Do Costa's hopes for the Tigers make him a bad fan?
Transcript
00:00All right. It feels like it's changing by the day. The insiders can't figure this out, but the Tigers won
00:04last night. They had lost the night before. That was three in a row, and it felt like, well, they've
00:10seen everything they need to see. It feels like there is an indecision, at least from the outside. Jeff Passan,
00:17ESPN. What's going on with the Tigers?
01:07They want to, but can they? That's a bizarre way to phrase it. The comment, they need to make a
01:13decision. That says they haven't, and they're throwing Scoobl today, which supports the idea that they haven't fully decided what
01:19they're doing.
01:21I want to put my fandom on trial here for a second, and you let me know if I'm being
01:25a bad fan, but they're kind of messing with my head because my preference is sell Scoobl and sneak in
01:31the playoffs.
01:32But if they are truly going to let the next few games decide whether they keep Tarek Scoobl, don't say
01:37it. I'm going to root against them. You're a bad fan. I'll stand in judgment. You can call in. We
01:43could do a jury of my peers. 248-539-9797. I want what's best for this team, and I want
01:49them to make the playoffs.
01:50I just don't want them to keep Scoobl and fizzle out or keep Scoobl and miss entirely, which is very
01:55much on the table. I don't want them to let five games decide the future of this franchise.
02:00So my response is my fandom and how I see when anytime you take the field, the goal is to
02:10win the game. Be damned. Any consequences of it, it's never wrong to win games.
02:15I understand your perspective, though, and you did a great job of laying it out in regards to if it
02:22comes down to the final four games that they're playing.
02:25To me, that is maybe the dumbest reason why you would actually say, no, we're going to go for it.
02:33It's just if it's going to if what you're doing with Tarek Scoobl and the future of this franchise is
02:40hinges on four games.
02:44Let's not pay attention to the first 106, 109 games, however many they played.
02:49Let's just focus on these four games. Maybe we get hot. Maybe we go on a now a five game
02:55winning streak like that decides what you're going to do with your number one asset.
03:00Like that's asinine.
03:04Say it out loud. I did.
03:06Javi Baez is here, so now we have to consider all options.
03:10Eduardo Valencia hit two home runs last night.
03:13Right. So stop the presses.
03:15We are unsure what we're going to do.
03:18I mean, to the point of even today's exercise, we're going to pitch Tarek Scoobl.
03:24Only bad things can happen.
03:26We're going to pitch Tarek Scoobl.
03:29Okay, so I'll go back to my fandom in regards to what gives them the best chance to win today.
03:34Tarek Scoobl pitching.
03:35So you want to pitch him to win?
03:37No, I think they should hold him out.
03:38That's where I can use my brain and say, you know what?
03:42If we don't trade him, then we can use him in game one or you could stay on schedule with
03:48game two of that Seattle series.
03:51But if there is any hope or if there are any deals in the works, then no, I don't pitch
03:57him today.
03:57Because while it may end up coming down to one game at the end of the season, there are a
04:04lot of games where you could point to not just not starting him against Baltimore leading up to the trade
04:11deadline as the reason why you don't make the postseason.
04:13And again, I want to be clear.
04:14We don't actually know what Scott Harris is thinking, but we're going off of what other people are saying.
04:19If he's truly indecisive right now and look, that might be the reality.
04:24Scoobl's pitching today.
04:26I don't know.
04:27I'm disappointed.
04:29I'm disappointed that they aren't standing up for themselves.
04:31Like Tarek Scoobl wants to pitch today because he, in part, has a milestone and it should matter to him
04:37to get a thousand strikeouts.
04:38It's personally important to him.
04:40But when do the Tigers do what's best for themselves?
04:43When do they say, we got to run our business?
04:46You've run this the way you want, Scoobl.
04:48You want it on your terms.
04:50You're not going to sign an extension.
04:51You want us to add.
04:52You want to win a World Series here.
04:55We have to do what's right for us.
04:56We got a bad bullpen.
04:58Our offense is in the bottom 10 in baseball.
05:00We got to do what's right for us.
05:02When does an adult in the room step up and say, I got to make an adult decision?
05:07Like, it feels childish to say, I don't want to trade Scoobl.
05:12I know we need to, but I don't want to.
05:14Can I?
05:15I don't want to.
05:16It feels like you're acting in denial about what's happening.
05:19There's only one that can stand up and actually trade him, and that's Scott Harris.
05:22I'm sure there are other individuals in that room saying, like, we have this debate.
05:26Sometimes I'm on one side.
05:27Sometimes you're on the other.
05:28I'm sure that there's somebody that is preaching to him, you have to trade Tarek Scoobl.
05:35So, an adult in the room may be standing up.
05:37The only one that has to do it is Scott Harris.
05:39I guess I hope Scott is the adult at the end of the day.
05:41He has to be.
05:42Let's go to Bill.
05:43Am I a bad fan?
05:45You're on 97.1.
05:47No, Jim.
05:48Morning, guys.
05:49Morning.
05:49Heather.
05:50I just wanted a few points, if you'll allow me.
05:53I hate to say I agree with Jim, but more importantly, the fact that you're allowing four games,
05:58you should have a decision already made what you're doing by now.
06:01If you're any kind of president, general manager, whatever his title is.
06:04And also, I don't know if I trust him to make the right move, because you saw how he botched
06:09Eduardo Rodriguez's deal.
06:11He's never really made, as are other GMs also.
06:14They're afraid to go all in or make a big move.
06:16So, I'm hoping he does the right thing.
06:18But at the same time, I'd also like to, I don't know, we need a bullpen.
06:23It's like two or three pieces at the most.
06:25If you want to make a run for it, which I still think they're able to, because I have
06:30to say, Troy Melton right now is our best pitcher.
06:32Yeah.
06:33He's been real good.
06:35Really good.
06:36Yeah, Melton and Montero.
06:37A couple young arms you're going to have for years to come.
06:39They can be the nucleus here.
06:41Yeah.
06:41And Jobe is another guy I don't want people to forget about, because we're going to see
06:44him before the year's done.
06:46The problem with Jobe, too, is Boris is his agent.
06:51Is he really?
06:51Of course he is.
06:53You know, I wish they wouldn't draft anyone that's represented by this guy in the future.
06:57I don't know how it all works.
06:58But he's easier said than done.
07:00He reps the game's best players.
07:01You want the best players.
07:02You're going to have to deal with him.
07:03I would love to have the argument of, what do we do with Jackson Jobe?
07:09Like, we had two years of the best pitcher in baseball.
07:13Now, ultimately, he's going to go away.
07:16But I would, again, love to have that argument of, what are we doing with the best pitcher in
07:21baseball?
07:21I don't care who his agent is.
07:24Let's get to Jordan in Grand Blank.
07:26Jordan, good morning.
07:28Hey, how are you guys doing this morning?
07:29Good.
07:31Good.
07:32Yeah, I mean, here's my thing.
07:34You bring up the next four to five games, kind of determining what we're going to do.
07:38Can Scoble help us win the next four to five games?
07:42No, he can help you win one.
07:43Right.
07:44One, right.
07:45But you could trade him to get guys to win the next four or five games and so on.
07:52And then my other point being, too, is like, are we going to sign him in the offseason or
07:56at the end of this year?
07:58Unlikely.
08:00Probably not.
08:01But then how is he even a question?
08:03Why let him walk away for nothing when you can go get pieces to help you further on this
08:09year and in the years to come?
08:11That's what I was going to say, Jordan.
08:12It's not four or five games.
08:14It's four or five years with the type of stuff we're talking about.
08:17If he's the number one arm on the market in a market without a lot of high end starting
08:21pitching, without a lot of sellers, period, they got a losing record.
08:26They've been a bad team.
08:30But hey, if Scoble wins today, they'll win another series.
08:33And if that's going to justify keeping him, then it messes with my brain as a fan.
08:38It like puts me in the upside down.
08:41But I'm like, at this point, lose the game so that I can see them actually make the right
08:44decision.
08:45Then they need to flip the switch.
08:47If that's the case, then who are you acquiring, acquiring before the deadline?
