The Nats are one game under .500 and in the Wild Card hunt at the break...but theuir bullpen is BRUTAL. Should they be buyers, specifically there, and go for it this year, or stick to the development plans?
Transcript
00:00stallion wanted us to have this discussion about what the gnats bullpen is clearly broken
00:06they're one game under 500 but they have the best offense in baseball they have arguably
00:11can you make it on you can make a pretty easy argument that james wood's the best hitter in
00:15baseball right like the numbers would support that yeah like he's a definitely a top three top five
00:21hitter right it is easy to suggest they should be spenders and go fix this bullpen like they're
00:29pretty good if you had if if half the games the bullpen had blown they won they'd be clearly in
00:36the wild card if not maybe competing for the division i know the braves are really good but
00:40but you ask this question for them to get what they need they got to lose something that they have
00:45they won't be the same team totally i think this is pretty interesting i'm gonna give talk gnats credit
00:54on this i know stallion is tight with the talk gnats people um he sent me four ways the gnats
01:01have
01:01screwed up their bullpen paul tiboni traded away jose ferrer and never replaced him ferrer was going
01:08to be the closer right was that the harry ford trade we haven't seen harry ford at all is he
01:14hitting in the minors he's really struggling great well at least ruiz is playing well but
01:19that that trade looks like a loser it's too early but looks like a loser
01:25so that's number one they trade away the closer for uh supposed to be stud catcher that apparently
01:31is really struggling in the minor number two per talk gnats the minor league bullpen pipeline has
01:38been barren since 2011 bad gnats bullpens have been an issue since 2015 that's one thing rizzo was
01:44really good at was finding bullpen help right around now um number three to boni's best waiver
01:51claim was george soriano who he turned around and traded for andre granillo who was terrible and
01:57soriano's having a great season in st louis is that accurate stallion it sure is number four and this
02:04would be number one to me to quote biggie number four brian tell me how shocked you are when i
02:11tell you
02:11this the gnats bullpen is the lowest dedicated payroll in major league baseball after they dfa'd
02:17their top signing cnl perez and his 1.9 million dollar salary the old saying you get what you pay
02:23for basically yeah and i'm not even sure i'm mad at to boni for not spending much in the bullpen
02:29when
02:30he's probably not granted a very big budget anyway because they never thought they'd compete like this
02:34this season i don't think they did but the two trades that kind of stings ferrer's good soriano's
02:42good you traded them both out of town do you think they should buy because i don't frankly
02:52if they are if they still sitting if they think they can make a move maybe
03:02but more than likely they're not ready to compete completely
03:06and i don't know what pitcher you're gonna go get right now that's gonna step in here and
03:10automatically just start raking for you like you know what i'm saying
03:17bullpens are so kind of fluky and fluctuating anyway that like i don't know i do not think they
03:25should be buyers it this is not this is a tough sell for the pr department shout out to kyle
03:32and
03:32the communications team at nats park they do a great job it is it is a tough sell to fans
03:38should
03:39they trade away cj or or luis garcia like they have options for guys they could trade and i get
03:47that the fans that are at nats park are going to be bummed out like who's gonna watch now but
03:53i still
03:53think it's the best course of action the only thing i will never get down with
04:00and bob nightingale is a big deal baseball reporter nightingale just casually in a column saying
04:07that they took calls on james wood that's the one untouchable to me that's but i they never
04:13mentioned anything about that and they were up front about the abrams yeah yeah i think i think
04:19it's still the thing just like i i don't believe in getting rid of everything
04:28because you don't want to go yet i believe you gotta at least have your team built to a certain
04:32point so when you decide to spend some money you got enough so many times in baseball they'll get
04:39rid of every damn bite now we're gonna go for it you're not gonna just go for it in one
04:43year
04:44you gotta build it up if you hadn't gotten rid of the people prior then you wouldn't have to work
04:48about building it up so much right 800-636-1067 800-636-1067 listen if you're paulie and natstown
04:59and you are adamant that they should be buyers at the deadline i understand your argument i still
05:05think they should be sellers i think you're ahead of schedule i think some of it is to boney and
05:12this
05:12crew's eye for identifying talent like this dude curtis mead just mashes they got him for a sack of
05:19potatoes like how did they acquire mead stallion they traded like their 10th round pick from last
05:24year's draft yeah like they can clearly identify bats but i think identifying or did that was just one
05:33that they looked up on i think the way uh hakopian actually said this that when he met with the
05:40gnats
05:41um in the pre-draft process they had by far the most impressive and thorough
05:48development plan for him and that really stood out to him like i think their development
05:54specifically with hitting is legit i think that's a real thing you look at how much better cj's been
06:00this year but the pitching you probably got to develop yeah that's what i'm saying baseball is
06:08hitting in uh pitching not just hitting joe is in rockville joe buyers or sellers dude
06:16buyers man they they got the number two team in offense they're gonna let this go by the fans are
06:23gonna pay for it i mean come on man how often do you have a team that can hit like
06:28this they can win
06:29with this team with this offense they just need a little help they don't go out you got to go
06:35out and find somebody huge they got just got to buy somebody and bring in the bullpen otherwise
06:41this offensive thing that we're seeing right now it ain't gonna happen make sure that's not guaranteed
06:46what do you think all right i hear you dude i just think to boney took over with a long
06:54-term focus
06:55you saw that i mean his first major move was trading away mckenzie gore and
07:02because you don't know that this butera came from tampa where they don't spend money but they
07:07keep developing players and the rays are generally a good team they have peaks and valleys like any
07:12baseball team but generally the rays are pretty damn good and they do it in a way where they don't
07:17really spend money a lot of money anyway i think if you're being honest with to boney
07:27he knows that he's never gonna have the budget of i'm not even gonna pretend and say the dodgers but
07:32even like as long as the learners are owning this operation and running it how they have since the
07:37world series he's not gonna have the phillies budget or the cubs budget like he's not gonna have
07:42a top 10 budget all right and if that exists you can't be buying right now well you're gonna be
07:50buying ever if you're never gonna have the budget right so you gotta let's be real so that's what i
07:56feel if you're not going to ever have the budget you can't get rid of everybody gotta hold on to
08:02something to gradually spin and build this thing build this thing who are their most tradable assets
08:08obviously cj's at the top of the list but what about the pitcher that's got named to the all-star
08:12team i think foster griffin's at the top of the list because i think pitchers one year yeah he's
08:17in a one-year deal that was in japan right yeah he was over in japan and he's been an
08:21all-star for
08:22this team i think if i'm the nationals i'd definitely be shopping him because you could
08:26probably get a ton for him and listen are you confident that you're gonna resign him no no and then
08:31even then is this kind of a one-year thing is this really what he is a sub three or
08:36three era guy
08:37that's the kind of question you have to ask yourself and what's garcia's control because
08:41garcia is having a monster offensive season he's a free agent after 2027 and next year could be a
08:48lockout year so it there's some questions be probably will be i mean i i think you can really make
08:56the
08:57case i i know perhaps what i'm saying is unpopular with nats fans they should be selling
09:06this is a continued build for the future but i i understand that that sounds good sell sell sell
09:12buy buy buy but if you're selling how are you building for the future you're building for
09:17four or five years from now okay four or five years from now i would think people are tired of
09:22waiting
09:22four or five years from now that's that's that's a long time and who what's the guarantee the people
09:29that you have now in the farm leagues are gonna be any good are gonna be close to that
09:36you think they should buy i i just feel like i mean baseball seasons are finite resources these
09:40guys are red i understand all that but my thing is i don't ever believe in totally getting rid of
09:46what the only good thing about my team when i don't have anything else over here at all i'm gonna
09:52make this side as bad as the other side no i don't believe in that i believe you gotta hold
09:56on to
09:56something while bringing it in slowly if but because baseball is all about they want to get
10:02rid of everybody to bring everybody in that doesn't work all the time i like this tweet from
10:08ike dog he says i don't know why you think the learners care about pr the fan base has called
10:13them cheap for years and it hasn't moved them one inch from a straight baseball perspective especially
10:19foster griffin luis garcia it makes sense to move on because you're not going to keep them
10:26yeah those people yes there's a demonstrated inability to keep talent right you can call us
10:33800-636-1067 i ask this question you get rid of foster you're saying keep cj yeah you get rid
10:39of
10:39foster griffin are you gonna get a pitcher in here bailing him no per se so my question is what
10:45are you really what are you really trading off to get prospects for being better down the road
10:51we've been getting a lot of prospects that just don't look perspective it's also interesting i mean
10:58this harry ford trade is is a great example of it what if they had ferrer well how many saves
11:03does
11:03ferrer have on the season look that up for me stallion or holds whatever his role is mark is in
11:10land over hills mark you want him to sell jp i'll be honest buddy i do not i agree with
11:17brian
11:17totally and jp you you do such a great job i don't want to mark you're good bro we're friends
11:23you fire away nobody i want to be honest about it and i agree with brian but you kind of
11:28contradicted
11:29yourself where you acted like you didn't want to sell and then you're saying they should because of the
11:35uh usual way things are done with skinflint owners i think is influencing and you know all about the
11:40owners and everything and i think that brian is right man i mean you got to keep your the roots
11:45of
11:45your organization together you've done well with it and if you're going to trade anybody you have
11:51like i told grant and danny the other day you have a loaded area of middle interfielders
11:57and and prospects those are the few deal but you don't just jump out of the boat in the middle
12:04river like you're wayne huizinga and expect to win even if it's four or five years down the road man
12:10that's that's not going to work and the guys that you have that are good now jp they're going to
12:15get
12:15better buddy like brian saying and he's right about that man appreciate the call mark i don't
12:23take care you guys have a good day all right buddy you too i'm not saying i want them to
12:28sell i'm
12:29saying from a baseball perspective for a team that does not have the payroll to compete on the highest
12:33levels amassing as many assets as you can make sense and i think to boni took this job with a
12:41long-term vision the plan wasn't to compete for the world series this year the problem they're going to
12:46have is spending money and until that changes maybe this lockout i i just wonder when we come
12:55out the other side of this labor fight which is going to happen does it one give the gnats the
13:01financial stability they now need to compete or two does does that allow the learners to sell because
13:08you sell with the new ownership understands all right like we now know the the ceiling and the
13:16floor here and we're willing to pay your price but the question is will they ever just change up
13:23and start spending i don't know that may never happen jonesy's in dc jonesy buyers or sellers
13:30what's going on jp what's up much bud what's up you know season loomis check this out
13:38with the lockout possibly kicking in sometime what next year oh you i feel like you got to be biased
13:45i agree
13:46also would be mitch you have got to help out your batting man i mean your average uh your offense
13:54is pretty much decent to to some way at best and we're not being able to help them out through
14:02pitching we're losing games at the end as well somewhere between you know the eighth and ninth
14:09i'm tired i watched several games like that man we we were leading the whole way and then you lose
14:15at the end that i often need help so give me a closer somewhere along the line figure it out
14:24you
14:25got the money figure it out stop being cheap learners that's what i have to say fellas y'all have
14:31a good
14:31day and keep doing what you're doing it's now real good to me all right appreciate you jonesy thank you
14:36you
