Mego talked with the guys about Patriots training camp and the scuffle between A.J. Brown and Christian Gonzalez during practice.

00:00Someone else worth waiting for, a truly one of the hardest working people at our station.
00:04Just, as a matter of fact, I saw a video that she just posted at the WEI Instagram page
00:11that I think she just put up like an hour and a half ago, so she came straight from Gillette.
00:16Down here is the great Meggo.
00:19We love, as a matter of fact, this is the first time she's been on since I've been here on
00:23the show,
00:23but Meggo, you are, did you just like go like 90 miles per hour the entire way here to get
00:28here in time?
00:29Oh, we're going to turn our mic on.
00:31Start out by turning on my mic.
00:32I will not comment on my illegal driving maneuvers, but I'm here now.
00:37Excellent, excellent.
00:38Well, Meggo, I hope you don't mind.
00:40We're going to jump in in a moment when Jalen comes on, and because you cover the Celtics,
00:44I would love to hear what you have to say about all this.
00:46But first of all, let's talk about Drake and the weird way that apparently practice ended today.
00:53Can you kind of tell us about how it wasn't such a great day for Ted's favorite quarterback?
00:57Yeah, it kind of feels like a do factor here, guys, because Drake, once the pads came on,
01:04he really looked almost perfect.
01:06Like, it was so outstanding, the practices that he was stacking together.
01:11And what happened today was they were running a two-minute drill at the very end of practice.
01:16It's the last team competitive portion.
01:19Super humid, gross day.
01:21Drake throws an interception, gets picked off by Marcus Jones, the undersized cornerback,
01:25and Vrabel blows the whistle, all right, all right, all right, we're going to reset.
01:29Let's reset that.
01:30Next play is even weirder.
01:32He looked like he was targeting the tight end Hunter Henry, but it was so completely on two different pages.
01:38Kevin Byard, the safety all-pro, jumps up, gets it, was so excited, he ran over to the uprights
01:45and was slapping his towel, spanking the uprights.
01:49And then Tommy DeVito comes out and throws a pick, too.
01:53So you get three straight picks.
01:56You guys, the secondary was losing their minds.
02:01Having a good time?
02:02Having a lot of fun?
02:02We just zip on over and talk to Kayshawn Booty, who's like, I don't know, basically, like,
02:07I don't know where I'm going to be.
02:09It's a very interesting practice today.
02:11Ted, do you remember that, when you guys would do practices and the defense would do something
02:16to embarrass, you know, Tom Brady and the other side?
02:19Like, you guys would peacock, right?
02:20Oh, excuse me?
02:21Dude, we had a bunch of peacockers.
02:23So they were, and that's defense, though.
02:25Defense is emotion.
02:26Defense is about getting excited.
02:28You've got to generate your own enthusiasm.
02:30So, yeah, and whenever you pick off Drake Bay, one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL in
02:36practice, it's a good feeling, man, and it gets everybody pumped up on defense.
02:40I always, I'm sorry, Beck, I was, to this whole, like, back and forth between the offense
02:47and the trash talking, I always kind of roll my eyes when I hear about teammates almost
02:52getting in a fight and having to be pulled apart.
02:54But apparently that happened today, according to reports, and you were there with A.J.
02:59Brown and Christian Gonzalez.
03:00Can you kind of take us into that?
03:02So this has been a battle that has been heating up since the pads came on between A.J.
03:08Brown and Christian Gonzalez.
03:09Even the other day when they were in the bubble, I was a little surprised because, first, they
03:15were running this one-on-one drill that they do often, and that was where Christian Gonzalez
03:20and A.J.
03:20Brown were kind of wrapped up on each other, and A.J.
03:22Brown walks away, takes off his left glove, and is shaking out the hand, and eventually
03:27has to get the thumb looked at by the medical staff, goes right back in, seems fine, tells
03:32NFL Network that he dislocated his thumb.
03:35I don't know.
03:36Like, Mike Rabel went on to say that happens to the line every day, so whatever.
03:41But those two, like, I'm surprised at how much they're jawing at each other because it's
03:46Christian Gonzalez.
03:48And the guy is one of the quieter athletes who we've ever spoken to, and especially as
03:53a cornerback.
03:54Like, he gets compared to Stephon Gilmore all the time, but Gilmore would say stuff.
03:59He just said it kind of, you know, in a murmuring tone, very quiet tone, but he would say stuff.
04:05Gonzalez, like, does not usually talk that much.
04:08And so it's been really interesting to see these guys don't know each other well.
04:12Pressure.
04:12Pressure does.
04:13I don't know.
04:13There's pressure in a contract negotiation, you know, maybe he's feeling a little.
04:16So you might see, that might be just some, like, indication of what he might be feeling
04:23about things off the field as well.
04:25I think it's an A.J. thing more.
04:26Because even today, when we were watching, they were doing a 2v2 drill in the end zone,
04:31and Craig Woodson got the best of A.J. Brown.
04:37And then A.J. had kind of toppled over going for a catch, and so Craig Woodson, you know,
04:41got the win and went to go give him a hand, and A.J. kind of was like, don't have
04:45time
04:45for this.
04:46Just walk off to the other side.
04:47I was like, okay, the young Craig Woodson, who I'm very high on, by the way.
04:52Yeah.
04:52You know what?
04:53Here's the thing.
04:53Sorry, go ahead.
04:54I was like, could we play booty talking about this exchange?
04:57He revealed a little bit what was said between A.J. and Gonzo.
05:00You were jumping in there on the sidelines.
05:02Was that just making, like, dinner reservations?
05:04No, I was just trying to pull A.J. out on to the next.
05:08I heard him say something about, you're a grown man, so I just let it go before it
05:13gets too far.
05:14So what does that mean?
05:15You're a grown man.
05:16A.J.'s telling Gonzo you're a grown man.
05:18Not sure.
05:19Not sure.
05:19Now, we also have Christian Gonzalez talking about the trash talking with A.J. Brown.
05:25The number one corner.
05:26I mean, that's how it's going to go.
05:28You know, it's football at the end of the day.
05:30You know, there's never no disrespect or anything.
05:33You know, we're just battling and getting each other better.
05:36He's going to face owners like that that are, you know, going to yap at him, going to try
05:41to get in his head, and I'm going to face receivers like that that are strong and come
05:44right back at me.
05:45So it's great work for the both of us.
05:48I like it.
05:49You need a little tension, man.
05:50You need a little bit of that in training camp, a little bit of edge, because pretty soon,
05:54you know, by, what, Tuesday next week, they'll be playing the Colts, and then preseason, and
05:59then the ones don't go against the ones, you know, pretty soon.
06:02So it's kind of fun to see the best of the best, you know, going against each other for
06:07at least a couple, three weeks into the, you know, into training camp.
06:10Beko, you brought up something where you're right.
06:12Christian isn't the kind of guy who you usually see jawing off like that, but do you think
06:16this might be overcompensation after this offseason?
06:19He got called out by some people in the media for being soft or not being physical enough.
06:26Do you think that maybe he's coming in with extra attitude because he knows what people
06:31are saying about him?
06:31I would be really surprised if that was a factor in this.
06:35I think he started, if you want to be critical of his physicality, that was something that
06:40seemed to be more of an emphasis between he and Mike Rabel at the end of last regular season
06:46going into the playoffs.
06:48There's not really a portion, in my opinion, of Christian Gonzalez's game that you can cast
06:53a whole lot of doubt on right now, and I think he's mostly shown that through camp.
06:57I really think that A.J. Brown just is bringing this level of intensity to a new team where
07:04he's talking to everybody.
07:05And if anybody's a little bit more vocal compared to the past, it's Drake May.
07:10Yeah.
07:10I think if anybody has been talked to about like, hey, maybe get your voice out there
07:15a little bit, it's the young quarterback.
07:17Before, I'd love to hit on the Drake May, but before we move on to Drake real quick,
07:20Mago, just going back to Christian, don't you feel like he's the kind of guy that needs
07:25like a high-profile matchup going against other teams?
07:30One, because I feel like there's times where he falls asleep when he's covering the receiver
07:35for the Bengals.
07:35I forget who he got beat on a nine route, where he just, I think he gets lazy because
07:41he's going up against someone he doesn't feel like is equal, and so he falls asleep.
07:47I think he likes going up against the better players, and that brings out the best of them.
07:52Yeah.
07:52I think you could look at JSN in the Super Bowl and say that that was clearly a case
07:57of that, getting up for the competition there.
08:01I don't know about like falling asleep on other assignments that he has.
08:05It's that kind of position where if he's not locking somebody down, then we're hearing
08:11his name for the wrong thing.
08:12Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
