00:01Life after death and the existence of spirits are key themes in the new exhibition at the
00:08Finnish National Gallery. Arcana Borealis, Northern Women and Esotericism explores how
00:14female artists from across the Nordic region and Sapmi have engaged with occultism, spirituality and magic.
00:36The exhibition is unusually large and it brings together almost 50 artists from all the Nordic
00:45countries and including Sapmi and it has works in many different techniques, many different
00:54materials and the timescale ranges from the late 19th century until today. So we also explore this
01:04phenomenon through contemporary art.
01:20The atmosphere around the theme of Halloween seems perfect to visit it in autumn.
01:29Esotericism is both about lightness, light and darkness so
01:34So we can explore themes such as death for example in art through this esoteric theme and
01:48sometimes the hidden knowledge, the secret knowledge that that esotericism is all about
01:54can be found through exploring darkness rather than light.
02:07The exhibition at Ateneum Art Museum, Finnish National Gallery, will be open until the 28th of February,
02:14the 20th of February, 2027.
