00:00Colonel Felder asks Early Jury Probe, the Atlanta Constitution, Saturday, June 14, 1913.
00:06Requests. Investigation of the Gentry affidavit as Collier is not in Atlanta.
00:11Now Colonel Thomas B. Felder yesterday requested that the Grand Jury make an early investigation
00:16of the affidavit submitted by George Gentry, in which he declared that the dictograph records
00:21were padded. On Friday afternoon, he forwarded a letter to L. H. Beck, foreman of the jury,
00:27in which he asked that body to look into the matter as early as possible. Offering to appear
00:32before the jury at any time, Colonel Felder assured Mr. Beck that he could place before the jury
00:37evidence which would not only substantiate the statement of the stenographer, but would throw
00:42new light on vice conditions in Atlanta, Gentry willing to testify. Colonel Felder also informed
00:49the jury foreman that at any moment he could bring George Gentry before that boy to give
00:54his testimony. Gentry, he said, was ready and willing to come back to Atlanta. While Colonel
01:00Felder stated that he was in daily communication with Mr. Gentry, the detective department is not
01:05so fortunate. Chief Lanford, having so far failed to locate the youth in Washington, where
01:10he is living under an assumed name and working for a business house there. Coincident with the
01:15proposed investigation of the dictograph charges is the absence of A.S. Collier. Collier could
01:21not be found Friday or last night. At the Williams house where he lived while in the city, he was
01:26said
01:27to have left town with instructions to retain his room for future occupancy. The clerk of the hotel
01:32said that he did not know of the man's whereabouts or when he was expected to return. Collier,
01:37he said, had not told of his destination upon leaving several days ago. It is reported that he has
01:42gone to Washington to locate Gentry, the stenographer, and ascertain whether or not his sensational
01:47affidavit was correct. Another rumor is that he is in Cartersville, Georgia, his home to which his
01:52wife returned several days previous to his departure. Where is Collier? Chief Lanford, with
01:57whom Collier has been closely associated during the latter's sensational operations in Atlanta,
02:02said that he did not know where Collier could be located or whether or not he was in or out
02:06of the
02:07city. Others with whom Collier has been connected say they do not know of his whereabouts. He was seen
02:12as late as Saturday night. Efforts to find him in Washington have been to no avail. I will welcome
02:17an investigation by the grand jury or any other tribunal, Chief Lanford said, and so will all the
02:22members of the detective department. We will all be completely exonerated when the charges are given
02:27complete airing. Such an investigation will serve only to act as a boomerang for its instigators.
02:34I am trying daily to find Gentry. So far he has eluded us. If we can find him, I am
02:39confident the
02:40truth will be ascertained. In the first place, I doubt the genuineness of the affidavit he is
02:45purported to sign. In the second, if he did sign such a paper, he was persuaded to do so by
02:50some
02:50unfair means. Let the investigation proceed. I am as anxious as anyone concerned for it to come.
