00:08Hi friends! Today we're going to crochet this adorable little bookworm. It's the
00:13perfect bookmark for a book lover and it's a very fast and no sew crochet project that
00:21uses just a little bit of yarn. So let's go ahead and review the materials and we'll get started.
00:31For this project, I'm using medium weight for yarn. I've got two colors here, one for
00:38the body and head and one for the bow. You'll also need two different sized crochet hooks,
00:46a smaller one and a larger one. I'm using the 2.75 millimeter hook for the head and for the
00:53bow. And for the body, a larger five millimeter hook. You'll also need six millimeter plastic
01:01safety eyes, a little bit of stuffing, and scissors.
01:12Let's begin with round one. For round one, we're going to start with a magic ring. In the magic ring,
01:20we're going to insert six single crochets. So here's my slip knot to begin. And now I'm going to put
01:28in
01:28one, two, three, four, five, and six single crochets. Now we're going to pull the ring tight.
01:55And for round number two, we're going to insert increases in each stitch around. So in that first
02:02stitch here, I'm going to insert my hook in here, I'm going to put in two single crochets in the
02:09same
02:09stitch. That's one and two. And let's continue around. So here is going to be my second increase.
02:21One and two single crochets. One and two single crochets. Now let's do the third increase. One and two single
02:30crochets. And so forth. So we're going to do the fourth, fifth, and sixth increases.
02:54After you do that, you are done with round number two. For round number three, we're going to do
02:59a repetition of single crochet and increases, repeating that all the way around a total of six
03:06times, making 18 total stitches. So what that's going to look like is you're going to, in that first
03:16stitch, single crochet. In the second stitch, we're going to increase. And now you have done your first
03:26repetition. We're going to repeat again, single crochet and increase. Again, single crochet and increase.
03:42That's the third repetition. And again, let's go all the way around until we have six repetitions total.
04:12When you are done with round three, we're going to start round four and
04:18for round four to round seven, it's the same. We're just going to single crochet around,
04:23putting one stitch in each stitch around. And since there's no increasing or decreasing,
04:30we're going to start seeing more of a ball shape forming, a 3D shape forming, excuse me.
04:37So let's go ahead and mark our spot for round four, the beginning of round four.
04:45I like to do that with a scrap of yarn, or you can use the starting yarn tail as well.
04:51I'm just going to put it right there. And now when I single crochet in the next stitch,
04:57it tells me where the start of my round is. So once I go all the way around, I'll know
05:04that I finished
05:05round four and we'll keep going until we reach round seven.
05:13So again, you're just going to insert one single crochet in each stitch around.
05:28And we are going to meet back when we are done with round number seven.
05:35Here's a look at round seven complete. Counting up from where I placed the marker at round four,
05:42that's one, or excuse me, round four, round five, round six, and round seven.
05:48Now for round number eight, we're going to do a decrease round. We're going to single crochet and
05:55then decrease, repeating that around six times. Let's begin.
06:02And I'm going to move my marker up again to help me see where the start of the round is.
06:09So for the first stitch, we're going to make a single crochet.
06:13Then for the next stitch, a decrease. To do that, I'm going to do a regular decrease here.
06:20Yearn over, pull through a loop, insert my hook into the next stitch.
06:24Yearn over, pull up a loop. I have three loops on my hook.
06:28Yearn over, pull through all three loops. That's a regular decrease. You can use an invisible decrease
06:37if you prefer. So now I'm going to do a single crochet and then another decrease.
06:47A single crochet and another decrease.
06:57Single crochet, decrease.
07:12And the very last repetition here. Single crochet and decrease.
07:23And now, with round number eight complete, we are going to insert the plastic safety eyes.
07:31So I'm going to go grab some six millimeter eyes.
07:35I'm using six millimeter plastic safety eyes here.
07:39And I'm going to put them between rounds six and seven, four stitches apart.
07:44Counting from the top, that's round one, two, three, four, five, six, and seven.
07:51So right between there. And I place my first eye in, and I'm just going to move four stitches over.
07:57One, two, three, four. And this is where I'll place the next eye.
08:11Then make sure you add those plastic safety eye backings on so that your eyes stay nice and secure.
08:21Once you have that in, you can add some stuffing to the doll's head.
08:26I'm just going to put in a small amount here.
08:33And for round number nine, we're simply going to decrease all the way around.
08:38That's going to be six decreases total.
09:13So here's round number nine complete.
09:16What we're going to do is now add single crochets until we reach the very left side of the worm's
09:23body.
09:24Now, this is going to vary for everyone, depending on where you added the plastic safety eyes.
09:30But you're going to want to see where the left side is, right around here.
09:34And I think I just missed it because I'm near the center of the back.
09:39So I'm going to add single crochets until I reach the very left side.
09:45So I'm going to add single crochets until I reach the very left side.
09:55Once you're at the very left side, what you're going to do is then we're going to single crochet
10:02across the last round, kind of like pinching it flat here.
10:08And we're going into the front and back stitches.
10:12So there are six stitches total in this last round.
10:17And we're going to simply go into one stitch in the front, going out one stitch in the back here.
10:25We want it to be nice and flat, one.
10:30And then now the next pair of stitches here, two.
10:36And last pair of stitches, three.
10:39And as you can see, what that does is it creates a flat, um, sort of like neck for your
10:49worm.
10:50And we're going to use this flat piece to begin working the body of the worm.
11:01For the head, we've been using this smaller hook.
11:05And for the body, we're now going to switch to a larger hook.
11:09We want to use a larger hook because it will keep the body's tension from being too tight
11:14and curling up.
11:15You want the body to lay flat on the page of your book.
11:20So I'm using a five millimeter crochet hook here.
11:24And now we're continuing where we left off with the body.
11:30What we're going to do right now is make a long chain of 35 chains.
11:361, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20,
11:5121, 22, 23, 24, 25, 26, 27, 28, 29, 30, 31, 32, 33, 34, 35.
12:02All right, so here's my long chain for the body.
12:07So starting in the third chain of the hook, we're going to work down towards the body.
12:14Starting with double crochet twice and then double crochet decrease twice.
12:21Then double crochet twice again and then double crochet increase twice.
12:26Let me show you how that looks.
12:27So first, in that third chain from the hook, I'm going to double crochet.
12:35That's my first double crochet and double crochet again in the next chain.
12:41That makes my second double crochet.
12:44Then we're going to make the decrease and it's a double crochet decrease, meaning you're going to
12:50double crochet two stitches together.
12:53Yarn over, insert your hook into the first stitch.
12:57I'm just going into the back loop here.
12:59Yarn over, pull through a loop, go into the next stitch, yarn over, pull up a loop.
13:07Now we're going to yarn over, go through all three or the first three loops
13:15and then yarn over and go through the next two loops.
13:19So that's a double crochet decrease.
13:21Now let's do it again.
13:24Yarn over, insert your hook into the next chain, yarn over, pull up a loop.
13:29Insert your hook into the next chain, yarn over, pull up a loop.
13:34Yarn over, pull through all, pull through first three loops.
13:40Then yarn over and pull through the next two loops.
13:43The last two loops, I mean.
13:45And then we're going to double crochet twice.
13:48So one in each of the next two stitches.
13:52One double crochet.
13:55And another double crochet.
13:59And now we're going to double crochet increase, meaning inserting two double crochets in the same stitch.
14:05Here's my first double crochet increase.
14:13And here is the second double crochet increase.
14:25And it's got this nice little, um, wiggle going on here.
14:31And, um, we are going to repeat this sequence a few more times for a total of three times.
14:39Now, let's go ahead and I'm going to go through a little faster for the second sequence.
14:45We're going to first double crochet twice.
14:47One double crochet.
14:50Two double crochets.
14:53And then double crochet decrease twice.
14:57Decrease.
15:00And decrease.
15:12Then double crochet twice.
15:19Then double crochet increase twice.
15:36And I've just completed that second sequence.
15:40Now, let's do the last, uh, sequence of the three.
15:45Double crochet twice.
15:48Oops.
15:50There we go.
15:53Double crochet decrease twice.
16:07Double crochet twice.
16:17Now, we're going to double crochet increase in the next two stitches.
16:35And that completes the third sequence.
16:38Now, we're getting really close to the end here.
16:42In the last, uh, three chains, we're just going to simply do a double crochet in each stitch.
16:48So, that's one,
16:54two,
16:59and three.
17:05And that's that for, um, pretty much that long tail section.
17:11Now, we're going to work a slip stitch into the left side of the chain, or into the worm's left
17:20side,
17:20excuse me, not the chain, into a regular stitch here.
17:24And you can switch back to using the tiny, or the smaller hook.
17:29Because the stitches in the worm's side are really tight.
17:32So, you're going to need a smaller hook to get in there.
17:36So, going into that left side, I'm going to insert my hook and pull through for a slip stitch, like
17:44so.
17:46And now, what, um, you'll do is you're going to fasten off with a long tail, and weave it in.
18:06Instead of using a yarn needle, um, I like to weave in simple, um, yarn tails just by pulling it
18:16in with a crochet hook.
18:18So, I'm going to go through this section a couple times.
18:25As you can see, I'm just using my yarn needle to go in and out of the stitches here.
18:37And I'm going to weave in the end by pulling it into the doll's, or the worm's head.
18:54Here's a look at the little bookworm.
18:57And he's got a weakly body.
18:59If you find that it's curling up a little bit, you may want to relax the tension by pulling on
19:06your stitches to ease them.
19:09And you want it to be as flat as possible, if using it as a bookmark.
19:16Alright.
19:20Right now, we're going to complete our worm with a little bow to make him look super spiffy.
19:27So, let's get out some red yarn for that.
19:31I'm going to use the small hook again, 2.75 millimeters.
19:35And I'm going to, um, start off with the magic ring.
19:39In the magic ring, you're going to first chain three.
19:46Here's my slip knot again.
19:48One, two, and three chains.
19:51Then you're going to insert a double crochet.
19:55Then we're going to chain three, and slip stitch into the ring.
20:04That makes one side of the bow.
20:06We're going to repeat that again.
20:08Chain three, double crochet, chain three, slip stitch.
20:18And after you do that, we're going to pull the ring tight.
20:26As you can see, once you pull it tight, you have two little, um, circles joined in the middle.
20:33And you're going to want to fasten off with a very long tail, which you're going to use to wind
20:38around the center of the bow.
20:40And you're also going to use it to wrap around the, um, worm's neck.
20:45So, fasten off with, um, about, I'd say, eight inches or so.
20:52After you fasten off with a long tail, you're going to use it to wrap around the center.
20:57I'm going to pull this, um, starting yarn tail really tight once more.
21:03You want to make sure it's tight so it doesn't come undone.
21:06And, um, a little tip for you is you can go ahead and tie the, um, starting and ending yarn
21:12tails together first.
21:14This way it'll keep it from unraveling, uh, later on.
21:20All right.
21:23So, now I'm going to wrap that long yarn tail that we used for fastening off and wrap it around
21:33the center of the bow a few times.
21:40Like so.
21:41And then you're going to attach it to your worm's neck.
21:49You can do it, um, a couple of different ways.
21:52You can sew it on or you can literally just tie it on.
21:55I'm going to tie the, um, starting and ending yarn tails one last time to make sure they're really secure.
22:06And I'm going to actually use them to tie around the worm's neck.
22:22And you can wrap it a few times and tie it in the back.
22:26Alternatively, you can also use a yarn needle and sew the bow onto the neck.
22:30But I like tying it on so that you can see, um, it on his, around his neck like a
22:36little collar.
22:42And here's the little worm with his bow attached.
