02:46Hello, everybody, and welcome to this episode of the Fro Wrestling Podcast.
02:49If you've got questions, comments, something you want me to touch on, you just have some feedback,
02:53the best way to get that to me is to call the Fro Wrestling Sound Offline, 267-642-1160,
02:58and I will get to those questions or comments or whatever it is in a future episode.
03:03Tonight, running down the SummerSlam lineup, they have announced the card for Night 1 and Night 2.
03:09I've definitely got some strong opinions about that, and we've got some other tidbits from around the world of professional
03:13wrestling,
03:14specifically this episode, more WWE-centric.
03:17Let's get into SummerSlam Night 1.
03:21The premium live event that is going to run two nights,
03:24you would think you would try to spread your most important matches across both nights in almost an even manner.
03:31I feel like that is not the case, and you may figure out what I'm feeling right from the start.
03:35CM Punk vs. Cody Rhodes is going to headline Night 1.
03:39And I'm not surprised, but it is the WWE Championship,
03:44which just in my perception is the most important championship in the company.
03:49When you think about it, the World Heavyweight Championship main-evented WrestleMania,
03:54so you would think SummerSlam would be headlined Night 2 by the WWE Championship to kind of keep the feel
04:00the same,
04:01but that's not the case.
04:02This year, Night 1, Punk and Cody.
04:04Then after that, the World Heavyweight Championship for the women's side of things,
04:09Liv Morgan taking on EO Sky.
04:11Again, solid match.
04:14Night 1, two World Championships already.
04:16Then we get the Usos and Jacob Fatu taking on Royce Keys, LA Knight, and Solo Sokoa,
04:22who, by the way, there's reports coming out this week in the last couple days
04:26that they are so incredibly impressed with all the work Solo's been doing
04:30that he may be in line for a significantly larger role going forward.
04:34And I actually think that's wonderful.
04:35I love his character recently.
04:36This babyface turn is working for me.
04:39I actually think it fits his, like, arrogant cockiness a little better.
04:42He doesn't have to be, like, the uber babyface or a heel at all.
04:46He could be, it's all, ah, God, I don't want to say it.
04:49It's almost Stone Cold-ish in a way.
04:51He's not Stone Cold.
04:51I'm not going there.
04:52I'm just saying he's a tweener that leans right now more babyface-ish, and I kind of like that.
04:59So we've got, what do we got?
05:00One, two, three.
05:01Three matches down.
05:02We got Brock and Oba, Hell in a Cell, Night 1.
05:05You see where I'm going with this?
05:06These are big matches.
05:09Then from there, and of course, that also could be Brock's retirement.
05:12And you could make an argument that that should main event the show.
05:15I actually suspect it's going to open the show, but we'll see.
05:18From there, Gunther taking on Nick Aldis, a match that, as much as Aldis hasn't been in the ring in
05:24a couple years,
05:24I think there's a lot of people looking forward to seeing this.
05:27And I hope he doesn't come out in, like, some kind of garb that makes him look like the commissioner.
05:32Let him be a national treasure.
05:35Let him be Nick Aldis, the former NWA World Heavyweight Champion, the former GFW World Heavyweight Champion, the former TNA
05:43Impact Wrestling World Heavyweight Champion.
05:45Let him be that guy.
05:47Let him walk out looking like a pro.
05:50I can't wait to see that match.
05:52And then we also, one more match for the evening, Fatal Influence versus the Bellas and Paige, also taking place
05:59on Night 1.
05:59So we have six matches Night 1.
06:01And if we're looking at that objectively, the Punk Coney, the Liv Io, the Brock Oba, Gunther Aldis are four.
06:08No disrespect to the other matches, but those four are over-the-moon important.
06:13Again, this is not a prediction episode.
06:15That's just a card.
06:16Should we do that?
06:17I'll do that in a future episode.
06:19Night 2.
06:20Let's see if you notice a difference.
06:22Night 2, headlined by Roman Reigns and Seth Rollins.
06:25Not surprised, after he did Punk Cody Night 1.
06:27Followed up by Finn Balor and Sami Zayn, which has had very little build to it whatsoever.
06:33I don't know how much I even care about the match.
06:35From there, Baron Corbin and Trick Williams for the United States Championship.
06:40Do I care enough?
06:42I don't think Corbin's going to win.
06:44If Corbin was going to win, I might actually care.
06:46After you just made that custom belt with all the white frillies, I don't see Trick losing.
06:50And that just means Corbin came back to become a mid-card jobber.
06:53I don't like that either.
06:55From there, for the Interim Women's Championship, Charlotte versus Jade versus Chelsea Green versus Tiffany Stratton versus someone yet to
07:03be named.
07:04And I'm struggling because I feel like they're going to plop Nia Jax in there or something.
07:09What I would really love to see is for AJ Lee to come out and take that spot at the
07:13show.
07:13Or Becky Lynch, who's been gone from television for quite some time.
07:17Either way, we still have one more person to go.
07:19But those ladies will throw it down for the Women's Championship.
07:23From there, we have Dan Housen versus Dominic Mysterio, which I know, he sells more merch than everybody.
07:29He's super over with the crowd.
07:31But is anybody really clamoring to see this match?
07:33By the way, there's going to be a Dan Housen ice cream truck rolling around Minnesota for SummerSlam weekend.
07:38So if you're in Minnesota for the show, keep your eyes out for the truck.
07:42And then they're going to wrap it up with the Intercontinental Championship match, Penta versus Chad Gable.
07:46Which, again, amazing match.
07:47But let's be honest.
07:49Night 1 has four legitimate main event level matches.
07:53They really do.
07:54Three if you don't count Gunther and Aldis.
07:56On night 2, Reigns and Rollins is solid.
07:59I get that.
08:00But I would not even consider the Charlotte, Jade, Chelsea, Tiffy, and Question Mark match to be a main event
08:08level match.
08:09Those multi-women ladder-ish style matches or multi-women championship match, whatever.
08:14Those are the things you kind of put in the middle of a show.
08:17So that's not a main event level.
08:19Trick and Corbin, that's not a main event.
08:21Finn and Sammy, really, that's like a TV match.
08:24Dan Housen-Dom, maybe.
08:26Penta and Gable could be quality of match-wise.
08:29But it's not something you right now going into the show feel like is a main event.
08:33So to this pay-per-view, I feel like it's insanely night 1 heavy.
08:37I mean, look, I love the card.
08:39I love that we're getting 12 matches across two nights.
08:41I really, really love that.
08:42It's a little more robust than the 4 and 5 match cards we've been getting for quite a long time
08:47now under TKO.
08:49So the show should be great.
08:50The matches are phenomenal.
08:52I just don't like the order.
08:54I would have shifted maybe the Brock and Oba match to night 2 or the Gunther Aldis match to night
09:002.
09:01Something like that.
09:02You have both secondary championships on night 2 with Trick, Williams, and Penta.
09:07I find that strange, you know?
09:10And Dominic Mysterio, why isn't his AAA championship on the line?
09:13Just to put it on the line.
09:15That's all you got to do.
09:16You don't even have to have him lose it or retain it.
09:19You can have a schmoz ending.
09:20But it just adds some importance to the match, which is something night 2 is missing.
09:24It's just my opinion.
09:25All right, so moving on from SummerSlam, got to address what earlier in the day I was really frustrated with
09:31and now I'm making peace with.
09:34WWE trademarking the name Cruz Montana, which turns out is the new name for Mike Santana, former TNA heavyweight champion,
09:45now signed with NXT.
09:46And at first I was like, who in their right mind came up with this name?
09:50It is a terrible name.
09:52And I was really bashing on it all day today.
09:54And then Mike Santana put it out on social media that he's the one who chose the name in honor
10:00of his father.
10:01Like, oh, talk about feeling like a dirtball, man.
10:04I feel horrible.
10:05I was making fun of the name all day.
10:06Look, if it means something to him, then I'm fine with it.
10:10If this was a WWE creation, get the heck out of here.
10:14And I'm sorry, even if it is a tribute to his father, why do we have to change his name?
10:18He's been on your TV show only last week as Mike Santana.
10:22You don't have to change his name.
10:24It's kind of ridiculous.
10:26You know, it makes you look so petty, in my opinion.
10:30That's just the way I look at it.
10:31Just let the man have his name.
10:32I'm just saying.
10:33Speaking of NXT and the Performance Center, AJ Styles, it's been confirmed, is now working a new job down there
10:39as a full-time coach.
10:40And at first, if you remember, when he first retired, he said that's not what he wanted to do.
10:44That wasn't what he was cut out for.
10:46He didn't want to do that.
10:47He didn't want to be an agent.
10:48He wanted to go out and, like, scout talent, recruit talent, mentor some people outside.
10:54And he's doing a great job with his own son.
10:57Avery is doing phenomenal.
10:58No pun intended, or maybe there is.
11:01But now, full-time coach.
11:03And I actually suspect that he'll be one of the coaches for a season of LFG at some point.
11:08The way he phrased things, I almost feel like they're already filming that.
11:12But he sounds very excited about this.
11:14I'm happy for AJ.
11:15I mean, gosh, that guy's got such a wealth of knowledge.
11:17He's got so much to share with the business.
11:18I can't wait to see what his influence has.
11:21And I'd love to see his son just shoot to the moon.
11:26And now he's talking about both two of his sons and his daughter.
11:29Everybody's got bitten by the wrestling bug.
11:31I mean, and his one son's name is AJ, which will be interesting because you're going to have another AJ
11:37Styles.
11:37You know, WWE would probably make him change his name to, like, Peter Farnsworth or something like that.
11:43But whatever.
11:44Hopefully, we get to see his kids in there.
11:46And the last thing for tonight, CM Punk had a very, you know, concise conversation about his retirement.
11:51Made it very clear.
11:52It all depends on how he feels.
11:54It's not about years.
11:55It's not about contracts.
11:56It's about how he feels, keeping up with his health.
11:58And he actually mentioned something I found very interesting.
12:01He talked about the recuperation.
12:02That he's now recuperating twice as fast as he did when he was younger.
12:05And that's because of the schedule allows them to do that.
12:08Not being on the road 350 days a year, go figure, has a huge benefit to people getting healthy, getting
12:15right, being able to stay in the ring and put on the shows that you're advertising.
12:18And that's coming from a guy who did get injured at the Royal Rumble a couple years ago and missed
12:23WrestleMania.
12:24So I love his perspective on this.
12:26And I hope he's around for a very long time.
12:28And he said he's going to ride until the wheels fall off.
12:29And I can't wait to see what he has in the future.
12:31He has been a very positive force in WWE since returning, no matter what anybody has to say.
12:37People in the back don't have to like him.
12:39They just have to work with him.
12:40And I love everything he's doing.
12:42And I'm very impressed.
12:43That's all the time we have for this episode.
