00:30Good afternoon and welcome to the Countdown Studio.
00:33Now, from time to time over in Dictionary Corner we have celebrity guests who then read to us letters that
00:39they've received.
00:40More often than not very embarrassing letters, but nonetheless amusing for all that.
00:44Well, over the next six nights at the Freemasons Hall in Covent Garden,
00:49a similar sort of event is happening. It's called Letters Live.
00:53And it begins tonight and the celebration, I suppose, is the power.
00:57It's all about the power of literary correspondence and it involves some of Britain's best acting talents, I guess.
01:04Ian McKellen, Jude Law, amongst others, will be reading letters from very famous people.
01:09Abraham Lincoln's correspondence is being discussed.
01:13Marge Simpson's too.
01:14And people like Elvis Presley fans and the letters that they write in.
01:19And it's a very amusing sort of event.
01:23Six nights of great talent acting and fascinating letters.
01:27Rachel, who has written to you that you'd like to tell us about and that you would be prepared to
01:32share with us?
01:33Well, I get some lovely letters from Neil Satsuma Peel, one of our favourite audience members.
01:37And he draws me pictures of the Little Mermaid and writes to me about what he got for Christmas and
01:42knows of lovely things.
01:43He always writes nice notes and we like Neil.
01:45Neil's wonderful.
01:46He sent me a Christmas card, actually, which is charming.
01:50I receive one this year, which is rather more than I receive from the production staff here.
01:55But that's not strictly true.
01:57I've got a lovely bottle of wine and some chocolates, too.
01:59Now then, Rachel, who have we got?
02:01We've got Conrad's back.
02:03Conrad Tashira, champion with two wins under his belt, works in the pharmaceutical industry in sales in Manchester.
02:11And, Conrad, you're joined today by Angus Eady, works for an accountancy firm in Sheffield, football player with Byron House
02:19Football Club.
02:20And as a youngster in his gap year, you took off with a rucksack on your own around Eastern Europe.
02:26What was that like?
02:27A bit hairy, but I came through it.
02:30Well, hold on a minute.
02:31Hairy, what did you say about that?
02:32Where did you get to?
02:32I went, the border between Serbia and Bosnia was probably the most intimidating part of it.
02:40A lot of guns around.
02:41But, yeah, it was good fun.
02:44Now then, let's have a big round of applause there for Conrad and Angus Eady.
02:51And over in the corner of course, Susie Dent, joined once again by Colin Murray, radio and TV writer and
02:59presenter.

12:22What have you got in the corner there?
12:23Colin?
12:25Conrad has been matching us.
12:27There's a whole time he's been sitting there, so operate was our best as well.
12:30Those last minute seven.
12:33Prolate, which is a geometrical term about spheroids.
12:37It's lengthened in the direction of a polar diameter, but operate is much simpler.
12:41Indeed.
12:42Should we leave it there?
12:43Yes.
12:44I think so.
12:4447 plays 25.
12:46Conrad in the lead, and it's Angus's numbers game.
12:49Angus, just have one large, please, Rachel.
12:51Thank you, Angus.
12:52One from the top row.

13:36Thanks.
13:39Yes, Angus.
13:40Yeah, three, one, six.
13:41Three, one, six.
13:42Three, one, six.
13:42Conrad, three, one, six.
13:43Angus.
13:44So six minus two is four.
13:46Six minus two, four.
13:48Add that to the 75 for 79.
13:51Yep.
13:52And then multiply that by the other four.
13:53Yep.
13:54Well done.
13:54Three, one, six.
13:56Conrad.
13:57Same way.
13:59Happy?
13:59Yep.
13:59All right.
14:00There we go.
14:05So there we have it.
14:0657th place.
14:07Angus is 35.
14:08As we turn to Colin.
14:10Now then, Colin, you've got a little cautionary tale, I think, about being careful when tweeting.
14:17Absolutely.
14:18I'm a Belfast boy.
14:20I'm from East Belfast and Donalds.
14:22We've been talking a bit about that off air, Nick.
14:24And when I was young, Northern Ireland qualified for major tournaments.
14:28And I thought it was going to be like that all the time.
14:31And I found out ever since then it wasn't.
14:33We never really got close to qualifying.
14:35And then came Michael O'Neill as manager.
14:38And in his first qualifying campaign, he had a win percentage of under 8%.
14:44Now, I'm not one of those fans.
14:46I don't scream and shout.
14:47And I don't have the vitriol.
14:48I'll support the manager through thin and thinner.
14:51Humor would be more the way I would go.
14:53And I tweeted out, and I've got the exact words here,
14:55before a ball was kicked in the campaign for the Euro 2016 qualifying.
15:00If Northern Ireland qualify for Euro 2016,
15:03I'll run through Belfast city centre in a green mankini,
15:06with no shame whatsoever.
15:10The win started to come.
15:12Win after glorious win,
15:15after glorious win,
15:16after glorious win.
15:18I remember the moment when it arrived,
15:20when the final whistle blew.
15:21And I don't mind admitting it.
15:23I cried when Northern Ireland qualified for Euro 2016.
15:26How childish is that?
15:27How embarrassing enough.
15:29But you know what?
15:29I'm an emotional fan.
15:31I was very proud when it happened.
15:32But within about 20 seconds,
15:34my brother looked at me and reminded me of what I had tweeted.
15:38As did about a thousand people retweeting it online.
15:40So I had two options.
15:41One was to face it head on,
15:44with a little bit of dignity,
15:46and take my medicine.
15:47And the other one was like a coward,
15:49to do it in the middle of the night.
15:50So obviously I went for,
15:51to do it in the middle of the night.
15:53And then a strange thing happened,
15:55people started tweeting me,
15:56and saying,
15:56I'll do it with you.
15:58And then somebody else tweeted,
15:59some other wing nut,
16:00and said,
16:01I'll do it with you.
16:02So on Boxing Day 2015,
16:04this happened.
16:10Well done.
16:11We ended up raising a whole load of money for charity.
16:1540 of us did it on Boxing Day.
16:16And if I'm being honest,
16:18they said I'd have embarrassment stories this week for you, Nick.
16:20But what started out as an embarrassment,
16:23I actually quite liked it.
16:25Brilliant.
16:26Big round of applause for Colin.
16:27Come on.
16:28Very good.
16:32Brilliant.
16:34Good man.
16:35Good man.

26:47we're back
26:50with susie and her wonderful origins of words what have you got for us today
26:54ah well i'm going to talk about injections so apologies to anybody who's a bit squeamish
26:59uh but the word for uh the eye in latin was oculus it's where we get the idea of binoculars
27:05from
27:06which is literally two eyes if you if you um like um the greek was different the greek for seeing
27:11was um opticus
27:13and that of course gave us optical opticians etc but staying with oculus
27:17throughout history we've given the word or the idea of an eye to anything that looks like that organ of
27:23sight
27:23but in horticulture an oculus or an eye something very specific it's a bud it's a young bud
27:29uh that is uh taken from a plant and it can be grafted onto another
27:34it's a very ancient practice and the roman's word for this was inocularis
27:39it was the idea of transferring this eye if you like this little bud onto another plant
27:42and we took it into english in a botanical sense uh for the same reason
27:47but in the 18th century uh medical researchers discovered that introducing a very tiny amount of an infective agent
27:54um into a person could make that person immune uh to that particular agent
28:00it's the the basis of much modern medicine
28:02and this method was compared to the implanting of a bud
28:05and so they thought what should we call it they took the gardening sense
28:09from horticulture and they used it for uh medicine as well
28:12so that medical use of inoculation is by far the most common today
28:15but very strange to think that it began with an i
