00:00UMNO Secretary-General Ashraf Wajdi Dusuki is seeking RM5 million in compensation from
00:06several social media users he accuses of defaming him over the Tabung Haji controversy.
00:12In a Facebook post, Ashraf said he had instructed his lawyer to issue letters of demand against
00:17those allegedly linking him to the Pilgrim Fund's troubled investments.
00:22It's not the money that I'm after, but truth and justice, he wrote.
00:26Adding that any compensation received would be channeled to underprivileged students through
00:31a Mara Education Fund.
00:33The move comes after a Royal Commission of Inquiry found that seven of Tabung Haji's 14
00:39investments between 2014 and 2020 resulted in losses.
00:44The largest involved Saudi-based Al-Rawda real estate development and project management,
00:49which was linked to a 2017 signing ceremony attended by Ashraf when he was Deputy Religious
00:55Affairs Minister.
00:56A photograph from that ceremony recently resurfaced on Facebook, prompting Ashraf to deny
01:02having any say in Tabung Haji's decisions during his tenure from 2015 to 2018.
01:08He has claimed there is a concerted effort to tarnish his reputation by linking him to the
01:14controversy.
01:16Amadeep Gill, FMT.
