26:24Under pressure they look, they look less than ordinary for me.
00:26:27We talk about stickability.
00:26:30You never give up hope with this England side at the moment.
00:26:33They've got tremendous belief in themselves.
00:26:35And here's Beardsley going past one challenge.
00:26:37But Tone stops him.
00:26:39And there's Reuter.
00:26:46Beard told.
00:26:52Challenged unfairly that time by Trevor Steven.
00:26:55A free kick.
00:26:58Lineker on four goals now
00:27:00along with Mateus
00:27:02all of them chasing
00:27:03Scalacci and Scurabi the Czech
00:27:06who are leading scorers with five
00:27:08remember Gary was leading scorer in Mexico
00:27:10with six four years ago
00:27:13and one other thing
00:27:15he becomes one of the
00:27:17select band of players
00:27:19to score ten World Cup goals
00:27:21but at the moment
00:27:24it's Beardsley
00:27:25we'll talk about that in a moment
00:27:27Bremer
00:27:29to Klinsmann
00:27:30thank you says Gascoigne
00:27:31in very quickly
00:27:32the long ball
00:27:33and he come off again
00:27:35Köhler desperate to get alongside him
00:27:39Platt having a tangle there
00:27:41and a free kick given
00:27:42as Platt bundled into
00:27:45Mateus I think it may have been
00:27:46you know it was Reuter
00:27:49that might just be the worst
00:27:51I was watching Platt particularly on that
00:27:53that might just be the worst decision
00:27:54of the World Cup
00:27:55that
00:27:55Platt was bursting blood vessels
00:27:57to try and get up and join Lineker there
00:27:59saw that it was no point
00:28:00to him going to the near post
00:28:01tried to check and go into the back post
00:28:03and Reuter just stood in his way
00:28:04he had no alternative but to run into him
00:28:07well it's with Bremer
00:28:09this is developing into a tremendous semi-final now
00:28:13as Pearce brings it forward again towards Lineker
00:28:16stopped by Köhler
00:28:19Lineker at the moment frightening the life out of this German defence
00:28:22Bruchwald
00:28:23to Bremer
00:28:26made forward again but an absolute nothing ball there by the West Germans
00:28:33Lineker's ten goals six in Mexico four here
00:28:36Gerd Moller got 14 and Fontaine the great Pele
00:28:40Koscius, Rahn, Kubilas of Peru and Lato of Poland
00:28:44the only players to score ten or more
00:28:46and now Lineker joins that band
00:28:51Klinsmann
00:28:52right
00:28:53Cooley back to Peter Shelton
00:28:5761 minutes
00:28:59Bremer for West Germany
00:29:0080 minutes
00:29:01Lineker for England
00:29:031-1
00:29:066 minutes of this game left
00:29:08extra time begins to beckon
00:29:11it's with Paul Parker
00:29:17flag is up for an offside against Trevor Stephen
00:29:19the West Germans quickly take it
00:29:20not from anything like the right place though
00:29:25right up
00:29:28well I suggested at the start of the evening
00:29:30you might be on the edge of your seats
00:29:31I'm certain that's just where you are now
00:29:34as we are here in the commentary box in Turin
00:29:38it's Berthold
00:29:40to Tome
00:29:43inside for Buchwald
00:29:465 minutes to go
00:29:47to the end of 90 minutes
00:29:52Mack getting across there
00:29:54it's a throw to the West Germans
00:30:19left torn but it came off
00:30:21Stuart Pearce from another throw to the West Germans
00:30:31Matthias now with a long throw
00:30:33we've not seen the Germans exploit that much
00:30:35but Wright was well able to handle that
00:30:38Pearce stopped it from going for a corner
00:30:39it'll be another throw
00:30:41Matthias again with it
00:30:42Buchwald in there
00:30:43Escoe entangling with him
00:30:46Beardsley nicking the ball away again
00:30:48and making the clearance
00:30:50not the time or the place to do anything silly
00:30:53but just put it safely into touch
00:30:54let's regroup and regather
00:30:57regenerate our strength again
00:30:59and look for another attacking move
00:31:02into the West German half of the field
00:31:07it's with Mark Wright
00:31:17right on to the left foot
00:31:20well wide of the England goal
00:31:22there's another dramatic
00:31:24World Cup game comes towards its conclusion
00:31:27live on ITV in association with National Power
00:31:34three minutes to go
00:31:35of normal time
00:31:49not the best of goal kicks from Peter Shelton
00:31:52gives the West Germans possession again
00:31:53it'll be Bremer
00:32:05it'll be Robson saying before this game
00:32:07the winner here tonight
00:32:08really would have an outstanding chance
00:32:10of taking the World Cup
00:32:11against an Argentine side
00:32:13that's shown of four of its players
00:32:15to suspension for the final
00:32:18including the electric Camigia
00:32:20that's an amazing fair head forward of theirs
00:32:25Maradona will be there of course
00:32:27but who will be there from these two sides
00:32:29standing at 1-1
00:32:32Bremer curling a lovely ball there
00:32:34to Berthold on the far side
00:32:39Tom
00:32:43stands for Bremer
00:32:46now for Algenthal
00:32:50Riedler's in there
00:32:52there he is
00:32:54fading and just get it away
00:32:56what a skill
00:32:57taking him clear
00:32:57last West German
00:32:58and back to Peter Shelton
00:33:03all again
00:33:07looks like overtime again
00:33:09very much so
00:33:10and to be fair
00:33:11obviously because we've come back from behind
00:33:13it's great
00:33:14but it's a game well worth watching
00:33:16you could watch another half hour of this quite easy
00:33:18not too many things like that though
00:33:20where Waddle's pass
00:33:21was
00:33:22far too inaccurate for
00:33:25Stuart Pearce
00:33:25and gives the West Germans possession again
00:33:27Klinsmann getting to that byline
00:33:29the cross comes in
00:33:30it'll be too high for Riedler
00:33:31Parker was trying to control it
00:33:33and couldn't manage it
00:33:34Bremer's behind him here
00:33:38Agenthaler
00:33:38to Waddle on the far side
00:33:40just worrying a little bit
00:33:41the way they've started spreading the ball about
00:33:43again
00:33:43Agenthaler stepping into play
00:33:45switching it
00:33:46here's Agenthaler again
00:33:47looking for the right sort of break
00:33:49the West Germans on the edge of the English box
00:33:51the last minute of the 90
00:33:58Berthold
00:33:59Klinsmann
00:34:00right
00:34:01holding him at bay
00:34:03getting in a good header
00:34:04with a bit of length on it
00:34:06Reuter backpedalling for the West Germans
00:34:09remember you'll see the whole of extra time
00:34:11maybe penalties
00:34:12who knows
00:34:13and then that's all followed immediately afterwards
00:34:16by Coronation Street
00:34:17World Cup Plus
00:34:18again on ITV
00:34:23Bremer
00:34:27Augenthaler
00:34:31unless England can do
00:34:32a Belgium with something
00:34:33at the last gasp
00:34:35it looks for sure
00:34:36that we're going to get extra time
00:34:38that was the last gasp of extra time
00:34:40but
00:34:41here's Buchwald
00:34:44to turn
00:34:49Berthold
00:34:55Matthias
00:34:56Köhler
00:35:02Germans seem quite happy just to play it around
00:35:04and say
00:35:04well okay
00:35:05we'll
00:35:06buy that insurance of 30 minutes now
00:35:09of extra time
00:35:10as Köhler gets it back
00:35:16and then it'll be a question of just who lasts the battle on
00:35:19yes I would
00:35:20I'd go along the way
00:35:22I think England will be very very comfortable in extra time
00:35:28psychologically it's one to them
00:35:29it's just blown to the end of time
00:35:30psychologically it's blown to us
00:35:3415 minutes each way to come in extra time
00:35:37West Germany 1 England 1 here in Turin
00:35:39we take a short break and then you'll be back for the action
00:35:53we talked at the start about the old bulldog spirit
00:35:55and we certainly got it Graham didn't we
00:35:57yeah very much so
00:35:57but not only just that
00:35:58Elton
00:35:59some good play
00:36:00we had a rocky 15
00:36:0120 minutes of the
00:36:02of the first
00:36:03of the second half
00:36:05but we've come back on strong
00:36:06there's no reason at all
00:36:08why we can't keep our shape
00:36:09the fellas ought to be believing themselves
00:36:11you know
00:36:12that this is a game
00:36:12that they can go on and win
00:36:14it's not a question of sort of
00:36:16expecting the German side to lay down
00:36:18because they won't do that
00:36:19but it's more a question now
00:36:21of utter belief in yourself
00:36:23that you expect to go and win that game
00:36:25and just looking at
00:36:26there's a picture of Bobby
00:36:27but just looking out there
00:36:28he's held the players together well there in that break
00:36:31and I'm sure that he will be putting that through to them
00:36:34big belief in the game
00:36:35as I say the goal came Graham
00:36:37at a time when he was actually considering
00:36:39making a substitution
00:36:40this is the one that got us out of our seat
00:36:42young Parker was so unlucky you know
00:36:44with the deflected goal
00:36:45puts the cross in
00:36:46we get a few bounces don't we
00:36:48in and out
00:36:48but it's a striker's goal
00:36:50look it's one there
00:36:51on the cross
00:36:52hit it
00:36:52he knows where the goal is
00:36:53he's not going to look
00:36:54never mind whether it goes through
00:36:56defenders legs or not
00:36:56that's a striker's goal
00:36:58Jeff Hurst
00:36:58you'd have been proud of that one
00:36:59wouldn't you
00:37:00what a marvellous goal
00:37:01what I liked about was his
00:37:02he knocked it across
00:37:03with his right thigh
00:37:04onto his left foot
00:37:05super top quality
00:37:07top international class
00:37:08quality finish
00:37:10Jeff I hope you're keeping
00:37:12Greavesy under control
00:37:13he tends to get a bit excited
00:37:14at moments like this
00:37:15how are you doing Jim
00:37:15I'm doing very well
00:37:17Elton
00:37:18and I'm very pleased to see
00:37:20that we've managed to
00:37:21keep the
00:37:22Matthias
00:37:23and the
00:37:25Klinsmans
00:37:25under control
00:37:26and I don't see any reason now
00:37:28why we can't go on in the next 30 minutes
00:37:31and nail this one
00:37:32we must have
00:37:33all the confidence
00:37:35riding for us
00:37:36and honestly
00:37:37I really
00:37:38would feel very disappointed
00:37:40if we don't win now
00:37:43very reassuring to see
00:37:44Peter Shilton in goal there
00:37:45Gordon Banks
00:37:46isn't it
00:37:46yes it is
00:37:48I thought
00:37:48you know
00:37:49when they said
00:37:50he was stuck in no man's land
00:37:51for the goal
00:37:52I must disagree
00:37:53because he had to come off his line
00:37:54he'd made a great save
00:37:55in the first off
00:37:56doing the same thing
00:37:57from the free kick
00:37:58but it was just unfortunate
00:37:59that he took a deflection
00:38:00over his head
00:38:01it was a shame really
00:38:04half an hour to go
00:38:05we're looking at Rome
00:38:06the road from Turin
00:38:08leads all the way
00:38:08to the Eternal City
00:38:09let's rejoin Ron Atkinson
00:38:11and Brian Moore
00:38:14well a full start
00:38:15at the start of the second half
00:38:18it's only 15 minutes each way
00:38:19as you know
00:38:21Germans as yet
00:38:22haven't had to go
00:38:23to extra time
00:38:24in any of their games
00:38:25this is new territory
00:38:26for them
00:38:26in this 1990 World Cup
00:38:29so they've been very fortunate
00:38:30they've played all their matches
00:38:31in Milan
00:38:32until they had to make
00:38:33one and a half drive
00:38:35here to Turin
00:38:36and of course have played
00:38:37in Cagliari
00:38:38and Palermo
00:38:39and Bologna
00:38:40down to Naples
00:38:41and now back here to Turin
00:38:42they've done plenty of travelling
00:38:45they're battle hardened
00:38:46and they're ready for this challenge
00:38:47now in extra time
00:38:49Beardsley
00:38:49twisting
00:38:50turning
00:38:51at that time
00:38:52Brookwell
00:38:53would have stayed well with him
00:38:55but Beardsley's been
00:38:56as good as anybody
00:38:56on the field tonight
00:38:59it's going to be a throw
00:39:01which Stuart Pearce will take
00:39:02for the second night running
00:39:07going to decide
00:39:08a semi-final on penalties
00:39:10who knows
00:39:12certainly a tremendous climax
00:39:14to this game here in Turin
00:39:15as Klinsmann now
00:39:15takes it up for the West Germans
00:39:17half stop by Mark Wright
00:39:19but then Bertel
00:39:20takes it on
00:39:20now Klinsmann
00:39:21this could be dangerous
00:39:22for England
00:39:22Walker's coming across
00:39:23to challenge
00:39:23brilliant piece of defending
00:39:25by Walker
00:39:27supported there
00:39:28by Plax
00:39:29and in turn
00:39:29by Pearce
00:39:30but what a marvellous tackle
00:39:31by Walker
00:39:32Ron Atkinson
00:39:33yes lovely
00:39:34he pushed it with Klinsmann away
00:39:35it would have been easy
00:39:36for him to have dived in a Klinsmann
00:39:37and you know what a tumbler
00:39:39he can be
00:39:39he's pushed him away
00:39:40and looked at the ball
00:39:41and that's the important thing
00:39:42he's looked at the ball
00:39:43all the way through
00:39:44he's tackled
00:39:46Gascoigne for England
00:39:48lifting one into the path
00:39:50of David Platt
00:39:52wobble
00:39:56gascoigne
00:39:59wobble again
00:40:04yes
00:40:05he's willing
00:40:06he's down on that left flank
00:40:08turning it in
00:40:10it came off the defender
00:40:13it came off Stefan Reuter
00:40:14it'll be a corner for England
00:40:16I think that's important
00:40:17for England now
00:40:18you know
00:40:18in this period of extra time
00:40:20that Waddle holds
00:40:20his left hand side
00:40:21of the field
00:40:22gives us a nice
00:40:23four man balance
00:40:24all the way across
00:40:25and doesn't give
00:40:25doesn't give too much space
00:40:27it's over the Germans
00:40:28to play in and switch play
00:40:31Gascoigne's corner
00:40:32Pearce at the near post
00:40:33with Trevor Stephen
00:40:35Liga lurking behind
00:40:36the back post
00:40:37is Mark Wright
00:40:40and Wright almost
00:40:41got in there
00:40:43Ilgner
00:40:44she was a combination
00:40:45of Wright and Lineker
00:40:49we've actually played
00:40:50a couple of those corners
00:40:51we've played one very early
00:40:52didn't we
00:40:52the David Platt nearly got in
00:40:54this looks dangerous
00:40:55though
00:40:55Reuter
00:40:56again Walker
00:40:57going with him
00:40:57but he's given himself
00:40:58far too much to do
00:41:00well that's the lovely thing
00:41:01about having a defender
00:41:02with pace
00:41:02you can afford
00:41:03to push people forward
00:41:04a little bit
00:41:04just saying with the corners
00:41:05there
00:41:06there's a couple of balls
00:41:07dropped down in dangerous areas
00:41:08in the German penalty box
00:41:09and we just haven't managed
00:41:10to get a good contact
00:41:13Schilton
00:41:13the skipper now
00:41:14that Terry Butcher is off
00:41:23in the throw
00:41:31Gascoigne
00:41:34wrestling with good intentions
00:41:36now
00:41:36Gascoigne
00:41:36loving every moment
00:41:38of this
00:41:38being pursued
00:41:39by Matthäus
00:41:40all the way
00:41:40and Gascoigne
00:41:41holds off
00:41:42Matthäus
00:41:42finds Waddle
00:41:43but Waddle
00:41:44in turn
00:41:45just didn't put
00:41:46quite enough
00:41:46on it
00:41:47to get it through
00:41:47to Platt
00:41:48or to Trevor
00:41:48Steven
00:41:48who was lurking
00:41:49just outside the box
00:41:50in goes Pearce
00:41:55and England
00:41:56having fractionally
00:41:57the better
00:41:58of the early stages
00:41:59of the first
00:42:00period of extra time
00:42:04Agenthal
00:42:05to Köln
00:42:07now to Buchwald
00:42:11finding Berthold
00:42:18Thomas Berthold
00:42:19Reuter
00:42:22Reuters
00:42:22made a little darting run
00:42:24probably opened up
00:42:25the way for Reuter
00:42:25if he wanted to
00:42:26have a little pop
00:42:27himself
00:42:29tone
00:42:30to Bremer
00:42:32there's his cross
00:42:33coming in towards
00:42:33Klinsmann
00:42:34great save
00:42:35by Schildern
00:42:36and some last ditch
00:42:38defending by Wright
00:42:39but a terrific
00:42:40piece of reflex
00:42:41goalkeeping there
00:42:42by Peter Schildern
00:42:44absolutely magnificent
00:42:46the German speciality
00:42:47there
00:42:48super ball
00:42:49in first touch
00:42:50from Bren
00:42:51curling ball
00:42:52ugly ball
00:42:52Klinsmann
00:42:53for the first time
00:42:54gets a clean leap
00:42:54above Walker
00:42:55great reactions
00:42:56from the group
00:42:57brilliant save
00:42:58sort of save
00:42:59you know
00:43:00that win matches
00:43:00and Klinsmann
00:43:02did everything right
00:43:02he got above it
00:43:03he headed it down
00:43:04and it was
00:43:05a goalkeeper's nightmare
00:43:06but Schildern
00:43:07lived through it
00:43:08superbly for England
00:43:13right up
00:43:16so the message
00:43:17is clear again
00:43:18we've got to
00:43:18stop Bremer
00:43:19making those runs
00:43:20and crosses
00:43:21down that flank
00:43:21that really is
00:43:22more Trevor Stevens
00:43:25preserve at the moment
00:43:26than anybody else's
00:43:32look out
00:43:33looking to feed
00:43:34Bremer again
00:43:34gets it to Bremer
00:43:36played inside
00:43:37this time
00:43:37to Matthäus
00:43:39look at Beardsley
00:43:41brilliant little play
00:43:42there by Peter Beardsley
00:43:43now Waddle
00:43:44trying to get
00:43:45Lineker away
00:43:47back to Ilgner
00:43:49I know he's a particular
00:43:50favourite of yours
00:43:51Peter Beardsley
00:43:52but that's when
00:43:52he's at his best
00:43:53and when he's
00:43:54ferreting and rabbiting
00:43:55and really making
00:43:56his presence
00:43:57felt with and
00:43:57without the ball
00:43:58getting those
00:43:59little back tackles
00:43:59in they're so
00:44:00important for his
00:44:01own midfield players
00:44:02it's like having
00:44:03an extra midfield
00:44:03player in your side
00:44:04when you're winning
00:44:04those tackles
00:44:06Bremer
00:44:07to Reuter
00:44:10Gascoigne couldn't
00:44:11get to that one
00:44:12don't want him
00:44:13running out of steam
00:44:15Algontala
00:44:17Klinsmann
00:44:19and he'll come to
00:44:20Algontala again
00:44:21Klinsmann there
00:44:22he's onside
00:44:24line or post
00:44:26England breathe
00:44:28yet again
00:44:31Klinsmann
00:44:31deeply disappointed
00:44:34got himself
00:44:36clear of that
00:44:37English defence
00:44:37the last line
00:44:38this is the
00:44:40Bronies
00:44:40Algontala
00:44:41superb
00:44:42ball
00:44:42into Klinsmann
00:44:45almost an
00:44:46identical spot
00:44:47from where
00:44:47Gary
00:44:48Lineker
00:44:48scored for us
00:44:55Gascogne
00:45:02Chases on
00:45:03Beardsley gets
00:45:04there first
00:45:04but gives it
00:45:05to Riedler
00:45:06and now to
00:45:07Bremer
00:45:07a lot of space
00:45:08down the left
00:45:09now for Bremer
00:45:10to exploit
00:45:11the cross
00:45:11comes in
00:45:12and Walker's
00:45:12there
00:45:15corner to the
00:45:16West Germans
00:45:21if you're just
00:45:22joining us on
00:45:23ITV
00:45:24looking for
00:45:24Coronation
00:45:25Street
00:45:25that'll come
00:45:26up after this
00:45:27World Cup
00:45:27semi-final
00:45:28that stands
00:45:29at 1-1
00:45:29in the first
00:45:30period of extra
00:45:31time between
00:45:31West Germany
00:45:32and England
00:45:34Bremer again
00:45:35with the corner
00:45:36floated in there
00:45:37once more
00:45:37Walker
00:45:38up above
00:45:39the wall
00:45:39Lineker now
00:45:40leading the
00:45:41charge for
00:45:41England
00:45:41got support
00:45:42from
00:45:42Gascoigne
00:45:44and with
00:45:45the pace
00:45:45to get past
00:45:46Algenthal
00:45:47who was
00:45:47really
00:45:47struggling
00:45:48there
00:45:50Stephens
00:45:51up
00:45:51alongside
00:45:51him
00:45:52probably
00:45:53offside
00:45:56a quick
00:45:57word back
00:45:57in London
00:45:58with Gordon
00:45:58Banks
00:45:58who must
00:45:59be delighted
00:46:00with that
00:46:00particularly
00:46:01that
00:46:01marvellous
00:46:02save by
00:46:02Peter
00:46:03Shilton
00:46:03from
00:46:03Flinsman's
00:46:04header
00:46:04Gordon
00:46:05that's a
00:46:06great save
00:46:06Brian
00:46:07it's a
00:46:08lovely
00:46:08cross
00:46:08from
00:46:09Brenner
00:46:10and the
00:46:10header
00:46:10is only
00:46:11no more
00:46:12than 5-6
00:46:13yards out
00:46:14Peter
00:46:14couldn't get
00:46:15the cross
00:46:15but it was
00:46:15such a good
00:46:16cross
00:46:16he had it
00:46:17with power
00:46:18and pace
00:46:18and it's
00:46:19down to
00:46:19his right
00:46:20and he got
00:46:20down there
00:46:21so quick
00:46:21it was a
00:46:22super save
00:46:23kept us
00:46:23right in
00:46:23the game
00:46:26thanks a lot
00:46:27Gordon
00:46:29now here
00:46:30come the
00:46:30West Germans
00:46:31again
00:46:31more work
00:46:32for Shilton
00:46:33here but
00:46:34Parker
00:46:34read that
00:46:34so well
00:46:39obviously
00:46:40into
00:46:41Gascoigne's
00:46:41path
00:46:42trying to
00:46:43shoulder
00:46:43defender
00:46:44out of
00:46:44the way
00:46:45no
00:46:45thanks
00:46:47catches
00:46:48another
00:46:48one
00:46:49and that
00:46:50will be
00:46:50a free
00:46:50kick
00:46:52just hope
00:46:53for the
00:46:53next few
00:46:53minutes
00:46:54the two
00:46:54central
00:46:54defenders
00:46:55Walker
00:46:56and Wright
00:46:56can just
00:46:57regroup
00:46:57get the
00:46:57thinking
00:46:58get the
00:46:58concentration
00:46:59right
00:46:59because
00:46:59all of
00:47:00a sudden
00:47:01yellow
00:47:01card
00:47:02for
00:47:02Paul
00:47:02Gascoigne
00:47:04which means
00:47:05that if
00:47:05England go
00:47:06into the
00:47:06World Cup
00:47:07final
00:47:07sadly for
00:47:08Gascoigne
00:47:08he will
00:47:09not be a
00:47:09part of it
00:47:10he's already
00:47:10carrying one
00:47:11yellow card
00:47:12look at that
00:47:12oh my
00:47:13goodness
00:47:13look at that
00:47:14look on his
00:47:14face
00:47:14he knows
00:47:15he's not far
00:47:16from tears
00:47:17there
00:47:17he's not far
00:47:18from tears
00:47:19there
00:47:19because he
00:47:20knows the
00:47:20great great
00:47:21moment of his
00:47:21football career
00:47:22might well
00:47:23be snatched
00:47:23away from
00:47:24him
00:47:24by that
00:47:24second
00:47:25yellow card
00:47:25look at
00:47:26the annoyance
00:47:26and the
00:47:26great
00:47:27great
00:47:27deepness
00:47:29it's a
00:47:29very harsh
00:47:30decision
00:47:30as well
00:47:30I must
00:47:35say
00:47:37Boston again
00:47:37there towards
00:47:38tone
00:47:41Gascoigne
00:47:41I wonder
00:47:42how that's
00:47:42going to
00:47:43affect
00:47:43his play
00:47:44dumped
00:47:44there by
00:47:45Buchwald
00:47:45but the
00:47:46referee felt
00:47:46that Gascoigne
00:47:47was diving
00:47:48there
00:47:52this could
00:47:53be a problem
00:47:53but Walker
00:47:54again
00:47:55really well
00:47:55for England
00:47:56as tone
00:47:57was advancing
00:47:58on that
00:47:58penalty area
00:47:59I think Gascoigne
00:48:00now
00:48:00it's hard
00:48:01for a kid
00:48:01it must be
00:48:01as big a
00:48:02disappointment
00:48:03as he could
00:48:03experience
00:48:04but all of a
00:48:04sudden
00:48:05he's just
00:48:05standing still
00:48:06in the middle
00:48:06of the field
00:48:07nothing's
00:48:07happening
00:48:07it's almost
00:48:09as if he's
00:48:09in another
00:48:10world
00:48:10Brian
00:48:11in fact
00:48:12we spotted
00:48:13Gary Lineker
00:48:13walking across
00:48:14to the bench
00:48:15as he'd
00:48:15taken the
00:48:16yellow card
00:48:16and not much
00:48:17of a lip reader
00:48:18but it looked
00:48:18as though
00:48:18Gary might
00:48:19even have
00:48:19been saying
00:48:19you may
00:48:20have to
00:48:20take him
00:48:20off
00:48:22he is now
00:48:23in a daze
00:48:24Paul Gascoigne
00:48:25is in a daze
00:48:26at the moment
00:48:26at the moment
00:48:26he's in another
00:48:27world
00:48:28it's just
00:48:29as if
00:48:30instead of
00:48:30just
00:48:30I know
00:48:31it's hard
00:48:31but he's
00:48:31just got
00:48:32to concentrate
00:48:32he's playing
00:48:32with his
00:48:33team
00:48:33he's got
00:48:33the ability
00:48:34now
00:48:34and the best
00:48:35thing he can
00:48:35do for the
00:48:35team
00:48:36is to try
00:48:36and make
00:48:36sure
00:48:37we get
00:48:37into the
00:48:38final
00:48:38now Lineker
00:48:42I mean
00:48:43if he doesn't
00:48:43snap out
00:48:44of it soon
00:48:44I think
00:48:44Steve McMahon
00:48:45will have
00:48:45to come
00:48:46on
00:48:47show
00:48:47he'll show
00:48:48a lot of
00:48:48character
00:48:48if he gets
00:48:49through this
00:48:49rebar
00:49:07up goes Walker
00:49:11here
00:49:11so
00:49:12just on
00:49:13side
00:49:21now
00:49:22Matthias
00:49:27Anton's
00:49:28shot goes
00:49:29well
00:49:29wide
00:49:37I think
00:49:38everybody
00:49:38have just
00:49:38watched
00:49:38David
00:49:39Platt
00:49:39Gary
00:49:39Lineker
00:49:40again
00:49:40they're all
00:49:40going
00:49:41they're all
00:49:42talking to
00:49:42the kid
00:49:42now
00:49:43and trying
00:49:43to get
00:49:43him back
00:49:44on his
00:49:44game
00:49:44trying to
00:49:44get his
00:49:45mind
00:49:45right
00:49:45but I think
00:49:46if he doesn't
00:49:47I think
00:49:47Bobby Robson's
00:49:48got to
00:49:48got to bring
00:49:49on McMahon
00:49:49now
00:49:51I was talking
00:49:52to Jim
00:49:52Rosenthal
00:49:52before the game
00:49:53and he was
00:49:53saying that he
00:49:54was with
00:49:55Gascoigne while
00:49:55they were
00:49:56watching the
00:49:56other semi-final
00:49:57and he saw
00:49:57Canigia get
00:49:58his second
00:50:00yellow card
00:50:00and realised
00:50:01that he
00:50:01wouldn't be
00:50:01in the final
00:50:02and just
00:50:03saw the
00:50:04look of
00:50:04horror
00:50:05on the
00:50:05Argentinian's
00:50:06face
00:50:06and Gascoigne
00:50:07apparently said
00:50:07to Jim
00:50:07I mustn't
00:50:08get that
00:50:08happen
00:50:08to me
00:50:09tomorrow
00:50:09but
00:50:09there it has
00:50:10it has
00:50:10happened
00:50:12Argentina of course
00:50:13have four
00:50:14suspended
00:50:16I think
00:50:17he was
00:50:17very
00:50:17unlucky
00:50:18I'd have
00:50:18to say
00:50:18that
00:50:19I think
00:50:19he went
00:50:20to ground
00:50:20he's
00:50:20questioning
00:50:21would he
00:50:21actually
00:50:21caught
00:50:22the
00:50:22German
00:50:22play
00:50:24Ruchwalde's
00:50:25shots
00:50:25are going
00:50:26well wide
00:50:26but they're
00:50:27getting forward
00:50:27now
00:50:28and starting
00:50:28to rain
00:50:28in a few
00:50:29shots
00:50:29on the
00:50:29English
00:50:30defence
00:50:30with about
00:50:303 minutes
00:50:31of the
00:50:32first period
00:50:32of extra
00:50:33time
00:50:33still to go
00:50:36McMahon
00:50:36and Bull
00:50:37both warming
00:50:38up for
00:50:38England
00:50:42well you
00:50:42certainly
00:50:43wouldn't want
00:50:44Gascoigne
00:50:44to take
00:50:44one of the
00:50:45penalties
00:50:45if it came
00:50:46to that
00:50:46at the end
00:50:46but I think
00:50:47that might
00:50:47be asking
00:50:47oh he's
00:50:48coming off
00:50:50no he's
00:50:50not
00:50:50he keeps
00:50:51coming to
00:50:51this left
00:50:52hand position
00:50:52when Shilton
00:50:53Shilton's not
00:50:54the best dead
00:50:54ball kicker
00:50:55in the world
00:50:55I think
00:50:56what he's
00:50:56doing
00:50:56he's trying
00:50:57to pick up
00:50:57a position
00:50:58where he can
00:50:58help the
00:50:59header
00:50:59on
00:51:00Berthold
00:51:01with the
00:51:01throw
00:51:03it's right
00:51:03up
00:51:06the score
00:51:06remains at
00:51:071-1
00:51:09not too
00:51:10sure what
00:51:10an effect
00:51:10that's had
00:51:11on the rest
00:51:11of the
00:51:11side
00:51:12actually
00:51:12there seems
00:51:12to be
00:51:12a few
00:51:13distractions
00:51:13Chris Waddle
00:51:14and a few
00:51:14more
00:51:14they look
00:51:15if anything
00:51:16I know
00:51:16it seems
00:51:16strange
00:51:17after the
00:51:17way
00:51:17they
00:51:18thought
00:51:18they
00:51:18look
00:51:18as if
00:51:18they
00:51:18may
00:51:18have
00:51:19dropped
00:51:19their heads
00:51:19a little
00:51:19bit
00:51:19simply
00:51:20and purely
00:51:21I would guess
00:51:21on that
00:51:21decision
00:51:26well there's
00:51:27a terrific
00:51:27spirit
00:51:27amongst them
00:51:29I would have
00:51:30thought they
00:51:30would hate
00:51:31to see
00:51:31one of their
00:51:32members
00:51:33put into
00:51:34such a position
00:51:35of great
00:51:35disappointment
00:51:45a
00:51:47emergency
00:51:47action
00:51:48will be
00:51:48a throw
00:51:48to England
00:51:49which
00:51:49Stuart Pearce
00:51:50will take
00:52:15first get to this
00:52:17Yes, he can indeed, but he doesn't come through to a white shirt of England, Matthäus looked like a handball
00:52:23there, that's surely a free kick, looked like a handball there by Matthäus, Beardsley, oh he's running into trouble, but
00:52:29Wright will get him out of it.
00:52:36I think Gascoigne is not only mentally shattered now, but he looks physically shattered as well.
00:52:50Waddle, playing it forward to Gascoigne, and Stephen Ball by him now, if Stephen can get to it, Kohler's coming
00:52:57across, gets there freshly before Stephen.
00:53:08He hurls quite a good, respectable long throw, lining it up now, but preferring the short one to Trevor Stephen.
00:53:17Stephen again.
00:53:19Black's made a little break into the box.
00:53:21Boothvolk with the header safely away for the West Germans.
00:53:23How long?
00:53:25Onto the left foot!
00:53:26It's a close line!
00:53:28No!
00:53:29And he came back and Black couldn't get the rebound in, as the whistle goes for the end of the
00:53:35first period of extra time, presumably.
00:53:39And the Brazilian referee deciding that he wants them to change over straight away.
00:53:45Nobody allowed on from the pitch, but I'm not sure whether that last against the post was before or after
00:53:51the whistle.
00:53:51It'll be interesting to see.
00:53:53I'll get the distinct impression it'd blown virtually as it was hitting the post.
00:53:56Can we pick him up from here?
00:53:59You still can't tell.
00:54:01It just wouldn't come back into the path of David Platt.
00:54:04Just thinking a few minutes earlier about Waddle, you know, I can't remember him having a good shot in the
00:54:09tournament and all of a sudden he's nearly won it for us.
00:54:28It's going to signal to the bench that he's okay to go on.
00:54:31He's so popular with the whole team, as I was saying.
00:54:34He's a real joker of the party and they'll all be so sorry for him.
00:54:37And the crowd here in Turin chanting, we love you, Gaza, trying to lift him again.
00:54:45Gas going to Waddle.
00:54:50Now he's seeking to get past Reuter, but Reuter...
00:54:53Hey, Greenheim!
00:55:08Paul Parker with it.
00:55:12Finds Beardsley.
00:55:15That'll be England's throw again.
00:55:21Beardsley.
00:55:23To Waddle.
00:55:25Lifted.
00:55:26Far side towards Steven Lineker in there as well.
00:55:32Trevor Steven, taking it away from Thomas Berthold.
00:55:36Turns beautifully and sadly for England.
00:55:39That must have been a real hairline decision there that Pearce was given offside.
00:55:50That's a brilliant ball, isn't it?
00:55:52Brilliant perception, that.
00:55:54I think he's...
00:55:55What is annoying again is the wide player looking along the line.
00:56:02Bukval for the West Germans.
00:56:05They're inside a quarter of an hour away from those dramatic penalties again as this extra period...
00:56:12As the score still locked at 1-1.
00:56:16Bremer for the West Germans, the equaliser from Gary Lineker with just ten minutes of normal time remaining.
00:56:22That's, of course, another reason, Brian, why you have to consider whether it's worth keeping Gazza...
00:56:26Well, it's worth keeping on for his contribution.
00:56:28Of course, Bobby Robson's got to get down to seriously thinking about his penalty kickers again.
00:56:37Beardsley.
00:56:41Parker.
00:56:45For now, Bukval.
00:57:00For the time being, as well, we switched our flank players.
00:57:03Steven looks as if he's been given the responsibility of playing out on the left wing.
00:57:07And Waddell's come over to this right-hand side.
00:57:10Whether that's something temporary, whether that's something passed on by the bench.
00:57:13I can't see an obvious reason for it.
00:57:16Unless they feel that Waddell can have a go at Bremer.
00:57:22He's got the water to pass under the World Cup bridge.
00:57:25But if Gazza obviously can't play in the final, and if anyone get there...
00:57:29I mean, so what happens?
00:57:30Does Neil Webb get a chance as a playmaker?
00:57:33Well, let's have a look at Gary Lineker at the moment.
00:57:35I hope she can talk about that in the moment, Brian.
00:57:38Lineker.
00:57:39There's a cross and a good one.
00:57:40Trevor Steeman time in.
00:57:42And didn't quite get there before the West German defender was able to head it away, Bukvald.
00:57:48And here's Bukvald again.
00:57:53Mateus.
00:57:55That's a good ball by Mateus to toe.
00:57:59Wiedler.
00:58:01Walker's with him.
00:58:02Oh, he's tricked Walker.
00:58:04But the outside of the books.
00:58:07Yes.
00:58:08Took his time getting it away.
00:58:10And it came off Bremer so it'll be an England throw.
00:58:18That's going.
00:58:19To Parker.
00:58:20That was no ball for Parker.
00:58:22That really gave him no chance at all.
00:58:23Princeman was on him all the time.
00:58:25And the pass back could have been hazardous.
00:58:27But Shilton came out with help.
00:58:29I think we've defended well throughout the tournament.
00:58:31We're not going to start messing up now with one or two.
00:58:35With his sequences, are we?
00:58:38In answer to that, Brian, I would guess that if we do make the final,
00:58:41and the odds are that we, I think the signs are we will make the final.
00:58:45If we do, I would think he's got a one-for-one choice.
00:58:49It would be Matt Marner, I would guess.
00:58:57The other thing, of course, I just wonder whether that might be worth some sort of a little pull,
00:59:01that second-looking of Gascoigne.
00:59:06Waddle, to Gascoigne.
00:59:08Gascoigne again.
00:59:11Half-stopped by Bremer.
00:59:12But Gascon still gets it, and Bremer brings him down.
00:59:15And Bremer will get a yellow card.
00:59:24Well, he's not already had one, so he at least is safe for the final.
00:59:30But what a good time now to keep giving Chrissie Waddle the ball and saying,
00:59:33go on, keep having a go at him, tease him in.
00:59:36Tease him in.
00:59:37He'll be frightened to death now.
00:59:39It'll be on his mind now.
00:59:40It'd be nice for Waddle to get the ball and keep going at Bremer now.
00:59:43Well, Waddle first is going to knock one of these free-kicks in,
00:59:45though Parker's come across there as well.
00:59:47Wright is also jockeying for a position there.
00:59:49And the Russell gone for an offside against David Platt.
00:59:54And the Germans quickly getting it away.
00:59:58So, no time to curse our luck,
01:00:00but better to get back and start organizing a defense,
01:00:02which is exactly what Mark Wright has done.
01:00:06There were five minutes of the second period of extra time.
01:00:09He's already gone.
01:00:13Penalties are inside, ten minutes away.
01:00:20Now Gintana.
01:00:24Off goes right.
01:00:31Vietzli.
01:00:36Jinking his way forward.
01:00:38Finding...
01:00:40almost with a...
01:00:41just click the back of Platt's heel.
01:00:48searching ball.
01:00:49Searching ball.
01:00:50Didn't find Klinsmann.
01:00:52Waddle's header.
01:00:53Tucked down there.
01:00:55And...
01:00:56Mateus' feet were too high.
01:00:57On Gascoigne.
01:00:58A free-kick again to England.
01:01:02Waddle again will take it.
01:01:07Barker.
01:01:09Carrying the battle now to the West Germans.
01:01:11There's his cross coming in.
01:01:13And the header by Platt.
01:01:15Was always going over.
01:01:28Remember the match against Belgium extra time.
01:01:31We'll be talking about who's going to take penalties and who wasn't going to take penalties.
01:01:33Here's the...
01:01:34The Platt header.
01:01:38And in the end of course...
01:01:41Came to nothing because of that marvellous intervention by David Platt.
01:01:45But...
01:01:45There were three regular club tentative takers on the field.
01:01:48Gary Lineker.
01:01:48David Platt.
01:01:49Stuart Pearce.
01:01:51I imagine Peter Beardsley will get one.
01:01:53Yes.
01:01:54I think Gascoigne would certainly get one.
01:01:56Do you?
01:01:56Yeah, I think he'd be certain to take one.
01:01:59Walker.
01:02:01And you've got the possibility...
01:02:03Maybe Waddle.
01:02:07It's Piers.
01:02:07Trevor Steven has in fact taken them at Everton.
01:02:12Lineker.
01:02:17It's Waddle.
01:02:18Taking on Bremer.
01:02:22And Bremer stuck to him well.
01:02:25It's Waddle.
01:02:34Taking on Bremer.
01:02:36And Bremer stuck to him well.
01:02:36Turn away from Gascoigne.
01:02:39In the end Gascoigne was just a little too enthusiastic.
01:02:42And it's a free kick to the West Germans.
01:02:44What it has been Brian.
01:02:45It's been an incredible game in terms of ebb and flow.
01:02:48At one stage you think the Germans are well in control.
01:02:50Then all of a sudden we appear to be in control.
01:02:52Then it swings back to them.
01:02:53I can't remember too many games I've seen like this.
01:02:56Where the game fluctuates so much.
01:02:59At a high quality it must be said.
01:03:01It's turn for the West Germans.
01:03:04Bruchwald.
01:03:06Klinsmann.
01:03:07Berthold.
01:03:09Bruchwald has gone right forward into the box as well.
01:03:11Here he is.
01:03:12Bringing the ball back for Reiter.
01:03:14And now for Tone.
01:03:15Trying to get a shot on target.
01:03:16Goodbye Shelton.
01:03:19Judge that splendidly did Olaf Tone.
01:03:22Curling it round the last defender.
01:03:25Might well have just gone inside the post.
01:03:26We may see from one of the replays.
01:03:28But Shelton was more than equal to it.
01:03:30Here we are.
01:03:30Curling it round.
01:03:31And yes that would have just gone in alright.
01:03:33Lovely competent take.
01:03:35He'll have liked that one of those shots.
01:03:39Tone again for the West Germans.
01:03:41Forward to Matthias.
01:03:44Isn't it quite the driving performance Matthias tonight that we've seen in one of previous West German games.
01:03:50Clinsmann.
01:03:51Reimann.
01:03:53Model down injured just for the moment.
01:03:55Matthias.
01:03:57Got Tone up alongside him.
01:04:00But in goes right.
01:04:01Here's Pearce.
01:04:02And there goes the ball away.
01:04:04To safety for England Intertouch.
01:04:09Five minutes of extra time remains.
01:04:19Reuter.
01:04:20Shrugging off the challenge of Gascoigne.
01:04:23Here's Matthias.
01:04:24And now here's Bremer.
01:04:25And here's problems again for England.
01:04:26If Bremer gets it on too.
01:04:28Well either foot really.
01:04:30Bremer.
01:04:31Just off.
01:04:37They are exceptionally good at that to be fair to England Germans.
01:04:40About linking up around the edge of the penalty box.
01:04:42And when they hit it they do appear to hit the ball with some anger.
01:04:45And that's the second one in about two minutes we've seen.
01:04:48Good play.
01:04:48Good in and out ball from Bremer.
01:04:50And a tremendously fierce shot.
01:05:02Five minutes of extra time left.
01:05:07Can't quite understand that.
01:05:08Peter Shilton as I've said.
01:05:09He's not the best dead ball kicker.
01:05:11I can't understand why he doesn't try and get it back into his hands off one of his back four.
01:05:16I mean basically.
01:05:17Nearly all his free goal kicks are going in the touch.
01:05:21Beardsley.
01:05:25Suddenly England coming forward again.
01:05:27Trevor Stephen now trying to get the ball across there.
01:05:30And Ilgner pushing it behind for the England corner.
01:05:33Ninica was waiting in the centre in that six yard area.
01:05:36A great run there by Trevor Stephen but not quite the pullback that was required.
01:05:41He was under great pressure though.
01:05:43But at least he's got the corner which Beardsley's going across to take.
01:05:47Forward once more come Mark Wright.
01:05:49Chris Waddle.
01:05:50David Platt.
01:05:52Trevor Stephen.
01:05:54Stuart Pearce is in there.
01:05:56Inevitably Gary Lineker as well.
01:05:59Beardsley then with the corner.
01:06:01Wright with the header.
01:06:03Trying to get it played back to Waller but he didn't hit it firmly enough.
01:06:07And the West Germans now with a chance to break as they find Klinsmann.
01:06:10Now from Walker Steyner Klinsmann.
01:06:15Brilliantly.
01:06:19Great piece of defending by a splendid young defender.
01:06:23I think we talk about the flair of midfield and the brilliance of strikers.
01:06:26But that was absolutely world-class defending.
01:06:29Because when Klinsmann flies he does travel.
01:06:33And Walker was patient.
01:06:34Stayed with him all the way through and just saw only the ball.
01:06:38Here come the Germans again.
01:06:41Riedler.
01:06:43Matthäus up ahead of him.
01:06:44Still Riedler.
01:06:46Now Matthäus.
01:06:48Stopped that time.
01:06:49Upload.
01:06:51Oh!
01:06:52That's the first.
01:06:55And Pierce clattering into Matthäus to try and hold things up.
01:06:58And Matthäus again.
01:07:00And Gascoigne came back there at the expense of a corner for England.
01:07:04An amazing stroke of luck.
01:07:06But England are still in there fighting.
01:07:08As the ball cracks against children's post.
01:07:11And the West Germans now get a corner.
01:07:13With a little over three minutes of injuries of extra time left.
01:07:19Matthäus himself with a corner.
01:07:23The big defenders are up from the back.
01:07:27And it goes behind for the goal kick.
01:07:34Well they certainly have some situations the Germans in this last period haven't they?
01:07:38I mean that was a tremendous shot there.
01:07:40Klinsmann himself on the corner will consider he should have done better.
01:07:43But that was a tremendous shot by Buchwald.
01:07:46Two minutes left.
01:07:47One run the score.
01:07:48One run the score.
01:07:48One run the score.
01:08:11Reuter gets it back to Ilgner.
01:08:12The time.
01:08:19Argenthal.
01:08:25over the years the one great quality in all the German sizes they have been fantastic competitors
01:08:33really a bit like England in this World Cup they never assume they're going to be beaten
01:08:41so they're going to battle through to this very last whistle
01:08:53this is Reiter with the cross Klinsmann trying to get on the end of it but that man Des Walker
01:08:58was there
01:08:59against the New Orleans both
01:09:13Walker's been absolutely fantastic
01:09:14and I'm sure Brian Clough won't thank you for mentioning it but the papers here are full of him
01:09:20he's been tipped as a Real Madrid player it's said that Juventus are interested in him
01:09:25and his performance here tonight has been absolutely outstanding and you may depend
01:09:29there'll be plenty of phone calls from Italy I would have thought from Madrid I would have thought
01:09:34towards the city ground in Nottingham Des Walker but I would have thought he's unviable
01:09:39as the whistle goes for the end of extra time
01:09:46it'll be England's first ever penalty shootout
01:09:49and what a time for it to come a place in the World Cup final at stake
01:09:57well it was successful enough with penalties against Cameroon thanks to Gary Lineker
01:10:02and now Bobby Robson well he knows that there's nothing more he can do
01:10:07in a way managers tend to relax a little bit
01:10:10when it comes to the end of extra time and it's down to those penalty kicks
01:10:15but the drama of the night is still to unfold
01:10:24let's go back and rejoin Elton
01:10:27thank you very much indeed Brian so whatever happens in this lottery this game of Russian roulette
01:10:32tonight Graham Taylor has done so much to restore the faith of English football
01:10:36well very much so I mean they've been absolutely excellent
01:10:39you know starting off in the competition with a game against Ireland
01:10:43which produced such vitriolic comment
01:10:45these boys have done tremendously tremendously well
01:10:49and I'm sure everybody back home not only the people in the stadium
01:10:52have been immensely proud of them today
01:10:54we've watched a game that's ebbed and flowed
01:10:56we've watched two sides that wouldn't lay down
01:10:58we've seen some very good football
01:11:00some excellent goalkeeping by Peter Shilton
01:11:03we've had moments of good fortune which have been matched by moments of ill fortune
01:11:07and now we're going to watch a penalty shootout
01:11:09I'm sure the nerves are at everybody's end
01:11:12but what you've really got to do now
01:11:14you're going to say well okay this is the end of it
01:11:17it's either going to go our way or it's going to go the German way
01:11:20everybody at home keep those fingers crossed
01:11:23I'm sure Gordon Banks in the London studio will have his fingers crossed
01:11:26for Gordon Banks the man he taught
01:11:28for Peter Shilton rather the man he taught so much
01:11:31Gordon who's had an absolutely outstanding night hasn't he?
01:11:34he's played terrific Alton he's really played superb
01:11:37we've seen shots coming in there from outside the penalty area
01:11:42really bent with a lot of pace on them
01:11:45and he's been able to get across his goal and make super saves
01:11:48and I just wish him luck now in this penalty shootout
01:11:53I think what I would do if I was in his position
01:11:56I'd be looking to guess which way the ball is going to go
01:12:01and have a go for it all the saves have been made
01:12:03they've been you know obviously saves where they've guessed
01:12:06they've guessed the right way and got across to them
01:12:09I'm afraid I can't agree with Ron
01:12:11I don't think he should stand there and hope that one's going to go straight at him
01:12:14I think he's got to make a go for it and guess
01:12:18and hopefully will come out on top
01:12:22Geoff Hurst from the penalty takers point of view
01:12:26is it a case well there's Paul Gascoigne
01:12:28your heart really goes out to Paul Gascoigne
01:12:31who's played his heart out for England in this tournament
01:12:33has probably been the outstanding player
01:12:36and if we do succeed in this penalty shootout
01:12:39unfortunately Gaza as he's affectionately known
01:12:42will not take part in the final in Rome on Sunday
01:12:45Geoff Hurst I was about to say that well here is the booking
01:12:52I mean he didn't make contact did he
01:12:54Geoff Hurst I will finally get to you
01:12:56the attitude of the penalty kickers now Geoff
01:12:59is it just hit it or is it place it
01:13:01what goes through their mind
01:13:03it's easy of me to sit here out and say what they should do
01:13:05but I feel because they're tired they're under pressure
01:13:08an unbelievable amount of pressure now for penalty takers
01:13:10I think they should all run up and hit the penalty that Linus took
01:13:14the second one in the last game
01:13:15run up and hit it and just hope for the best
01:13:17I think if you start to place it
01:13:18the goalkeepers have been allowed to move very clearly by a yard or two
01:13:22and if they start siphoning it
01:13:24and the keeper goes the right way
01:13:26they'll make saves
01:13:27I think it's head down and crash them in
01:13:29and I'd like to see people take it
01:13:31who don't have too much technical ability
01:13:33rather than to be too clever
01:13:35Jimmy what about you?
01:13:37well the pressure is all on the penalty takers as Geoff said
01:13:43I think goalkeepers actually have got the luxury of doing whatever they want
01:13:48because they're not going to be at fault at any given time really
01:13:52if they make a save they're the heroes
01:13:54if they let the ball in the back of the net
01:13:56that's fair enough because they're not expected to save it
01:13:59so the pressure is on the penalty takers
01:14:02and I think really it is getting your five most confident men
01:14:08and letting them take them the way that they want to
01:14:10and let's all just close our eyes and see what develops
01:14:16thanks very much indeed Jim
01:14:17I don't think that's bad advice either
01:14:19shut your eyes and give it a welly
01:14:20Graham Taylor your observations on what's been happening down on the pitch
01:14:23for the last few minutes
01:14:24shot there of Dr Henry Kissinger
01:14:26former Secretary of State for the United States of America
01:14:30who's here observing for the next World Cup in 1994
01:14:33well obviously they're just sorting out all of the penalty takers
01:14:37I'm going to say this
01:14:38I think you will now see in Peter Shilton
01:14:41I wouldn't have anyone else other than him facing penalty kicks
01:14:44I think you'll see him stand big
01:14:46and stand as long as possible
01:14:48to put as much pressure on the penalty takers as possible
01:14:52you see they're allowing the goalkeepers to move a great deal
01:14:55well that's alright in one respect
01:14:56if the goalkeeper guesses the right way
01:14:58but if he moves so early
01:15:00then in fact the penalty taker does have the time
01:15:03to just change his mind
01:15:05I think you'll find Shilton stay big and still
01:15:08on his goal line for as long as possible
01:15:11in the hope that the penalty taker
01:15:14will in fact feel a lot of pressure on him
01:15:17now if he doesn't get that kick as accurate as he should be
01:15:20then we have a goalkeeper here
01:15:22with some of the best instincts in the world
01:15:24to produce the saves
01:15:25you can't blame anyone one way or the other
01:15:29but as regards penalty kicks being taken against us
01:15:33I'd have Shilton against anybody in the world
01:15:36be as confident as that I say
01:15:39right
01:15:40it's down to the five penalties each
01:15:42if it's five all at the end of that
01:15:44it's down to sudden death
01:15:45fingers crossed Brian
01:15:46fingers crossed
01:15:49thanks a lot Elton
01:15:50fingers crossed
01:15:51I started off the evening
01:15:52we talked about being on the edge of your seats
01:15:54I just wonder if
01:15:55just look at yourselves at home now
01:15:57I wonder how many of you are standing up now
01:16:01this is real football drama
01:16:05Gary Lineker the first to take
01:16:09against Bodo Ilter
01:16:11the 23 year old West German goalkeeper
01:16:14is he going to be a hero
01:16:17or is he going to be a hero
01:16:24well Lineker scored twice
01:16:28against the Cameroon
01:16:31he was thinking of his brother
01:16:33watching in a bar in Tenerife
01:16:34Gary the whole nation is watching you now
01:16:37not just your brother in a bar in Tenerife
01:16:39Gary Lineker with penalty number one
01:16:421-0 to England
01:16:52Andy Bremer coming forward for the West Germans
01:16:57back in 1985
01:16:58Peter Shilton saved a penalty from Bremer
01:17:06whistling of the English fans
01:17:08but he's a good battle-hardened pro
01:17:11Andy Bremer
01:17:14he won't be feeling at his most comfortable
01:17:16but I don't think the whistling will stop him
01:17:19Bremer v Shilton
01:17:21it's there
01:17:22that's 1-1
01:17:25who's next to go for England
01:17:27Peter Beardsley
01:17:31Shilton comes out of his goal
01:17:36perfect penalty
01:17:37tucked just inside the post
01:17:40and Peter Beardsley
01:17:41who's had a fine game
01:17:56carefully on the spot
01:17:57as the goalkeeper
01:18:01psychs himself up
01:18:02the first ever penalty shootout
01:18:04for England
01:18:07the nation urging
01:18:09Peter Beardsley
01:18:11to stick it in the back of the net
01:18:12which he's done
01:18:20so it gives a bit of breathing space for England
01:18:23as the West German captain
01:18:24Lothar Matthias comes up
01:18:27score from the penalty spot
01:18:28against Czechoslovakia
01:18:29in the quarter-final
01:18:30the only goal of the game
01:18:33likes to drive them really hard
01:18:35that's his style
01:18:38but how accurate
01:18:39is he going to be at this moment
01:18:40a crucial moment for the West Germans
01:18:42Shilton
01:18:43big on his line
01:18:45Matthias with the shot
01:18:472-2
01:18:54David Platt
01:18:55penalty taker for Aston Villa
01:18:57two goals already in this World Cup campaign
01:19:00real life savers for England
01:19:03as we see again
01:19:05the Matthias
01:19:07shot into the back of the England net
01:19:102-2
01:19:10the score on penalties
01:19:13it's the best of five
01:19:15and if it's level after that
01:19:16it goes on
01:19:16to a sudden death
01:19:18David Platt
01:19:223-1
01:19:29Karl-Heinz Riedler
01:19:30the next to go
01:19:33here's Platt's penalty
01:19:38goalkeeper guessed the right way
01:19:40might just have got his hand to it
01:19:41but Platt
01:19:42had enough power on it
01:19:44now can Peter Shilton save this one
01:19:46will Riedler miss it
01:19:49will England
01:19:51get a priceless lead
01:19:53here we go
01:19:56it's in there again
01:20:02Stuart Pearce
01:20:06they know all about his penalties in Nottingham
01:20:08there's Riedler's
01:20:09I think it's got to be said
01:20:10the goalkeeper's gone the right way
01:20:11on every occasion
01:20:12the quality of the penalty
01:20:13has been absolutely top class
01:20:22well he's a fairly nervous character
01:20:23Stuart Pearce
01:20:27this is just about the moment
01:20:28last night when Italy faulted
01:20:30and the nation has been stung
01:20:32but it's hardly come
01:20:33to today really
01:20:35Stuart Pearce
01:20:38saved
01:20:38oh no
01:20:46a devastating blow for Bobby Robson
01:20:49joy for the German fans
01:20:51and now a big job
01:20:54for Peter Shilton to do
01:20:57saved it with his body
01:20:58Peter Beersley coming straight across
01:20:59to have words with Pearce
01:21:02to try and console him
01:21:04but
01:21:04I would think he's inconsolable
01:21:06Gary Lineker too
01:21:09well it's Olaf Thorn
01:21:16the Germans
01:21:17with a chance to go
01:21:194-3 ahead
01:21:21and they have
01:21:27Chris Waddle comes forward
01:21:29and the only way England can survive
01:21:32is for Waddle to score
01:21:36Gaines Shilton chose the right way
01:21:38but sadly for England
01:21:39couldn't quite get a fingertip on it
01:21:41if Waddle misses this
01:21:43the West Germans go into the final
01:21:50and if Waddle scores
01:21:51it means that
01:21:52we are still in there
01:21:54with just the faintest of hopes
01:21:55now Chris Waddle
01:22:04West Germany going to the final
01:22:06and England sad, sad, sadly are out
01:22:13off the bench
01:22:14Bobby Robson
01:22:17clenches his lips
01:22:18Stuart Pearce gets
01:22:20oh he's in tears
01:22:21Stuart Pearce
01:22:22and I thought he was a really hard man
01:22:23but there you are
01:22:25that's the way it gets you
01:22:26Terry Butcher coming there
01:22:28saying come on
01:22:28lift your head up
01:22:29don't worry about it
01:22:30but it's
01:22:30meant that England
01:22:32don't go into the final
01:22:33and the West Germans do
01:22:34the penalty failure
01:22:36of Stuart Pearce
01:22:37and Chris Waddle
01:22:38means that Bobby Robson
01:22:40is denied the chance
01:22:42of capturing the greatest prize of all
01:22:51what about it Ron Atkinson
01:22:53well it's cruel
01:22:54I was just saying the standard of the penalty kicking up until when it was 3-3 was as good
01:22:58as you've seen in a tournament
01:23:00considering the pressure
01:23:02Stuart Pearce who probably takes as good a penalty as anyone in the football league
01:23:07didn't happen for him
01:23:08and then to be fair to Chrissie Waddle
01:23:10he's made a mess of the last one
01:23:13but it was adding pressure on him
01:23:14he's got to score
01:23:16not a regular penalty kicker
01:23:19but you've got to give credit
01:23:21I mean on the evidence of the night
01:23:22it's been a superb game
01:23:24England haven't played well through the tournament
01:23:25and have got to the semi-final
01:23:27tonight they played brilliantly Brian
01:23:29and have gone out
01:23:30it's incredible really
01:23:33so the West Germans go through for a final on Sunday
01:23:36in the Olympic Stadium in Rome against Maradona
01:23:38and Argentina
01:23:41live on ITV
01:23:42the match actually kicks off as tonight's did at 7 o'clock in the evening
01:23:49and the Germans are jubilant
01:23:55and we should be on the air at 20 past 6
01:23:58for that World Cup final
01:24:05and England go of course to Bari
01:24:07for the match for 3rd and 4th place
01:24:10on Saturday against Italy
01:24:14so it's bad news for England
01:24:16it's good news for the West Germans
01:24:18the drama of a penalty shootout
01:24:20denying England a chance of a final
01:24:23Paul Gascoigne in tears
01:24:25as indeed was Stuart Pearce
01:24:27one of the penalty missers
01:24:29let's hear from the England manager
01:24:30Bobby Robson
01:24:31a very good team
01:24:32and we matched them
01:24:35but there's not much we can do
01:24:36you know it's over for us
01:24:37and we've played a major part in the tournament
01:24:40we've done very well to get to the semis
01:24:43and we can go home
01:24:45you know feeling very proud of it I think
01:24:46yes two semifinals with the same solution
01:24:50yes well when you get to the four best teams in the world
01:24:53there's not going to be very much difference between those four teams
01:24:57we all have you know tremendous fitness
01:25:00tremendous temperament
01:25:01we can cope with the pressure of big games
01:25:03we all have technical ability
01:25:05we all play good tactics
01:25:06and it's just the ability of the one individual
01:25:10to make the one thing
01:25:15which is going to break the deadlock
01:25:17it was always close
01:25:18and there it is
01:25:20there's a scene of desolation in this studio
01:25:22I can tell you
01:25:22Jim I think your t-shirt says it all really
01:25:24well the old t-shirt says
01:25:25well done lads
01:25:26you did us proud
01:25:27and I think they did
01:25:29I mean we all agree
01:25:30they played magnificently tonight
01:25:33to go out
01:25:34that's the rule of the competition
01:25:37but England played magnificently
01:25:39and I'd just like to say
01:25:41all the flack that that Bobby Robson's had
01:25:43over all the years
01:25:45I'm proud of that man
01:25:47well done
01:25:48and his team
01:25:49Gordon
01:25:50it's left us very very flat hasn't it
01:25:52I mean we're all really down here
01:25:54it is a cruel way
01:25:56it's a shame that there isn't
01:25:57some other way of
01:25:58of producing an end product
01:26:00to a super game like that
01:26:01I mean it was a super game
01:26:03and it was the best that England
01:26:04have played throughout this competition
01:26:06they've played magnificent tonight
01:26:08they were great
01:26:09and it's just a shame
01:26:10that they've had to go out on penalties
01:26:11I mean Peter guessed
01:26:12the right way
01:26:13everyone
01:26:14and I think it was just a matter of time
01:26:15I mean if our lads hadn't have missed theirs
01:26:18I think it was just a matter of time
01:26:19that he would have got one
01:26:20what do you think Jeff?
01:26:22can't add to that really Jimmy
01:26:23it was a magnificent performance
01:26:24really for us
01:26:24in a magnificent game
01:26:26probably the best game of the tournament
01:26:27for me by far
01:26:28and it's tragic to have to
01:26:30I just feel sorry for the people
01:26:31that have been in the top
01:26:31really involved
01:26:32which is the players
01:26:33and the management
01:26:33the flack they've had
01:26:35and I feel totally sorry for them
01:26:37because they're the people out there
01:26:38representing our country
01:26:39and they couldn't have done any more
01:26:41for us all back here
01:26:42how does one feel for Stuart Pearce
01:26:44and Chris Waddle?
01:26:45well I think all of the country
01:26:47should send him a telegram
01:26:48and say unlucky
01:26:49it's one of those things
01:26:49yeah
01:26:50well Jeff's right
01:26:51I don't think anybody
01:26:52is going to hold anybody up
01:26:55for any unkind remarks
01:26:58on this performance
01:26:59someone's got to miss a penalty
01:27:01as it happens
01:27:02Chrissie Waddle did as well
01:27:04it doesn't matter
01:27:05I think it was our performance overall
01:27:07our attitude
01:27:08the way we tackled
01:27:10the whole of this World Cup
01:27:11when we were under severe pressure
01:27:13the management
01:27:14the players
01:27:15they've all rallied
01:27:16round each other
01:27:17and they've been
01:27:19absolutely superb
01:27:20and they've made
01:27:21me feel
01:27:22and I'm sure
01:27:22the rest of the lads
01:27:23and the whole country
01:27:24very proud of their performance
01:27:26yeah okay Jim
01:27:27thanks very much indeed
01:27:28Gordon and Geoff
01:27:28it's been a pleasure
01:27:29to have you here tonight
01:27:30disappointing end for us all
01:27:31but it's good to see you
01:27:33both looking so fit
01:27:34and giving us the benefit
01:27:35of your wisdom
01:27:36thanks a lot
01:27:36let's get back to the studio now
01:27:37and Elton
01:27:40thanks Nick
01:27:41it's the end of an era
01:27:42the Bobby Robson years
01:27:43though
01:27:44have given the next administration
01:27:46the England national team
01:27:48a good platform
01:27:49on which to build
01:27:50Graham Taylor
01:27:50yeah certainly
01:27:51and we've seen some very good things
01:27:52from the England team
01:27:54during this World Cup
01:27:56Gascoigne particularly
01:27:57shows that he can
01:27:58thrills people
01:28:00he has that personality
01:28:02I mean
01:28:03I don't mean this
01:28:04in a funny sort of way
01:28:05but with the penalty
01:28:06being missed
01:28:07then he's not going
01:28:08to have experienced
01:28:08that ultimate
01:28:09of missing that cup final
01:28:10but other than that
01:28:11there's something for him
01:28:12to build on
01:28:13and obviously
01:28:14I mean
01:28:15from Bobby Robson's
01:28:16point of view
01:28:17he's gone out so well
01:28:18and I'm personally
01:28:19so very very pleased
01:28:20for him
