Grant & Danny discuss the wild details of Brendan Sorsby's gambling situation, underscoring how insane this has gotten.
Transcript
00:00So I teased this.
00:00I want to pay this off here going to the break after that interview.
00:04Brennan Sorsby is the quarterback who is the highest eligible recruit
00:09in terms of money and interest on the quarterback market,
00:12which is a funny thing to stay still, in college football.
00:14Projected first-round pick.
00:15A lot of people thought maybe he could go top five, top ten
00:17with a strong season this year.
00:19And now he is not currently eligible.
00:22He has been booted from college football for the time being
00:25for betting on not only the college game but his own team's games
00:28when he was a backup early in his career in Indiana.
00:31I bring this up, Danny, to tell you that there's leaked court documents
00:35coming out now that have revealed some of his wide-ranging gambling habits,
00:40and they're pretty amazing from 2022 to 2025.
00:43I guess I shouldn't be overly surprised by this,
00:46but from the court documents, Mr. Sorsby placed thousands of bets
00:51on everything and anything.
00:52These bets weren't for the purpose of making money.
00:57Right there.
00:59I would quibble.
01:00What was the point of the bet, then?
01:02With that.
01:02Are they suggesting when you're bad at betting
01:05and you're not making money, and you just say,
01:07oh, I'm just doing it for fun, is that kind of what they're getting at?
01:10No, I think they're going, and again, you're looking at not an attorney
01:14right here, this old Randy Doe, me, Chuck McDowell, not attorneys, right?
01:17I think it sounds like they're going for he's a gambling addict
01:21kind of thing, and therefore some kind of a victim,
01:24so it's not his fault or something like that.
01:26That's what it sounds like to me.
01:27See, I read this as actually, he was just a dude being a dude,
01:32playing a dude, having some fun.
01:34And what I mean by that is, you guys know when you're with your buddies
01:38and you just put five bucks on a Turkish Basketball League game,
01:41this is not a real sports bettor who's out there trying to get rich.
01:45This is not a guy trying to make millions by throwing games.
01:49He bet on things like Turkish Basketball, Romanian Soccer,
01:55obscure doubles tennis matches, and the very famous Nathan's Famous Hot Dog Eating Contest.
02:03As Toby put in our group chat, one of us, one of us.
02:08He's just doing wackies.
02:09He's just throwing five bucks out on the Nathan's Famous Hot Dog Eating Contest
02:14while he's watching it at the crib with his buddies.
02:16Now, this doesn't change that he should be punished if you're betting on college football
02:20and you're betting whether it's for or against your team doesn't really matter.
02:23I mean, against your team is, as far as I'm concerned,
02:25that is a violation you can't come back from and you shouldn't be able to play again.
02:28I'm assuming he was betting on his team.
02:30Who knows?
02:31I haven't heard those details yet.
02:32But when you're betting a couple of dollars here or there,
02:36in college sports, on international events like Turkish Basketball, Romanian Soccer,
02:42obscure doubles tennis matches, I don't really have a big problem with that.
02:46The kid down the hall can do it.
02:48The kid that doesn't play sports is doing those things.
02:52I care more about, if you want to say non-NFL too,
02:56because you might have played with people, you might have relationships with people,
02:59coaches, front office executives, whatever it is, where you have some inside information,
03:04fine.
03:04If you even want to say the four major sports or something,
03:07because maybe there's some crossover or what have you,
03:09somebody at your high school baseball facility is now a college player at this place
03:14and he knows this guy who plays in the league for the Lions.
03:17Okay.
03:18I don't think you need to sell these kids they can't bet on,
03:21and they shouldn't be, for the record.
03:22It's dumb to do.
03:23But Romanian soccer games is a bridge too far?
03:27It's not all created equal, as far as I'm concerned.
03:29No, I think it's a fair point.
03:30Just in terms of calling balls and strikes about how bad a violation of the law it is.
03:35In other words, we all know that jaywalking is not as bad as murder.
03:38Unless you get hit by a bus.
03:40Well, of course, the result is very bad.
03:42But yes, we know in terms of Grant Paulson jaywalks versus Grant Paulson commits homicide,
03:45we all know intuitively which one is worse.
03:48So you're right.
03:49Betting on Romanian tetherball, whatever the hell it is,
03:51nowhere near as bad as betting against your own college in a game you might play in,
03:55or kind of whatever.
03:55I mean, to me, though, this is one of those,
03:58if you'd like the rule change, you can lobby to change the rule.
04:00This is pretty simple.
04:01They said, here's the rule, and he didn't obey it.
04:04And it stinks because it's nowhere near as bad an offense as a lot of guys will probably be eligible
04:08to play
04:09in terms of the level of wrongdoing on the jaywalking to homicide scale.
04:13But you ran afoul from the rule so many times that I don't have a ton of sympathy in that
04:19regard.
04:19But I understand your point, though.
04:20I think it's a good one.
04:21So, Toby, how do I get a Topps now James Wood inside the Park Grand Slam card?
04:26Apparently, they're making them.
04:28They've dropped.
04:28Do I got to go over to my spot, Collector's World in Annandale,
04:31where they've got all the cards that my kid's getting into now over by Silverado,
04:36one of our favorite restaurants, the Great American Restaurant Chain?
04:39Or do I need to do something online?
04:41You got to go online.
04:42They're only available for the day after the moment.
04:45So they're available right now.
04:47If you don't get them in the next 20 hours and 20 minutes, you won't have a chance to buy
04:51them.
04:51Oh, so it's literally a 24-hour thing.
04:53Correct.
04:54But as many people as who wants to can get one?
04:57Yes.
04:58And how much do they run?
04:59It's $9, and they have to pay for shipping.
05:02Okay.
05:02It ends up being like $12, $15.
05:04Will they number it like one of however many people?
05:07No.
05:07Generally, I don't think those are numbered.
05:09Unless you get lucky, which I have before, and get a James Wood signed one.
05:13Wait, he signs his top now?
05:14Sometimes they will have them sign specific moments.
05:17Like I have one from his walk-off against the Rockies last year.
05:20Oh, that's how you got that?
05:21Yeah.
05:22That's awesome, actually.
05:237 of 10 for that one.
05:25I think the top now cards are sick, by the way.
05:27So is that like a...
05:29What does that mean exactly?
05:31Okay.
05:31So every night in Major League Baseball, I don't know the number.
05:35Guy, it's a 500-foot homer.
05:36Exactly.
05:37There's seven or eight things that are awesome.
05:38They'll make a top snout card to commemorate the moment.
05:41So for the Nationals, let's say Daylon Lyle's two-homer game for the Reds.
05:45So it's like breaking tea, but for baseball cards.
05:46Exactly.
05:47So something crazy happens, like the inside the park Grand Slam.
05:50You pretty much know that's going to be a top snout card.
05:52They come out.
05:53They announce it.
05:54You get on the website.
05:55You order it.
05:55It's a physical card.
05:56Yeah, it's a baseball trading card.
05:58But it just commemorates that moment.
05:59So it finds a good freeze frame from that play.
06:01Correct.
06:02Probably him sliding into home or something.
06:03So like Joe Adele's three-home-run robbery game.
06:06You will have a card of Joe Adele with the glove over his head in the outfield.
06:10Look, there's the card right there.
06:11Sliding into home plate.
06:12You called your shot.
06:13Darius is showing it to you if you look over there.
06:16Oh, I nailed it.
06:17Exactly what it was.
06:17Card 220, $9.99 it says.
06:19Is that about right?
06:20Yeah, I'm going to order one of those.
06:22My kid's going to want one.
06:23Right on.
06:24So it's like real moments.
06:26Then it was NFTs, which were a huge thing for like an hour and a half.
06:30The net went away completely, and now this is taking its place where it's like, oh, yeah,
06:33this is actually way better and more valuable.
06:35But the card game right now, bro.
06:36Yeah.
06:37Dude, cards are in.
06:38It is on fire.
06:39It's like when we were kids, but more.
06:41Mm-hmm.
06:41And the number of players who collect these cards now is crazy.
06:45Like in the big leagues.
06:46You're allowed to do that.
06:47Unlike Brendan Sorsby.
06:48Yeah, you can do that.
06:49You can collect cards.
06:50Like Lane Thomas.
06:50I was talking to my guys over at Collectors World, where I'm getting my cards my kids
06:55getting into.
06:57And he's super into it.
06:58Used to come in when he was a national all the time.
07:00There's players on every team that come in to D.C. to play the Nats.
07:04They look for the local card shop, and they'll go in and just look around.
07:06Well, that shopping center, by the way, has seen a lot of the Ruye's.
07:09That place is awesome.
07:10Yeah.
07:11The sweet fog right there after a million practices, and I have gotten some Crimson Coward Nashville
07:16Hot Chicken dozens of times right adjacent to Collectors World.
07:19You sleep.
07:20I'm going to do a quick impression.
07:21Go ahead.
07:25Okay.
07:26I mean, do I even...
07:29I know where this is going to go.
07:30It's going to be me.
07:32Hey, wake up.
07:34Wait.
07:34Silverado, Great American Restaurant.
07:36I didn't know that that existed right there.
07:38That's right there.
07:39I mean, it's the thing I don't know.
07:40It seems like you're not going there.
07:41The thing I don't know.
07:41You're getting Nashville Hot Chicken or something dumb.
07:43These are the quick things.
07:44These are In-N-Out.
07:45In-N-Out, baby.
07:46In-N-Out.
07:46You know what I mean?
07:47You know how you hate when people do that thing where they do the clapping emoji and say
07:51syllables?
07:53This thing is the most annoying ever.
07:56Yeah.
07:57So say what you just said again.
07:58In-N-Out, quickness, whatever that was.
08:00Yeah.
08:00Like, we're In-N-Out.
08:03Silverado.
08:03Oh, yeah.
08:04That thing.
08:05Grant and Danny.
