'Everything on the table' as Canada plans response to US tariffs

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney says "everything is on the table" as Ottawa prepares its response to the latest US tariffs announced by the Trump administration. Following a meeting with Canada's provincial and territorial leaders, Carney stressed that all options remain open while trade negotiations with Washington continue ahead of the 19 August deadline, when the new 50% tariffs are set to take effect.

The proposed US measures target billions of dollars' worth of Canadian imports, including consumer and industrial goods, while exempting products such as energy, potash and critical minerals. Carney said Canada is exploring ways to support workers, businesses and industries most affected, while also expanding trade relationships beyond the United States.

The renewed trade dispute comes as both countries continue negotiations over the future of the USMCA. While officials are working toward interim agreements, major issues involving automotive rules, labour standards and broader trade policies remain unresolved, leaving uncertainty over the next phase of US-Canada economic relations.
