00:00for those junks fans who have not heard the news why don't you share with them the big news about
00:05what you will be doing on saturday july 25th well thank you flexi uh i don't know who said no
00:13i
00:13don't know who they couldn't get first i only know they asked me uh the nationals said will you
00:19broadcast a game with charlie slows doing color commentary while one of the best play-by-play
00:24event in the world does play-by-play and i of course said yes that was the entire process very
00:29good it's it's unbelievable now frankly that's that's great news that's very awesome great
00:34opportunity at some point or you have to break out it's going to be charlie slows with your version
00:40of charlie slows sitting in the booth right i mean that's got to happen at some point the battling
00:44slows yeah it's it's one and now my my flows is a caricature like my i forget my john walton
00:51i think
00:51is a pretty good john walton yeah slows is basically like this exaggerated cartoonish
00:57version of the great charlie slow yes yes i don't know how that would go over on the official
01:01that's broadcast okay i'm thinking close to a part in church but you know he'll want me to do some
01:06impressions i mean we'll probably get some bob carpenter in we'll probably kick an old school
01:10ray knight here and there uh you know there'll be some mess around well i've forgotten can you give
01:15me a ray knight like just off the top of your head i've forgotten what he's like i just think
01:19of his big
01:19head now now hold on johnny the left-hander there that so geo he pitched and he when he threw
01:29it
01:29you know sometimes it was a ball yeah well listen you'll kill it and i don't know is it something
01:38that you've always aspired to to to to do play-by-play that kind of thing color commentary for a
01:43game
01:44so eric eric that's actually a hard question to answer it sounds pretty simple in elementary it's
01:49one of those things where i didn't even dream that was possible right does that make any sense
01:53yes like every every idiot thinks they can do that is they're like making interesting comments
01:57during the ball game there's even a seinfeld episode about that where uh george costanza's
02:02unemployed and jerry's like what do you want to do he's like i could make i could do a color
02:06commentary i make interesting comments during the meds game he's like yeah they usually give those
02:09ex-ball players you know what i mean like there is a it's so beyond what i ever thought was
02:15possible
02:15that it wasn't something i like realistically aspired to do it was as dumb as i am it was more
02:20realistic for me in my dumb dreams to go i'll be playing major league baseball that was probably
02:25more tangible to being able to be one of the small smaller number of people that calls or does
02:30color on on big league games but you are an ex-college ball player so you have you have that
02:35expertise
02:36hall of fame you're in the gw hall of fame got some chops danny you got some chops
02:42there's there's something there that it probably qualifies me to maybe call a high school game like
02:47outside of richmond like i think that's probably the the level but you're filling in for dave jagler
02:53he's not an ex-ball player is he yeah but this might be more something he's trained for you know
02:58what i mean he kind of dedicated his life to doing um i could just say this we've had opportunities
03:03to
03:04to like bounce in on things or maybe jump in like a caps broadcast don't do what we did
03:09don't get hammered beforehand and then make it all about you for 10 minutes yeah don't do that that
03:15doesn't go over well that's the best advice we can give yeah that doesn't go i know enough
03:19yeah i know enough to not get intoxicated before doing the nats radio podcast i do know that
03:25i did it as a stretch a slight buzz was definitely oh no no i was drunk hey hey danny
03:31what do you think
03:31about ending the broadcast after seven innings because if this team only played seven innings
03:36they'd have an amazing record boys i this is you're doing this jp but you're 100 right i mean
03:42i've been down there in the tunnel so for those that don't know um uh toby gp and myself we've
03:50been fortunate enough to do nats post games you could tell jason the post game is after the baseball
03:54game at night he wouldn't know but he wouldn't know he probably hasn't seen one or heard one but we
03:59so what we do what they've got to do it's really really cool but for wins we are right down
04:04there
04:04in the tunnel right next to the opposing dugout and the last out happens and the gate opens up and
04:10we you know jog our fat butts onto the field and we're doing player interviews right as uh pretty
04:15much you know seconds after the game ends well you've got to be down there in case the team wins
04:20right i have seen a thousand runs scored by opponents from that little spot right next to their
04:27dugout i mean i was there for that phillies 13 run shebangas i was there for the yankees meltdowns
04:33a couple different times it's been galling and you know you could sort of feel it coming the uh
04:38the opposing bench it's something it's hard to explain but when they know they're going to win
04:43even though they're losing you can see that vibe you can see these guys kind of you know winking at
04:48each other and pointing at each other because yeah this is what's going to happen or i know this
04:51pitch is coming or whatever it is there are no good answers right now guys in that bullpen look the
04:56litany of names that they've run through just trying it's dozens of pitchers you seriously
05:01dozens of pitchers in this national bullpen and there's no reliable option for blake peter and
05:06company right now you get like final you know nine twelve outs danny are you getting borderline like
05:11bullpen ptsd like like you're right there and you're seeing like you're mentioning you're seeing
05:16it happen you're seeing it unfold right in front of you i mean yeah i the uh i had a
05:21view of jazz
05:22chisholm's home run uh the other night uh you know i think it was friday night and it was clearly
05:26fair guys i could see because it went right down the right field line right in front of my face
05:30it's uh you know a lot of whiplash cases uh for for the pitchers who have you know thrown very
05:36mediocre pitches and hadn't turned very quickly as the balls escaped the yard that's supposed to
05:40enclose things it's a disaster i don't know what they do here um at the deadline because it's such a
05:45fascinating case study right there there are a bunch of things and a bunch of pieces and a bunch of
05:49things going on with this team that simply should not be over a large enough sample if you told me
05:54they'll have one of the worst starting staffs in major league baseball it's not hyperbolic that's
05:58kind of the fact foster griffin aside you'll have one of the worst bullpens ever assembled potentially
06:03lead the league in errors and you're going okay well you're you know you're going to win 55 games
06:08this year you're going to be a last place team but that's not the case their offense is so
06:11unbelievably good it's a testament both to these players this coaching staff the development what
06:16they're getting so much more out of guys that have been here you go do you owe it to this
06:21group
06:21that's this good this unit is so unbelievably good we should probably scrap our plan to a degree
06:27and just add a couple of you know middling arms to stabilize things here and give us a chance to
06:33win
06:33some of these games it really is a fascinating question for paul simoni and company i've actually
06:37tried to take and people don't like it i've actually tried to take the the tact of you know what
06:42this is all gravy we were supposed to win 65 games that yeah but i guess that's wrong because
06:48you know as taboni says you never know when you're going to be relevant you never know when you're
06:52actually going to stumble onto something that's going to make you relevant and so i get the frustration
06:57i watch these games i see them blow these lately but it hasn't infuriated me because i'm kind of
07:03taking it as all this is all early and this is gravy and i'm kind of assuming that in a
07:07couple years
07:08they're going to be kind of where we hope they'd be i don't know but i i think i'm in
07:13the minority
07:14well eric i don't i don't hate that thought process because it really it's thoughtful it makes sense
07:18it's taking a 30 000 foot view yeah um of the next handful of years because they're not trying to
07:24build an okay they're not doing an ernie grunfeld wizards bit they're doing a we're trying to build a
07:29juggernaut we're trying to open a window for years and years of highly competitive baseball again not okay
07:34baseball where 60 percent of a rotation is zach littell after an opener where it's miles michaelis
07:40after an opener where it's andrew alvarez slash jake urban who was on the injured list with a 60 ra
07:45you're you're not a competitor you're not a true world series competitor with 60 percent of rotation
07:51being filled by those guys and then you're adding bullpen innings when you do opener bits or or whatever
07:57else again it's one of the worst bullpens ever assembled i understand how we got here um you know
08:01you're throwing stuff at the wall to see if it ticks and nothing has to this point i understand
08:05that so you're kind of going this is all house money this is fun but the counter approach is i
08:10think kind of it's a salient argument though what tiboni has made through top like is you really have
08:15no idea when this is going to happen again the best laid plan i mean you've seen here great net
08:19teams under mike rizzo and company that were unbelievably well designed unbelievably well crafted
08:25you know that they just come up years where they've won 92 95 98 games flounder barely finished
08:31above 500 for no reason other than baseball happens man it's one of those quirky things so
08:36it really is the conundrum i actually generally take that more patient approach that you're talking
08:41about i'm going i do i want to hoard every single prospect in the minor leagues for these lottery
08:47tickets i'm watching these guys develop players that have kind of been floundering for a while
08:51you've got these new uh you know bits of technology tech machines and uh teachable moments and
08:58really emphasizing development in a way that hasn't happened here for some time you're watching
09:02some of these guys skyrocket through rankings and you're going they need their hands on as many
09:07prospects as possible i don't want to give up even the most middling guy for some you know job and
09:12reliever that's going to come in here and be okay i want that lottery ticket either for a major trade
09:18or someone that's going to help the big club would it hurt their development if you bring up one of
09:22their stud arms and you just ask him to do some relief work again another philosophical question
09:28i for some yes for some no for some it doesn't matter like they're they're you know best high
09:34ranking arm right now i mean the other guys are kind of down uh further on the farm in in
09:39development
09:39certainly so i saw uh miguel c may have thrown 102 miles an hour in the in the futures game
09:44he's years
09:44away from being a big leader so he's you know wouldn't be ready to come up and do that anyway
09:48but
09:48their highest profile ready to be in the big leagues arm is riley cornelio and he has not
09:52fared very well at all out of the bullpen he's got an era north of five he's basically a position
09:58player uh trying to get out to this point so it's there aren't a ton of answers organizationally
10:03either either like yeah you could try triple a timmy but and i think they will i think they have
10:08they've been they've been you know running frequent flyer mile programs back and forth between here
10:11and rochester but i don't think there are any great answers right now this minute triple a timmy love him
10:17well danny we are looking forward to all of the that's broadcast obviously here on 106.7 the fan

10:59i would cancel on the nats oh look at that that's how big it is i don't want you to
11:05do that let's not
11:06go to those extremes but we'll uh i'll have my people reach out to your people and we'll we'll make
