A mom who served in the Navy during Vietnam got the surprise of her life when her soldier son showed up unannounced after two years apart, screaming with joy and running into his arms. Staff Sergeant Emanuel Minor, 27, from Chicago, joined the Army in part to follow the path his mother Laura had set decades earlier during her own service. After completing several tours and spending two years away from home, Emanuel learned his return would line up with his mom's 71st birthday and decided to make it a surprise. He got back to the U.S. in early 2026 and headed to her house first, only to learn she'd already left for a birthday lunch at a nearby Cracker Barrel. So he drove straight to the restaurant and worked with staff there to time his entrance for the moment her food arrived.
