00:05confirmed that Chinese-made parts were used in the unmanned surface drone K-3 Scout, which is
00:09actually being used by the British Navy and Marines for special operations. The seriousness
00:14of this incident isn't just that Chinese-made parts were used. The issue is that the camera
00:19installed in the part was connected to an external network and was sending heartbeat
00:23communications, which confirmed normal operation, to a Chinese IP address. The K-3 Scout is a key
00:29unmanned platform in Project BIV, which aims to create a future UK naval force combining
00:34unmanned vessels and manned warships. It is designed to carry a payload of about 600
00:39kg it can sail at a maximum speed of 100 kmh and is capable of operating at sea for up
00:44to 30 days.
00:46Since this is military equipment introduced by the UK to strengthen its maritime surveillance and
00:50reconnaissance capabilities, the level of security is extremely important. A problem arose because the
00:56British defense company that made this drone sourced the camera from a third party instead of producing
01:00it themselves. They trusted the security of the camera provided by the company and installed it,
01:06but during the actual investigation it was confirmed that the camera was communicating with the outside.
01:11It was found that the heartbeat communication used to check equipment status was being sent to a
01:15Chinese IP address. What the British military is taking most seriously here is when this communication
01:21started what kind of information could have been exchanged and whether the same parts were used in
01:25other military equipment. Because the drone was used by the British Navy and Marines for operations and
01:31training, there are concerns it may have exposed military facilities and operational environments.
01:35A bigger concern is that this equipment may have been used in facilities related to the SBS,
01:40the British Navy's elite special forces. Information about special forces facilities,
01:44personnel and training requires a high level of security.
01:47The mere fact that cameras connected to external networks were operating in such areas is enough
01:52for the UK Ministry of Defense to consider it a serious security issue. After finding the issue,
01:57the UK Ministry of Defense disconnected the cameras from the internet. They said there is
02:01no evidence so far of any data or systems being accessed or transmitted externally.
02:06Therefore, it is not yet at a stage where it can be concluded that China has obtained classified
02:09information from the British military. Finding external communications linked to China in military
02:14equipment is raising serious concerns about the British military supply chain and security checks.
