A Vietnam veteran mom screamed with happiness and jumped into her soldier son's arms when he returned from deployment to surprise her after two years away from home. Emanuel Minor, a staff sergeant with the United States Army, from Chicago, Illinois, wanted to follow in his mom Laura's footsteps, after she served in the United States Navy during the Vietnam War. Emanuel, 27, had completed multiple tours and hadn't been home in two years – but when he discovered that he would be home on his mom's 71st birthday, knew he wanted to surprise her. Having returned home in early 2026, Emanuel initially planned to surprise his mom at her home, only to discover she had already headed out for a birthday meal at a local Cracker Barrel. The 27-year-old then drove over to the restaurant, where he coordinated with staff, so he could walk out when his mom's food arrived.
