Following Laremy Tunsil's injury, mass movement on the offensive line is imminent. Can Brandon Coleman slide in and solve the gap?

00:00Laramie Tunsil gonna miss the majority of if not the entirety of this season so a couple of the
00:05options they had on the table that everything I heard right away was they were not gonna try to
00:09go these routes and so far today they've made it pretty clear publicly that's the case the first
00:15would have been Taylor Decker the longtime offensive lineman about to be 33 years old with
00:21the Detroit Lions the last decade Danny they know him really well David Blau started games for
00:25Detroit played quarterback in Detroit while Decker was on that line that's right they have
00:29a pretty close relationship Lance Newmark the assistant GM here to Adam Peters was in Detroit
00:34for many years so there are people those are just the first two that come to mind in this building
00:38that have a pretty good beat on Decker and how much you could help them in this offense the other
00:42thing
00:43to think about is that Decker has played at a pretty high level and would allow you know Coleman to
00:49stay
00:49at guard and maybe if he pushes Paul and starts there it's the best version of your offensive line
00:53so I like the idea I'm kind of into kicking the tires on Decker so far they are not thinking

01:00that direction even though they have all the cap space and the money they want to get a look at
01:03Brandon Coleman he's a former third round pick they like him they're gonna give him the first crack at
01:07this thing the other thing you've heard a lot of people talk about is what about moving Connolly over
01:12to left tackle then you have Andrew Wiley who's played a lot of right tackle in his career let's say
01:17play the right tackle spot that one I don't like at all because you're you're now fixing two
01:22positions with one injury and by fixing I mean you're tweaking right so Connolly A didn't play
01:28at a level that would have made me that much more excited to play him on the left side to
01:32protect
01:33Jaden Daniels blind side start with that but second now he's learning a new position so last year he's
01:38a rookie now he's got a new spot to learn then Tunsell comes back under contract next year and he
01:42goes
01:42back to the right side nothing about that really appeals to me and I don't know how much
01:46thought they actually gave it I think they want to set it and forget it with him on the right
01:49side
01:50let him become the best version of himself and only have one position to really try to fix that
01:57screwed up rather than screwing up another indeed so the cascade effect there right you'd much rather
02:02go one for one if you can now if that doesn't exist if your second best left tackle is your
02:07you know best left guard you just kind of do that and then you know the shuffle happens accordingly
02:11because of the outsized import of that left tackle spot right so if you could just swap somebody in
02:16that may or may not have started for you that's a better way to go now I think these next
02:20week to
02:2110 days will be pivotal in this regard I mean you never know what's going to happen with guys that
02:25are lingering out there in free agency whether somebody snatches them up there's a camp injury or
02:29something else not unlike what Washington just experienced here but yeah I mean you you are not
02:35replacing Laramie Tunsell at this stage because those guys just aren't there right that doesn't exist
02:40even moving Connerly over having him be kind of a mirror image um it's probably not the most
02:44practical thing but still whoever your best left tackle is ultimately that's again not the non-Tunsell
02:51division I think I'd probably prioritize that I just don't know that it happens to be Connerly

03:18further back past that I mean if Diggs is worth a win-win and a half Tunsell probably is worth

03:48investment in the offensive line of course you're not going to replace a Tunsell you're not going to
03:582024 uh Brandon Coleman picking the third round and you look at Josh Connolly who many was saying
04:03ah did we really need him there was Luther Burden was on the board so he's invested you can you

04:09say whatever you want but I think he's invested in the offensive line enough to say you know what
04:13what yeah of course we don't have a uh hall of fame talent just sitting on the bench but we
04:18have
04:19options so all of a sudden we're all talking about this 2024 draft class and this is the year and

04:25was a bust I mean Brandon Coleman might be the most important uh 2024 draft pick right now all of

04:30sudden right I mean I understand the point the context it's obviously Jaden Daniels but given the
04:35fact that you know he's starting he's the dude what you're counting on from from Coleman to sort of
04:40because the organization told you what they thought he went from the left tackle to hey we can do a
04:45lot
04:45better let's see if he's a guard and he can do or let's see if he's the other tackle well

04:53different spots hey by the way we've always believed you knew a left tackle go get him buddy
04:57it's a pretty big ask uh at this point now he did it once and they and they you know

05:01fine better than fine they did great with him there but man it just doesn't feel like that was a
05:06sustainable thing and I don't think they thought so either let me double click on that idea for a
05:10second Danny with you because I've thought about this a lot the last two days or so I think there's
05:16some truth clearly to the idea that every time they've gone with another option along the
05:21offensive line it is in some ways an indictment on Coleman how could it not be right if they just
05:28had the best player in the league at the position then they wouldn't be bringing somebody else in
05:32yep but I think they really really like Leo Chanel don't you yes they signed Leo Chanel this offseason
05:38to good money he's not starting right now there's not really a role for him when Sonny Styles is an
05:43every down player and what happened was they loved Sonny Chanel they signed him for legitimate inside
05:48linebacker money and then lo and behold when they were on the clock at number seven Sonny Styles is
05:54still there and they said we can't pass this up and if it's true that they really really like Chanel
05:59and
05:59there's not really a gig for him my point is just to say that could also happen with a guy
06:04like Coleman
06:04where I think they probably wouldn't have thought it would have been a terrible idea to have him at
06:09left tackle in 2025 but a Hall of Famer came available yeah you got to do it then he's at
06:15right tackle
06:15I've told this story on the show before Coleman told me this last year at camp Adam Peters called
06:21him after they um signed or traded for I guess Laramie Tunsil and said hey man we're moving you
06:27to right tackle we think you're gonna be really good there you're our guy you know don't feel weird
06:32about this okay no problem then draft night he calls him again he goes hey we just drafted Josh
06:36Connerly we're moving you to left guard we really like you there you're our guy don't feel weird
06:41about this and he keeps getting these phone calls sure the first time I really think him getting
06:46benched or not having a job was based on him was guard last year but he's been a much better
06:51tackle
06:51than a guard to the to this point right I mean again I don't know what I don't know someone

06:58you know coached at a very high level could you know break down some of the finer points but to

07:03every time I've seen him play I've gone oh that's pretty good right like I've never had a complaint
07:07about about him I've had complaints about a lot of linemen over the years in this town he's not
07:11one of them and it seems like they to your that's you just sort of laid out with the more
07:16positive
07:16view where it's just like we like you but we got someone a little bit better or we think you
07:20can
07:20finish top five you know just off the metal podium uh you know but these other people are are more
07:25cut
07:26more attractive in the Mr. Olympia thing whatever you know it's he's right there on on the cusp the one
07:31that kind of surprised me to your point last year was him not winning the guard job and I guess
07:34that's just pure merit at this point but again he was to me adequate with the arrow trending up
07:39at left tackle two years ago but as you said a whole family becomes available the other side is
07:45if you've got a guy like this year they wouldn't have drafted a left tackle because you had a guy
07:50right there's no way they would have drafted a right tackle because they think they got a guy
07:53in Connerly maybe we'll we'll find out this year but that's the it's two sides of the same coin
07:57let me ask you this let me ask you this did you feel better about Josh Connerly's rookie season
08:03at right tackle then you did Brandon Coleman's at left tackle great question because to me the
08:08reason that they were ready to move on I don't want to say move on but they were more inclined
08:12to go get someone he was a third round pick yeah if Josh Connerly was a third round pick who

08:17had the year we might be doing the same dance yeah he'd be having a different right tackle right
08:20actually I mean I wonder I'd have to ask Logan and some other people that study the tape better than
08:24I do I I think Coleman had a better rookie year than Connerly did now that is a different
08:30conversation than the way teams view this that that is like I'm gonna get you Nat's perspective
08:35here that's like a fan who watched this year going Luis Garcia has had an awesome year and
08:40there's just so much context to it that a baseball guy would say yeah he can never do this again

08:44not sustainable you know this is not who he actually is his chase rate is this whereas with Connerly
08:49he is more athletic he's got there's a reason he went in the first round two rounds earlier
08:52like all of the variables everything on the design of character in Madden the grades are higher does
08:57that make sense all the traits all the so yeah you're gonna like Connerly better and maybe that's
09:01the point but I just think in terms of performance like I thought Brandon Coleman was a league average
09:07left tackle in his rookie year I don't think he played like a win I agree but he didn't play

09:12that at guard and so that's why he kind of lost that gig let's go to Shane in Fairfax Laramie

09:18hurt and for the first time in camp we're a little stressed what's going on buddy

10:07our future as you say he's our future and Decker can play like the guy can play he's still 33

10:30and it's still a lot of unprecedented now you got this injury with with uh tonsil I mean right now
10:36Dan Quinn is sweating his you know what off right now well that's because it's 114 degrees in
10:43Ashburn but maybe he's proverbially also sweating there's two reasons perhaps for all of the
10:49perspiration I think they'll if they go get Decker it means less about left tackle and more about the
10:55rest of the line in my opinion I don't think they're as worried about Coleman at left tackle
11:00but I do wonder if they started like the way Quinn was talking about Coleman two or three days ago

11:08Ashburn in the mornings it was as if he had a chance to start at left guard so if they're
11:13worried
11:13about the guard spot they've signed like three linemen in the last week there's something happening
11:18on the interior that they do not like I don't just mean center they're signing guards they're
11:21bringing guys in here Quinn was asked about it he's like yeah we're trying to elevate the production
11:25really push some guys it's clearly I don't know if it's Chris Paul I don't know exactly what's going
11:30on but my spidey senses Tom Holland style are that maybe the the guard spot other than Cosme is not
11:37something they feel great about right now well my answer to that would be not to move Coleman then
11:42go get Decker plug him in at left tackle and don't worry about moving Coleman over I think he could
11:47play
11:47left tackle okay but I know Decker can right and this is why you have the cap space this is
11:52why you
11:52you know you saved it so that when Diggs came available you could get him you want to bring
11:55in Decker for a one-year deal and it got to have its season for Daniels go do it maybe
12:00in a year or
12:00two from now after you've already paid Daniels or something this is a different conversation but
12:05while he makes no money while you have some cash and while you're still trying to prove yourself that
12:11this regime should be around that Daniels is the guy why not just check as many boxes as possible
12:16yeah you know my view on this if there's a dollar to be spent and it's to be spent on
12:20either maximizing
12:21or protecting the quarterback on his rookie deal you spend it so if if they need again I think this
12:26week is major if they determine that their best option is Coleman or their best line includes
12:30Coleman left tackle Paul who's the incumbent starter at left guard you know godspeed let's go but if if
12:35if there's a inclination that Decker might be a better option then that's the that's the answer
12:41right there then you you stop having any kind of discussion and you set a world record for sprinting
12:46to call his agent maybe Wednesday's practice with the Dolphins will be the tipping point
12:51if it goes well up front maybe you kick the can down the road another week but if you're in
12:56shambles
12:58up front and the Dolphins eat your lunch then perhaps you make the phone call I mean it's actually a

13:04timed joint practice and obviously preseason game one is going to be a great time to evaluate a lot of
13:09the starters won't go but I think if you need to see more from Chris Paul or you want to
13:13get a look at
13:14Brandon Coleman there's no reason to put these guys in bubble wrap like play them evaluate them
