Lions lead the NFL with top 10 talent.
Transcript
00:00You're just glossing over it real quick, huh?
00:02What, La Confora?
00:03Yeah.
00:03Do you have more to say?
00:08Other than he, part of his background was actually as a Red Wing beat writer
00:12back in the day.
00:13I did that for a number of years.
00:15But he has been an NFL writer with Redskins back in the day
00:20and now with Baltimore, as you say.
00:24Unhinged is a good, if you follow Jason La Confora on Twitter,
00:27he is unhinged when it comes to the Baltimore Orioles.
00:31He just, he, he blasts the Orioles in management and ownership.
00:35And if you, if you enjoy watching somebody just completely unfiltered,
00:40go after an organization, and I know people do enjoy that,
00:44then go ahead and follow Jason La Confora when it comes to his feelings
00:47on the Orioles.
00:48He eviscerates them, not on a daily basis.
00:51He does it on an hourly basis.
00:55I worry about him a little bit.
00:56Do you?
00:57Yeah, just a little bit.
00:58I'm not sure, I'm not sure he's okay.
01:00Okay, so the ESPN rankings by position,
01:06we've talked about a little bit here,
01:08where they have coaches, GMs, executives from around the league.
01:14And you kind of get into the,
01:17they all evaluate each position group.
01:21And like Penny Sewell was ranked as the number one tackle in the NFL.
01:24Jared Goff was ranked the number nine quarterback in the NFL.
01:29Jack Campbell was ranked the number five quarterback in the NFL.
01:33Today they did.
01:34Linebacker.
01:35I'm sorry, linebacker.
01:36My apologies.
01:36Yeah.
01:36I don't think he's really good at quarterback.
01:38I do.
01:38Yeah.
01:39He would be.
01:39They're number five.
01:41They did safeties.
01:42They did safeties today.
01:44Brian Branch ranked the number four safety in the NFL.
01:48Hopefully he's healthy.
01:49Kirby Joseph is a nine again.
01:52Hopefully he's healthy.
01:54But what did,
01:55what did the people say about it?
01:56NFL personnel evaluator said regarding Kirby Joseph,
01:59he finds the ball.
02:00It's hard to find guys with post range like him who can play over the top.
02:07Brian Branch,
02:08an NFL passing game coordinator said versatility,
02:12toughness,
02:13smarts.
02:13He's a complete player.
02:14He's a baller when healthy.
02:16He's got elite instincts.
02:18So I don't know if they're done with every position group.
02:22I think they might be.
02:24Jeremy Fowler went through and tallied up the data.
02:29NFL teams with the most top 10 players.
02:33Okay.
02:34Does that make sense?
02:35Yes.
02:36So he,
02:37and he said five or more,
02:39there are only nine teams that have five or more top 10 players.
02:45Where do you think the lions rank in this?
02:49Well,
02:50seeing how you've just said,
02:51there's two safeties there.
02:52We know Jack Campbell.
02:54We know Jared Goff,
02:55no pen.
02:55A soul.
02:56I'm pretty sure Aiden Hutchinson is there.
02:58Um,
02:59we didn't go over the wide receivers.
03:01We were speculating.
03:01I'm on Ross.
03:02St.
03:02Brown is going to be there.
03:04So that,
03:07that's seven right there.
03:08Then that's before you get into special.
03:10Do they do special teams like kickers and punters?
03:12Cause those guys would probably be there or at least punter.
03:16They have running backs,
03:17running backs.
03:18Okay.
03:18So Jameer Gibbs,
03:19that would be eight.
03:20Yeah,
03:20they're done.
03:21They did running backs,
03:22cornerbacks,
03:22edge rushers,
03:23defensive tackles,
03:24tight ends,
03:26offensive tackles,
03:26interior offensive lineman,
03:27quarterbacks,
03:28off ball,
03:28linebackers,
03:29wide receivers,
03:30and safeties.
03:30So I got eight by my count real quick there.
03:33Um,
03:33is Lee McNeil going to be on the list?
03:35So maybe I'll go,
03:36I'll say nine.
03:37Okay.
03:38Uh,
03:40there are five teams with five players that made the top 10 list at their positions.
03:44Broncos,
03:45Ravens,
03:45Cowboys,
03:4649ers,
03:46and Rams.
03:47There's one team with six players.
03:49That's the Texans.
03:50There's one team with seven players.
03:53That's a chief.
03:54There's one team with eight players.
03:56That's the Eagles.
03:58And leading the way with nine players is the Detroit lions.
04:02The lions have the,
04:04their roster as ranked by the 70 evaluators that actually did this for ESPN.
04:11Put the lions as,
04:13as much talent as anybody,
04:14if not more than pretty much the whole league,
04:16at least the high end talent.
04:19What's interesting is no.
04:21Uh,
04:21and,
04:22and you'll know this cause we mentioned them on the air.
04:24Lee McNeil did not make the list.
04:27Um,
04:28Sam Laporta did.
04:29Remember we were going over tight ends a couple of days ago and they,
04:32um,
04:32Sam Laporta did.
04:34Don't make sense.
04:34This is way more encouraging than the lock and for a list.
04:38But obviously lock and for was not consulted for this.
04:40No,
04:41apparently not.
04:42Well,
04:42he doesn't work for us.
04:43Well,
04:43and he doesn't work for a team,
04:45which is what the,
04:46there was teams that did this.
04:49So,
04:49um,
04:50he definitely does not work for the team.
04:52No,
04:55certainly not the Orioles.
04:56No,
04:57no,
04:58or balls or the Ravens or anything to do with it.
05:01Nope.
05:02Uh,
05:02Amon Rob,
05:02we didn't go over the wide receiver rankings.
05:04Amon Rob read ranked fifth,
05:06which I think either you or Kang predicted.
05:09I think maybe both of you said you thought he'd be fifth.
05:11I thought he'd be fifth.
05:12I think Kang,
05:13you said the same thing.
05:16Uh,
05:17did you think Jamo made the top 10 or do you know?
05:19I did.
05:19I said,
05:20I didn't think he'd be in the top 10.
05:21I was surprised when you told me that he was 10th in the NFL in receiving
05:24areas.
05:24Yeah.
05:25But,
05:26um,
05:27no,
05:27I,
05:27I love Jamo.
05:28I think there's,
05:28but you're talking the wide receiver.
05:31It's a loaded,
05:33it's absolutely loaded position.
05:35It's probably,
05:35I would imagine around 25 or so.
05:38He made like a second grouping of about five or six that were honorable
05:41mentioned.
05:41He's higher than that,
05:43but I big fan.
05:44Yep.
05:45Anyway,
05:46it's,
05:46um,
05:47it's,
05:47it's encouraging.
05:49I mean,
05:49it honestly is very encouraging.
05:51Well,
05:51they've got,
05:52uh,
05:52this is the thing you've got high end talent and,
05:55but you have to hope the problem with that is you look at it.
05:58Three of those guys are hurt.
06:00You got the two safeties or top 10 safeties.
06:03That's awesome.
06:04But neither is likely to start the season.
06:08So what are we doing?
06:09And then you're,
06:10you're talking about the Sam LaPorta who's hurt,
06:12but the Sam LaPorta sounds like he's going to be ready to go for the
06:14start of the season.
06:15Am I correct in saying Brad Holmes was responsible in some way for
06:18drafting every one of these players because he was with the Rams when
06:22golf,
06:23he did their draft boards when for a less need,
06:26the GM there when golf was drafted and everybody else.
06:30Oh,
06:30I think you,
06:30I think you are.
06:31This is why I am a Brad bot.
06:35So the interesting part of this is if this list was done like three,
06:39four years ago,
06:41it would have been a different looking list,
06:43but you would have had maybe a couple more offensive linemen on the list
06:47potentially right now.
06:49Probably would have been on the list right now and Decker had a chance.
06:52So that's,
06:54that's interesting.
06:54Yeah.
06:55I think I have a lot of high end talented players,
06:57but do they have enough depth to absorb if one of those players gets hurt?
07:03I think the offensive line actually got better this year than what it was
07:06last year.
07:07So we'll see,
07:08but it's encouraging.
07:10It's a,
07:10it's a hell of a start.
07:11If you've got nine guys in top 10 list,
07:13then you should be off,
07:15off to the races.
07:16Yep.
07:17I mean,
07:18if you,
07:18if you think about it,
07:20it's,
07:21it's very encouraging.
07:22The problem is it feels like they have a major,
07:28major flaw and that could sink them.
07:32And that is a secondary.
07:34If they don't get their guys back and get them back quick,
07:38there's going to be real challenges on the back end of the defense.
07:42So a DJ tweeted us,
07:43he says,
07:44if we're being completely honest and unbiased,
07:46our Detroit lions easily can be ranked as low as number 17 in the league
07:50because of our defensive secondary issues alone.
07:53The offense should keep us in games,
07:55but this defense on paper,
07:57it looks like it will lose us games.
08:00Well,
08:01how is the defense going to be better than it was a year ago?
08:04If,
08:05if got,
08:05if they start with this current collection of players on the defense side of
08:09the ball,
08:09they can be better.
08:10If the defensive line in particular,
08:12if a Lee McNeil is better this year than what he was last year,
08:16if Tylek Williams takes a big step forward,
08:18that right way,
08:19you've,
08:19you've got a good start there with the defensive line.
08:21And if your combination of want them and draft picks at the other edge,
08:25if that provides more stability,
08:27then there you go.
08:28All right.
08:29An update on Jalen Duren and insider tells what's going on.
08:32We'll get to that today at 1215 Carson Anderson,
08:35nice someone.
