01:08So, no, we're going to see fans like last week. You know what was really interesting last week was, usually,
01:16Joe, you get fans who come in and they just rush down to the wall.
01:19And they just want to be down there. Here, fans come in and they just want to stop and take
01:24pictures of where the concourse is.
01:27And I can see that right now, right in the second level, the concourse above the first level.
01:31Fans aren't rushing down. They're taking selfies. They're taking videos and pictures.
01:35Yeah, I see some of them out there starting to take videos, the concourse and how open it is.
01:42And everyone seems to be excited. I'm excited to see some game action in the stadium because, you know, the
01:47practice is one thing.
01:48The scrimmage is one thing. You're going to see a full, you know, maybe not a full, but a game
01:51presentation for the first time in the stadium.
01:54And the field is also not painted yet, right, Sal? It's all white hash marks and white logos and stuff.

02:32That's not, I guess, reportedly not what they're going to look like for the regular season and all of that.

02:40But we'll see what happens.
02:41Sal, we had some injuries. I talked with Tim Graham in the last segment.
02:44A lot of players not practicing. We saw Cole Bishop, Max Hairston practicing with trainers down on the field there.
02:50It's safe to assume they're not going to play.
02:52Are there any other injury updates that you know of right now?
02:55No, nothing other than what you just mentioned.
02:58You have to remember, and this is very important to remember for the next few weeks for everybody,
03:03the team does not have to be specific on injuries in preseason.
03:06They can tell us who's practicing and who's not.
03:09They can tell us lower body, upper body if they want.
03:12That's really up to them, their discretion.
03:13Once the regular season comes around, they don't give timelines.
03:16You're not going to get that from coaches, but they are required to say hamstring, foot, something like that.
03:22So we don't even know what some of these injuries are.
03:24Some of the timelines on them appear to be maybe better than we thought on a McGovern or a Ty
03:29Johnson,
03:30just based on, you know, kind of some of the watching the reporting out there,
03:33but also watching them show up at practice or do some work off to the side.
03:38Maxwell Hairston, Cole Bishop.
03:39These are guys that we don't know for sure on, but we'll see.
03:43C.J. Gardner, Johnson.
03:44I can't imagine anybody who hasn't been practicing the last couple of days would be playing today.

03:49And Joe Brady says whoever's healthy, I mean, moving on from injuries,
03:52whoever's healthy is going to be playing, so we're expecting to see some starters out there.
03:56I know some fans are concerned, but it is good to get some consistency playing in this building
04:01and kind of a game setting, is it not?

04:04I am not of the mind to want starters out there any time of preseason.
04:10Like, I think just put these guys in bubble wrap, so to speak.
04:13Don't let Josh Allen anywhere near the field.
04:15I also understand the challenge here, if you want to call it that,
04:18or the thought process, at least, from Joe Brady is you want to get these guys into their new environment.
04:25They're going to be playing all of their home games here going forward,
04:28and it's a new field.
04:29It's a new surface.
04:30It's grass.
04:31It's not turf.
04:32The sight lines, where the play clock is, where the game clock is,
04:36where the tunnel is to come in and out for your routine, for pregame, for halftime.
04:41How about even punt returners, punters, kickers?
04:45All of those things are going to be different.
04:47And look, they play at different stadiums around the country,
04:50so you have to get used to it every week.
04:51But you want to do this now so that you understand it better than your opponent,
04:56or at least you're used to it, the next time you play a regular game here,
05:01which will be Thursday, September 17th, against the Detroit Lions.

05:05So, thinking of the Lions game and just how that's going to be for an official game environment,
05:10I have to ask you, just from being around the area, just walking into the stadium,
05:14is it like a game day out there, tailgate-wise, all of that?
05:18Are you expecting to see a lot of fans there, comparatively to preseason games of the past in the old
05:22stadium?
05:24I think that you see generally a full stadium in all preseason games, for the most part.
05:28I mean, obviously a smattering of seats up in the upper deck that aren't taken up or sold.
05:35I think you'll get a really packed house here today.
05:37Not only is it the first opening debut of Highmark Stadium, that's the headline.
05:42It's a beautiful day here in Orchard Park, Joe.
05:44I mean, it's a Chamber of Commerce day, so to speak.

05:53There was a lot of rain that came down during the practice, and people had to kind of scurry a

06:12This is an opportunity for people to come to this stadium who may never be able to again in a
06:16regular season game,
06:17or at least for the time being.
06:18The price point might not be where they're comfortable being able to come to a game to afford it, to
06:23bring their kids.
06:25It's a kind of game where you can come and still enjoy not the pressure of actually winning, I guess,
06:32so to speak.
06:32You just kind of enjoy the atmosphere, see the stadium.
06:35So I think you're going to see a lot of that today.
06:38Sal, I've got to say, I'm excited to eventually get into the building.
06:40I know you're there right now.
06:41A lot of fans are walking into the atrium, the entire field level, all of that now.
06:47So it's exciting to hear things getting underway.
06:49Football, I think, can be labeled back, you know, because it is going to be more of a game presentation,
06:54and a lot of Bills fans are excited.
06:56I have to ask Sal about just practice, preseason, and the training camp.
07:01The quarterback battle, the backup quarterbacks, I'll start here.

07:05But that's been a mild concern for a lot of Bills fans, just on social media, from what I've seen,
07:10between Shane Bichelle and Kyle Allen.
07:14Is this really all that deep for you, or is it no matter who you have, if Josh Allen, God
07:19forbid, anything happens,
07:20are you worrying, you know?
07:21Like, is it that big of a deal, I guess?
07:25I think you have to kind of put it in how long, unless something were to happen to Josh Allen,
07:30right?
07:30First of all, let's just say this.
07:32Knock on some wood somewhere in the studio, because Josh Allen is available, and he always is.
07:38And he doesn't miss time.
07:40He doesn't miss games.
07:42He has the longest starting active streak of any quarterback in the NFL, and that's just the reality.
07:47He's built a little bit different.
07:48People ask all the time or say during the offseason, go out and get a legitimate backup, a guy that,
07:53you know,
07:53you're going to, if something goes wrong, well, look, I mean, you don't have a lot of money to do
07:58that.
07:58So you have to kind of go a little bit more on the cheap.
08:02Guys that might be journeymen who aren't going to cost a lot of money, guys who haven't had much experience,
08:05you know, playing in regular season games like Shane Bichelle, and you just bank on Josh Allen staying healthy as
08:12much as possible.
08:12Now, let's just say something were to happen.
08:14The question is, is it for two games?
08:17Is it for four games?
08:17Is it long term?
08:19I would say if it was two to three games, yeah, I mean, you're going to want one of these
08:23guys to come in here
08:24and just do the job and come up with a game plan.
08:26If it was more than that, if it was longer term, you know, we're talking a month, over a month,
08:31something like that.
08:32I don't know if the quarterback is even on the roster if they wanted to do that, to be quite
08:35honest with you.
08:36Like, that might be something you would invest and investigate bringing someone else in, however possible.
08:41Now, that said, if you've been paying attention to anything I've said for the last couple of years, I know
08:48for a fact this team really likes Shane Bichelle.
08:51Now, does he have the talent to be able to stick on an NFL roster?
08:56That is a question.
08:57But I know they love his moxie.
08:58They love his toughness.
08:59And they've had him here multiple times for a reason.
09:02Remember, he left last year at the end of the year just to get a nice day in and get
09:07paid to be the starting quarterback for the Kansas City Chiefs in the game.
09:09His first ever NFL start.
09:10But they brought him back right after that because they love him in that room.
09:13They love him and what he brings to the table.
09:15He had a great preseason game last year against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
09:19Now, you bring Kyle Allen back.
09:21He's familiar with Joe Brady.
09:23He's familiar with Josh Allen.
09:25He's familiar with the organization.
09:27He also has not had the best training camp so far.
09:30I think today is a good first test for these two quarterbacks for what, yes, to answer your ultimate question,
09:38is a backup quarterback battle for the Buffalo Bills.
09:41Does it matter in the end?
09:42Have you lose Josh Allen?
09:43Probably not.
09:44But it certainly could if it's only for a couple of games, Joe.
09:46Sure.
09:47I mean, like, you know, two games.
09:50If Josh were to, something were to happen, he couldn't play a couple games.
09:52That could be a difference between 9, 10, or 11 wins.
09:55And you're talking about playoffs right there.
09:56Yeah, for sure.
09:57For sure.
09:58Another player who people are excited to see potentially, you know, making a return, as we know,
10:03who was not on the field at all last season and got injured in the preseason, Tyler Bass, right?
10:07We re-aggravated the injury last preseason.
10:09We ended up seeing Ray Davis kick in the preseason, and then Matt Prater took the season reps.
10:13But Tyler Bass, what's your confidence level in him to really bounce back?
10:18The team's confidence, from what you've observed, at least.
10:21Well, they certainly do.
10:22And I'm going to wonder until I see it.
10:24But no doubt that they certainly have confidence in him.
10:26He's the only kicker on this roster right now, and I think that speaks volumes.
10:30It might also just be because they want to show him they have confidence in him.
10:33But Tyler Bass has not kicked, as you said, in just under a year.
10:38Yeah.
10:38It was the last preseason game.
10:40It was at Tampa last year, last time we saw him.
10:43And, you know, we'll see.
10:45He's been kicking in training camp.
10:47We only saw him kick in front of the media, really, for one game, one day, for a little bit.
10:53But he feels good.
10:55He says he feels good.
10:56Jeff Rogers has spoken very highly of the confidence they have in him and the work he's been putting in.
11:00And so today is a test.
11:02I mean, if I were Joe Brady today, I would want to even, you know, what do we always do?
11:07Go for it.

11:08I'd want to kick field goals today a little bit.
11:10I'd want to see.
11:11You want to see that operation, don't you?
11:13Like, if it's a fourth and two from the 27-yard line, I want to see Tyler Bass kick the
11:19ball, to be quite honest with you.
11:21That's what today is for.

11:23I'm with you on that.
11:24I think you need to get people out there, especially, like, defensively, to go into the next thing.
11:30Jim Leonard in the defense, this is all brand new for these defensive players who are returning, and even new
11:34players, right?
11:35So comparatively to the offense, starters are going to play on both sides of the ball.
11:39But you think we'll see more of the defense staying out there for a little bit against these Panther starters,
11:44potentially,
11:44just to maybe get them more reps in this system in a game scenario than the offense that's kind of
11:49similar?
11:50Maybe.
11:50I think that as a head coach, though, I think it's tough to say, offense, your day is done.
11:57Defense, you stay out there.
11:59Now, unless, you know, you're, I don't know, I don't want to say punishing them, but if they just didn't
12:03really, you know, play very well,
12:05and you say, look, you've got to give me another series, we've got to get things right, I understand that.
12:08But I think it's tough as a head coach if he has Josh Allen and James Cook and Deion Dawkins
12:14out there for two series
12:15and then tells the starting defense, well, you've got to go for two more series because we're in a new
12:20scheme.
12:20I know it sounds like, yeah, maybe you want to do that, but that's a tough look, I think, for
12:25a veteran on the other side going,
12:26wait a minute, like, if you're bringing the veterans out, right?
12:28I mean, these are a lot of things you have to kind of subtly deal with when you're the head
12:32coach.
12:32That being said, I'm sure Jim Leonard would like to get these guys as many reps as possible in the
12:37scheme,
12:38but he's not going to be throwing everything out there, in fact, very little.
12:41It's going to be very vanilla.
12:42So how much can he really, it's going to be such a base type of scheme, much like a practice,
12:47and you can get a lot of those reps in practice.
12:49So I guess I don't necessarily think you're going to see the defense out there, you know, too long compared
12:55to the offense,
12:56if at all any longer than the offense, but there's certainly some value in getting them some reps in the
13:01new scheme
13:02even though you're not really getting too exotic today.

13:07Sal, Jim Leonard is such an interesting conversation.
13:10I spoke with Tim Graham in the last hour, and he mentioned that he spoke with Darrell Rivas on his,
13:15the article he wrote, there's more articles coming on the conversation,
13:18but he was in Canton for the Hall of Fame ceremonies and everything,
13:22and he gave up his time because he wanted to talk about Jim Leonard, like, in the moment.
13:27Are you free right now? I want to talk about Jim Leonard.
13:30What have you noticed about him, I guess, at practice through training camp and everything
13:33that really stands out the most?
13:36Jim Leonard, just saying it specifically?
13:38Yeah, yeah, yeah.
13:39I would say his quiet demeanor. That's really what stands out to me.
13:43Let's remember, I know Sean McDermott was very, you know, kind of, like, reserved in a way, right?
13:49But he was very intense. Sean was very intense even when he wasn't showing how intense he was.
13:53You could kind of just know that from being around him.
13:56Everything, and then, and then, everything, everything, the way he went about him.
14:00Like, he's always just watching everything, very buttoned up, very intense.
14:04And then you have Bobby Babich, who, when that guy spoke, like, he was a little bit more demonstrative,
14:11not in a bad way, just great communicator. Loved his press conferences.
14:14Bobby Babich was great in front of the mic.
14:16Jim Leonard is just such a different type of coordinator and coach.
14:20When you watch him, when you see him, he even says he doesn't want to talk.
14:25He wants his players to talk. He's an observer.
14:27He talks when he needs to talk. He wants them to take ownership.
14:30And right now, but he even said, look, it's the first year.
14:33I have to do more of that than what I normally would, because we're doing a lot of different things.
14:37We want everybody to see that and know that.
14:39So that's the thing that I noticed the most about Jim Leonard,
14:42his quiet demeanor and how he goes about his business.
14:45He just seems like a, I don't know how to put it, you know, coordinators are a little different sometimes.
14:51They have so much more on their plate than assistant coaches, position coaches.
14:55And I think Jim reminds me more of a guy who's more of like kind of a position coach,
14:59just dealing with a few guys, but at the coordinator level and just going about his business,
15:06kind of more, not again, I don't want to say he's like less intense.
15:09I'm sure he is internally, but it just seems like he's more laid back and relaxed.
15:13And I think that's the theme of this type of team after moving on from Sean McDermott,
15:17when you go to Joe Brady and you go to Jim Leonard as your DC.

15:24Sal, Keon Coleman has come up on the show quite a bit this morning, the first couple hours.
15:29And what to expect from him?
15:31We saw him returning punts in training camp.
15:33I know other players did as well.
15:34But with the addition of DJ Moore with Josh Palmer potentially standing out as well,
15:40we're getting a lot more of that this offseason than in offseasons past,
15:43where he was dealing with injury.
15:44Keon Coleman, the pressure isn't as mounted on top of him as it seems.
15:48So what do you think he really has to do this season to have a good season for his standards?
15:54It's a really good question because it's going to be super subjective with him.
15:57You're right.
15:58To some people, if Keon Coleman doesn't catch 60, 70 passes and go for, you know, 700 yards,
16:06they're going to think it's still a disappointment.
16:08You can look at it that way.
16:09That's fair and fine if you want to.
16:11To me, he needs to be in the top four of wide receivers and contributing in some capacity.
16:17If he's just your number five and he's not out there as much and, you know,
16:21Skylar Bell's passing him on the depth chart.
16:22Skylar Bell's a rookie.
16:23I like Skylar Bell a lot.
16:24But if Keon Coleman can't hold off Skylar Bell to pass him on the depth chart,
16:27then I think that's disappointing.
16:29I need Keon Coleman.
16:30Even if he's not – he doesn't have to pass – if Josh Palmer has a really good training camp
16:34and starts off well, like, fine, put Joshua Palmer on the field.
16:37I don't need Keon Coleman to outpace Joshua Palmer, so to speak.
16:40What I need him to do, though, is be reliable and play and consistent
16:43and not be the topic of conversation, to be quite honest with you, Joe.
16:47Yeah, right.
16:47You know what might be the litmus test for all of us with Keon Coleman?
16:51How many calls you're not getting about him on a Monday?
16:54I think we've already seen that, right?
16:55Not in the season, of course.
16:56But throughout training camp, it hasn't been all that much on Keon Coleman.
17:01You hear he drops a pass every so often.
17:03But it's been a lot of no news, which I feel like, in a sense, is good news.
17:07Yeah, I agree with that.
17:08Now, he has been inconsistent.
17:09There's been – remember that very first play of training camp he dropped?
17:12Yeah, right.
17:12He also dropped another one that was, like, beautiful, right in his hands,
17:15over the middle, you know, a few days ago, or last week or whatever,
17:20right before they left for Fisher, and that's happened.
17:22He's also made some plays, and, you know, he's had a couple nice catches.
17:25I really liked his sideline work, to be honest with you.
17:27Like, he's very good on the sidelines.
17:29He understands spacing and how to maneuver his body.
17:32Like, that's been something that's just a nuance that I've noticed about him
17:35that I like.
17:35You know, he's not going to run by you necessarily,
17:37but he can still high point the ball.
17:39He's still fast enough to kind of make the play down the field.
17:42I think his route running has been good this training camp.
17:45He has found himself open.
17:46He's got to be a little more consistent with the hands, but you're right.
17:49It's not like it – it depends.
17:51You know, you get people who go out to a training camp practice.
17:53And they'll only look at him.
17:55Yeah, and maybe they go out there, and that's the day he has a drop.
17:58So, all of a sudden, it becomes a story, right,
17:59because you get the viral videos and all that.
18:02You might have other people go out there one day.
18:03They don't really notice him that much, and that's not a bad thing
18:05because, you know, he's doing his job out there.
18:07And I think that's what it comes down to for Keon.
18:09So, you know, for me, like, I want to see Keon Coleman
18:14continue to just be a contributor on this team.
18:17He doesn't have to be the superstar.
18:18They have DJ Moore.
18:19They have Kolo Shakira.
18:20I'm not expecting him to be the number three receiver.
18:22And if Joshua Palmer continues what he's been doing –
18:24which, by the way, he's been very, very good this training camp.
18:26Yeah, that was my next question.
18:28If he has, then I'm fine with where Keon Coleman falls right below that.
18:33You know what I mean?
18:34Yeah, for sure.
18:34I think that's where I'm at.
18:36And Palmer, I feel like last training camp, you know, he was injured.
18:39I remember watching Hard Knocks.
18:41He and Allen were working on their chemistry and all that.
18:44But he seems, this training camp, to have had a good start.
18:48So I'm hoping that translates throughout the regular season.
18:50I know injuries have been a concern with him in general.
18:53But, I mean, moving into, I guess, DJ Moore and his connection with Josh Allen.
18:58I remember you on the morning show with Jeremy and Joe live reacting to some of these plays
19:03that were happening.
19:03These insane catches, the triple coverage catch.
19:06Like, they seem to be on a very good page already, right?
19:10Yeah, I think so.
19:12If we could choose a training camp MVP, it might be DJ Moore.
19:16Yeah.
19:16He was sensational to me.
19:18I think that he was as good as advertised.
19:19Oh, by the way, here's the team that drafted him, and he's playing against.
19:23And his former team where he, you know, the Carolina Panthers, where he really did a nice
19:26job for them for several years, including with Joe Brady, had some of the best years
19:30of his career coming out here today.
19:32Now, I don't know how much he's going to play against them, and we're expecting the starters
19:35to be out on the field, obviously.
19:36But he has been really, really good.
19:38Better than advertised to me.
19:40And what I mean by that is, advertised as, yeah, really good wide receiver who's going
19:44to be the number one on the Bills, and that's what he's going to be.
19:47But I think that he is legitimately like a guy that can force a defense to have to change
19:53a game plan throughout a game.
19:54You know what I mean?
19:55Maybe you go into a Tuesday or Wednesday meeting as a defensive coordinator, and you're
19:59not saying, we got to know where DJ Moore is, like you do a Jamar Chase or a Justin
20:02Jefferson.
20:02But I think that what I've seen, how him and Josh, their chemistry has developed, how
20:08much he wants to throw to him, how much they want to use him.
20:11I think you're going to see games throughout the year where, as the game goes on, teams
20:16are going to say, OK, how do we do something to stop DJ Moore because they keep feeding him?
20:21Yeah, absolutely.
20:23Sal, any, I guess, observations from camp that you might not have tweeted or people aren't
20:28talking about as much as you think they should be, anything like that, or everything pretty
20:33standard, you think?
20:34Well, I mean, there's always storylines that everybody talks about, but I think the left
20:38guard battle is interesting, and we're going to see where that goes today, right?
20:40So it's not something you can focus on a lot in training camp, Joe, because you're not
20:45hitting as much, and you're not tackling as much, and the run schemes are totally different.
20:49Today's going to change that.
20:50Today changes what we think about and what we see about what they do at left guard, what they
20:54do on the offensive line.
20:55We know that the four of the five starters are not only entrenched, but they're locked
20:59up long term now with Osiris Torrance's contract extension, right?
21:02So you got Deion Dawkins at left tackle, Conor McGovern at center, and oh, by the way, he's
21:06injured, not going to play.
21:08So what does that look like?
21:09I'm guessing, and that's a really interesting one, by the way.
21:12Like, you don't want it to ever happen because of injury.
21:15I totally get it.
21:17But let's remember, today, you're going to start to see a center battle.
21:20You got Cedric Van Prair and Granger, you got Lloyd Cushenberry III.
21:23Third, Alec Anderson is fighting for a left guard spot.
21:26If they don't like anything they see from either center, you could always put Alec Anderson
21:29there.
21:30Now, maybe that doesn't happen today, but I think all that starts today.
21:33How does that look today?
21:34How does the left guard rotation look today?
21:36And are you getting both Alec Anderson and Austin Corbett looks today?
21:40Or does one get today and one gets another opportunity next week, maybe against Cleveland?
21:46The joint practice against Cleveland is going to be a big one next week.
21:49And then, you know, we've talked about Caleb Elarmzor and Dory Williams.
21:54So that's a storyline that we've talked about.
21:58I think the safety play is really interesting because if C.J. Garner and Cole Bishop are
22:03both down today, which it appears there probably will be, I mean, I think there's some really
22:08interesting battles behind them.
22:10And to be honest with you, I think Damar Hamlin is, as of right now, on this team.
22:13Yeah.
22:14And I say that, like it that way, because people are listening.
22:16They're driving to the stadium going, oh, Damar again, I don't want to see him on the
22:19field.
22:19I think Damar Hamlin's had a good training camp.

22:22I think he's fit in very well in the scheme.

22:26As you know, he's a baseline level, gives you a floor guy at safety.
22:30He's not going to be making all these great plays.
22:32He's not going to be ball hawking all over the place.
22:34But he is a guy that you can put on the field.
22:36He's going to be he's going to do exactly what you tell him to do to be coachable.
22:40Can he get beat?
22:41Sure.
22:41He can get beat deep.
22:42But his job is keep everything in front of you.
22:44Go make tackles.
22:45He can be physical in the run game.
22:46He can play special teams.
22:48And I think he has been better than Geno Stone.
22:50And I think that is a really interesting spot, especially if these two safeties are out today.
