00:01The film you are about to see contains highlights of probably the greatest innings ever played on Australian soil.
00:10It was the third international between Australia and the World XI on the Melbourne Cricket Ground in January 1972,
00:19and Gary Sobers scored 254.
00:23It was an incredible innings, full of the most savage power, the most brilliant shots, the most delicate placements.
00:34Some of his footwork was absolutely perfect.
00:38At other times, even when his feet were not absolutely in the right place,
00:42the ball still sped off the bat to the boundary with such speed that it left the fieldsman standing like
00:51stone.
00:52Now, many years ago, before Sobers came to Australia, Leary Constantine, the great West Indian who later became Lord Constantine,
01:01told me that we would be thrilled to see young Sobers when he came to Australia
01:06because he was the hardest-hitting batsman he had ever seen.
01:10Well, as Leary himself was a hard-hitting batsman, I knew we had something to look forward to, and sure
01:16enough, we did.
01:17We waited a long time to see it, but it was worth going to see.
01:23He hit 33 fours and two sixes in an exhibition which nobody who saw it will ever forget.
01:31I count myself privileged to have been there and to have had the opportunity of commenting on these innings,
01:39which will live in the minds of all who saw it as long as life shall last.
01:48O'Keefe comes in to bowl the first ball.
01:52It's a half-volley on the leg stump, and Sobers quietly pushes it to mid-wicket.
01:57Pads and everything in a perfect defensive position.
02:01No hint of the fury that's to come later on.
02:04O'Keefe again.
02:06A little short outside the off stump.
02:09There's a slashing square cut off the back foot.
02:14The same shot repeated.
02:16Notice the power that Sobers imparts into that cut.
02:20He didn't get the ball past the fieldsman, but it was a beautifully struck shot.
02:24Now, here it is again in slow motion.
02:28Notice how he keeps his head down and hits right on top of the ball to keep it along the
02:33carpet.
02:36That's a lovely shot, despite that peculiar foot movement.
02:41Now, Jenner bowls a half-volley on the leg stump, and Sobers quietly pushes this to mid-wicket.
02:47Notice again the perfect position of his pad.
02:51Defensive attitude.
02:54And Jenner once more.
02:57And this time, it's a full toss outside the off stump.
03:01And Sobers plays it absolutely perfectly through the cover field.
03:07Gives the fieldsman no chance whatever of cutting it off.
03:10Now, here is a repeat of the same shot.

03:19Sobers doesn't even move.
03:21Now, here it is in slow motion.
03:24A perfect example of how to play a cover drive.
03:27Admittedly, it's a full toss.
03:29But it is so beautifully executed, the ball hits right in the meat of the blade.
03:35Follows through after it.
03:37And Jenner again.
03:38This time a little short of a length.
03:40And Sobers pulls it around on the onside, behind square leg.
03:45Plenty of time to run three for it.
03:51A repeat of the same shot again.
03:55Ball a little short.
03:57And as it turns in towards his body, Sobers swings with the ball.
04:03Perfectly safe.
04:05A repeat again of the same one.
04:08Slower still.
04:12Here it is.
04:15Notice how the ball just turning in towards him.
04:18And he swings with the spin.
04:20And away it goes.
04:22Just behind the square leg.
04:25Now, here's O'Keefe coming in.
04:27Short one outside the off stump.
04:29Another square cut.
04:31A very great power to the man out on the fence.
04:34Repeating the same one.
04:36And there it goes again.
04:38Notice that peculiar footwork.
04:40And Sobers pulls his front foot away to the square side after hitting the ball.
04:44But he does this just to get power into the stroke.
04:48Doesn't affect the accuracy of the hit in the first place.
04:51It happens afterwards.
04:52You watch it closely.
04:54There's the hit.
04:56Beautiful.
04:56Now, he pulls the foot away.
04:59But this is solely as a result of trying to get power into it.
05:03O'Keefe again.
05:05There's a quiet defensive push into the cover.
05:09Beautiful position of the bat and the feet.
05:13Everything is just perfect for a defensive shot.
05:17Without any attempt to score a run on that occasion.
05:21Now, Jenner comes in.
05:23Another one a little short of a length.
05:26Again, Sobers hits with the break and pulls it way behind square leg to the boundary for four.
05:34We repeat the same one again.
05:38Just a fraction short.
05:40Not very much.
05:41But Sobers picked immediately.
05:43The ball was turning in towards his body and it was safe to swing with the break.
05:48And here it goes once more.
05:50The same shot.
05:52On top of the ball.
05:53Keep it down on the ground, you'll notice.
05:56And there it is.
05:59We keep it going to the leg side in case he misses it.
06:03Now, here's Jenner again.
06:05And this time it's a glance behind square leg.
06:08A beautifully played shot.

06:35Very quietly executed.
06:38Here's O'Keefe coming in.
06:40And short.
06:41And short and there's a tremendous pull shot to mid-wicket for four.

06:50The ball reaches the fence almost as soon as it's hit.
06:52Now, here's a repeat of it.

06:55Notice the tremendous power in that shot.

07:09Now, here's a perfect illustration of the fact that to play this shot, you've got to hit the
07:14ball with a horizontal bat.
07:16You can't keep your left elbow up in the air.
07:20You've got to hit across the ball to give it the direction.
07:23Hit down on top of it and get the tremendous power.
07:27There it goes again.
07:31Absolutely perfect for pulling a short ball through mid-wicket with the maximum amount of
07:38power.
07:39Here's Bob Massey.
07:41And this time, it's a half-volley which is driven square with the wicket.
07:47A somewhat unusual shot, but notice that the bat was angled just as contact was made.
07:54There it is again, keeping the handle forward so the ball goes along the ground.
08:02Sobers is quite remarkable playing these shots off the back foot.
08:05Now, here's Lily, a short one just outside the leg stump.
08:10Sobers is inside it in a flash.
08:13And swings it down on the leg side where the fieldsman cuts it off just before the boundary.
08:20Now, here's a repeat of that shot.
08:21See how quickly he gets inside.
08:24There it is.
08:25Sobers is just inside the line of the ball and hits it rather fine.
08:31Lily again.
08:32And there's a tremendous cover drive.
08:35In this instance, notice how fast Sobers is away from the ball.
08:40This gives him room to move and get the power into it.
08:45It carries an element of danger with it, but it's an absolutely savage shot.
08:51Have a look at the way he sort of winds himself up and then sort of uncoils like a spring.
08:58Now, here it is again, Lily coming in, and Sobers waiting for the ball to come down.
09:08There it is outside the off stump, and bang, he puts everything into the shot.
09:15The fieldsman has got no chance in the world of cutting it off.
09:19They all just watch in admiration.
09:21Now, this is a short one from Lily, and another superb shot.
09:25This one is a square cut for four off the back foot, which goes like absolute lightning.
09:31There's a repeat of it here.
09:33Lily again, short, and Sobers on top of it, with that enormous power and that extraordinary
09:42movement of the front foot after he hits the ball, long after the ball has departed from
09:50the blade.
09:52That was a really exciting shot.
09:55Ball went like lightning through to the fence.
09:58Now, Massey comes in, a lovely, quiet, controlled glance on the leg side for an easy single.
10:08There'd be no fieldsman there, of course, the ball would have gone to the fence.
10:12But it's a delicately placed shot, and everything is in perfect position.
10:20He just angles the bat to push it around behind the umpire on the leg side.
10:28Here's Lily coming in once more.
10:33Now, that was an interesting shot.
10:35Sobers played a defensive shot going back, but you'll notice that he angled the bat at
10:40the last minute so that the ball went behind point and had turned it into a scoring shot.
10:45There it is.
10:46Notice how the bat was angled just as he made contact, showing that you can play defensively
10:52and still attack.
10:53Now, Lily coming in again.
10:55A short one, and Sobers pulls it away on the onside for four.
11:01Once again, fieldsmen have no chance on earth of cutting the ball off before it reaches the
11:05boundary.
11:07Here it is slower again.
11:09Notice the speed with which he gets into position.
11:13This is one of the phenomenal things about Sobers, the pace with which he moves into position,
11:18how he sights the ball and then goes into his shot.
11:22Here it is again in very slow motion.
11:28Absolutely beautiful.
11:30Lily once again.
11:34Now, that was a square drive of a half volley.
11:38I can still picture that ball.
11:40I don't think I've ever seen a ball go to the fence so fast.
11:44It went straight off the middle of the blade, which was very slightly angled at the point
11:50of contact, with the most enormous power and perfect timing.
11:56Here it is again, a repeat of the same shot.
12:03I don't know any other player who ever played this shot the same way as Sobers does.
12:09A third, there it is again, the ball going absolutely like lightning along the ground all
12:19the way.
12:20Now, here's Massey, and this time Sobers in beautiful position pushes the ball off his pads
12:28to mid-wicket, and that shot brings up his hundred.
12:30Here it is again, just a quiet, beautifully played stroke through mid-wicket off his pads.
12:38Notice particularly how he just angled the blade sufficiently to place the ball between
12:43the fieldsmen.
12:45Now, Massey once more.
12:49That as you'll see was a half volley outside the off stump, and Sobers cover drove it off the
12:56back foot, and the fieldman never had a chance.
13:00In fact, if you watch the batsman, he doesn't even move.
13:02He knows it's four as soon as he struck the ball.
13:08This power that Sobers displays off the back foot is quite incredible.
13:13There's no other player that I've ever seen anyway who gets anything like this power.
13:21There you see it again, a high back lift, a very long follow through with the maximum amount
13:30of power and timing.
13:32Now, Dennis Lilley coming in.
13:35It's a half volley on the stumps, and it's driven straight back past the bowler, and I
13:40think this was the best shot of the whole match.
13:42I was sitting directly behind the bowler when this ball was bowled, and it was a perfect shot.
13:49The ball hit the bat with a crack of a whip and was past the bowler before he had time
13:55to even straighten up and watch it go.
13:59Everything was right.
14:02The batsman is in perfect position, the blade is perpendicular, the ball right in the middle,
14:10and it's a superb example of a straight drive, and there it is.
14:21It would be very difficult to see a better straight drive than that.
14:25It was a perfect example of how to hit the ball past the bowler.
14:30Now, Lilley comes in again.
14:34I think he must have been worried about that other one because he bowled a very fast ball,
14:39and Sobers obviously was on the alert and played defensively.
14:42You notice the panther-like speed in which he gets into position and gets that bat straight.
14:49There it is.
14:51He was really on the defensive for that one, but he got everything in front of him.
14:56Make sure he kept the ball out.
14:59Here's Lilley once more.
15:05You must be wondering what's going to happen to him next, I think, at this stage.
15:10Now, there's another defensive shot, Sobers back onto his stumps, pads and bat all in the proper position,
15:18and the ball played defensively out into the covers.
15:29No attempt to score from that ball at all.
15:32Now, Watson this time, and Sobers, with that characteristic flick of the wrist,
15:40turns the ball off his pads in the onside round behind the umpire.
15:44Watch it closely.
15:47There it is.
15:48Quite obvious that the bat is turned over just at the point of contact with the ball to give a
15:53direction.
15:54Now, Massey, a very good ball just around the off stump,
16:00and Sobers goes back and plays it defensively.
16:04Bat and pad in the correct position just to fly it out to cover.
16:08There it is, a repeat of the same shot.
16:11Quiet defensive shot.
16:16Now, Massey again, a little short of a length, and this time he doesn't keep him quiet.
16:23Sobers pulls it for four off the stumps.
16:27And in this particular case, you'll see the shot repeated now twice.
16:32Note the speed of the mental reflexes of the player, how quickly he's into position.
16:39There it is, in a flash, he picks up the line of the ball, the length of the ball,
16:45and is able to go into his shot without a fraction of hesitation.
16:50The same thing again.
16:52A very interesting example of pulling a ball off a fast medium bowler.
17:01No elbow up in the air.
17:02You can't play that shot with your left elbow up in the air.
17:05You've got to play it in this particular fashion.
17:11In slow motion, you can see how he comes across the line of flight of the ball
17:15and swings himself away as he completes the stroke.
17:19Now, Watson, short of a length outside the off stump, and Sobers cuts with that characteristic
17:30blade slightly angled.
17:33Get the ball away on the offside.
17:36And here it is again.
17:38The same shot.
17:41There are two ways to square cut, one with a horizontal bat and one with a straight bat.
17:46This is an example of cutting with the bat straight, but angling the blade just to give
17:52direction to the ball, not over the top of it as with a horizontal bat, but he plays it
17:58with a straight blade and just deflects it past the point fieldsman.
18:05It's a very effective shot.
18:08Here's Massey coming in.
18:11And there's a magnificent square cut off the back foot.
18:17You'll notice again the way that Sobers rolls his wrists over as he makes contact.
18:30This is repeated again, slower.
18:35A little short, outside the off stump, and immediately Sobers is into position.
18:40The weight on his back foot to cut that ball.
18:45Now, here it is in very slow motion, the same shot.
18:49And notice that Sobers' position when he hits the ball is superb.
18:55But this strange front foot action when he pulls the foot away happens after he has made contact.
19:01And as I've said before, this is done, I'm sure, to give him the maximum amount of power at the
19:09point of contact.
19:11That's the contact position.
19:13That's splendid.
19:14Now, what he does with his feet after that only exemplifies the punch that he's put into it.
19:21It has no effect on the correctness of the shot itself in the first place.
19:28The umpire watches the ball go through to the boundary.
19:32So does everybody else.
19:34Now, Massey again.
19:36This time it's a half volley outside the off stump.
19:39And there's another tremendous drive.
19:41The ball beautifully fielded by Greg Chappell, who has a shot at the wicket, misses, and they get an overthrow.
19:48Watch this one again.
19:49Half volley.
19:51Bang into the covers off the back foot.
19:55And Chappell fielding it.
20:00There is an element of risk in that back foot shot, as you'll see a little later on.
20:05But that one was hit right in the meet.
20:07Now, here's Watson coming in.
20:10Short outside the off stump and a beautiful square cut.
20:14Ball fielded by Chappell on the first bounce.
20:17Don't think he had much option.
20:19Now, watch the way the bat comes down on top of this ball.
20:22This is to prevent any chance of it going in the air.
20:26Right on top of it, with the wrist rolling over as he hits the ball down into the ground.
20:35Massey again.
20:37Short.
20:38And Sobers pulls this through mid-wicket.
20:40As a matter of fact, that ball was not very short.
20:43It was only slightly short of a length.
20:45But in a flash, Sobers picked it up and trusted his eye and his judgment.
20:50And he hits it perfectly in the middle of the blade.
20:55The fieldsmen have no chance at all.
20:58This is a splendid example, I think, of the quick reflexes.
21:03The wonderful eyesight and coordination that the player has got.
21:08There's absolutely no margin for error whatever in this shot.
21:14He's got to judge the bounce and the direction and everything to perfection.
21:19Otherwise, he would be in trouble.
21:22Massey coming in once more.
21:27This time, it's a good ball on the wicket.
21:30And Sobers plays a purely defensive shot.
21:32All going out onto the offside.
21:36Repeat that one again.
21:38Slower motion.
21:40You'll notice bat and pads and everything in the right position for a defensive stroke.
21:46But no attempt to score on this occasion.
21:52Now, Jenner, a little outside the off stump and Sobers cuts.
21:58He was a little late with that one.
22:01But he steered it wide of the slip fieldsmen.
22:04And they were able to run.
22:06And we'll see a repeat of that one.
22:08You'll notice how he starts to go forward and then changes his mind and goes back.
22:15He's not necessarily committed because he started to go forward.
22:20Now, O'Keefe.
22:24There's one short outside the off stump.
22:27Cut very, very hard down to third man.
22:30Again, it's a very late shot.
22:33He almost cuts it out of the wicketkeeper's gloves.
22:38And he's got to be perfect in his timing.
22:40Because if he's the slightest bit late with that shot, he could be caught behind.
22:46Now, there's a similar shot again.
22:48Off O'Keefe.
22:50Down to Walters on the boundary.
22:53But he picks the gap down third man.
22:57It's beautifully played.
22:59Once again, that characteristic foot movement.
23:02Now, here's Massey coming in.
23:05Oh, that's a beautiful shot.
23:08That was a half volley on his legs.
23:09And Sobers has driven it through mid-wicket off his pads.
23:14That is a tremendously difficult shot to play.
23:17And it just cannot be played by anyone but a great batsman.
23:23The angling of the bat is absolutely superb.
23:26Now, you watch it closely.
23:28There it is on the pads.
23:30Keeps those pads there in a defensive position and gets enormous power in driving that through mid-wicket.
23:39Here it is once more.
23:42Beautiful.
23:43You can actually see the bat roll over.
23:45You can see the back of it as it comes through.
23:48Now, Massey once more.
23:54Now, there you have one illustration where Sobers could run into error.
23:59You see, he tried to drive off the back foot.
24:02The ball left him slightly and caught the outside edge.
24:05And fortunately for him, the edge was thick enough to steer it wide of the slip position.
24:09But that is the risk he runs with these back foot drives off the half volley.
24:14If the ball leaves him, and if he's a fraction out in his timing, it could fly into the slip.
24:20You notice the bowler threw his hands up.
24:21He thought he might have had a catch.
24:23But he didn't.
24:25Now, O'Keefe comes in.
24:28Now, there's the first tremendous excitement for the crowd when they see one go right over the fence for six
24:35over mid-off.
24:37That is an incredible stroke.
24:39You notice the other batsman clapping him with his bat.
24:43The hit of six takes a good deal of power at any time.
24:47But to hit one for six over mid-off takes incredible power and timing.
24:51Now, here it is again.
24:53Notice how Sobers coils himself up like a spring and then starts to unwind.
25:00And you can see how the bat comes up underneath the ball.
25:05Now, here it is again in slow motion.
25:07Everything falling into place beautifully.
25:12Half volley, the swing of the bat up and underneath, and there it goes.
25:17Even the umpire turns around to watch, and the batsman on the other end turns around to watch.
25:22Way up over the fence.
25:25Wonderful shot.
25:26Now, here's the reverse.
25:27This is a six over mid-on, a half volley on the onside.
25:31This is easier to play than the other one, easier to get the power into it, but it was beautifully
25:36played.
25:37There it goes again.
25:38Tremendous the way he comes up under the ball and hits it right up into the seats.
25:45Poor O'Keefe, he must be wondering what's hit him.
25:48Two sixes in successive balls.
25:50And watch how he puts his hands up as though he thinks he might be going to get a catch.
25:55But I'm afraid he was disillusioned because the ball was a long way away from him.
26:00They were two incredible sixes.
26:02Now, here's Jenner, and he bowls one outside the leg stump, which Sobers sweeps behind square leg.
26:09Watson chasing it out to the fence as they run three.
26:13Now, we'll see a repeat of this one, and I would like you to watch this closely
26:17because this is a perfect example of a sweep shot.
26:20Now, there it is, the pad in lovely position.
26:23The bat is swung across and rolled over.
26:26The ball is swung behind.
26:28And here it is the third time in slow motion.
26:29A perfect illustration of the way to play the sweep shot.
26:34I don't think you would ever get a better example of that particular shot
26:39because, in particular, the pads are perfect,
26:43and then the bat movement comes in across and rolling over
26:48to keep the ball down on the ground at the same time, giving it direction.
26:56Trouble with a lot of people is they put their pad too far across
26:59and get bowled around their legs.
27:01Now, Jenner again, short outside the off stump,
27:05and this time Sobers goes back and cuts for four off the back foot.
27:10We'll repeat that one.
27:13Notice again how he starts to go forward and then goes back.
27:16Notice that forward movement slightly, and then back,
27:20and into position for the cut.
27:22I want to repeat that this Sobers does all the time to a slow bowler.
27:28He tends to go forward first, but he is not necessarily committed
27:31because if the ball's not far enough up, he then changes his mind,
27:35goes back, and there's still plenty of time to play whatever shot he wishes.
27:41In this case, a square cut behind point.
27:45It's very interesting, the science of batsmanship.
27:51A forward movement, just enough to get himself into position and to get balanced.
27:57Now, you can almost see the brain ticking over.
28:00So what shall I do?
28:01Now, it's not far enough up to drive.
28:04Right, I shall go back.
28:07And he starts to coil himself up for the cut.
28:10Now, the weight goes through onto the back foot.
28:14And here you see the back being positioned for the cut.
28:20And down it comes on top of the ball.
28:24The wigger keeper expectantly waiting, but waiting in vain.
28:29And now the front foot pulled away again.
28:34Demonstrate the power that he has got into the shot.
28:37Now, Watson, outside the off stump.
28:39And another one of those cuts behind point.
28:45Delightfully over the ball.
28:47His head in the right position.
28:49Watch it again.
28:50Beautiful example of the head being over the ball
28:55and the concentration on the shot as he follows the line of it.
29:00And sets off for the run.
29:01Now, Terry Jenner comes in to bowl.
29:04Short outside the off stump and another cut.
29:08Past point on the offside.
29:10No chance of cutting it off.
29:12Goes through for four.
29:14Again, this characteristic forward movement and then back.
29:19Positioning himself.
29:22Have a look at it once again.
29:24For the last time.
29:27As the bowler comes in.
29:30Batsman girds himself.
29:32Starts to move that front foot down the track slightly.
29:36Now it changes his mind.
29:37Goes back.
29:38Wait on the back foot.
29:39And cut.
29:41With all the power that he can muster to get the ball behind point.
29:45Now, Jenner goes round the wicket.
29:46And it's a half volley outside the off stump.
29:49And a glorious drive straight through the covers.
29:52The fieldman have no chance whatever to move.
29:55As the umpire signals for.
29:56And this shot brought up Sober's 200.
30:00As his partner pats him on the back.
30:04Here's the shot once more.
30:06A glorious example.
30:08A perfect cover drive through to the fence.
30:11You couldn't see anything better than that.
30:13And now we come to the final shot of this great innings.
30:21As Greg Chappell comes into bowl.
30:24And Sober's goes for a lofted drive into the outfield.
30:27Doesn't quite get on to it.
30:30And up the ball sails.
30:32And he's caught.
30:33And that's the end of this innings.
30:35As Sober's leaves the field.
30:36He's given a standing ovation by the thousands of spectators.
30:40Who were thrilled beyond measure at this superb exhibition of batsmanship.
30:45I doubt if anything like it will ever be seen in Melbourne again.
30:48So amidst tremendous applause.
30:51This great batsman passes from the scene of his triumph.
31:19To me there is something nostalgic about seeing a memorable performance.
31:24Be it on the stage, in music, or sport, or anything else.
31:29We have been privileged to see together probably the finest innings ever played
31:35by the greatest all-round cricketer who ever lived.
31:38I hope that it will prove an inspiration not only for today but for generations yet unborn.
