00:17bobby portis man welcome to miami man appreciate you guys for having me it's uh it's great to have
00:21you you said something in the press conference that like really uh stood out to me you said
00:24i'm no throwing you know this was a obviously a lot of you know fanfare for yannis and all that
00:29type of stuff but i know a lot of heat fans that would just pumped up because they got bobby
00:32portis
00:33you're a guy that the the fan base is respected for a long time so what's the fan base getting
00:36you as a player man man starting my role um i'm a six man type of guy come off the
00:41bench and get
00:41baskets rebound on a high level um impact winning leader um you know don't mind calling guys out
00:47don't mind you know saying what's right uh so i'm ready for this man i was born to be a
00:54heater
00:54it was exciting hearing you say that and uh and you bringing up the the old derrick rose sweet what
00:59is uh what are some moments that stood out to you as a young heat fan a moment stood out
01:03to me as a
01:03young heat fan was um 2010 i'm gonna uh what was that 2013 they cut the ac off oh um
01:10in san antonio
01:12bronze start cramping things like that um chris bosh offensive rebound kick out to ray allen in the
01:18corner um actually uh danny green and all those guys hitting all those crazy threes i don't know why
01:23they've seen so many threes that series right right it's all painful like all those things so
01:28um i remember being in my dorm room when i went to college um in 2013 and um in the
01:35dorm room just
01:36watching the finals and things so it's kind of cool to actually be a part of a franchise that you
01:40were was a fan of what was it like uh you know having that admiration meeting pat riley for the
01:45first time i imagine that had to be you know kind of like you're a basketball player but but that's
01:49so it's still pat riley it's a lot of generations yeah yeah i pay homage man uh one thing i've
01:53learned
01:53over my career is that it's okay to pay homage to the guys that come before you um i got
01:58super
01:59admiration and respect for pat um he's a legend in the game hall of famer so um i'm chasing greatness
02:05as well so when you're around greatness it it makes you great can you tell me about the you know
02:11you and bam a lot of admiration there but uh i saw you guys playing around a little bit in
02:15vegas
02:15finally teammates how cool is that it feels great man i've been competing against bam for
02:20nine years now so um i feel like i've played the heat over 50 times and those in that span
02:25so like
02:26um it's been good man just to be around you know competitive competitive winning attitude great guys
02:33right so um i'm super excited for um you know our collaboration on the court obviously being able
02:40to mix it up with me and yannis or bam and yannis or me and bam um you know i
02:45think it's going to be
02:45super great to um to be a part of this what were the things that you respected about his game
02:50when as an opponent just getting better every year um i think every year he's gotten better
02:54um you know he went from just catching lives with dya this first couple years and things like that
03:00to bringing the ball off the rim and pushing the ball in transition to last year shooting threes now
03:06so um i think as a pro and other pros respect pros that go hard and work and get better
03:11um i admire i admire guys that you know get better every year and he's one of those guys in
03:17that pool
03:18that every year just keeps getting better from your standpoint i know you mentioned uh in the press
03:22conference like you're not worried about all the other stuff in the east but yeah there's been a lot
03:26of chatter about uh the heat they got yannis yannis has passed his better years what do you say to
03:31that
03:31i mean you know you know he's gone through a a tumultuous last couple years but do you feel like
03:36yannis still has a ton more on the bone uh that that there's to show because it feels like a
03:41lot of
03:41people are overlooking them yeah i'm just gonna say one word man he hungry he hungry man i can say
03:47that he hungry how about you i'm hungry too we made the playoffs last year we's on the run
03:53win first round x is three years in a row um obviously the last couple years been a lot of
03:59chatter about trades um a lot of blurry kind of foggy clouds in milwaukee with us
04:05uh with with what's going to happen next with coaching movements with all type of things so
04:11finally get into a stable situation where we know coach spo is going to be the coach right
04:16um and we know the expectation every day um so building the good habits um is going to be easy
04:23to do when it's set in stone already i wanted to ask you about that stavelness because uh you know
04:28spo a little bit like you got some chance in the in the world cup with him what are the
04:31things you
04:31remember about him when you got some some chances for him to be your coach um the things i remember
04:36about him is just how how his preparation um he's super super prepared um and then being able to adjust
04:43um think we're playing in the world cup you know it's different style of style of play uh it's more
04:48half court oriented um trying to get mismatches they throw in a post a lot and beat guys up try
04:54to post
04:54up guards and things like that so um one thing i admired about him during that run was that he
05:00was
05:00our defensive coach so he was able to adjust on the fly on depending on who we were playing and
05:06what their personnel was and that was kind of eye-opening for me what's it like being in a
05:11situation you know you you said you wanted to be here but you guys had a lot of great battles
05:14back
05:15and forth what were those first conversations like about man like it was such a pain in the ass to
05:19try
05:19and to you know to get you out of your comfort spots and knowing like what a player you want
05:23to try
05:23and you know take out of a series so what were those conversations like with spo i kind of joked
05:28with
05:28man i told him like you know it's kind of cool i don't have to see that double team from
05:32the nail
05:32anymore obviously he started laughing and stuff so it's fun man just to be a part of this great
05:38franchise um i think it sounds kind of cliche but i i i love their approach i love their culture
05:45i love their mentality i have that same mentality each and every day no matter who's playing no matter
05:51who's there we're here to win and i always want to win i've been a winner my whole life and
05:55i want to
05:55keep winning i don't know if you got any time in vegas but you mentioned your leadership they had
05:59nicola jovic was out there for some of the practices he's kind of going through some ups and downs in
06:04his career but everybody obviously sees the talent you see him play with serbia and whatnot yeah what
06:08do you think uh you see him as a player and what he needs to kind of find his footing
06:12to to be more
06:12consistent yes i worked out with him on friday last week um super super talented guy um i think that
06:19you know once you um go on your career and the game slows down for you you kind of see
06:24things
06:24differently um i think with being on the court with a guy like yannis um and myself and all the
06:31other
06:31guys um i think it'll be kind of slowed down for you a a lot more and you'll see the
06:36the reads and
06:37see what see what plays you need to make um and just playing 0.5 ball you know when a
06:42ball gets to
06:43you if you have a you know any airspace shoot it um if the guy closes out hard you'll know
06:47you know
06:48like you'll know when to put on the ground uh just making quick reads so i think sometimes as young
06:53players we kind of think a lot and that kind of gets in our way but um just making quick
06:58reads on
06:58the fly i think that'll that's the one one piece of advice i'll give them if you open shoot it
07:03if
07:03you're not put on the floor if you're not uphill dho just making quick reads so it's defense can read
07:08and react what was your family's reaction when they found out the trade to miami happened
07:12we were in miami actually really happened yeah i didn't know it was going to happen that day
07:16um but we were in miami we just got we just came from a dinner um it was a right
07:22it was actually
07:23right across the street at sarah what's called sarah sarah sarah toba sir sure serafina okay yeah
07:32we said serafina yeah serafina so we had just gotten that eating dinner and i just got back to the
07:37house at like 11 30 bro 11 20 and we're sitting outside in the car just talking about like oh
07:44man
07:44like what's gonna happen this and that like literally just sit in the car bro and the second
07:49i step in the house the airbnb my gm is calling me from the books i'm like oh shoot like
07:55what are you
07:55talking about and as soon as i answered the phone my mom started screaming and then everything was
08:02like going crazy on people's phones and uh like this is i guess the destination you talked about
08:08wanting to be there but how was dealing with the summer like i know that the honest thing has been
08:13lingering but the idea that you do get to go with him how cool is that how much was was
08:18that a thought
08:18did you think that was a possibility or did you think it was going to be kind of your own
08:21separate
08:22journey um it's crazy man because as a pro you like like you just don't know you know what i'm
08:31like the only thing that you can control is your work ethic and your attitude towards you know
08:36everything around you so i didn't know that it was gonna you know obviously happen uh i've been
08:44playing with yonis for six years so every year i've been with him after the season if we don't win
08:48at
08:48all um the media is pushing him going elsewhere so i'm not really thinking much of it but i'm i
08:55am
08:55super happy that i get to go somewhere with someone that i'm comfortable playing with that
09:00i know a lot that's my brother that we communicate on and off the court frequently and that kind of
09:06makes this transition better with somebody that you know what'd you think of him hitting the mitts
09:10how'd you think his style was yeah did you see the boxing video that he put up or any reason
09:14yeah he says he tries you can tell if i say that's trash you gotta get better yeah i gave
09:21no punters
09:22yeah but that was trash dude uh before i get you after bobby uh you mentioned the ud interaction
09:27with the spo with the bump and thing with that what was that the first conversation you did at
09:30the vegas summer league i know i know he's a guy he's very much respected your game so i'm sure
09:34he
09:34was fired up to get you absolutely man he was like just hey bro i'm happy with the good guys
09:39now
09:40you know what i'm saying so it kind of feels good to get og's respect and gracious obviously he played
09:4620 years in the league i want to play 20 years in the league i look up to him a
09:49lot just his mentality
09:51and you know what he stood for being an undrafted player being able to come to a franchise for 20
09:57years get his number retired um those are all things that that you just dream of as a kid and
10:03i'm super happy that i was able to obviously be a part of this franchise but obviously have
10:08great guys that's come before me that's worn a jersey that understands what it what it means to
10:13be a hero well he fans are looking forward to hearing your games uh here on the station bobby we're
10:18glad that you're here man and uh congratulations on a great summer man all the best to you buddy
