Jayden Daniels and his team have told LSU they no longer want the school to profit off his name, image, and likeness. What do you make of this whole situation?

00:00Jaden Daniels has filed a cease and desist lawsuit against LSU.
00:07I'm reading here.
00:08An attorney representing Commander's quarterback Jaden Daniels
00:10informed LSU can no longer use his name, image, and likeness
00:13and said he felt profoundly disrespected after LSU allowed cornerback DJ Pickett
00:19to wear his former No. 5 jersey.
00:21There are a million angles to this thing.
00:26For me, I start with the statement released from a Daniels spokesperson.
00:31That Daniels family is deeply disappointed and feels profoundly disrespected
00:36by LSU's decision to give Jaden's number to another player.
00:40I start with what I think Jaden's response here is.
00:44My guess is this has been talked about privately for weeks.
00:49And now it's becoming public.
00:50That could be coming from a lot of different places.
00:53Because certainly Jaden Daniels, the season, the Heisman Trophy winning season
00:57he had at LSU, which was only three years ago now.
01:02Like, you would think No. 5 doesn't get put into circulation this quick.
01:06And I understand if Jaden is upset about that.
01:10I understand more so if his family's upset about that, right?
01:13And the fact that the spokesperson statement starts with the Daniels family
01:17leads me to believe, hey, Jaden's not thrilled about this,
01:21but the family's more upset, and that's why we're pressing the gas on this.
01:25Like, to me, Jaden is such a football cyborg, and his focus is so intent on what
01:30happens on the field that this is like, oh, yeah, that sucks.
01:33Yeah, do whatever you need to do.
01:34I'm going to watch his iPad.
01:35I'm going to keep grinding this tape.
01:37But I think he's able to do that because he has people around him that he knows
01:40is going to watch his back on everything.
01:41I think the other side of this, Lane Kiffin is like the most polarizing,
01:48controversial coach in college football.
01:50I don't think that's much of a dispute here.
01:53I think Lane Kiffin is a mercenary brought to LSU to win games.
01:58And you know who he thinks is going to help him win games this year?
02:01DJ Pickett, the sophomore corner that was the best player on their defense last year.
02:05Apparently, Pickett was promised he could wear number five.
02:08And you know what Lane sees?
02:11Yo, Jaden's not going to help me win this year.
02:13DJ Pickett is.
02:14If I got to give him number five, I don't care.
02:16But see, that is when LSU has to step in because the coach who's, quote, unquote,
02:22supposedly promised him the number didn't let him wear it.
02:25Because that coach that we thought was fake as hell by trying to go with the family,
02:30the LSU or the fake Southern accent, he realized,
02:34we can't let somebody wear Jaden's number and not let them wear Joe's number.
02:38You know what I'm saying?
02:39So that coach looked beyond the BS.
02:42And I think LSU failed the whole deal by allowing Lane to run.
02:47Lane Kiffin just got there.
02:49Lane Kiffin was at Ole Miss for a certain amount of years.
02:53But then when he get ready to get—
02:54He was at Ole Miss seven months ago.
02:55When he leaves Ole Miss, he wants to throw a damn grenade
02:59and try to say how racist they were.
03:02Or did he check the history of LSU?
03:04Okay?
03:05So we can go.
03:06I'm not much going to go down that avenue.
03:08But the whole thing is I always have a problem with teams and colleges
03:15that allow coaches to change everything every time they come in.
03:18I think Lane shows up and gets the keys to the kingdom.
03:20He gets to do whatever he wants.
03:21He should show up and still follow what LSU—
03:24LSU has a culture of winning always anyway.
03:27You don't just come in and do what you're supposed to do.
03:29Do what you want to do.
03:30Go do something first.
03:32You know, that's—I don't—I understand what you're saying.
03:35But still, you still should have—the school has to connect with the fam.
03:42It ain't Lane.
03:43So Lane really comes in don't give a damn.
03:46So you got to make sure you try to hold whatever connection you have
03:49be when that coach come in.
03:50Hey, listen.
03:51Listen, we are trying to make sure we don't cause any friction here.
03:55Let's not—we're not going to worry about that number.
03:58I don't know.
03:58And then if he don't want to follow that, then you got to make sure he follows it.
04:03My biggest takeaway is you'd like this to be handled privately.
04:07You'd like this to not get to where it is now.
04:10This is trending on social media.
04:12This is the biggest story in sports this week.
04:14Yeah, it's the biggest story.
04:15It's going to go away and nobody will give a damn next week.
04:17I just—for me, it is—you have a dude that likes to troll in Lane Kiffin.
04:25He very much enjoys kind of needling people.
04:28And I just think he's so focused on winning games in Baton Rouge this fall
04:35that he just is willing to ignore the history of how they run the program.
04:39But see, but you can be willing to ignore what you want,
04:43but that university can't let you ignore their history.
04:47Hands down.
04:48And with their history being one that's not very, very pristine all the damn time
04:52when it comes to African Americans, you damn sure don't want one guy rolling in
04:57and just messing it up.
04:58You know, I grew up across the road from LSU.
05:01I know stuff that people around here that—
05:03everybody that cheer for the Tigers now, if you knew some of the history of it,
05:07you probably wouldn't.
05:08Or you'd have a problem with them.
05:10You'd probably have gotten over it by now like I did too.
05:13But let's not try to act like just because he rolls in town,
05:17Lane Kiffin has been all over the damn place.
05:20He throws grenades every time he leaves somewhere.
05:22So what makes people think automatically he is going to step into the air
05:26and be any better than he was anywhere else?
05:28That's why I think, like, the excitement—
05:31we have a bunch of friends that are LSU people.
05:34Lee Armstrong, huge LSU fan.
05:37Bro, I was cheering for LSU before Lee was born.
05:40Right.
05:40The excitement over Lane—
05:42I'll just let you know what I know.
05:43He's going to be really good in Baton Rouge right until he isn't.
05:46And then the same stuff's going to happen.
05:48That happened at Tennessee.
05:49That happened at USC.
05:50That happened at Ole Miss.
05:52Imagine where he won the net yet.
05:55Nowhere.
05:55Okay.
05:56So this is why I'm saying why does he automatically get the keys
06:02when he rolls in town?
06:04He won no national championship no damn where.
06:06The only difference, and I think you and I see this differently,
06:08that no one's worn Burroughs' number yet, number nine.
06:12And granted, it's only been seven years, right?
06:14That 2019 wasn't that long ago.
06:16They won the national championship.
06:18They went undefeated.
06:19Yeah, but—
06:19That separates the two—
06:21I don't think it separates because the number is not being held
06:24not by the national championship.
06:26The number is being held because you won a Heisman.
06:30That's the only thing that defines both of those situations.
06:32The other dude way back in the day won a natty, too.
06:36Is it Cannon?
06:37Cannon.
06:37Cannon.
06:38Billy Cannon.
06:40To me, there are multiple main characters.
06:43There are protagonists in this play, and Jaden ain't one of them.
06:47Yeah.
06:47Like, listen, man, when we were having a conversation this morning,
06:51we were like, oh, man, the optics.
06:54I don't care about optics, okay?
06:57Because Jaden don't have to do nothing.
06:59It's a lawyer filing papers, and he's focused on, like you said,
07:04on what he needs to do.
07:06I just don't like the fact whenever a player's involved with any situation,
07:10everybody go against the player.
07:13The players sometimes have a right to speak their own and defend themselves, too.
07:18We are not just here to just make everybody else happy
07:22and defend everybody else and support and market everything for everybody else.
07:26Every once in a while, you got to market for your damn self.
07:28And when a player stands up for himself,
07:31there always seems to be a problem with society.
07:34We don't say nothing about people, politicians in this town,
07:38optics of rage screwed up.
07:41Nobody cares.
07:43Why?
07:44So my thing is, they have a right to go out and defend
07:47what they think they might have been told
07:49or what they might have been promised.
07:52And if I feel you didn't keep up your word,
07:56then you can't make no more money off of me.
07:58And as you stated earlier,
08:00it's not about the kid wearing,
08:02it's not that the kid can't wear the jersey.
08:04Let's be super clear.
08:05Don't use my name, image, likeness anymore then.
08:08Since you lied, don't use my name, image, likeness.
08:10I think there's a misconception what the cease and desist letter is about.
08:15The lawyers in no way are trying to claim that they can't give out number five.
08:20They're allowed to give out number five.
08:22They're saying, going forward, since you're choosing to do this,
08:26stop using my name, image, likeness.
08:28And I can tell you, because I've been in a lot of college programs
08:31all over the country,
08:33their biggest stars that go to the pros,
08:35they plaster those faces all over the place.
08:38Believe me, I know.
08:39And not that LSU doesn't have a number of stars to plaster,
08:42but Jaden is everywhere when you walk in there.
08:45And what they're saying is,
08:47you're now not allowed to do that.
08:48I don't know legally how strong that is.
08:52If it's a picture of the team he was on that went to Florida
08:56and beat the hell out of the Gators in the swamp
08:58that Marco Rubio referenced yesterday.
09:00Like, if it's a picture of the team, I'm not sure what they can do.
09:03But I know, like, promotional materials going forward,
09:05what usually college teams do is post pictures of the guys in the pros.
09:10Of the individuals.
09:11Yeah.
09:11Of the guys.
09:12Like, they will show,
09:14they will hang up the jerseys of all the pros they have playing right now,
09:18right?
09:18And maybe they do have a legal claim to strike that.
09:21I'm sure if a lawyer put it out there, they do.
09:25But my thing is,
09:27I, like I told you,
09:28we mentioned this before this team bopped up.
09:30We were talking about retired numbers.
09:31We were talking about the thing with Diggs and Joe the other day.
09:35Mine was retired in 1989.
09:38Okay?
09:39I was still,
09:40I had just finished playing.
09:42And there have been multiple coaches there since then.
09:45The one level of respect I received from every coach was,
09:50if someone asked for that number,
09:52I was called.
09:55And the first time I said yes was a young man who had the balls,
10:00basically,
10:01to step up to me and ask me.
10:02And then he showed me he was handling business as a student athlete.
10:06And I was cool with it.
10:07But as soon as he finished wearing it,
10:09guess what it did?
10:09It went right back.
10:11But every coach that has come along for some reason,
10:14the school,
10:15which is a new president there now,
10:17a new AD is there now,
10:18they still ask me.
10:21You see what I'm saying?
10:22Yep.
10:22So I just think that you come to a point where a level of respect has to be shown.
10:28Like,
10:28when he was there,
10:31he did what they asked him to do.
10:33Performed at a high level and bought them a lot of notoriety.
10:37Give him a level of respect too.
10:39You know,
10:40that's the only thing I'm saying.
10:41But let's not...
10:42I am surprised by the suddenness here.
10:45Jayden was there three years.
10:46If this was eight years later,
10:4912 years later...
10:50Like,
10:50and the thing of it is,
10:52what,
10:53Billy,
10:54Joe,
10:55Jayden.
10:56The three Heisman Trophy winners.
10:58You can't treat them differently.
11:00Even though there's national championships with two out of the three?
11:02Even though there's a national championship.
11:04Because the number was not retired,
11:06or was not put aside,
11:08because they didn't retire.
11:09The only one that's officially retired per se is Cannon.
11:11Right.
11:12The number was not put in those put aside moments because of the Natty.
11:16It was put aside because of the Heisman.
11:19So,
11:19what the team did is not because of what they give you as an individual.
11:25You know,
11:25my teams,
11:27all the years I played,
11:28we were better than average.
11:31But it was about what I did as an individual.
11:34And I think that is what we got to understand.
11:36It ain't got nothing to do with the national championship,
11:38when you're looking at this.
11:40Those guys are praised because their individual accolades were out this damn world.
11:48I do think it's interesting to juxtapose it with the Diggs-Theisman-Commander's discourse.
11:54As Theisman's like,
11:54it's up to the team to do what they want.
11:56And then the team makes this decision down at LSU.
12:00The difference to me,
12:02Joe T played close to 40 years ago.
12:05Jaden was there three years ago.
12:07I just don't think Lane Kiffin cares.
12:09I think he likes kicking up controversy.
12:12That's the thing.
12:13That one person should not be able to come in and cause this big of an issue.
12:18The one thought I did have,
12:20and I know how you get treated when you go back to Lafayette.
12:23And I know how frequently you say the amount of cash that exists in Louisiana.
12:29The amount of giant industry.
12:30Oil.
12:31Sugar cane.
12:32All of it, right?
12:33Seafood galore.
12:34Sure.
12:34All of it.
12:35Maryland crabs.
12:36I mean, in Baton Rouge,
12:39I mean, the dudes from Raising Cane's that started that thing,
12:43every Tiger gets a fat NIL deal, right?
12:47You'd like to think this could get handled privately
12:49because I hope Jaden Daniels plays 25 years in the Burgundy and Gold.
12:53Eventually, a time in his life will come
12:55where it'd be great to go back to Baton Rouge and just feel that love.
12:59Just let those fans.
13:01But see, the thing of it is this.
13:02And I just, I don't know that this will sour that,
13:05but I think it could.
13:05This is where I go with that.
13:07Jaden came to LSU and performed at an outstanding level.
13:13And as you stated and you described,
13:16a mercenary rolled in and decided he didn't give him no,
13:20I don't give a damn about him.
13:22I care about what I'm going to get done.
13:24He'll be gone within three to four years at another school
13:28and he'll be pooping on LSU.
13:31And that person would have been the person who came in
13:34and separated you from the guy that came in here
13:36and brought so much prestige to your school.
13:39That's what the university has to protect more.
13:43You got a lot of coaches.
13:44Like when a coach, if a coach had been somewhere for 20 years
13:47and then finally something happened and he came to your school, cool.
13:51Lane is somewhere every three to four years.
13:53Every two to three years, to be totally honest with you.
13:56So that's the thing I'm looking at.
13:58I'm looking at that dude.
14:00You allow that dude to mess it up.
14:02You know, let's be real.
14:03You got a great relationship
14:05and this person has messed up 15 of the others
14:09and you let her mess up yours.
14:11You'll be stupid, won't you?
