00:00DAP's Chong Zemin has challenged MCA and MIC to state whether they support PAS's
00:06push to use federal power to end gambling nationwide.
00:10The Kampar MP said the issue went beyond gambling and concerned the protection of
00:14non-Muslim interests in Malaysia. Chong argued that with the Barisan Nasional Perikatan Nasional
00:21Electoral Pact, a vote for BN is now a vote to put PAS in Putrajaya and ban gambling.
00:28He said PAS cannot form the federal government on its own, and claimed its most realistic route
00:34to power would be through a government involving UMNO, MCA and MIC. Chong therefore urged MCA
00:41President Rika Xiong and MIC President SA Vigneswaran to make their party's positions clear.
00:47For Chong, MCA and MIC cannot ask Chinese and Indian voters to support BN while
00:53pretending that a vote for BN has nothing to do with PAS.
00:58He stressed that while the prohibition on gambling for Muslims must be respected,
01:02federal law must also protect the constitutional freedoms of non-Muslims.
01:07Chong warned that a nationwide ban would affect activities currently lawful and regulated for
01:13non-Muslims.
01:15It also raises wider questions about whether PAS intended to impose its religious and moral
01:20positions through federal power.
01:23PAS made the call after the federal court rejected Kedah's bid to restore its power
01:27to refuse license renewals for pool betting and lottery operators.
01:32Its ulama council later urged Muslim voters to help put PAS in Putrajaya to eradicate gambling,
01:38saying voting was no longer merely a democratic right but part of Ammar Makroof Nahi Mungkar.
