01:51And although I love celebrity chit-chat and a pool-side party as much as anyone,
01:56I'm not here for the glitz and the flashy surface layers.

02:05So, me and Aidan are downtown to show you the Miami-easy-isms.

02:26But I want to experience, like, the real Miami.
02:29This is one of the most diverse cities in the whole of the world,
02:32so I want to really know what it's like to experience Miami with the people.

02:38And let's start as we mean to go on, shall we?
02:41No flash car for us, no stretch limo,
02:44because Miami is pricey enough to get around as it is.
02:48Cab costs here are London and New York prices, so we're playing it smart.
02:52We've done our research and found a free way to get around the city.
02:56With a trolley tracker app on our phone,
02:59we can keep track of Miami's famous and completely free trolleybuses.

03:09for exploring some of Miami's iconic neighbourhoods.

03:35taking you back to a time when streetcars were the main mode of transport

03:48We are off to Little Havana,
03:51which is like this small, beautiful Cuban community,
03:55slap bang in the centre of Miami.
03:57We're leaving Miami's high-flying financial district
04:01and heading down south-west 7th Street.
04:04And you can feel the city changing.
04:06It's bye-bye Wall Street, hello the roads,
04:09a neighbourhood of quiet avenues, gorgeous old houses
04:13and old-school Miami charm.
04:15The trolleybus isn't the quickest way to travel.
04:18It does go round the houses a bit.
04:20But that just adds to it for me.
04:22We're passing through parts of Miami most tourists never see
04:26and meeting Miami-ums we'd never normally meet.
04:29Like this dude.
04:30I wonder where he's going.
04:31The shops, the library,
04:34to get a super strong cup of coffee.
04:36Maybe all three.
04:38So what type of people do you get on here?
04:40Are they going to work? Are they going home?
04:42What are they doing?
04:42Right.
04:43Most of the people are during the weekdays
04:45just going to work or shopping.
04:46You get a lot of senior citizens and everything like that.
04:49But on Fridays and Saturday nights,
04:52because it goes down Little Havana by your hotel,
04:55you get all the drunks coming on.

04:58And the driver sees them and he knows them.

05:03Yes.
05:03I can imagine some colourful scenes on this bus.
05:06But you know you're living in a close-knit community
05:08when, after a lively night out,
05:11you get a free trip home on a bus
05:13that's probably going to be driven by one of your mates.
05:15I love the fact that this is absolutely free of charge.
05:19No money.
05:19Anyone can get on.
05:20It is and it's a good idea.
05:23I think it allows not only the local population,
05:26but tourists too, to get a real taste.

05:31As you'd expect on a bus heading to Little Havana,
05:34there's a lot of Cubans hopping on.
05:36About a third of the population of Miami has Cuban roots.
05:40But there's loads of other Latin Americans in the city too.
05:44And they're all locals.
05:47Mexicans, Nicaraguans.
05:48A lot of different people.
05:49Obviously a lot of people from like Haiti, Puerto Rico,
05:52Americans themselves.
05:53And that's what makes Miami so beautiful.
05:55Mix over here.
05:56And that's one thing I like.
05:58And that's another thing that I feel like you'll find

06:30Little Havana's main street,
06:32where the coffee and cigars are as strong as the accents.
06:36And the music will have you doing a salsa
06:38before you've even touched your second cafecito.
06:41I can feel the strictly rhythm it's going to get me.
06:44This street is alive with the sights, sounds and flavours of Cuba.
06:48It's full of little walk-up bars and cafes,
06:51or offering a much cheaper way to eat and drink
06:54than a sit-down restaurant.

06:59So we're on our way to a juice bar
07:01to meet up with our local guide for the day.

07:24It is literally just the pulp of mangoes
07:26that grow freely in our backyards here in tropical Miami.

07:40This fruiteria is run by Guillermina Hernandez,
07:44the grandmother of Little Havana,
07:46who's been making some of the best fruit juices in town
07:49for the last 60 years.
07:52In 1963, when Carolina first opened this bar,
07:56a wave of Cuban immigrants were flooded into Miami,
07:59and most never left.
08:01This is where the first Cuban exiles or refugees
08:04that fled the Castro brothers' Cuban revolution 65 years ago
08:08landed and started their new lives
08:11and their adopted new nation, okay?
08:13And opened up their businesses along this mean drag, if you will.
08:18Oh, well, I love it here.
08:19I'll tell you, as far as an American ethnic enclave,
08:24I dare say it is terminally unique.
08:27One of the coolest streets, at least in North America.

09:42Fidel's store has been here since the 70s and while people come here mainly for the clothes, the hats and
09:47the shoes, whether they ask for it or not, they get a big dose of Fidel as well.

10:10This is the four pockets that they've been using since the 1820s, but now we have come here.

10:17This is instead of the four pockets, the younger guys prefer two pockets.

10:22And it's cut a lot slimmer because the younger guys don't want to dress like their grandfathers.

10:30Basically, in 1820, a Cuban farmer marries a seamstress.

10:34He used to pick guayas in buckets.
10:36She comes out with this shirt and says, no more buckets.
10:40From now on, you put your guayas here.
10:41He says he was happy with that.
10:43What are these for?
10:44These are for your cigars.
10:45Right.
10:45So now you have a place for your cigars, your guayas.
10:48And if you look, she took it a bit further.

14:11Actually, it was like having a personal shopper.
14:13And also learning about what each pocket does and each meaning of how it was made, what
14:18things were for back in them days.

14:25And then you end up with the whole outfit.
14:26Now that you wear this outfit, you're actually wearing the history as well.

14:38Cuba is just 220 miles from Miami.
14:41So when Fidel Castro turned Cuba into a communist country in 1959, many Cubans hopped across the
14:49straits of Florida to the US of A.
14:54And most of them settled in the Miami area, here in Little Havana and nearby Hialeah.
15:00Not just because of the cheap housing and the jobs, but because of the community here.
15:06Places where Cubans could keep speaking Spanish, shop in familiar stores, and of course, enjoy a bit of that Latino
15:13flavor in everything from the food to the music.
15:22So as we've had a taste of Little Havana and got the whole Cuban look sorted, I reckon it's about
15:28time we mastered some Latino moves.
15:31We've heard that this is the place to get a salsa lesson that's perfectly in step with our budget.
15:37Because it's free.
15:39Our teachers are Isabella Amor and Salsa Supremo, Rene Rodriguez.
15:45This is an iconic Miami venue.
15:47Originally in the 50s, it was actually a jazz venue.
15:50Sure.
15:51But in recent years, it's become one of the epitome of Latin music in Miami.
15:56There's a lot of great life music here.
16:00There's a lot of dancing and a lot of salsa, which is what you came to do with us.
16:04Is this where the locals kind of hang out? Is this where the community is?
16:08Well, you do get a lot of locals, young and old, and a lot of tourists too.
16:14People come from all over the world like you guys.
16:16And I love the fact that you do these free lessons. Tell me a bit about that.
16:19We do have salsa lessons for everybody to be able to kind of learn the basic steps.
16:24So that once the band is playing, you feel confident enough to get out on the dance floor and do
16:29a little something.
16:32This is going to be great.
16:33I'm always up for throwing some shipes on the dance floor.
16:36You guys are ready. We're ready to teach you a little salsa lesson.

21:13transforming a no-go parking lot
21:15into a place where local African-American and Caribbean people
21:18mix, sing, dance and pray in some style every week.
21:24What does a church like this do to the community around here?
21:28That's what it is.

22:15When somebody comes into our service for the first time,
22:17we welcome them with open hands,
22:19cos a lot of times they're going through the trials
22:21and they're frustrated.

22:25And we just show them love.
22:27Now, although my church back in Birmingham can be a lively place,
22:30I've never seen anything quite like this before.
