00:01Six men pleaded not guilty at the Petaling Jaya Sessions Court on Monday
00:06to a charge of kidnapping a businessman about two weeks ago.
00:10The accused are identified as A. Ravichandran, R. Elangovan, M. Jayaraj,
00:16Moses de Brito John Patrick, Ziauddin, and Muhammad Afiq Safine, aged between 33 and 45.
00:24According to the charge sheet, they allegedly acted together with seven others
00:29who are still at large to kidnap a 44-year-old man with the intention of demanding an 8 million
00:35ringgit ransom.
00:37The alleged abduction took place at a restaurant in Dataran Sunway at about 5.15pm on July 16th.
00:44The charge was framed under the Kidnapping Act and read together with Section 34 of the Penal Code
00:50and those who are found guilty can be sentenced to a jail term of between 30 and 40 years
00:56and can also be punished by whipping.
00:59Despite appeals by the defence team for bail for the accused, the court rejected them and set September 11th for
01:06case mention.
01:07Police had said they rescued the victim in less than 48 hours from a residential unit in Shah Alam
01:14in a special operation that led to the arrest of six individuals.
01:18They said they seized various types of drugs, mobile phones and several vehicles believed to have been used for the
01:26alleged crime.
01:27They said a woman lodged a report on July 17th saying that her husband had been kidnapped and that the
01:33suspects demanded a ransom for his release.
01:36They also said the victim himself was later detained under preventive drug laws after investigators uncovered ties between his kidnapping
01:46and a drug syndicate.
01:48They said checks on employment records and employees' provident fund contributions failed to reveal whether the individual had a permanent
01:56occupation,
01:57and his assets are now being investigated to determine if they played a role in the motive of his abduction.
