00:03In Melbourne suburbs life on foot isn't always easy.
00:08It's like potholes on the road but the footpath version.
00:11If there's not a safe crossing, if there's some missing footpath or something like that
00:15then people lose their feeling of safety.
00:17Maroondah Council east of the city has identified hundreds of flashpoints for pedestrians
00:22including uneven surfaces, paths too close to traffic
00:28and bus stops with no safe place to cross the road.
00:32They're now working out how to fix it.
00:34It's just about community and passive surveillance.
00:37More people out means you feel safer.
00:40Pedestrians are among the state's most vulnerable road users.
00:4648 people were killed while walking in 2024.
00:50Pedestrian group Victoria Walks is calling on the state government to invest $150 million
00:55over the next four years to upgrade or install about a thousand pedestrian crossings like this one.
01:01But people will only walk when they are safe and when they feel safe.
01:05Both the government and the opposition say they'll consider it.
01:10With the state's population set to tip 10 million people by 2051
01:15there's a push to help people get out of their cars particularly for short trips.
01:20There's about 2 million trips a week that are under a kilometre.
01:25So if we could just get people walking those trips it would reduce the congestion
01:29for when we do need to drive somewhere.
