01:41The Florida Keys are a chain of tropical islands
01:44that extend into the Florida Straits.
01:47And for me, the Florida Keys are unfinished business.

01:52It's actually my dream to actually go to the Keys,

01:56Yeah, my mum wanted to go to the Keys.

01:59We never, ever was able to go.

02:01The Florida Keys are a dividing line
02:05between the Atlantic Ocean to the east
02:07and the Gulf of Mexico to the west.
02:10And the island and waters around them
02:12are home to some of the most diverse wildlife
02:15in all of America.
02:17Look at that vast east.
02:19Big, isn't it?
02:20Really big.
02:22But these islands are also a playground
02:25for more than five million travellers every year.
02:28And yes, me and Aid are adding to that number.

04:34Luckily, the Florida Keys are a great distraction.

04:43Once you cross over the causeway from South Miami into the Florida Keys,
04:47you're a world away from the busy streets and traffic of the mainland.
04:52And first up is Key Largo, the largest of the Florida Keys and home to a natural odyssey.
04:58The world's first undersea park with coral reefs and sea life that the park's been protecting for over 50 years.
05:07Key Largo is the gateway to more than 1,700 islands.
05:11So to really appreciate the scale and nature of this archipelago, we're not going down into the sea.
05:18We're going up into the sky for a gall's eye view of the natural world.
05:24But this isn't going up, up and away in a helicopter or plane.
05:28We're going parasailing.
05:30I'm well up for it, but Aidan's not so sure.
05:35I am a little bit nervous, I'm not going to lie.
05:37Aidan's really nervous.
05:38I've had a chat with him.
05:39The thing is, if two people parasail, it's more cost effective.
05:44It's what my mum would call bulk buying.
05:47I need to get Aidan up in the air, pronto.

08:50The waters around Key Largo are home to hundreds of species of fish and marine life.

09:02If my eyesight was better, I might see a manatee down there, or even a sea turtle or two.

09:14The reef here is a natural barrier, protecting these islands from erosion and heavy storms.

11:17Charging stations are thin on the ground in these parts compared to the mainland.
11:21With most of the chargers either up this way in Key Largo or way down the other end at Key
11:28West.
11:28So, to avoid being stranded on 0% charge, Aidan's on all-important battery duty.

14:24You know, even though you sometimes can't get a word in edgeways with these electric cars.

14:32They're becoming more and more popular around here.
14:35America's been in love with gas guzzlers for decades.
14:37But times and weather are changing fast.
14:42Florida's been hit with some serious hurricanes in recent times.
14:46Like Hurricane Milton and Hurricane Helen.
14:50Scientists are warning that climate change is cranking up the heat on these storms.
14:55And it's not just the hurricanes that Floridians worry about.
14:58Down here in the Florida Keys, most of the land is barely a few feet above water.
15:03So even a small rise in sea level could leave these islands facing regular floods and put whole communities in
15:10jeopardy.
15:12So folks like Lindsay Peterson are rethinking the way they live.
15:17Lindsay's been cooking up quite the following with her food truck just south of Key Lago.
15:21Right off the overseas highway at Isla Morada.
15:25Her sustainable sandwiches really pack a punch.
15:28Especially her signature bar me.
15:30Which has been going down an absolute storm with locals and tourists.
15:37When I moved down here six years ago, I wanted to do something that was for myself.
15:42So we ended up buying this little tiny food trailer.
15:45It's 12 feet long.
15:46Opening this food truck has just completely changed my life.
15:51So this is going to be our banh mi sandwich.
15:53We're going to throw some of our locally sourced watermelon radishes in here.
15:57Then we're going to go with some jalapenos for the spice.
16:01And then some carrots for a little bit more crunch and earthiness.
16:06And we're going to let that sit while we prepare everything else.
16:10We've gotten through some of the toughest times down here when other restaurants were closing.
16:14We stayed afloat.
16:16And we're going to let that baby toast.
16:20And we're going to go ahead and throw our tofu on as well.
16:25The majority of our customer base is not vegan.
16:27Most of them are carnivores.
16:29And it's actually really surprising when people try the food,
16:32they're kind of taken back at how vegetables can taste so good.
16:37And we just like to crust this with cumin and salt.
16:41I don't know why you've not had good vegetables before,
16:44but I'm glad I could make it happen for you.
16:49More recently, I've noticed a lot of people who are visiting here on holiday.
16:54They're really taking the time to make sure that they're taking care of the environment while they're on vacation.
17:00You know, they're not leaving trash everywhere.
17:02They're choosing to buy water that's in compostable containers or glass containers.
17:07They're taking care of our environment here because everybody who lives here, we all do that.
17:12We're all deeply invested in what happens here because at the end of the day,
17:15if our environment isn't taken care of, we can't be taken care of.
17:20We're going to flip our tofu.
17:23I think that people hear the word veganism and they automatically think of a radical idea
17:28where you have to completely change your life, and that's not what we're trying to do.
17:32We're trying to make people realize that you don't have to be vegan all the time.
17:36Give it a shot.
17:36You might be, you know, pleasantly surprised at what you really like and, you know, what is out there.
17:44Now we're going to go ahead and take our tofu and we're going to lay it on the sandwich.
17:50And this is really just such a beautiful sandwich because it's so vibrant in color and it's all natural.

18:08Wherever you go in the Florida Keys, you're never too far from a lovely sea view.

18:19In more ways than one.

18:23The Florida Keys stretch out like a fishing line cast into the Gulf of Mexico.
18:28The islands are so teeny tiny that most of the time it's just you, the road and the ocean on
18:34either side.
18:36As you cruise along the overseas highway, the islands in this northern half of the Florida Keys sit on an
18:42ancient coral reef.
18:44Which is a natural playground for all sorts of marine life.
18:47Fish, dolphins and sea turtles.
18:51But the Keys are also an attractive environment for watersport lovers, anglers, sailors, divers and travellers.
18:59So making money from all these visitors while keeping the wildlife safe is a tricky old balancing act.
19:06And marine life can often come off second best.
19:09That's why in Marathon, right at the heart of the Keys, you'll find a hospital that's been rescuing and rehabilitating
19:16injured sea turtles since 1986.
19:19We've arrived at visiting time.
19:22Hello.
19:22Hi.
19:24And hospital manager, Betty Zirkleback is going to introduce us to some of her patients.
19:30How many turtles do you get?
19:31Right now we have about 40 sea turtles, but we get anywhere from 100 to 120 a year.
19:36And we've had as many as 200 at one time.
19:38And how are they all doing at the minute?
19:40Some are okay.
19:41Some are critical care, just like in a human hospital.
19:44We have our ICU and then we have our patients that are doing better than others.
19:47And then we have what we call non-releasables and they're our permanent residents.
19:51And they are actually blood donors for other sick turtles.
19:53Aww.
19:54So what is the routine that you go to to bring the turtles here?
19:58I have an incredibly dedicated animal care team.
20:00They live on site.
20:01We man a hotline for strandings seven days a week, 365 days a year.
20:06So six out of ten of our rescue calls actually come from people just like you that come through our
20:11center and are out on the water and they call us when they see a sick sea turtle.
20:14We respond, we have ambulances, believe it or not, for sea turtles.
20:18And we go to the dock and pick up the turtle.
20:20If we need to go out to sea, we get on the boat.
20:23Okay, well I don't know what a sick turtle looks like.
20:25Neither.
20:25Can we see some turtles?
20:26We can see. You want to come meet some patients?
20:28Yes, please do.
20:28All right, let's go.
20:30Just like a human hospital, they've got operating theatres here so they can do all kinds of turtle surgery.
20:37And then there's the intensive care unit where sick or injured turtles can recuperate.
20:43Every turtle gets a name here.
20:45So no doubt this little guy will have an exotic and impressive turtle name like Donatello or Leonardo or...
20:54Cute.
20:54And this is Bob.
20:56Or Bob.
20:57Who gets to name them?
20:59So the rescuers get to name them, which is a really nice benefit of rescuing a turtle.
21:03Oh, that's so cute.
21:04And Bob is what we call a juvenile green sea turtle.
21:08There are seven species of sea turtles in the world and we're lucky enough to see five of those species
21:13in and around the Florida Keys.
21:14He looks pretty healthy.
21:15What's wrong with him?
21:16Yeah, so Bob had these horrific tumours and also had some entanglement.
21:21You can see some fishing line there.
21:23Oh yeah.
21:23But the good news is Bob is tumour free and soon to be returned to his ocean.
21:28Oh, that's so lovely.
21:30So that really is the goal with every turtle that comes into the turtle hospital is to try to get
21:34it healthy enough to go back to the wild.
21:36And he's doing really well, our Bob.
21:37You can see how strong he's swimming. He's actually playing a little bit over there.
21:41Bob is actually going to be released probably within the next two weeks.
21:44What's the procedure of releasing a turtle?
21:46So we make a big event of it. We invite the general public. We go to a local beach and
21:51we'll take Bob and we'll take about 15 minutes to educate the public on Bob and cases like Bob.
21:57And then we'll set him in the sand and he'll go out to sea.
22:02As well as releasing turtles like Bob back into the wild, the hospital's rescue and rehabilitation team make sure as
22:09many newborn turtles as possible make it to the ocean.
22:13Today, Tom Higgins is leading a team on Sombrero Beach as they check out a nest that hatched out 48
22:20hours ago.
22:21The reason we do that is we not only want to get down there and we want to get a
22:24count on how many eggs hatched, how many eggs did not hatch.
22:28But every once in a while, we do find a live turtle that is stuck down there in the hole,
22:31maybe stuck in some weeds.
22:34A careful excavation reveals good news, an empty nest and lots of empty shells.
22:41So all the hatchlings looked like they took the right path.
22:44We got down to what is considered the cup, which is as far as the female can kind of get
22:49those flippers down and it becomes hard again.
22:51The sand actually changes. As we're digging through there, it's very soft and you can tell where she's been.
22:56Once we get down to the bottom of the cup, we can determine that the entire area has been cleared
23:00out.
23:00So this nest was a success and it's hats off to the latest generation of little turtles from Sombrero Beach.
23:09Found 82 eggs that had hatched out, only one egg did not hatch out and luckily this time there were
23:14no hatchlings left in there so all their little scurry marks made it down to the water the other morning.
23:18Back at the hospital, it's time for some spa treatment and much as I'd love a facial and some massage
23:25therapy, this is a session for a loggerhead turtle.
23:29Her name is Madea and after a slow but dignified exit from the water that I can totally relate to,
23:36it's time for Tom to begin her treatment.
23:43A few years ago, Madea was struck by a boat and suffered what you might call a pretty severe shell
23:50shock.
23:50You can actually still see the propeller marks here. You'll see that a little bit better once we get her
23:55cleaned up.
23:56But she is living a happy and healthy life. She is an ambassador for her species now, so that's what
24:02she will be for the rest of her life.
24:04Is she trying to say hello to her? She absolutely is. Hello. So we're going to get started on the
24:09scrub here.
24:10And what are you scrubbing off? What is that? It is a little bit of algal growth that will happen
24:15naturally.
24:16In the wild, she would have things like cleaner fish and cleaner shrimp out there on the ocean floor, out
24:21there by the reef and they would help keep her clean a little bit.
24:23She's going to spend a little bit more time on the surface here because of her injuries, so that's why
24:27we're just getting her cleaned up.
24:28These are soft wire brushes. They do not hurt the turtle in any way.
24:31We're just kind of getting that little dirt layer and algae off of her.
24:35With the algae scrubbed away, you can see the damage where the boat propeller sliced into Medea's shell.
24:42That is actually the top of her lung. No!
24:45Yes. So this whole area was open at one point, but it slowly...
24:49It could. It slowly fills in over time.
24:52Because of her injuries, Medea will be at the hospital for the rest of her life.
24:56But with a spa session every week, there are worse places for a turtle to be.
25:01I think she's enjoying this.
25:02She absolutely is. Their shells are very tactile, meaning they feel everything that we're doing and they actually very much
25:08like the scrubbing.
25:09So why is it important for people to visit the hospital?
25:12Well, the admission that is derived from coming into the hospital goes back to the care of these beautiful animals.
25:18We can see anywhere from five to six hundred people per day come through these doors.
25:23But it also gets a great appreciation for the sea turtles and that's what we really want to do is
25:27educate the public about these beautiful animals and what they can do to help save them in the future from
25:33what is going on with their species right now.
25:35A simple thing we can all do to help the wildlife of the Florida Keys is to take all of
25:41our trash and plastics away with us.
25:43Sea turtles often mistake the rubbish we leave behind for food, which can choke them or block them up and
25:50lead to starvation.
25:51While discarded fishing lines and nets can be a deadly tangle trap.

26:29She has been here for five years. She's been here all the time that I've been here.
26:33And when she first came in, I kind of spent a lot of time with her in the very beginning.
26:37And she is a fantastic version of the already wonderful loggerhead sea turtle.

26:48And so Medea, the magnificent lady loggerhead, returns to the water refreshed after a super spa session.

27:14I think we have. I mean, look at the car we've got.

27:18It's actually made me think I might get an electric car when I go back home, you know.

27:22And we're not eating any meat. We've been sustainable.

27:42Now I've lost a little bit of weight, you know, carving up, taking away some of the timber base.
27:47I was able to just do it with ease, so for me, it was like living life.
