Vinny and Haynie evaluate the Ravens trading for Eagles center Cam Jurgens and how it shakes up the offensive line. Plus, the latest on Lamar Jackson's injury and can the defense slow down Bijan Robinson?
Transcript
00:00The Philadelphia Eagles, two-time Pro Bowl center, playing guard this year out of necessity.
00:07And as the stats have said, Vinny, not playing it all that great.
00:12No.
00:12But we'll get into that as the show rolls on in concussion protocol, I believe, right now.
00:18Yes.
00:19Because he got banged up in their last game.
00:21He wasn't even, Bob, making the trip to London or wherever they're playing.
00:25He was not going to be on the trip.
00:26But so Cam Juergens comes in, Ravens sacrifice a fifth round in 27, second rounder, 28.
00:35And at my age, Utrecht Betts didn't kiss my ass.
00:39I'm all about the immediate.
00:41Let's get this guy in here and help the team.
00:44But we also heard Jesse talking about the offensive schemes and getting caught up to speed and coming from the
00:50Philly system.
00:51And then you had Doyle, by the way of Ben Johnson, Sean Payton.
00:56I mean, there's a whole tree there.
00:59Is this something that would take him time to, health permitting, lamp himself into?
01:06It might take him a little long.
01:10You know, the coordinators he's been with, I think the one, I think, isn't Robinson the guy they have now
01:16or something?
01:16I think he came from the Rams.
01:17So that's West Coast.
01:20That's Kyle Shanahan.
01:21It's still zone stuff.
01:22And the thing that makes Juergens fit so well is he's athletic.
01:28And that's the same thing that they do in Philly.
01:30They're reach blocking and doing those things.
01:32And that's why they would want him.
01:35Now, he's been hurt the last couple years.
01:39And like this year, yeah, he has not been playing well at all.
01:43But last year he had, and like you said yesterday, Bob, he had the back surgery.
01:47And he was hurt a lot last year.
01:51The year before he played very well, where he was a legitimate Pro Bowl center.
01:57So does that help the team?
01:59I think this, Bob, and I've said it for like four or five or probably a week now.
02:05I thought that Venga could be the best center in the league.
02:10But then, you know, you go to Declan and you say, okay, what is the most important?
02:18Is it more important for you to have a great guard or a great center?
02:25And I'm talking about Venga because I think Venga can be great at either.
02:29And it sounds like guard is, you know, more valuable than the center.
02:37But they feel like they have a really good center now in Juergens.
02:41So where does Venga go?
02:45I think this year Bobby goes to right guard.
02:47Next year he goes to left guard.
02:49And then Emory Jones Jr. is the right guard next year.
02:52And Juergens is the center.
02:53And then you've got three young guys.
02:55And that would seem to be the master plan when they drafted Venga in the first place.
02:59And when they brought Simpson and John Simpson to play left guard, then Venga would do his rookie tour, if
03:06you will, at right guard and assume left guard for years and years and years.
03:10Remember, Jonathan Ogden was drafted as a tackle, number four overall pick out of UCLA, and played guard for the
03:18Ravens his rookie year because they had booking Tony Jones.
03:22I mean, they had tackles that could play and eventually moved to left tackle his sophomore year and became, you
03:27know, Hall of Famer, arguably one of the greatest left tackles ever.
03:31But you bringing up Venga at center, I'm very intrigued and excited by the possibilities of him being that dude,
03:44man.
03:44And look, as we just talked about, Juergens not rating out well a guard this year for penalties and tons
03:53of missed blocks and all that good stuff.
03:56But what if Venga goes out Sunday against Atlanta and plays like, you know, one of the great centers, plays
04:05like Ray Donaldson or somebody like that.
04:07But, Bob, more so than that, what if Emory Jones Jr. has a hell of a game?
04:11Yeah.
04:14Because I thought he got better.
04:16And, you know, now with the confidence, I'm sure when they traded for Juergens, Emory Jones Jr., like, eh.
04:25You know, because he knows that, you know, that he's.
04:28Because Simpson gets status because they signed him as a pre-agent veteran, I guess.
04:34Yeah.
04:34Isn't it all performance-based, ultimately, though?
04:39You would think.
04:41The only thing is, is I don't think Venga's taken any reps at the left guard.
04:47You know, and you say, well, that should be easy.
04:49I want to say that if you're left guard, you put your left hand down.
04:54And if you're right guard, you put your right hand down.
04:55So it's a little different.
04:57But I'm sure Venga, I mean, heck, if he, you know, moved to center during the middle of the game,
05:03he could handle playing left guard, and I'm sure Emory Jones Jr. could, too.
05:07But it'll be, well, it's a good problem to have if both those guys play great Sunday night.
05:13And Simpson, you know, if Simpson, what if Simpson plays bad and the other two play great?
05:19You know, so they have, gives you some options, I guess.
05:22But for sure, getting Cam Juergens, they gave up some capital, they have to pay him.
05:28He's playing.
05:29Oh, yeah, he's making pretty good bucks.
05:31How effective he will be remains to be seen at what position as well.
05:36Vidi and Haiti, 105.7, the fan, total request Thursday.
05:39Pick a song, we'll play it, send a request.
05:41Green told the tax line at 410583.
05:441057, Dolan's on the other side of the glass.
05:46No Lamar practice yesterday.
05:49And we're going to hear Jesse Mentor talking about that as the show rolls on.
05:53Didn't rule him out.
05:55Even said he could play without practicing this week.
06:00But usually, Vinny, that's not a recipe for success.
06:04Yeah.
06:05Bob, I did ask my wife, I said, I said, hey, Becky.
06:08I said, they said it's not a low ankle and it's not a high ankle.
06:14I said, is there a middle ankle?
06:15She said, I've never heard of a middle ankle.
06:17She said, there's a, like a mid ankle?
06:23There's a different type of ankle sprain that is on the inside or it's on the opposite side or whatever.
06:29And if you tore ligaments, then you miss.
06:33That was Ian Rappaport.
06:34Yeah.
06:35Said it was not a high or low ankle sprain.
06:38It was a unique injury.
06:39So, if he tore, what she said is, if he tore ligaments, then it's a few, then it could be
06:47a couple weeks.
06:47But if he didn't tear ligaments, then you could tape it up and probably go.
06:54All right.
06:55The trade went down.
06:56We were on the air when it happened.
06:58Almost 24 hours ago.
06:59You've had a chance, ladies and gentlemen, to dissect and do your research and understand the needs and the sacrifices
07:06the Ravens gave up capital-wise.
07:08Are you cool with the deal?
07:10Cam Juergens comes to Baltimore.
07:11We'll talk about this.
07:12Tom Kelly from WIP up in Philly.
07:15He'll be joining us at 1230.
07:17And let us know what the Ravens, in fact, are getting with a two-time pro bowler.
07:22So, feel free to do so.
07:23Lamar, don't go.
07:25Are the Ravens in trouble?
07:26I said it yesterday, and Vic Carucci, we were talking to him, even if Lamar plays, it's not going to
07:33be an easy game.
07:34No.
07:34And it's obviously not going to be Lamar at 100%.
07:36No.
07:37So, Atlanta, I'm more concerned, Vinny, with what they bring to the equation offensively, which we'll talk about when we
07:44break them down on film.
07:46Yep.
07:46The last two games, they put up 80 points.
07:50Oh, I know.
07:51And games in which they were expected to lose, and they won pretty convincingly.
07:57So, Penix, does he lighten the dial?
08:01No.
08:02But he's brought an element that Cooper Rush certainly wasn't bringing to the equation.
08:07Yeah, I think he brings some confidence.
08:09And I think the ability to throw the football where Cooper Rush couldn't.
08:13And all of a sudden, Bijan is, you know, unbelievable.
08:19I still think this, Bob.
08:21I think this is a game, even if Lamar doesn't play, defense can win this game.
08:29And has the defense played great this year?
08:31Not consistently.
08:32Not for a whole game.
08:33No.
08:34So, they're going to have to play a sound, fundamental game and tackle well and not have dumb penalties.
08:41You know, not give explosive plays.
08:43Because if they lunge to try to tackle Bijan, if they lunge and leave their feet, they're getting air with
08:51this guy.
08:51It's going to be the best back that they'll see all year.
08:55So, this is going to be a challenge for the defense.
08:58And I'm sure that that's what Jesse's preaching all week.
09:02This is going to be the best back that you play against.
09:04Might be the best receiver that you play against, too.
09:07So, it's a big challenge for the defense.
09:11And we're going to get into the schedule, too, for the Ravens, which now gets a little more difficult here.
09:15Oh, boy, yes, it does.
09:16Moving forward.
09:17So, they're 3-1.
09:18Lucky to be 3-1.
09:20Hey, they could be 4-0.
09:21But the record is what it is.
09:23Now you have to navigate through some interesting things.
