A married couple pleaded not guilty at the Ayer Keroh Sessions Court on Monday (Aug 3) to separate charges of physically abusing their nine-year-old daughter at their home in Melaka Tengah.

The 36-year-old lorry driver was charged with physically abusing the child on July 19, while his 35-year-old wife was charged over a similar alleged incident on July 21.

00:22The father was charged with physically abusing the child on July 19, while the mother faces a similar charge over

00:32It is understood that the victim was caned after causing her six-year-old younger brother to cry, as well
00:38as for not tidying up her bedroom.
00:41The incident left the victim with swelling, bruising and welts on her body, as well as trauma.
00:46Both accused were charged under Section 31, Subsection 1 of the Child Act 2001, which carries a maximum penalty of
00:5620 years' imprisonment, a fine of up to 50,000 ringgit, or both upon conviction.
01:03Judge Rohatul Akma granted bail of 10,000 ringgit to the father and 9,000 ringgit to the mother.
01:10The court also ordered both accused to report to a police station once a month and prohibited them from contacting
01:17or interfering with the victim and prosecution witnesses.
01:21The case has been fixed for mention on September 8.
