An Okapi is one of the world’s most unique mammals, often called the “forest giraffe” because it is the giraffe’s closest living relative. Found only in the dense rainforests of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, okapis are famous for their reddish-brown bodies and striking black-and-white striped legs that resemble those of a zebra.
Despite their zebra-like appearance, okapis are shy, solitary animals that use their long, flexible tongues to strip leaves, buds, fruits, and fungi from forest plants. Their large ears provide excellent hearing, helping them detect predators in the dense rainforest.
