00:01This allegation from eSafety, the eSafety Commissioner, as you said, is against messaging
00:07platform Telegram and the authority is accusing Telegram or the watchdog is accusing Telegram
00:15of failing to meet its legal obligations and that is around failing to detect, deter and
00:22disrupt pro-terror material from being on the website and they said that is in some
00:28cases months after users had complained about the material.
00:32Now the eSafety Commissioner, Julie Inman Grant, detailed some of the content that was on the
00:39website during a press conference earlier today, take a listen.
00:42This case concerns content linked to some of the most notorious acts of known extremist
00:48violence in recent history, including depicting the Christchurch and Buffalo attacks, as well
00:54as ISIS beheadings and executions and other horrific material used for propaganda and for radicalisation.
01:02We allege that this content remained publicly accessible on the service long after Telegram
01:08had been put on notice by user reports.
01:12Now, she said it was a year-long investigation that has led to the beginning of these Federal
01:17Court proceedings and if indeed Telegram has been found to fail to meet its legal obligations,
01:24it could be facing penalties upward of $50 million.
01:28Now the ABC has tried to contact Telegram about this Federal Court action today and we haven't
01:33received a response yet, Lorna.
