As part of Refinery29's collaboration with the First Lady, we were invited into the White House kitchen with chef Cris Comerford, the first female White House chef in U.S. history. She designed this orzo with broccoli recipe just for us using our #GimmeFive ingredients. It's fast, healthy, and is the perfect meal to make for dinner — with enough leftovers for lunch the next day.

00:00My name is Chris Comerford. I am the White House Executive Chef, and we are at the White House Main
00:06Kitchen.
00:09So I have in front of me five different ingredients that every millennial should have in their kitchen.
00:15Refinery29 picked these five ingredients. For the First Lady's Give Me Five Challenge, we have broccoli,
00:22whole wheat orzo pasta, feta cheese, olive oil, and avocados.
00:26The dish that we're doing today is whole wheat orzo with pan-roasted broccoli in avocado oil,
00:33vinaigret, and garnished with a little feta cheese crumbles.
00:36Broccoli is such a wonderful vegetable. It works better when it's steamed as opposed to like cooking it raw.
00:43So you don't have to be like an expert chef to kind of do this, you know, just use a
00:47little paring knife,
00:47which probably most of you would have at all. Steam it or pan-roast it a little bit.
00:52If I am to choose the best green vegetable, for me it would be a broccoli.
00:57The whole wheat orzo pasta, whole grain versus white pasta is much better for you.
01:03And it kind of like emulates the same kind of texture of rice, so it gives me the same feel
01:09of a white rice,
01:10but it's not, and it's better for me.
01:12This is California avocado, which is a Haas avocado.
01:16Filipinos do actually use this for dessert.
01:18When I came here in the United States and then they used this for guacamole, I'm like,
01:22oh, a savory avocado, you know, which I didn't understand at the time when I moved here.
01:27Feta cheese. It could be made from sheep's milk. It could be made from goat cheese.
01:31So you only need a little bit, and it goes a long way.
01:34We are using extra virgin olive oil because this is not processed in heat, so it could be used for
01:39any dishes.
01:40This is the dressing, which is an avocado oil vinaigrette.
01:44The one thing that I assume millennials would not have in their home is like a nice blender that chefs
01:49kind of use,
01:50but this is a very simple dressing that you could make with a fork.
01:55As you can see, it's starting to get creamy already, so it's good.
02:00I'm just going to grab all of this broccoli from the stove and just kind of add it on.
02:06Add our dressing.
02:08One cool thing about this dish is that you could kind of like, you know, serve it and eat it
02:13at a different temperature.
02:14It could be good like a warm pasta, or it could be good as a room temperature pasta, which is
02:21what it is right now.
02:22And it's actually not that much calories.
02:24You have all the nutritional value of the different five ingredients that you challenge me to make.
