00:00Diggs is going to turn 33 in November.
00:02But I think what I'm most encouraged by here is Adam Peters.
00:07And if you look back at last year,
00:12you had the whole Terry McLaurin contract saga
00:14that didn't really go well.
00:16Now, they did add Debo Samuel, right?
00:18And that's worth pointing out.
00:19Although Debo's more of like his own element
00:22than he is necessarily a true wide receiver.
00:24And I think they had Terry,
00:27who was dealing with the contract stuff.
00:28You did add Debo.
00:30But the rest of the receivers on that roster
00:31had question marks.
00:32Not to say they couldn't deliver,
00:34but they hadn't delivered.
00:36They hadn't consistently delivered.
00:37And so going into this season,
00:39getting into August,
00:40and looking at Terry McLaurin,
00:42clearly established star receiver,
00:44and then the rest of this group,
00:45you had question marks.
00:47And I think there's real reasons to be excited.
00:49I think Luke McCaffrey's had a hell of a week
00:51of training camp.
00:52I think Traylon Burks has all the tools needed.
00:55Burks has significant injury history.
00:57Luke has never done it consistently.
00:59Go further down the line.
01:00I like Antonio Williams a lot.
01:02He's a slippery player,
01:02but he's a third-round rookie.
01:04What are you going to get from him?
01:05And I think this football team,
01:07coming off a 5-12 season,
01:09the commanders need to win.
01:11And for me,
01:13undoubtedly,
01:14signing Steph Diggs
01:15helps this team win.
01:17Helps them win week one in Philadelphia.
01:19Helps them win across the season.
01:22And more so,
01:23if you get into another situation,
01:25and let's all hope this doesn't happen,
01:27but hope ain't a strategy, man.
01:29Like, of course,
01:30nobody wants injuries to your receiving core,
01:32but should they emerge,
01:34this just gives you more depth down the line.
01:38Terry McLaurin has never had as good of a receiver
01:41in the room with him as he does now with Diggs.
01:44Jaden Daniels has never had two options
01:46like McLaurin and Diggs.
01:48And I think this just pushes forward the commanders.
01:54And we can debate.
01:56I don't even know if there are really many debates.
01:59I'm going to open the phone lines up right away.
02:01800-636-1067.
02:03800-636-1067.
02:05B will be in here any minute.
02:06He had some charity work this morning.
02:09I just think I don't see a downside here
02:13I recognize,
02:15and perhaps this deserves to be part of the conversation
02:18that Diggs has had off-field stuff.
02:22Most recently, whatever it was with his chef,
02:24that was like thrown out of court immediately.
02:26And what sticks out to me is
02:28the NFL came out pretty damn quick
02:31and was like,
02:32there will be no punishment regarding this incident.
02:34That's the league giving teams a full green light
02:37to go get the player.
02:38And that to me is where my interest wanes.
02:43I think Diggs can play,
02:45and I think it helps this offense a ton.
02:47And I think you've got to give the front office credit
02:50for recognizing perhaps what went wrong last year
02:54and how they're going to try to fix it this year.
02:57And throughout the offseason,
02:59I thought Peters and Quinn were aggressive
03:01in trying to fix things,
03:04especially on the defensive side of the ball.
03:06They spent a lot of money on the D-line.
03:07And they used their first-round pick,
03:10number seven overall,
03:11to draft linebacker Sonny Stiles.
03:13They added to the defensive backfield.
03:17And offensively,
03:20they added Rashad White.
03:21They added Chigakonkwo.
03:23But there wasn't a lot done.
03:25You did draft a receiver in the third round.
03:28But like,
03:29you did have this remaining question mark
03:32at receiver of,
03:33the question is,
03:34who can you trust besides Terry?
03:36Not that you can't be excited about guys,
03:39because I think there have been guys
03:41showing well in training camp.
03:43But who can you trust?
03:44And I don't think there was really an answer to that
03:46after Terry McLaurin.
03:47And I think we saw last year
03:49the receiver room struggled,
03:51and you've got to make it stronger.
03:54And I think this undoubtedly
03:56makes the receiving room stronger.
03:58If you look at Steph Diggs,
04:01he's played 11 years in the NFL.
04:03Fifth round pick back in 2015
04:05by the Vikings
04:06out of the University of Maryland.
04:08Outside of an injured season
04:11in 2024 in Houston,
04:12where he went down with a knee
04:15week nine, I believe,
04:17he's gone for at least
04:19700 yards every season.
04:21And from 2018 to 2023,
04:24it was over 1,000 every year,
04:26and then last year,
04:27back over 1,000 yards.
04:29Von Miller famously said,
04:30I could roll out of bed
04:32and rush the passer.
04:33I think Steph Diggs could roll out of bed
04:35and get you 800 yards.
04:37And if Washington can have
04:38that sort of secondary receiver production,
04:42I'd like this offense way more.
04:43And that's not to say
04:44Steph can't maybe give you more.
04:46I think we're kind of putting a cap
04:48on what we think he is,
04:50and I'm not sure we should.
04:52This could be a lot more
04:53than people are expecting.
04:54But I think there's a baseline
04:56of what this will be
04:57that is significant
04:59and is a significant boost
05:01to the offense.
05:03Phone lines are lighting up already.
05:05We're going to start with B in Northeast.
05:08What's up, B?
05:09What do you think of the Diggs signing?
05:10What's up?
05:12Hey, man, listen.
05:13I'm standing in now.
05:15Jay Daniels is healthy
05:17for the full season.
05:18Go ahead, give him the trophy now.
05:20We're going to call him
05:21the comeback player of the year.
05:22Just because of how much
05:24Stephon Diggs is going to compliment
05:26this pro-style West Coast offense.
05:30Him and Terry opposite of each other
05:32are going to be crazy.
05:34I know you still got Luke.
05:35I heard he's having
05:36a hell of an offseason.
05:38They say Antonio Williams
05:39looks real promising.
05:40But it's one person.
05:42I'm not hearing y'all say his name.
05:44I'm not understanding why.
05:45But you cannot forget De'Ami Brown.
05:48Him and Jay Daniels
05:50already have a hell of a chemistry.
05:51De'Ami Brown was the main target
05:54when we went to the NFC Championship
05:55two years ago.
05:57I feel like this team
05:59with Jay Daniels
06:00and a new scheme
06:01and a new program
06:03under Blyle
06:04is going to be crazy.
06:05But Stephon Diggs
06:07is what you would call
06:08a professional wide receiver
06:10opposite of Terry McClellan.
06:12The man has 11 years
06:13of NFL experience.
06:15No shaky seasons.
06:16Even last year,
06:17I don't care what nobody say.
06:19Without Stephon Diggs,
06:21to me,
06:22the Patriots don't go
06:22to the Super Bowl.
06:24They just don't go.
06:25On top of them being
06:28in this style of offense,
06:30man,
06:30with Stephon and Terry,
06:32I feel like
06:33Chegg,
06:33a conqueror,
06:35can also
06:35be a great attribute,
06:37man.
06:38And listen,
06:39the sky's the limit
06:40for number five now,
06:41man.
06:42You give him
06:42two hell of a receivers
06:44with a big
06:46helping offense,
06:47man,
06:47and if he stays healthy,
06:50listen,
06:50I don't know what can happen.
06:51Only God knows.
06:52Great call, B.
06:53He looks really good.
06:54B, I think it's safe
06:55to say you're excited.
06:58Damn I.
06:59I'm here.
07:00I'm ready.
07:00I'm ready for week one.
07:01Appreciate it, man.
07:02Thank you very much.
07:03That is B from Northeast.
07:05The sky is the limit.
07:06And I do agree,
07:07like,
07:08the one,
07:09one,
07:11not criticism,
07:12one question mark
07:14if you want to raise
07:15is,
07:16what does it do
07:17for everybody else
07:18now that you have digs?
07:19And I think the reality is
07:22it should get everybody else
07:24more open.
07:25And if you watch,
07:26like I've watched
07:27every practice so far
07:28and I've watched
07:29minicamp and OTAs.
07:30This offense,
07:31we got to get
07:33out of our brain
07:34Kingsbury's offense.
07:36Where if you had digs,
07:37it just would have been
07:38Steph on one side
07:39and digs on the other
07:40and probably Antonio Williams
07:41in the slot.
07:42Like,
07:42that's not what this
07:43is going to look like.
07:44There's going to be
07:45so much more motion
07:46and movement
07:46and guys lining up
07:47all over the field.
07:49And I wonder too,
07:51if digs only played
07:52about 55% of the snaps
07:53last year in New England,
07:55he was coming back
07:56from the knee injury.
07:57Now he's that much
07:57further removed,
07:58that much,
07:58that much healthier,
07:59right?
08:00Maybe those,
08:01the snap count
08:02gets up to 60,
08:0365,
08:04but there's going to be
08:05snaps for these
08:05other guys.
08:06There's going to be
08:07development opportunities
08:08for these other guys.
08:10I'm going to keep
08:10the phone lines going here.
08:11My guy Rusty
08:12is in Delaware.
08:14Rusty,
08:14what's up,
08:14man?
08:16Hey,
08:16good morning,
08:17Jay.
08:17You know,
08:18man,
08:18I've been calling in here
08:19for the last few months
08:20and just saying,
08:21let's bring Steph home.
08:22Let's bring Steph home.
08:23I'm super gassed up
08:24about this.
08:25I've been thinking
08:26ever since the signing,
08:27like,
08:28how are they going to
08:29cover both him and Terry?
08:30I mean,
08:30it's going to be
08:31real unique to see
08:32what teams can do
08:33to try to take
08:33that threat away
08:34and then who's that
08:35going to leave open
08:36if they figure out
08:37how to take that
08:37threat away.
08:38And as far as what it
08:39does to everybody else,
08:41I mean,
08:41yeah,
08:41of course,
08:42it slides guys down
08:43the depth chart
08:44and,
08:44you know,
08:44I think,
08:45what are we,
08:46eight or nine receivers
08:47now?
08:47No,
08:47we're not going to
08:48keep eight or nine
08:48receivers.
08:49So that's what those
08:50guys get paid to figure
08:51out.
08:52But one thing that I
08:53believe that it does
08:54is it makes the
08:54Washington Commanders
08:56a better football team
08:57and that's what I'm
08:58here for.
08:58And Jay,
08:59if I could real quick,
09:00today's Jackson's
09:0111th birthday.
09:02Want to give him a
09:02shout out?
09:03Happy birthday, bud.
09:04Yeah,
09:04he's the,
09:05he's the,
09:06he's seen more
09:07Commanders games
09:07than any 10-year-old
09:08and now he'll see
09:09more than any 11-year-old.
09:10Love that, man.
09:11Happy birthday to that
09:12boy.
09:12You guys take care.
09:15Yes,
09:15it's going to slide
09:16guys down the depth
09:17chart.
09:17That's a byproduct
09:18of playing good
09:19competitive football
09:20and putting together
09:21the best roster
09:22you can.
09:23Is anybody worried?
09:25I'm not necessarily
09:26comparing these players,
09:27but are,
09:28are any Rams fans
09:29worried about who's
09:31going to get slid
09:31down the depth chart
09:32when Aaron Donald
09:33comes back?
09:34No,
09:34because you're trying
09:35to win games.
09:36And,
09:36and I think
09:37the undeniable
09:38part of this is
09:39Steph Diggs
09:40joining Washington
09:41makes them a more
09:42dangerous opponent
09:43week one in
09:44Philadelphia.
09:45You want to talk
09:45about Quinion Mitchell
09:46and Cooper Dejean?
09:48Add Steph Diggs
09:50to Terry McLaurin
09:51and Chica Conquo
09:51and Rashad White
09:52and Antonio Williams
09:54and Luke McCaffrey,
09:55whatever that
09:55combination is,
09:56right?
09:57And,
09:57and I think
09:58you want to give
09:59your star young
10:00quarterback as many
10:01weapons as you can.
10:02I think this is
10:03adding a weapon.
10:04Let's go to my guy
10:06Dominic in Chicago,
10:08probably listening
10:08on the Odyssey app.
10:09What's up,
10:09Dom?
10:11Hey,
10:11you know,
10:11I'm listening to Odyssey.
10:13JP,
10:13I didn't like it
10:14at first
10:15until the way
10:16you broke it down,
10:17his accolades,
10:17what he achieved
10:18over the years.
10:19And I was happy
10:20with the receiver
10:21run we had.
10:22I loved it,
10:23right?
10:23But now that we got it
10:24and the way you
10:25explained it,
10:26I love it because
10:26I know you and Brian
10:27are not going to
10:28scare me wrong.
10:29You know,
10:30your insight,
10:30your knowledge
10:31of the game,
10:32I love the decision.
10:33And I think that
10:34will only make
10:35the other receivers
10:36better.
10:37They're going to
10:37work harder,
10:38you know,
10:38still shopping still.
10:39It's going to make
10:40them more talented,
10:42more hungry.
10:43So I love it.
10:44Appreciate you,
10:45bud.
10:45Good call,
10:46man.
10:46All right.
10:47Yeah.
10:48Listen,
10:48I'm not,
10:49my role is not
10:50to tell anybody
10:51how to feel about
10:52this.
10:52If you have a
10:52negative reaction
10:53to it,
10:54that's your
10:54prerogative.
10:55I just,
10:56I don't see that.
10:58I don't see that
11:00outlook.
11:01You know,
11:02somebody that knows
11:02Diggs incredibly well
11:03is Mike Loxley,
11:04the head coach
11:05of the University
11:06of Maryland.
11:07Lox is going to
11:07join us in about
11:08an hour.
11:09I don't know
11:09if everybody saw
11:10it,
11:10but Steph Diggs
11:11was in College
11:13Park yesterday.
11:14They posted a video
11:15of him at the very
11:16end.
11:16He said,
11:17go commanders,
11:17which was pretty
11:18cool.
11:18I also,
11:20I love Diggs'
11:21approach to all
11:22of this.
11:23He's just been
11:24quiet,
11:25going about his
11:25work,
11:26working out like
11:27crazy.
11:27I know Steph's
11:29longtime trainer,
11:29Myron Flowers,
11:30and he's told me
11:31that the speed is
11:32actually up from
11:33where it was.
11:34And I think
11:35we all have this
11:36impression that Diggs
11:37is going to come in
11:38and be kind of the
11:39possession guy,
11:40red zone,
11:40third downs.
11:41That could very
11:43much be the case.
11:44But I think it'd be
11:45naive to suggest
11:46that it's impossible
11:47he is more than
11:48that,
11:49that he can get
11:50vertical again.
11:51Because if you have
11:53Terry on one side,
11:55like I think Steph
11:56Diggs last year in
11:57New England kind of
11:58did what had to be
11:58done.
11:59And that Patriots
12:00passing game wasn't
12:02explosive.
12:03They ran the ball
12:04well,
12:05they threw the ball
12:05to the tight end a lot.
12:07Look this up for me,
12:08White Bryant.
12:09Didn't Drake May not
12:10have a 300-yard
12:11passing game
12:12until like week 14
12:13or something?
12:14They were winning
12:15games and they were
12:15very good and they
12:16had their formula
12:17and Diggs was a part
12:18of that.
12:19But I think the notion
12:21to automatically assume
12:23that any sort of
12:24verticality,
12:25especially in an
12:26offense that ideally
12:27is running good
12:27play action,
12:29like you know how
12:29good Steph Diggs is
12:31on a long crosser?
12:33Like a lot of
12:36people think of
12:36those shallow
12:37crosses.
12:37You could also run
12:38those deep and if
12:39you have a deep
12:39track going one way
12:40and then a tight end
12:41that sits down inside,
12:42like there are a lot
12:44of options.
12:46I can't hear you.
12:49Week 16 was the
12:50first 300-yard
12:51pass.
12:51Right,
12:52like New England
12:53was really good and
12:54Drake May was really
12:54good.
12:55I'm not taking
12:55anything away,
12:56but that was not
12:56an explosive passing
12:58attack.
13:00So I just,
13:01I don't think we
13:02have to apply limits
13:03to what this does
13:04to the offense,
13:05but we also should
13:06be reasonable,
13:08right?
13:08Like this is a dude
13:09that's turning 33 in
13:10November.
13:10I just,
13:11the automatic notion
13:13that it's like,
13:13oh,
13:13okay,
13:14you know,
13:15he's just going to
13:15catch the quick
13:17outs third and four,
13:18he gets you six.
13:19That's great.
13:20You want that.
13:21He might be able to
13:22do other stuff too.
13:23We're going to keep
13:23the phone lines up
13:24for a while.
13:25So you want to call
13:25in,
13:26hit us up
13:26800-636-1067,
13:28800-636-1067.
13:31And Joe is in
13:32Manassas.
13:33What's up,
13:34Joe?
13:34Well,
13:35what's up,
13:35Jake?
13:35You love the show,
13:36man.
13:36I just wanted to say,
13:38do you feel like this
13:39is like,
13:40I make the team better.
13:41I agree with you.
13:42I love it for this
13:43season,
13:43but do you think it's
13:45more of an indictment
13:45like,
13:46you know,
13:46just kicking the can
13:47down the road for
13:48Peters?
13:48Like,
13:49don't you agree that
13:50like chemistry,
13:51building a young
13:51receiver with a young
13:53quarterback going
13:54forward,
13:54instead of just
13:55picking up this
13:56one-year rental,
13:57like,
13:57I understand it helps
13:58us now.
13:59Hang on,
13:59hang on,
13:59hang on.
14:00Let's talk through
14:00this,
14:01okay?
14:02Yeah,
14:02let's do it.
14:03You're saying this is
14:04an indictment because
14:05you're just picking up
14:05a one-year veteran
14:06rental,
14:07right?
14:08Yeah,
14:09and more of an
14:09indictment on Peters
14:10on his draft process
14:11and some of the guys
14:12that he's drafted
14:13before.
14:14I think,
14:15like,
14:15if one of those
14:16guys hits,
14:18all of this changes.
14:19If Antonio Williams
14:20shows he's a really
14:21good player,
14:22all of it changes.
14:23I hear what you're
14:24saying,
14:24especially,
14:25like,
14:25depending how far
14:26down you want to
14:26play this,
14:27that McLaurin doesn't
14:27have guaranteed money
14:28next year,
14:28and do we have to do
14:29that same dance?
14:29I don't think
14:30you necessarily...
14:32I think those two
14:32guys are going to
14:33be gone.
14:34You know what I
14:34mean?
14:34Like,
14:34I really feel like
14:35McLaurin digs,
14:36this is for this
14:37year,
14:37right?
14:38So,
14:38like,
14:38if we're going to
14:39this year,
14:40we're happy with
14:40that,
14:41we're cool with
14:41that.
14:42But that being
14:42said,
14:43like,
14:43some of these
14:43other guys
14:44stepping up,
14:45is Peter just
14:46saying,
14:46hey,
14:46they're not ready
14:47for the action?
14:48They're not ready
14:48to step up?
14:49They're not ready
14:50to be consistent?
14:51I hear your
14:52point,
14:52and I'm not
14:53going to fight
14:53your point,
14:54but I also think,
14:56like,
14:56August 6th is not,
14:58August 6th with
14:59week one,
14:59I don't know,
15:0035 days out,
15:01something like that,
15:03is not the time to
15:04discuss the long-term
15:05roster build?
15:06You have a valid
15:07point.
15:08I just think those
15:09are questions for
15:10March and April.
15:12Yeah.
15:12I just feel like
15:13there's some
15:14receivers,
15:15like McCaffrey,
15:16and some of these
15:16guys have been
15:17around a couple
15:18seasons.
15:18Like,
15:19if you're not
15:19seeing the,
15:20you know...
15:22Here's where I'll
15:22disagree with you.
15:24Okay.
15:25NFL teams want
15:26to put the best
15:27possible team on
15:28the field,
15:29right?
15:29Last year,
15:30they wanted to go
15:31with their guys.
15:32This year,
15:33I think they are
15:34recognizing there's
15:35a really good player
15:36that's available,
15:36let's bring him in.
15:38And it has nothing
15:38to do with next
15:39year,
15:39it has nothing to
15:40do with not liking
15:41the guys we've
15:42drafted,
15:42it's about winning
15:43right now.
15:44And I'm okay with
15:45that.
15:45Because I don't
15:46think Diggs'
15:48arrival impacts
15:50Antonio Williams'
15:51ability to evolve
15:52into a good
15:53player.
15:55Pro football is
15:56about...
15:57If somebody's
15:58scared of the
15:59competition that
16:00Steph Diggs'
16:00arrival brings,
16:01they're in the
16:01wrong line of
16:02work.
16:03Agreed.
16:04Agreed.
16:04And that's going
16:05to show you more
16:05about the guys that
16:06we do have on the
16:07roster anyway.
16:08But yes.
16:08But that being
16:09said, I just think
16:10that we're just
16:10kicking the can down
16:11the road.
16:12I want to be
16:13competitive this
16:13year, but also
16:14don't you want to
16:15build for the
16:15future?
16:17They would argue
16:18they're trying to.
16:19Like, for all the
16:20talk of the
16:21receiver position,
16:22they've drafted a
16:22receiver in each of
16:23the last three
16:23seasons.
16:24Two of them in the
16:25third round, one of
16:25them in the fourth.
16:26So they have tried
16:27to add, they would
16:29argue, Terry
16:30McLaurin's under
16:30contract for next
16:31year.
16:31Terry may see it
16:32differently when we
16:33get to next year.
16:34Now, I know I
16:34violated my own rule
16:35earlier in the week
16:36screaming about the
16:37learners not spending.
16:38I think worrying
16:39about the receiver
16:40position in 2027 and
16:42beyond, while
16:43warranted, is just
16:44getting pretty mad.
16:46And I think on the
16:46day, the morning
16:47after they signed
16:48Steph Diggs, I don't
16:49think it's necessary,
16:50but everyone's
16:51entitled to their
16:52own viewpoint.
16:52I'm not knocking you
16:53for it, Joe.
16:55We got a busy show.
16:56It is going to be a
16:57fun one.
16:57Steph Diggs wearing
16:58the burgundy and
16:59gold.
17:00Presumably we get to
17:00see him.
17:01We get to hear from
17:01him tomorrow.
17:03Hit us up.
17:04It's B. Mitch and
17:04Finley.
