00:00Sociologist Byung Chan Han describes our era as the performance society.
00:05We are no longer oppressed by a boss or a visible system.
00:09We oppress ourselves.
00:11We demand of ourselves to be productive, positive, perfect, 24 hours a day.
00:18You carry the pressure of being enough in two cultures.
00:21To prove that your family's sacrifice was worth it.
00:25If it doesn't fail.
00:26Because failure isn't just yours.
00:28It belongs to all those who believed in you.
00:30Sociologist Brené Brown, in her research on vulnerability,
00:35He discovered that people with a greater need for perfection
00:38They are also the ones who report the most shame and emotional disconnection.
00:43Perfection doesn't protect you.
00:45It isolates you.
00:47So, if biology predisposes you to control and culture demands perfection,
00:52Where do you find the exit?
00:55Almost 2,000 years ago, a slave named Epictetus said something that psychology confirms today.
01:01It is not things that torment us, but the opinion we have of them.
01:07Stoicism does not ask you to stop feeling.
01:09It asks you to distinguish clearly.
01:12What depends on you and what doesn't?
01:14Marcus Aurelius, Emperor of Rome, wrote in his personal diaries,
01:19what we know today as meditations,
01:21a practice that modern psychologists would call therapeutic journaling.
01:26And one of his most powerful reflections says,
01:29Accept the things that fate binds you to.
01:31and love the people that destiny brings you together.
01:35Accepting is not giving up.
01:37Accepting means ceasing to waste energy on the wrong war.
01:41Seneca added,
01:42We suffer more in our imagination than in reality.
01:46How many times have you suffered over something that never happened?
01:50How many nights have you wasted building catastrophes that never materialized?
01:54Stoic detachment is a practical tool.
01:58It doesn't mean you don't care.
02:00It means you choose to invest your energy in what you can transform
02:04and let go of what you cannot change.
02:07But here I want to be honest with you.
02:09Stoicism gives you strength.
02:12It teaches you to resist.
02:13But there is one question that philosophy alone does not always answer.
02:17Why are you resisting?
02:19Where do you let go?
02:21And who supports you when you can no longer support yourself?
02:24No?
