00:02Not every World Cup hero is a great player.
00:05And not everyone who covets the trophy has noble intentions.
00:10So here's a tale with a difference.
00:12The story of Pickles, the dog who saved the World Cup.
00:17Back in 1966, all of England was pinning hopes
00:21on two Bobbies to win the World Cup on home soil.
00:25Captain Bobby Moore and star midfielder Bobby Charlton.
00:29But a few months before the tournament,
00:31the precious Jules Rimet trophy was entrusted to a couple of other Bobbies.
00:37London police officers guarding the prize in its glass cabinet
00:40at a Westminster exhibition.
00:43Under their noses, the trophy was stolen.
00:46The empty cabinet a symbol of embarrassment
00:48for the England Football Association
00:50and a source of anger from FIFA president Sir Stanley Rouse.
00:54By deplorable, such a trophy should be stolen
00:59or anyone should be mean enough to pinch it.
01:02Soon after, F.A. Chairman Joe Mears received a ransom demand
01:07of £15,000 for the safe return of the precious item.
01:11So Scotland Yard set up a sting.
01:15But in another bungled operation, the man who made the ransom demand,
01:20Edward Betchley, was captured.
01:21But the trophy was not recovered.
01:25Days later, after an unsuccessful national hunt for the trophy,
01:29enter our hero Pickles, a four-year-old crossbreed,
01:33out on his nightly walk with his owner David Corbett in Upper Norwood.
01:39As seen in this dramatic reenactment,
01:42Pickles sniffed out a parcel wrapped in newspaper under a bush,
01:46Corbett instantly recognising it as the missing trophy.
01:52With the villain collared and the mystery licked,
01:55Pickles was hailed a national hero,
01:58receiving a police medal and a special invitation
02:00to the official tournament dinner.
02:02And when it was England who won the World Cup,
02:06well, Pickles became a national celebrity.
02:11He even got an agent, the same agent as Spike Milligan,
02:15and he secured a movie deal,
02:17starring as himself in The Spy with the Cold Nose.
02:22Tragically, like many celebrities,
02:25Pickles had a reckless streak.
02:26And just a year later, he was killed in a freak accident.
02:31At least he went out like a true action hero,
02:34strangled on his own lead while chasing a cat up a tree.
02:39A true story, stranger than fiction,
02:41on football's greatest stage.
02:43There's a guy who he hired some kind of injuries.
02:43It's all about,
