This week on Hair Me Out, we follow stylist Sam (@xsamhair) as she gives her client Combline extensions. When Sam first heard about Combline two years ago, she thought it was a gimmick. How could extensions be glued to the hair without damage and in a way that looks natural? But, after talking with other stylists and seeing the Combline process in action herself, she knew it was revolutionary and was going to be the next trend in extensions. She took the Combline course and is now a teacher in the method.

Sam will be using Combline extensions on her client who has thinning hair. Combline extensions are best used around the hair line, part, and in bangs because they blend so seamlessly with hair. Combline extensions glue individual hairs to the client’s own hair. The extensions shed overtime like natural hair does. It is recommended to get a touch up every 4 weeks and fully redo the extensions every six months. Because Combline extensions are more expensive, Sam typically uses another method of extensions for the underlayer of hair and saves Combline for the part and hairline.

00:00When I first heard of comb line, it blew my mind.
00:03It's so different to any extension that I've ever done.
00:07I think we're really at the start of something revolutionary
00:10within the hair extension world.
00:16My name is Sam Hines, and I'm a stylist here at Extensionist LA.
00:21We get asked a lot, what are comb line hair extensions?
00:24And it is an enhancement system.
00:26So it's something that you use to add on to the extensions
00:29that you're already doing.
00:30They're designed to fill in areas
00:33where otherwise another method would be noticeable.
00:36So for example, these areas here in your nape area, in your crown,
00:40a lot of people might have very fine hair in those areas,
00:44or it might be that the hair there is few and far between.
00:48It truly is invisible.
00:50It's not sitting on top of the natural hair.
00:53It's not sitting underneath.
00:54It's truly integrating with your natural hair.
00:57That's why we're able to break the boundaries and work super high up within the crown,
01:03really close to the hairline.
01:05Comb line will not damage the hair.
01:07If you want to put it on one strand of hair, you can.
01:11This is not a method that we would go in and do a full head of.
01:14This is a method that we would combine with our other extensions.
01:18These are made to naturally shed.
01:20It's almost like an eyelash extension.
01:22The client that I am meeting with today is Alicia.
01:25We have actually installed the comb line on her before,
01:28and we've had incredible results.
01:30She absolutely loves it, and she's now become a regular in the salon.
01:34I think Alicia is a really great candidate for comb line
01:37because she has areas that standard extension would be able to reach.
01:42What I really like about the comb line method is that you don't see it.
01:47You also can change your part.
01:49You can wear it up.
01:51I'm able to wear a ponytail before I couldn't because you could see the left.
01:56I really like to have the blonde pieces put in the front so I can have a money piece.
02:01Honestly, this comb line method has been amazing.
02:04There really isn't any disadvantages.
02:06It's very natural, and the movement is very natural.
02:10I actually love it.
02:12Our first step before we do anything is to clarify the client's natural hair.
02:17I love the Bellamy Professional Clarifying Shampoo.
02:21It was specifically designed to be used to prep the hair for the hair extensions.
02:25I always prep my tool beforehand, and I'm going to be using clear adhesive on Alicia today
02:31because she is a blonde, so the clear adhesive is what looks the best.
02:36I'm going to be starting right at the front of the hairline, just in front of the hair.
02:41The reason that I like to start here is because I am beginning my money piece immediately.
02:46I'm seeing the impact that the comb line can create,
02:49and then I know that from there I'm going to work up in a bricklay pattern.
02:54As I'm working up, I'm just going in and seeing where I put the initial comb line,
03:00and if there's any still in there.
03:02However, what I'm noticing is a lot of them have already shed out,
03:06because it has been about eight weeks since that initial appointment.
03:09So now I am sectioning out my hair, really making sure that I don't have any crosshairs within my section.
03:16And then I'm going through and just taking up a very almost sheer slice.
03:22If it's too much hair, it's not going to adhere with the extension.
03:26And then I'll go in with my shield, and I'm going to secure that shield into place.
03:32Then I'm going to pick up my extension, always making sure that I'm fanning out the extension,
03:37so that it can lie on top of the natural hair.
03:42Once I've combed it in, I'm going to roll on that adhesive, and then I'm going to go in again
03:49with the comb,
03:50again with the adhesive, and then brush it into the natural hair.
03:54You have the option of spreading apart the bonds once that adhesive has cured.
04:00You can shorten the lifespan of the extension when you do this.
04:04I prefer just to leave the bonds as they are, because I know that as time goes on,
04:09they're going to eventually separate themselves.
04:13Now I'm going to repeat the process on the other side.
04:16It's going to be almost like a mirror image, but remember our hairline can vary.
04:21So again, if there's any areas where I need it, I'm going to put it, and I always cross-check
04:27as I go.
04:29Once I'm happy with that, I'll go into the crown area.
04:33I want to make sure that I'm giving her that full coverage there,
04:36because for a lot of women, this is a problem area.
04:40With comb line, it's definitely a very flexible extension.
04:44You do have almost that 360-degree movement.
04:48I do find that with the comb line, you can flip-flop your part.
04:52So if you like to have a middle part, and then sometimes have a side part,
04:55you do have that ability to move around and have a flexible part line.
05:01You can move your hair, and it's not going to show, because you see from that install
05:05just how invisible this comb line hair extension is.
05:09So the timeline of your comb line hair extensions is going to be that initial install appointment,
05:14and then four weeks after that, that's when you're going to come in for your infill.
05:17You'll do that infill every four weeks, and as you go on, it's just going to get better,
05:22because you're filling in all of those areas.
05:24And then usually at the six-month mark, that's when we go in and we do a full reset.
05:32Once I've finished the comb line install, and Alicia is happy, and I'm happy,
05:37that's when I'll go in and cut.
05:39The great thing about comb line is it's very minimal.
05:42A lot of the time, you're not having to cut.
05:43You're just finessing what you've put in.
05:46So I'm just going in and softly feathering that hairline.
05:50I always ask my client how they like to leave, if they want it curled, if they want it straight.
05:54And then I'll go in and style my client's hair.
05:57So then it really is that full package, and I'm giving them that complete look.
06:06What do you think?
06:07Oh my god, I love it!
06:09Yay!
06:09So awesome!
06:11Look at that!
06:12The money piece is so plugged in now, right?
06:14It's beautiful.
06:15It blends.
06:16The blonde is so bright, and it blends so well.
06:20Yeah.
06:20Yeah, I love it.
06:21I love how this is all...
06:23Pops.
06:24So beautiful.
06:27I love it.
06:28I love it.
06:29I love it.
06:30I love it.
06:32I love it.
06:34I love it.
06:36I love it.
06:36I love it.
06:37I love it.
