01:40A couple things I want to get into from yesterday.
01:43And I guess we'll talk a little bit about Christian Gonzalez and A.J.
01:47Brown getting a little heated and not from the humidity yesterday.
01:52What was that like?
01:55So this has been something that I have been tracking all week.
01:58It's really been the most fun part of camp is watching these two guys go up against each
02:02other, especially when they're doing 1v1 or 2v2 drills.
02:07And to begin the week when they were in the field house because they had that horrible
02:12rainstorm earlier this week, that was when A.J.
02:15Brown jammed his thumb up going up against Christian Gonzalez.
02:18And it was really, I think, that practice throughout in the bubble when the trash talking,
02:24from what we could see, really started ramping up to the point that it's both guys jawing
02:29against each other.
02:30Yesterday, there was a situation where Keyshawn Booty, after practice, talked about how he
02:35got involved and had to, like, say something to Christian Gonzalez because those two were
02:41jawing at each other at the end of a play.
02:43Nothing's gotten to the point where they're, like, going to throw hands or anything physical
02:47is going to happen.
02:47I think that's pretty much where the line is.
02:50So anything up until that, I would continue to expect from these two.
02:55Meggo, is there, this conspiracy theory here, is there any belief that,
03:00Christian Gonzalez is showing that he can be extra physical this season when there was
03:06potential reports out there maybe about his physicality?
03:09So do you think he might be going a little bit more above to show, like, oh, I am not
03:15only a great lockdown corner, but I can be physical?
03:18I think he's just getting really excited over the challenge of A.J. Brown.
03:22And by excited, I mean, who knows what A.J. Brown is saying back to him.
03:25So I think it's something where it's building up over repeated reps that these guys are going
03:32against each other.
03:33I mean, Gonzalez is on A.J. Brown during team periods often.
03:37He's not the only one who's on him.
03:38But that's just got to be a tiring assignment to have.
03:42And he knows that he's in this contract negotiation right now.
03:46Like, who knows if he's waiting out Devin Witherspoon and if it hasn't gotten done because
03:51his side, what I most likely believe, is that they don't want it done yet because they want
03:56to get as much as they can.
03:57But at the same time, in the meantime, he's tasked with going up against one of the top
04:01receivers still in the entire league every day.
04:04So I'm sure that it's a certain amount of pressure overall on top of like, yeah, OK,
04:10so I'm supposed to be this guy who's a great runner and who can cover anybody.
04:14But I'll show you how physical I am.
04:16You agree with Breer or Reese or whoever said it that A.J. Brown has been the best offensive
04:22player at camp?
04:23And if so, what does that say about Drake May?
04:27You know, I think it's tricky.
04:29I would have said, if you talked to me at this time last week when pads had first come
04:34on, that it was without a doubt Drake May.
04:36But just coming off of yesterday's practice where they were doing a two-minute drill to
04:40end team periods and Drake threw back-to-back interceptions and the second one was really
04:46bizarre.
04:47It was to Hunter Henry, who he's obviously played with for years and has a good connection
04:52with.
04:52And it was just totally on a different page.
04:54And all-pro safety Kevin Byard just picked it off and then went over and was spanking
05:00the goalpost after because he was like so excited.
05:04I would have to agree that it's probably A.J.
05:08Brown, but we're still at this point in camp where it's like, OK, one guy has a great three
05:13days like Keyshawn Booty early in camp, and then somebody else has another great three
05:18days like Drake May did at the end of last week.
05:21Like, we'll see what happens when they get into joint practices, because that's where
05:24it really ramps up to another level.
05:26Meg, we were talking about earlier how before the Hall of Fame game, Maria Taylor was talking
05:30with Devin McCourty about Mike Vrabel, that whole situation, and what this team would look
05:34like after the off-field controversy of the off-season.
05:38Every video I've seen out of training camp, it seems like all of these guys haven't skipped
05:42a beat.
05:43Like, they are all on board with Mike Vrabel.
05:45Mike Vrabel seems to be the same guy that we saw at the end of last season.
05:48Now that you're there, do you feel the same way?
05:51Yeah, I honestly forget about it, guys.
05:53He's the same guy to us.

05:55Like, he's happy to be tough and a smartass right back to us in press availabilities and
06:03whatever.
06:04So, I don't want to say it's a non-story, because it was obviously a massive story in
06:09the spring, and we still haven't gotten the investigation findings released from The Athletic
06:16if they don't release those publicly when they're done.
06:18They're never going to release them.
06:20That's going to be buried.
06:21Well, if they don't release it publicly, they're going to, somebody's going to leak it.
06:24Like, someone's going to leak it.
06:26So, there'll be another kind of last gasp, I think, of that story then.
06:29But I honestly, I don't see it as a factor down here right now.

06:38exactly what the trash talking sounds like between A.J. Brown and Christian Gonzalez, because

06:51I think this was Shime's lead yesterday, and I piggybacked on the potential of trading
06:55for Kayvon Thibodeau.
06:56When you start to look at the receivers and basically how it's breaking down, who's in
07:01the slot, who could be potentially, is Kayshon Booty, is there an opportunity that he could
07:08still get traded for a guy like that, or are they using somebody in the slot that might
07:14have position flexibility?
07:16Wiggy, you're trying to mousetrap me right now into talking about ex-receivers again.

07:21And you gave me so much crap about this over the summer.
07:25I just want to know who they're utilizing in the slot, because in Josh's offense, that's
07:30a very, very focal position, and if they're not really using one of those wide receivers,
07:35does that guy become an option to trade for an edge guy like Thibodeau?
07:41So, talking to Kayshon Booty yesterday, he sounds like he is beyond at peace with getting
07:47traded.
07:48I'll say that.
07:49He sounds like he'll go where the money takes him, and he's in a contract year, so he's
07:56probably not going to make his money here.
07:58And I think that's the reality that is set in for him.
08:01So, I would be more surprised than not if he's still here by the time that the season starts
08:07at the end of training camp if they don't move on from him.
08:10I think the big question, Wiggy, is Pop has been getting tons of play.
08:15He always has a good camp, Pop Douglas, but I think that he has been getting tons of targets
08:20with Drake May and really filling out that slot role really well.
08:24I think right now, looking at that entire room, the other question mark is Kyle Williams.
08:29Kyle Williams was a pretty high draft pick last year, and he was a variable pick, so you'd
08:34think that they would have maybe a little bit more investment in him than they did somebody
08:38like Jalen Polk or Javon Baker when they cut those guys last year, but he hasn't gotten
08:44a ton of run with Drake May and the Ones, and if anybody is the odd man out right now,
08:49it's looking a little bit more like him.

09:44We've talked a lot about that.
09:46That's been one of my concerns, more so the edge than the interior line guys.
09:50Does anybody look like they could be that double-digit sack guy, or is that still an area where the
09:57Patriots should be willing to and explore a possible trade?
10:02I think it's the weakest part of the team right now.
10:05It's hard to judge this point in camp because, again, they haven't gotten into joint practices yet.
10:09It's not like these guys are going to, if they're doing what they're supposed to do,
10:14you know, totally rush and kill Drake May in practice.
10:18So, I look at the addition of Gabe Aukis over the last week.
10:23It looks like they're trying to get him up to speed as quickly as possible.
10:27And, again, at the risk of making myself sound to some kind of, like, way on this interview,
10:34he is built like a statue, like, he is chiseled.
10:38And so, he's what you want that defensive end to look like.
10:42But it's basically him, Draymond Jones.
10:45Who knows what's going on with Harold Landry?
10:47We haven't seen him at all.
10:48He's on the PUP list.
10:52So, anything that they could do to add there, I think, would still make sense at this point.
10:58Did Mike Vrabel end practice early yesterday after the interceptions,
11:02or was that just the way it was going?
11:06I think it was just the way it was going.
11:08He did the first interception from Drake.
11:11He did kind of try to reset it.
11:13And then there was the other interception, and then Tommy DeVito came in and threw an interception.
11:16And then I do think there was a sense of, like, you know what?
11:20The secondary was, guys, they were losing their minds so happy.
11:24And I think it was like, all right, you know what?
11:26Let's just go do these interviews.

11:42Will Campbell has been good up until yesterday where, guys, he had a brace on his arm
11:47and he wasn't participating in team periods.
11:50And I don't know how serious that is because it's not like he was sitting out of practice completely.
11:54But then the other part that I think Shine will love to hear is that the guy who went in
11:59in his spot at left tackle running with the ones in team periods was not Caleb Lomu.
12:04It was Marcus Bryant, who's the seventh-round pick from the last draft before this draft, who's the swing tackle,
12:11who barely sees any play with the ones ever.
12:14So Caleb Lomu, it doesn't look like he's poised, at least at this point in time, to jump in and
12:20take Will Campbell's spot right from him.
12:22Oh, that's interesting.
12:23So they went with the seventh-rounder from last year when Will was hurt rather than their first-round pick
12:30from this year.
