00:08Hi friends! Today we're going to crochet this adorable little mushroom bookmark. It is a very
00:15quick and easy project, and it only requires sewing from the long bookmark string here to
00:23the leaf. If you like the written pattern, I do have that available as a paid PDF. Check out the

00:31for more information. And now let's go ahead and talk about the materials we need. For this pattern,
00:40we are using some medium weight 4 yarn here. Acrylic or cotton work really well for this.
00:46You'll also need a 2.7mm crochet hook, a yarn needle, scissors, 6mm plastic safety eyes,
00:55and a small amount of stuffing. You can also get some black thread for embroidering the
01:01mouth of the mushroom if you'd like to. We're gonna start with red yarn for the mushroom top.
01:13For round 1, begin with a magic ring, and in the magic ring, insert 6 single crochets. Here's my
01:21slipknot to begin, and I'm going to insert 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6 single crochets. Now pull the
01:39ring tight,
01:41and that concludes round 1. For round 2, we're going to increase all the way around. So that's inserting
01:502 single crochets in each stitch. In this very first stitch, I'm going to insert 2 single crochets,
01:57like so. 1 and 2. And that makes my first increase. Repeating that around. Here's my 2nd increase. Now for
02:14my 3rd increase. 1 and 2 single crochets. 4th increase. 5th increase.
02:31And 6th. And that's that for round number 2. For round 3, we're going to single crochet and increase all
02:43the way around. So in the first stitch, we're going to insert a single crochet,

03:46After you finish round number three, you should have 18 stitches all the way around. For
03:52round four, we're going to single crochet two and increase all the way around six times.
03:58And if you'd like to, you can add a little yarn scrap or a stitch marker to keep track
04:03of where the start of your round is, like so. So when I crochet, I'm just going to kind
04:12of lock it in there. So here's my first single crochet, my second single crochet, and an increase
04:19in this next stitch. Repeat that, single crochet, single crochet, and increase. Make sure you
04:35work this repetition six times around, making a total of 24 stitches.
04:59Now for rounds five to round seven, we're simply going to single crochet around. Insert
05:06one single crochet in each stitch, no increasing, no decreasing. We're going to work these straight
05:13rounds for three rounds. And meet back at the end of round seven. Here's a look at round seven
05:23complete. I had inserted the stitch marker where my little yarn scrap before round four. So here's
05:30round five, six, and now seven. Now after round seven is done, we're going to switch to using beige
05:37yarn for the stem of the mushroom. First, we're going, we're going to switch yarn colors by pulling out
05:45the, um, working loop here. And I'm just going to finish off the last stitch of red by pulling beige
05:53yarn through, like so. And what you can do is hold those two yarn tails together while you crochet so
06:04you
06:04can kind of work it in. Now we're going to single crochet around in back loops only. That means
06:11instead of going through two loops, like you normally would, you're going to only insert your hook
06:17through the back loop, which is farther away from you. Here's the front loop up here. And that's the back
06:28loop back there. Alright. So let's single crochet around in the back loops. And again, I'm kind of
06:37holding those yarn tails, um, while I crochet. So I'm working it into the stitches here. This is optional, but
06:45just an easy way to kind of weave in the ends.
07:16So here's a look at round number eight complete. For round nine, all we're going to do is single
07:23crochet around normally. And so instead of working in the back loops, you're going right back to working
07:28through both loops like normal. And crochet around without, um, increasing or decreasing. You're going
07:40to end up with 24 stitches. After you finish round number nine, it's time to do round 10, which is
07:52single
07:52crochet twice and decrease. Repeating that six times around. So I'll show you what that looks like. For the
07:59first repetition, we're going to single crochet twice. That's the first time. And the second time.
08:07And now we're going to make a decrease by single crocheting two stitches together.
08:12So insert your hook into the first stitch, yarn over, pull up a loop. Insert your hook into the next
08:18stitch. Yarn over, pull up a loop. You have three loops on your hook. Yarn over, pull through all three
08:25loops. And that'll give you a decrease. Let's repeat that around. So single crochet twice, one and two.
08:34And now for the decrease. Insert your hook, pull up that loop. Once you've got those three loops, yarn over,
08:46pull
08:46through all three. And again, repeating that sequence. Single crochet twice, and decrease.
08:57Single crochet twice, and decrease. And you should end up with 18 stitches in this round.
09:30For round number 11, we're going to single crochet four and then decrease. Repeating that three times
09:35around. So for that first sequence, let's go ahead and single crochet four. One, two, three, and four.
09:46And then we're going to put a decrease over the next two stitches. There's my decrease. And repeat that
10:00sequence. So single crochet four, three, and four. And then a decrease. And last time around, single crochet four,
10:16one, two, three, four, and a decrease. You will have 15 stitches at the end of this round.
10:34And now we're just going to single crochet for a while. So that means inserting one single crochet in
10:40each stitch around. And if you'd like to add a yarn marker here, you may do that. Makes it a
10:47little bit easier.
10:57So let's single crochet around. Here's a look at round 15 complete. I went from rounds 12 here to 13,
11:0814, and 15. And now your mushroom probably looks kind of funny the way it is. But don't worry,
11:14we're going to actually push the inner part of the mushroom into the cap. So just push that off white
11:23section like so. And you'll notice that your mushroom went from looking like blown up like this to
11:34caved in like this. And let's continue working on the next round. For round 13, we're going to single
11:43crochet four and then increase, repeat that three times around. So here we're going to single crochet four.
11:53One, two, three, and four stitches.
12:03One, two, three, and four stitches. And now I'm going to make an increase.
12:11And let's continue around for three, uh, for a total of three repetitions.
12:19Three and four stitches. And then my increase.
12:29And now last repetition. Oops. One, two, three, and four. And I'm going to add an increase at
12:46the next stitch. Now I have, um, 18 single crochets around. Now for round 17, we are going to single
12:55crochet five and then increase all the way around. Total of three times. So let's single crochet five.
13:02One, two, sorry for the squeakiness. I think my tension's a little too tight.
13:15Three, four, and five.
13:20Three, four, and five. And then an increase. And let's repeat that around.
13:33One, two, three, four, and five. And then an increase.
13:52One, two, three, four, five. And then an increase.
14:05One, two, three, four, and five. Now for round 18, we're just going to single crochet around.
14:15One, two, three, four, and five.
14:32Here's round number 18 complete.
14:35For round 19, we're going to begin decreasing.
14:39Let's single crochet five and then decrease three times around.
14:43So for the repetition, that's one single crochet, two single crochets,
14:48three, four, and five. And now let's make a decrease.
15:01After round 19 is a good time to insert those plastic safety eyes.
15:06I put six millimeter eyes between rounds 17 and 18. So counting up from 19, our last finish row,
15:15it's round 19, 18, and 17. Right between those two rounds.
15:22And I like to put them about four stitches apart.
15:26And all you have to do is count from one side to the other.
15:31So I inserted one eye here, and then I'm going to count over four stitches.
15:36So in here, and then one, two, three, and four.
15:41And then insert the second eye into that fourth stitch.
15:49Then go ahead and secure those eyes with some backings.
15:54Before we make further decreases after round 19, let's go ahead and stuff the mushroom.
16:02You're going to insert a little bit of stuffing up through the stem and into the center of the crown
16:08there, or the cap.
16:11Do not overstuff the mushroom cap because it will not be able to kind of cave in like this.
16:22And when you're ready for round 20, we're going to do a single crochet and then a decrease, repeating around
16:29six times.
16:30So here, we're going to single crochet and then decrease.
16:39That's my first repetition.
16:42Single crochet, oops.
16:46Well, that didn't turn out.
16:49Okay, decrease.
16:51Now, second repetition, single crochet and decrease.
17:00Third repetition, single crochet and decrease.
17:12Then third rep, fourth repetition, single crochet and decrease.
17:22Fifth repetition, single crochet and decrease.
17:34And next repetition, single crochet and decrease.
17:40And we are done with round number 20.
17:50And the very last round for round number 21 here, you're simply going to decrease all the way around.
17:59So that's six decreases.
18:21And if you find that your stem is a little bit, um, understuffed, you can go ahead and add a
18:27bit more
18:27before you close up the hole.
18:29Now, with round number 21 finished, we're going to fastmouth with a very long tail.
18:34Um, I recommend about 12 inches or so, and that's going to be the length of your bookmark, plus an
18:42additional
18:42several inches for sewing and fastening off.
18:46So here, I'm going to measure to about 12 inches and snip that off.
18:56And you're going to use this long yarn tail to simply, um, sew the opening closed.
19:04So I like to do that by going through the front loops only, going in and out from the, uh,
19:11first
19:11front loop here. In and then out the next front loop. In and out the next front loop.
19:22And last one, in and out that last front loop.
19:28When you do that, um, and pull the yarn tail tight, you're cinching up the bottom quite neatly.
19:37And that also, um, is going to be the long tail for your bookmark.
19:42So I would add in just a couple more stitches around to strengthen it.
19:56And when you are all done, you'll want to make sure you are able to insert your,
20:03um, yarn tail through the very center of the bottom.
20:19And we're going to leave this yarn tail, um, attached to the yarn needle for now.
20:24We're going to use it to sew onto the leaf later.
20:27Let's go ahead and crochet the leaf.
20:33For the leaf, we're going to use some green yarn and start with a, um, bit of a tail.
20:39Then you're going to make a chain of eight.
20:41So we're going to do a slip knot to prepare for our chain.
20:46And now let's chain eight.
20:48One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, and eight.
20:55And we're going to work starting from the second chain from the hook.
21:00In that second chain, you're going to insert a slip stitch.
21:09In the next chain, you're going to insert a single crochet.
21:15In the next chain, a half double crochet.
21:21Then in the next chain, a double crochet.
21:34Then we're going to insert two triple crochets in the next chain.
21:39And here's what a triple crochet looks like.
21:42Similar to a double crochet, except you're going to loop around three times, uh, two times, excuse me.
21:47So a double crochet, you, um, loop over once.
21:52We're going to do it two times for a triple.
21:56Like this.
21:57Insert your hook into the next chain.
22:00Pull, yarn over, pull up a loop.
22:03You have four loops on your hook.
22:05Yarn over, pull through the first two.
22:07Yarn over, pull through the next two.
22:10And yarn over, pull through the last two.
22:13Let's repeat that triple crochet on the same chain.
22:17So yarn over twice.
22:19Insert your hook into that same stitch.
22:22Yarn over, pull up a loop.
22:24Yarn over, go through the first two loops.
22:26Yarn over, go through the next two loops.
22:29And yarn over, go through the last two loops.
22:33Now in the very last chain in your line of chains here, we're going to insert a double crochet,
22:40half double, and a single crochet all in the same stitch.
22:43So here, a double crochet, then a half double crochet, and a single crochet all together.
22:58Now we're going to work in the opposite side of the chain now.
23:02And we're going to kind of reverse the instructions.
23:06So going into that same chain, let's do a single crochet, a half double crochet, and a double crochet.
23:23Again, we're working on the other side of the chain.
23:26In the next stitch, we're going to yarn over twice to insert two triple crochets.
23:33Here's my first triple,
23:36my second triple.
23:42Now I'm going to do a double crochet in my next stitch,
23:48a half double crochet in the next stitch,
23:54a single crochet in the next,
23:58and a slip stitch in the very last stitch.
24:06And after you finish, um, you can go ahead and now slip stitch back towards the bottom of the leaf.
24:16So I'm just going through the center of the leaf here,
24:26going to insert a slip stitch into each of these chains.
24:39basically kind of backpedaling here, so that my yarn tails are both on the same side.
24:52Okay.
24:56So when you are done, go ahead and fasten off with a bit of a tail so that you can
25:01tie the two ends together.
25:20And there you have it. That's my little leaf.
25:25Now I'm going to go ahead and attach the mushroom to the leaf by inserting my yarn needle through the
25:36bottom of the center.
25:41And here's where you want to see how long you want the bookmark to be.
25:45If you want a longer bookmark, you will, um, kind of stretch out your, um, yarn strand here some more.
25:54If you want a shorter one, just pull your leaf up to make it a shorter string.
26:01I'm going to make mine about eight inches long.
26:06So just kind of measuring down, that seems about right.
26:11And I think eight inches is a good length for me.
26:14Um, also because the little teabag bookmark I made is eight inches long.
26:25Okay.
26:26And now we're going to go ahead and secure this with a few stitches.
26:43When you're all done, you can go ahead and fasten off.
26:46One method of fastening off is, um, I like to split that ending yarn tail.
26:53And then I can pull one end through one of these stitches on the back here.
27:04That's very close by.
27:05And then I'll tie the two ends together.
27:16And of course, um, double knot it.
27:20And fasten off.
27:25And there you have it.
27:26Your little mushroom bookmark is all done.
