00:00Today, being the 2nd of August, we want to tell you that it is a World Breastfeeding Week
00:05when we observe and actually highlight the importance of breastfeeding.
00:10So, for a mother who's breastfeeding, several things they need to contemplate.
00:15For example, the benefits and also the risk of breastfeeding.
00:19And also, one interesting thing is that does it act as a form of contraception?
00:31For a young mother, perhaps first time mother, and contemplating breastfeeding,
00:37what are the pros that you can think about?
00:40The actual breast milk itself is always described as the golden liquid.
00:45Why is that the case? Because apart from nutrients that it's providing,
00:49it also helps to provide a lot of immunity.
00:52And that itself is definitely not obtainable by the actual formulary.
00:57So, babies who are brought up with breastfeeding milk
01:02actually are a lot less likely to have diabetes
01:05because of less carbohydrate as compared to formula milk
01:10and also less likely to have childhood obesity.
01:13In addition to that, there's less allergy as well,
01:17which is noted and actually the child is a lot stronger.
01:20And some even stretch to say that they might be smarter.
01:25And that itself is difficult to prove because it is simply impossible
01:31to rule out the ones who are with or without breast milk
01:35whether their IQ is stronger or higher.
01:38However, it definitely will have a positive impact.
01:42The second thing that one has to think about is maternal side.
01:45For the maternal side, one really needs to think about
01:49the possibility of losing weight faster.
01:52It's because by breastfeeding, the women themselves
01:55will actually have better contractions of their uterus
01:58and that itself will expel the actual residual fluid
02:02and also residual problems that they may have during the pregnancy
02:06and then help to lose weight quite a lot.
02:09And of course, when you are breastfeeding, you're burning off a lot, lot more calories
02:14and that will help you to get back in shape very quickly.
02:18But one thing that we need to contemplate is that with that hormone
02:22and the suckling effects of the breast milk,
02:24then it's a condition called lactational amenorrhea method.
02:29That is a time when women probably think that they will have absolutely no need
02:34to contemplate their contraception.
02:37Is that really, really good enough for pregnancy prevention?
02:43In fact, it's as good as 98%.
02:46Why is that the case?
02:47Even though when somebody is not having menses,
02:50they may not be not having ovulation.
02:53So when you're having ovulation with minimal menses,
02:57you might actually have a false assurance that you are already in the safe period
03:02and before you know it, while you're still breastfeeding,
03:04you might end up getting pregnant again.
03:06So therefore, for women who really, really are worried about this,
03:10they might think about oral contraceptive pills or if they are really worried,
03:15they might actually think about intrauterine devices in order to prevent any pregnancy.
03:20For the following week, we are going ahead with the theme of breastfeeding week.
03:25The World Breastfeeding Week obviously highlighted the important things of the benefits of the gold liquid,
03:31how it protects the child and the mother.
03:33However, what sort of sexual impact will it have on women?
03:37You need to stay tuned for next week's Putting Dr. G on the Spot.
