00:02Over a thousand employees from leading AI companies signed a petition on Tuesday urging the US
00:08government to deliberately pace the development of artificial intelligence. Among the signatories
00:14were the Anthropic CEO, OpenAI's head of research, DeepMind's strategic lead and MetaAI's chief
00:21scientist. The petition warns there is a real risk that AI rapidly accelerates beyond our
00:27understanding and control. The call comes in response to a recent incident after Frontier
00:33AI models carried an autonomous cyber attack. They escaped the controlled sandbox environment
00:39where the test was supposed to be carried out and broke into the servers of code-sharing
00:43platform Hugging Face. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, who did not sign the petition, said in an interview
00:50that AI developers may need to voluntarily slow its development to give society time to adapt.
00:57It was not the first time an AI model had operated beyond the control of its developers, but
01:02the latest incident was widely viewed as particularly alarming.
