00:04tailoring Black style, let's take a trip to the Met exhibit that inspired it. Based on the book
00:08Slaves to Fashion, Black Dandism and the Styling of Black Diasporic Identity by Monica Miller,
00:14who is the guest curator of the show, the exhibit examines more than 300 years of Black style and
00:18identity through the framework of a dandy. This is the first Costume Institute exhibit to center
00:23on Black style and the Met's history, and the second ever to focus on menswear. It's broken
00:28into 12 sections that represent a characteristic that defines dandyism, such as freedom, heritage
00:34and respectability. The exhibit pays homage to historical figures like W.E.B. Du Bois and
00:39Frederick Douglass, as well as more recent influential style figures like the late Andre Leon Talley
00:44and Virgil Abloh. Highlights include a rare Dapper Dan look and a Louis Vaughn-designed shirt Prince
00:50wore on the Purple Rain. The exhibit opens on May 10th and runs through October 26th.
