00:00:01All right Hannah with one minute to go if you were one of these teams drivers where would you start
00:00:05in the start box?
00:00:06Well I think we've seen the winners so far come from the middle of the line but there's so much
00:00:10more space here so it's going to be about pushing really hard on leg one to make sure you're leading
00:00:14at mark one.
00:00:15And Stevie to Hannah's point there's a whole bunch of room now. Eight boats out of the way.
00:00:19Yeah a lot of room on the course here. Oh Australia got a boundary penalty straight away massive error.
00:00:24They just need to start in behind everyone here and set themselves up for a good position after mark one.
00:00:30Perfect control with Emirates GBR at the moment. It might be possible for Fletcher to squeeze the French way out
00:00:36over the top.
00:00:37Think maybe the French are safe. It's going to come down to an acceleration battle and I think how happy
00:00:42they're willing to be to push towards mark one.
00:00:44Fletcher still has control. Slingsby must be behind when this start happens here. Rolex pole predictors on board Emirates GBR.
00:00:50They're way away from the line. Here they go. They wind it up on the British boat. Boats are going
00:00:56to be coming in hot here.
00:00:57The French are hanging in. Look for the line to turn white and we're going to be go. It's go
00:01:01time in Fremantle.
00:01:03Emirates GBR perfect at the gun. They've got their bow forward and they're on the inside. They have to leave
00:01:08from here but look how hard the French are pushing.
00:01:12Okay. Stand by. Bearing away. All right. Smashing out.
00:01:16Here we go. Slingsby's cleared his penalty here. He's going to look to slingshot down off of this mark. He's
00:01:20going to try and dive inside here.
00:01:22French should be able to wind it up and look to dive as well. And Emirates GBR total control at
00:01:27mark one.
00:01:29Keep coming down for me.
00:01:31And at mark number one in the event final your Rolex sprint leader Emirates GBR and now the race is
00:01:36on for a title.
00:01:40Big first manoeuvre coming up here. They're really fast on board Emirates GBR. They've done a nice job.
00:01:44French have been forced out of control by the Australians. They split away.
00:01:49Bond's flying roos are in it. Slingsby will keep it tight early on here.
00:01:53Press is good. And angle.
00:01:57That's good angle for the build. Let's get a good build in here. No lower.
00:02:00Nicely done there for that first manoeuvre on GBR. I think the final is going to be a lot about
00:02:03the mapping.
00:02:04Taking the shortest distance around the course. Minimising those manoeuvres. Minimising the chance for error.
00:02:09Yeah. We saw a big rotation left in the wind. So both Australia and GBR got a lot further down
00:02:14the boundary than we saw there.
00:02:17So the British are well set for a left turn with no more manoeuvres. So I think they'll be pretty
00:02:21happy to go that way if they can.
00:02:22Slingsby surely is going to look to split away right and block in front of the French.
00:02:27Two boards in. Late turning. If they are going to turn right, he's opened the door for the French team
00:02:32here.
00:02:32No, he's following the British. He's keeping it tight. A little bit surprised by that.
00:02:36But if he's that determined to go that way.
00:02:38Lisa, the Australians seem fairly determined to go on that left turn and follow the British.
00:02:43Is there that big a wind shift?
00:02:46I don't think so. I just think generally that turn has been paying off because then you can do the
00:02:51long leg over to the left and approach the next gate on the right.
00:02:54This real long term thinking is paying off. The thing for me that is critical out here is who can
00:02:59get up and running out of each manoeuvre.
00:03:01If you get a little bit wobbly out of each manoeuvre, that's where people are losing the metres.
00:03:06Good angle for the build. Copy that. Yeah, it is very hard to manoeuvre accurately in these breeds.
00:03:10Looks like a game for the British on the French at the moment.
00:03:13Australia are being patient. Very, very patient at the moment.
00:03:17He's following, hoping the British team make a mistake.
00:03:20Feels like he's headed all the time again.
00:03:22Right away Australia here with France. France are going to get themselves some speft in a minute here.
00:03:28They have the space, but they're going third at the moment and they really are needing a mistake from the
00:03:32British.
00:03:33Stewie Biffle sounds pretty calm on board that Emirates GBR boat, Hannah, for a first final with a new team.
00:03:39Yeah, I'm sure he doesn't feel that calm inside, but it's a lot about keeping the comms really nice and
00:03:44calm.
00:03:44Making sure you're giving yourself the headspace to make those right decisions and sail the boat as best as possible.
00:03:49Halfway through the event final here in Perth, it is Emirates GBR, it is DS Team France,
00:03:54and it's the Bonne Spine-Rues 1, 2 and 3.
00:03:57How will they fare in the second half of this event final?
00:04:00Stevie, the defending champions, Emirates GBR, came into this race with a lot of momentum, winning races 5, 6 and
00:04:06finishing 4th in race 7.
00:04:08Yeah, I mean they've looked rapid on this smaller wing and I do think it's a little bit of a
00:04:12sea state thing.
00:04:13I mean, Jason Saunders on the French boat, we see a little curve in the French line there,
00:04:16and the French are progressing up those ladder lines well, definite right shift for them, small gain,
00:04:21but potentially the British will be able to do a right turn with no more manoeuvres,
00:04:26and the French might have to take a left turn here.
00:04:28OK, we are crossing them now.
00:04:31There goes France, tight in front of Australia, Australia will get on the inside,
00:04:35and the France need to watch out if they get overlapped.
00:04:37France got to be careful, you've got to keep clear, Kontan, you've got to keep clear.
00:04:42Oh, they're going to hit the protest button.
00:04:45Oh, it's really tight, British did manage to get out.
00:04:46They're going to get away on a right turn, I think. Yes, you can see their entrails there,
00:04:50and the British are gone. Big gains there for the Brits.
00:04:53The French almost were back in it.
00:04:55That penalty was for not keeping clear, but it will wash off immediately.
00:04:58There it goes, and Emirates GBR, well, it's easy to make a mistake,
00:05:02but they're going to have to make a mistake to let one of the teams in.
00:05:05I mean, it's so nice, Hannah, if everyone follows you round a mark.
00:05:09Yeah, for sure. It just means you're so much more in control of the fleet,
00:05:12but in these conditions, you have to nail all of your manoeuvres,
00:05:16and the margins are so, so fine, so they won't be feeling comfortable just yet.
00:05:19Emirates GBR, the first to turn away, then the French, and then it's Australia.
00:05:24One, two, three. That's how they sit right now.
00:05:26Halfway through is down to the bottom of the course, back up, then down,
00:05:29and then the left-hand turn to a title.
00:05:32See how tight those average speeds are there.
00:05:34The Oracle Cloud telling us what's going on out there,
00:05:37and, of course, average speed is so crucial.
00:05:39The Australians doing a nice job of sailing a bit less distance.
00:05:42That's how they'll be ahead.
00:05:43If you're not going as fast, you've got to sail less distance to do that,
00:05:46but the French, they know how to push, and they've just got themselves out of shape
00:05:49with 30 seconds to go to the start, but this one's not over yet,
00:05:52although Emirates GBR look pretty well set right now.
00:06:01If you can get right turn here, super strong.
00:06:05That's the coach coming from on short.
00:06:07I think that was at the top gate, though, Todd.
00:06:09I think that was at the last gate rather than here,
00:06:11because the left turn at the bottom has always been stronger,
00:06:13so I think that might be slightly delayed from Robbie Wilson,
00:06:16because they were talking of left turn on the upwind.
00:06:18Hannah was saying that.
00:06:19There we go. We've got a split coming from the French.
00:06:22Slingsby's being patient here.
00:06:23Everything we can.
00:06:24Well, they're going to need more than everything you can, I think, Tom,
00:06:26because you're going to need a real bit of magic on this upwind leg
00:06:29if you want to win it.
00:06:31Oh, France have put it underwater, though.
00:06:33Big splash down round there.
00:06:35It's struggling on board that French boat.
00:06:37He's trying to push the limit.
00:06:41It's starting to feel like it's quite hard work on that French boat.
00:06:43They've just got a little bit out of whack.
00:06:45They've been so smooth all weekend,
00:06:47but if there's going to be a time to be smooth
00:06:48and there's more space on the course, the final is it.
00:06:51Let's go down on the water.
00:06:52Lisa Darman and Lisa with just a leg and a half to go here.
00:06:55Is there anywhere, anything the French could do
00:06:57or the Australians to catch the Brits?
00:07:02Oh, I hate to say it, though, but the British,
00:07:03they've looked good all day.
00:07:05I think, you know, the Australians are a little bit wobbly out here,
00:07:08but the British, they're just executing the manoeuvres.
00:07:10They're looking really locked in.
00:07:12So it really is if they make a mistake.
00:07:14To me, in saying that, the Bonds Flying Roos did close the gap a little bit,
00:07:19but Emirates Great Britain looking pretty strong here in Fremantle.
00:07:22That's tough for Lisa to say that, but Stevie, she's dead on.
00:07:25The British are not making mistakes.
00:07:27No, and a really good stat we've had to come in
00:07:29is the British have not gone backwards in a race today.
00:07:31So they've not actually lost a position around the course.
00:07:34They've not been winning the whole time,
00:07:35but when they've put their nose in front, they've been pretty unplayable.
00:07:39And that Rolex chasing time there showed that it's really, you know,
00:07:42that's a big lead in these conditions.
00:07:44And to be frank, whatever they're doing with their boat set up,
00:07:47be it flight control, be it wing trim, be it steering, I don't know,
00:07:51but they are faster.
00:07:55Dylan Fletcher stocking with Hannah Mills, Stuart Biffle, the wing trimmer.
00:08:00Yeah, well, that's three Olympic gold medals at the back of the boat.
00:08:03So that's, you know, the decision making on board should be reasonable.
00:08:09Quite a lot of conversation on board there.
00:08:11You think, you know, they're doing 56, 57 kilometres an hour upwind.
00:08:15They're really calm in their decision making and planning kind of
00:08:18what are the other boats going to be doing
00:08:20and then how do we best defend against that in these conditions.
00:08:25Look at the speed now.
00:08:28Just under 90 kilometres an hour as they exit.
00:08:31Here we go.
00:08:32Here we go.
00:08:33Real, real good manoeuvre away there.
00:08:35The Australians are going to try and split the course
00:08:36and see if they can find something.
00:08:38Let's remember, points are crucial when we get to Abu Dhabi.
00:08:41So the Australians, the Bonds Flying Roos are going to be desperate
00:08:43to stay ahead of DS France here because it's just crucial.
00:08:47These points, when we come to the end of the season,
00:08:49any point counts.
00:08:50First event of 13 as the 2026 season is off in beautiful conditions here in Perth.
00:08:57And there you see it.
00:08:58Look at the numbers.
00:08:59Emirates GBR 100% on the foiling.
00:09:03We heard Contant say super lefty.
00:09:06So when they're sailing these boats, they go downwind so quickly
00:09:09they'll actually be overtaking that wind that they're sailing in.
00:09:12So it should be good news for the French team early on here.
00:09:15Should be a potential gain.
00:09:16We should see the French able to progress down those ladder lines well
00:09:19and potentially they'll sail through that lefty all the way
00:09:22and catch up with the righty in front of them.
00:09:24And it could be perfect phasing for the French to give them a shot.
00:09:27But at the moment the Bonds Flying Roos are hanging on.
00:09:29Gain to France.
00:09:30Right away with France.
00:09:31But I think the Aussies are ahead just.
00:09:35Oh, that's tight.
00:09:36Oh, that's really tight.
00:09:38Right.
00:09:38One more maneuver for France.
00:09:40The Bonds Flying Roos.
00:09:41They've got to do...
00:09:42Oh, no, sorry.
00:09:43Two for France.
00:09:44It's a right turn at the bottom this time.
00:09:46Emirates GBR are going to wind it into the finish here.
00:09:49And it is Emirates GBR that make the right-hand turn.
00:09:53They see the finish line.
00:09:55Emirates GBR open the 2026 season with a spectacular title defense
00:10:00and get the Emirates winning moment.
00:10:04So good.
00:10:05So tight.
00:10:06Look at the top of the screen there.
00:10:07French, two maneuvers.
00:10:09They're going to be slinging round.
00:10:10The Australians are going to be faster,
00:10:11but we've got to keep clear.
00:10:13Right of way France.
00:10:14Boat speed with Australia.
00:10:15It's a drag race for this point in second place.
00:10:18Who's going to cross the line first?
00:10:20It's maybe going to be the Australians, is it?
00:10:22Oh, the Bonds Flying Roos.
00:10:24Woohoo.
00:10:26Wow.
00:10:31Wow.
00:10:33What a finish by the Australians.
00:10:35They changed it up with a right turn at the finish there,
00:10:38keeping us on our toes.
00:10:39But yeah, what a moment for the British.
00:10:41They're pretty excited.
00:10:42Champions in 2025 season.
00:10:452020, 26 season showing they're not going anywhere.
00:10:49You see that storm coming.
00:10:50You see the rain.
00:10:51You see the wind.
00:10:52So they're trying to get this race in before it gets too hectic.
00:10:56Yeah, that's right.
00:10:56We see our AI graphic here, which just shows what a dominant force these teams are in terms
00:11:01of the wins they've had versus the racing they've done.
00:11:04As we see there, 13 event wins for the Australians, the Bonds Flying Roos.
00:11:08They know how to do it.
00:11:09But it's been Emirates GBR that have been the ones doing it lately.
00:11:12And it's all about acceleration into this start and picking your time.
00:11:15First to turn back, Emirates GBR.
00:11:17Fletcher controls things, but it's the Bonds Flying Roos that are going to set things up.
00:11:21It's going to be a dive inside here by Tom Slingsby.
00:11:24We're right above the fleet now with 13 seconds to go.
00:11:27Look at the colour of the water.
00:11:29The wind rose bottom of our screen shows 45 kilometres an hour.
00:11:32It's windy.
00:11:33Spain's got them all trapped at the top.
00:11:35Los Gales have control.
00:11:36He winds it up.
00:11:37It's going to be very, very fast as the line turns right.
00:11:41What a start here by the Spanish.
00:11:44It's loose.
00:11:45It's really, really loose at the top.
00:11:47It's so, so windy.
00:11:48You've got to manage your power across here.
00:11:51Don't put the foot to the floor.
00:11:55And it's the champions from season four, Los Gales, Spain.
00:11:59Look at the speeds over 90 kilometres an hour as they hit mark number one here
00:12:03in the event final in Auckland.
00:12:05You've got to manage how fast.
00:12:06We're nearly 100 kilometres an hour on board the Spanish.
00:12:09Everyone driving these boats are the Olympic gold medalists.
00:12:11Everyone driving these boats is the Sail GP champion.
00:12:14This is the best of the best.
00:12:17And the Rolex sprint leader is Los Gales.
00:12:19They've got control.
00:12:20Can they keep things smooth around the course?
00:12:22Early manoeuvre.
00:12:23Rain coming in top right-hand side.
00:12:25Lisa, it's all changed in the last few minutes.
00:12:29Yeah, so full on.
00:12:31As you can see, just trying to tame these F50s is so difficult.
00:12:34But, you know, now they've got three mark one.
00:12:36The next challenge is this roundup.
00:12:37The rain's pushing in now, so it will settle down a little bit.
00:12:40But it's full throttle out here for the final.
00:12:45Definitely feel it's not full throttle.
00:12:46They're all backed off trying to hold things and keep it safe.
00:12:54What does he mean by big picture?
00:12:56In my opinion, what he means by that is this is the long game.
00:12:58Let's not make a mistake early.
00:13:00Push too hard.
00:13:01Get too fast.
00:13:01Rounding up here.
00:13:02A lot of power as you turn up through the wind.
00:13:04I'm not sure of that.
00:13:05So he wanted the picture to look right on that roundup there.
00:13:08But they're still in the race.
00:13:09It's tight.
00:13:09There's only six seconds in it.
00:13:11And we're only at gate two.
00:13:12All the boats are backing off a little bit here.
00:13:15They're not pushing at full speed.
00:13:16But Spain, expect them to manoeuvre as soon as the Bond Flying Roos do.
00:13:19There go the Bond Flying Roos.
00:13:21Spain should react to that soon.
00:13:26I really like where they've positioned themselves there.
00:13:29Know that the right-hand side's been strong all day.
00:13:31And they're just stretching out the distance between manoeuvres
00:13:33to give themselves the time and the space to execute them really nicely.
00:13:37It's going to be a good move here.
00:13:39MSGBR, the advantage of being last sometimes
00:13:41is you actually get to put the attack on.
00:13:43Roll the dice, as it were, a little bit earlier.
00:13:45As we see a manoeuvre by Emirates GBR.
00:13:47How well can they turn the boat through the breeze?
00:13:50Good tack.
00:13:52Great tack by the British.
00:13:53But you can see they're nursing the boat through the wind.
00:13:55And on our ladder lines with the wind shift that is at the moment,
00:13:58well, it's Emirates GBR in the lead.
00:14:01So halfway through the event final race here,
00:14:03and it is ironic, Stevie and Hannah,
00:14:05these are the only three teams that have ever won a title
00:14:08in the six seasons of SailGP.
00:14:10And it's neck and neck, Todd, right now.
00:14:12Bond's Flying Roos manoeuvre.
00:14:14They won't have the right of way.
00:14:15And I would have thought there's more wind
00:14:16to the bottom of our screen, Hannah,
00:14:18but it's so, so tight wind shift-wise.
00:14:23Oracle Cloud down here.
00:14:25It shows us the wind's pretty similar across the course.
00:14:27Similar wind speed.
00:14:28And it's all about manoeuvres.
00:14:29You can see the teams are nursing it round.
00:14:31Right of way, Emirates GBR.
00:14:32Los Gais are going to have to park things up.
00:14:34That was close to me.
00:14:35He will have pressed the button.
00:14:36We will hear from Craig Mitchell whether that was clear or not.
00:14:40But Los Gais at the moment show us in the lead.
00:14:42They're stretching away still as we approach gate three.
00:14:45And this is going to be seriously dangerous.
00:14:47They're going to go through the max power zone.
00:14:49They're going to have to wind it up and tame these beasts
00:14:51as they turn away at gate three.
00:14:55So close together here.
00:14:57You can see that rain pushing in now,
00:14:58keeping the wind speed high.
00:15:00Bond's Flying Roos and Los Gais super close to that top mark.
00:15:03Okay, we hear no protest from GBR.
00:15:05Dylan Fletcher obviously thought that was safe,
00:15:06but it's Bond's Flying Roos have cut the corner.
00:15:08It's they lead here at gate three, Todd.
00:15:11It's going to be an absolute sprint.
00:15:12And you can be sure that the racers out here on these boats
00:15:15will not back off as they get this tight late in the race.
00:15:18So halfway through the race here in the event final,
00:15:20everyone looking for a title.
00:15:22The second event of season six and a tip of the cap to the fans
00:15:25who have stuck around as the rain comes in.
00:15:28And these faithful Kiwi race loving fans have not left.
00:15:31Come on, Todd. They're tougher than that.
00:15:33They love this. This is just a nice summer day.
00:15:35Look at the breeze here.
00:15:38Fast mode, they say there, Tom Slingsby.
00:15:40He's trying to lock it in.
00:15:41But as soon as you're this tight, Hannah,
00:15:43the racing instincts take over.
00:15:44There's no way they'll be backing off right now.
00:15:47No, that's right.
00:15:47And you've got to be pushing close to the edge,
00:15:49but where the Bond's Flying Roos are there,
00:15:51they're in quite a nice controlling position over Los Gaias.
00:15:53Where the wind's coming from is essentially in front of them,
00:15:55even though they're going downwind.
00:15:57It's a really nice position jibing early on that left boundary.
00:16:00Yeah, they just put disturbed wind on them there, so they'll slow them.
00:16:03And there you go. We can see the graphic coming off.
00:16:04That's showing how the wind's disturbed.
00:16:06Effectively means the Spanish are sailing less wind.
00:16:08They've got less potential horsepower.
00:16:10And they're going to follow here, I'd imagine, on board Los Gaias.
00:16:13Look for a mistake for the Bond's Flying Roos.
00:16:15It'll be a split on the course from Emirates GBR,
00:16:17but it's about accurate maneuvers right now.
00:16:19And Los Gaias put the boat down.
00:16:20There's water over the deck.
00:16:22Another game for the Bond's Flying Roos.
00:16:26Emirates GBR feeling that sailing the extra distance
00:16:28is going to pay dividends on that side of the course.
00:16:31Hannah, do you agree with that move?
00:16:33Well, I think they were a bit of force.
00:16:34They had to split that bottom gate.
00:16:35If they were going to follow, then it's much harder to overtake from there.
00:16:39So I do like that they've split.
00:16:41And if they get a right shift at the top, it could put them right back in contention.
00:16:44This is the final upwind, though, Todd Lee.
00:16:46So this is the last upwind.
00:16:47GBR have rolled the dice.
00:16:48Where's the wind coming from?
00:16:52It's really dropped off across the whole course.
00:16:55I think where the Bond's Flying Roos are is where the best breeze is at the moment.
00:16:59But as you've seen, where Emirates Great Britain have gone,
00:17:02they have got a shift.
00:17:03But it looks like Bond's Flying Roos will cross ahead.
00:17:06Here we go.
00:17:07This is the penultimate leg.
00:17:08It'll be this next gate.
00:17:09And then a left-hand turn to the finish.
00:17:11And then a championship will be won.
00:17:13And it looks like Emirates GBR has sailed into one of those pockets with less air.
00:17:17Meanwhile, the Bond's Flying Roos covering everyone with a massive grandstand in the distance.
00:17:22Yeah, one more good manoeuvre here for the Aussies, Todd, and they're going to be well set.
00:17:26So it was that diving side of the top, the Rolex chasing time.
00:17:30Well, it's still only seven seconds.
00:17:31But in this world, when you're travelling at about 20 metres per second out there,
00:17:38well, that's a big distance, isn't it?
00:17:39They've got a nice lead on the Bond's Flying Roos.
00:17:41One more good manoeuvre.
00:17:43Tom Slingsby, Glenn Ashby, Jason Waterhouse, Sam Newton, Kinley Fowler and Tash Bryant,
00:17:49they're going to be able to bring it home.
00:17:50They won here last year, Todd.
00:17:52They seem to love Auckland.
00:17:54It is deja vu all over again for the Bond's Flying Roos and their fans
00:17:58as Tom Slingsby has come to the land of the Kiwis.
00:18:02And as he passes through this last gate, he can see the finish line.
00:18:05There is no one near him as he checks his six and it is a straight shot to the finish.
00:18:10The battle will be on for second place, but there's no question who will take the win here in Auckland
00:18:15at the ITM New Zealand Sail Grand Prix.
00:18:18It will be the Bond's Flying Roos with speeds over 80 kilometres an hour.
00:18:23It'll be a fast flyby for the fans and the champions here in Auckland.
00:18:27Once again, it's the Bond's Flying Roos two years in a row.
00:18:32Oh, they got it done.
00:18:34How good indeed.
00:18:36There you go.
00:18:37Flags or raincoats, I'm not sure, but they've got it done there.
00:18:40As you see, Emirates GBR did stick that manoeuvre.
00:18:42Good comeback for the British.
00:18:44They're going to get the win.
00:18:45In fact, you'll be happy with that in Los Gais as well.
00:18:482026 season is up and running for the Spanish.
00:18:50They're back in the game.
00:18:53It is the race of champions and it goes the way of the three-time winners, Australia.
00:18:59So, T-minus one minute before the start of the event final here at the KPMG Sydney Sail Grand Prix.
00:19:05Will it be the USA, will it be Great Britain or will it be Spain walking away with the ten
00:19:10season points?
00:19:12Spain late to manoeuvre.
00:19:13I think Spain are going to be very close to being late already here.
00:19:16There was an aggressive little manoeuvre by Emirates GBR and we can clearly see the plans from the two teams.
00:19:21Emirates GBR trying to control the shorter inside route.
00:19:25Still feels early.
00:19:26Could be good news for the Spanish.
00:19:27Canfield very, very early at the line.
00:19:29Rolex pole predictor sits on him.
00:19:31The favoured position, the optimal position, speed versus distance is where that blue travelator sits at the top end of
00:19:38the start line here.
00:19:39Spain wind it up.
00:19:40They're going to have the best chance to be foiling at the gun.
00:19:42Has Bottin pulled the trigger just on time?
00:19:44He's going to be at the bottom end of the line.
00:19:46They're getting fast.
00:19:46I'd love to see the speed at the top of the wing here.
00:19:49Got to be close to foiling speed right now.
00:19:51Eight seconds to go.
00:19:53USA winds it up.
00:19:54Emirates GBR winds it up.
00:19:56Who's going to get this timing right into the gun?
00:20:00Oh, it's brilliant from Emirates GBR.
00:20:02Absolutely on the nose there.
00:20:04But can any of these teams get foiling?
00:20:06USA, hull comes high.
00:20:08They've got a gust of wind.
00:20:09They look to accelerate.
00:20:12They foil on Emirates GBR.
00:20:14Oh, they're going to be gone at mark one here.
00:20:17They've nailed that.
00:20:18Parco, the magician on the flight control, gets the Emirates GBR foiling and they're going to lead at mark one.
00:20:24We can get to lay.
00:20:25Everything for speed.
00:20:26Get it going.
00:20:28It's actually good all the way.
00:20:29That's it, guys.
00:20:30US Sail GP team also up on the foils as they approach mark number one.
00:20:35Here comes Taylor Canfield on the right-hand side trying to close down Emirates GBR who have the inside line
00:20:41and they'll grab the whole shot.
00:20:43Oh, the Emirates have tactical control.
00:20:45Can they cling on inside?
00:20:47USA are going to be trying to get to the, put the disturb wind onto the Emirates boat.
00:20:50They'll come to the boundary.
00:20:52Emirates and USA will have to maneuver.
00:20:54It's going to come down to an accuracy of maneuver competition.
00:20:57Can any of the teams stay foiling?
00:21:00Emirates board fires.
00:21:01They turn.
00:21:02US turn.
00:21:03Can they stay foiling on either boat?
00:21:05And turn it.
00:21:07Here it comes for US Sail GP.
00:21:09How silky smooth can they be?
00:21:10Emirates nailed it.
00:21:11They stayed on the foils.
00:21:13Look on the left-hand side of your screen.
00:21:14Does that hull stay dry?
00:21:15It does.
00:21:17And keep.
00:21:17Oh, Hans Henken.
00:21:19That was beautiful.
00:21:20They're just foiling there.
00:21:21But they're going to sail into the disturbed wind of Emirates GBR.
00:21:25Emirates fall off the foils.
00:21:27This could be the moment for the US Sail GP team.
00:21:29Look at the speed difference.
00:21:31Almost identical right now.
00:21:32Good save by Emirates GBR as they approach gate to the DP world gate here in the event final.
00:21:38Yeah, but the Emirates are going to need, the Emirates have to make a left turn and they're going to
00:21:42struggle to get down to it.
00:21:43If they can go left turn, no, he looks like he's going to have to maneuver again.
00:21:47He'll have the right of way with the US team.
00:21:49But USA will look to go around the outside if he can.
00:21:52Pete, Lisa, are you turning left or are you turning right at the bottom here?
00:21:58I mean, if you can stay on the foils, that's all you want to do.
00:22:01So I think the US are definitely going to take this left turn a bit painful for Emirates Great Britain.
00:22:05Pete?
00:22:06Yeah, it looks like they've done a nice job, you know, nailing that jibe, getting the lay line perfect and
00:22:10foiling out of the mark here.
00:22:11And I mean, if you can follow the first boundary on the upwind, you're going to make a massive gain.
00:22:16It looks like they're doing a nice job right now.
00:22:17So they split the course as Emirates GBR does not want to have the extra maneuver to Lisa's point.
00:22:22And it is USLGP now sailing away of the air.
00:22:25Find a little bit of breeze, Stevie, looking up there.
00:22:27Where do you see the pressure on the water?
00:22:30I think the pressure looks pretty even.
00:22:31Once you build the speed and you get foiling, you're making your own apparent wind.
00:22:35I imagine the wind's fairly similar.
00:22:37It looks to me like up by Shark Island.
00:22:39Probably all the Australian fans giving it heaps on the shoreline there, creating the breeze down the course.
00:22:43But I think, you know, to Pete's point, once you've got the speed, you've got your own wind.
00:22:47That apparent wind keeps going, just milk it.
00:22:49US have got to go wide, wide, wide.
00:22:52Pretty nervous times on board for both boats.
00:22:54So if you're in the US, there's a lot of leverage, a lot of distance between those two boats.
00:22:57And H1 out, OK?
00:22:58They can nail this maneuver and they should be OK.
00:23:00But it does look light near the top of the course.
00:23:01I'll be staying in H1 at the moment.
00:23:04Leg three of six.
00:23:05So we're halfway through the race here for the US teams.
00:23:07It's a longer race than we had before.
00:23:09We're just trying to lay this, right?
00:23:10Yeah, there you go.
00:23:11So that's the question now.
00:23:12Do we foil?
00:23:12But to foil, they'd have to invest and turn away from the gate.
00:23:16They'd have to sail a lot of extra distance.
00:23:17Again, that'd be interesting to find out from Pete, how do you ever make that call?
00:23:21But right now they've got a big, big lead.
00:23:23Spain are foiling, right-hand side of screen.
00:23:25They're going to be eating up the distance.
00:23:26Here we go, the meters here.
00:23:27We see that's great little graphic.
00:23:29Top left-hand side of screen there.
00:23:30The meters are probably going to start coming down for the Spanish.
00:23:33But 400 meters behind is not ideal.
00:23:37So they are looking for a big wind shift right now as Emirates GBR, remember,
00:23:41they won the first event of season six in Perth, trying to get their second.
00:23:45And for US SailGP, this is 463 days since they last made a final.
00:23:50Stevie, you have to go back to season four in Cadiz, when Jimmy Spithill was at the wheel
00:23:54the last time the US won an event.
00:23:56So a big moment for Taylor Canfield and his team.
00:23:59Yeah, I mean, you know, for Taylor and sort of what I like to call SailGP US Mark II,
00:24:04this would be massive if they can do this.
00:24:06But right now, look at our ladder lines.
00:24:07They tell the story, don't they?
00:24:08They're 200 meters ahead.
00:24:10What's a better breeze?
00:24:12Much better breeze to the right.
00:24:14Of course, right here.
00:24:14Key question.
00:24:15Key question.
00:24:16So he said if I do a right turn, I'm probably going to get more wind.
00:24:19I've got to do extra meters for that.
00:24:22Pete, how do you ever judge whether it's worth the meter loss by doing the maneuver
00:24:26versus the meter light gain for the wind?
00:24:28Is that just pure instinct?
00:24:30Happy to go straight.
00:24:32Yeah, I think you've got to kind of go towards the pressure as well.
00:24:36So whether you take the hit at the time, it depends a lot whether you're going to carry on foiling.
00:24:41If you can't get foiling before this downwind, you're going to make massive gains.
00:24:44So that's really the key here is actually making sure you do a good job at the takeoff.
00:24:49You'll be in good shape from there.
00:24:50Copy.
00:24:51Here we go. Can they take off then, Todd?
00:24:54Crucial moment for the US team.
00:24:55Hans Henken right-hand side there, the flight controller.
00:24:58He's going to be trying to nurse the boat up into the air.
00:25:00Absolutely.
00:25:01Understood.
00:25:02Oh, it looks like they're H1, but can they get foiling?
00:25:04It looks light on this corner, Taylor, so I think we've got to go here.
00:25:07This could be an opportunity.
00:25:08Yep.
00:25:08Emirates GBR, if they can make the right turn.
00:25:11Canfield said he saw more wind on the right turn.
00:25:14Stand by.
00:25:14He's taken the left turn.
00:25:15He's opened the door here.
00:25:16And rolling into it here.
00:25:17Can Dylan Fletcher.
00:25:19He's a long way behind, but whoever gets foiling next potentially wins this race.
00:25:23So they roll right into it.
00:25:25There you see Anna Weiss working the handles.
00:25:27You've got Hans Henken on board.
00:25:28Taylor Canfield will have the final say as the Americans now.
00:25:32The speed drops way down, but they've got a massive lead.
00:25:34And as you look at their account so far this weekend, Stevie, it has a bit over the top.
00:25:39They were a sixth, a third, a tenth, a third.
00:25:41But it was Super Sunday that got them into this final where they go third, first, and sixth.
00:25:46Yeah.
00:25:47Well, if they get a gust of wind on Emirates GBR and get foiling, I can assure you that distance
00:25:51will come down real, real quick.
00:25:54Here we go.
00:25:55Pretty close.
00:25:55Pretty close.
00:25:56Can they get up on the foils?
00:25:57I don't think we're going to get it.
00:25:59No, yeah.
00:25:59Great salute, please.
00:26:00No, they're not doing it.
00:26:01Okay.
00:26:01So, just the pressure they need.
00:26:04Not windy enough.
00:26:05Not quite windy enough.
00:26:06Hannah, it's so tense and frustrating, isn't it?
00:26:15I think one of the most important things when you're sailing in these kind of conditions
00:26:19is, yes, you want to be foiling because it means the boat's going faster, but choosing
00:26:23the right mode for those conditions, so when we see the boat's coming out of a manoeuvre
00:26:26and they choose either to put two hulls in or just lift one hull out of the water, if they
00:26:30can get that decision correct, then that's much better than trying to invest in the wrong
00:26:34mode and sailing extra distance and potentially even slower.
00:26:38Stevie, this is the first time we're going to want to hear the F-word on SailGP, the
00:26:42F-word being foiling.
00:26:44Well, yeah, I think we always want to hear that F-word.
00:26:46No industrial.
00:26:47To be perfectly honest.
00:26:48Yeah, we're happy to hear that language, that is for sure.
00:26:50You can see the U.S. team there.
00:26:53They've got a big lead.
00:26:54Yep.
00:26:54200 meters.
00:26:55And the fact that nobody, well, unless the Spanish, this is the moment when you
00:26:58turn away from the wind and you get yourself at 90 degrees to the wind, that's your
00:27:02chance to foil.
00:27:03You need a gust of wind there, which of course would be pure luck that it arrives when you
00:27:07get there.
00:27:07Can the Spanish get foiling?
00:27:09Look at Nicole Vanderbilt, I'm going to work.
00:27:12Rodriguez, Flory Triddle.
00:27:14They've said no.
00:27:15No one foiling.
00:27:16As soon as no one's foiling, there's only one team that's going to be happy about that,
00:27:19and that's the U.S. SailGP team.
00:27:21Because if everyone's off the foils, well, there's every chance no one will do it.
00:27:24And to Hannah's point, you could try and keep getting up on the foils, but for the Emirates
00:27:28GBR team to do that, they'd have to sail across the course.
00:27:31They wouldn't be making any progress to the next gate at all, and that would be a big
00:27:35investment of loss to hope to make that potential gain in the future.
00:27:39U.S. team.
00:27:40They've basically thrown in the towel on foiling, and they've just said, let's just get to the
00:27:45mark here.
00:27:48All right, as they approach the DP world gate here with the fourth and then fifth, sixth
00:27:54legs to come before the finale, and the Emirates winning moment, we check in once again down
00:27:59the water with Peter Berlin and Lisa Darmann.
00:28:01And Lisa, question I have for you is, at this gate, where do you want to be?
00:28:04Because where is the breeze?
00:28:08Well, you know, USA, they're rolling into the jibe right now, so they're going to take the
00:28:12left turn.
00:28:12I think, in general, there has been a little bit more breeze on this left-hand turn towards
00:28:17Shark Island since that wind did that big shift.
00:28:20But, you know, it's just so nerve-wracking out here.
00:28:22I know it's a lot slower than we're used to, but that intensity is super high, because
00:28:26it's not as easy to throw your boat around like you used to.
00:28:29Pete, there's been a lot of chat about choosing modes.
00:28:32How hard is it?
00:28:33Right now, it's pretty obvious that it's two holes in the water, but when it is marginal,
00:28:36how hard is it to make that decision?
00:28:38It almost looks a little better course left here.
00:28:39Yeah, I think the U.S. did a great job.
00:28:40But they were on their top mark, you know, taking the H1 down and then just transitioning
00:28:44to the other and now.
00:28:45But, yeah, it was a little nervous times when GBR came around where they were going to be
00:28:48able to take off on the puff on the top right.
00:28:51But, yeah, you definitely want to be where GBR, sorry, where USA is now.
00:28:55They're doing an awesome job.
00:28:55OK, Pete.
00:28:56Well, tickets have just gone on sale for the 5th and 6th of September in Valencia.
00:28:59Have you got any hope for our Spanish fans have been able to make a comeback?
00:29:03Or does this one look locked down for the U.S. team?
00:29:05Coming up a little here.
00:29:08Well, it looks like they just brought the top marks down a little bit to keep us close
00:29:11to target time.
00:29:14Yeah, I mean, for me, there's still a chance of Spain to get GB, but I wouldn't give them
00:29:18a massive shot of getting all the way to the front from here.
00:29:21So you're saying there's a chance, Peter Burley.
00:29:24So right now on Lake 5 of 6, it is U.S. SailGP team out in front looking for their
00:29:29first
00:29:30event victory since Season 4 in Cádiz, Spain.
00:29:34As they will nurse this thing home, this isn't speed chess.
00:29:37This is very tactical.
00:29:38They're going to have to get the slide, but a massive lead, Stevie, that they picked up
00:29:41on Lake 3 has put them in this position.
00:29:43Yeah, they'll sail all the way to that blue line that you can see just in front of them.
00:29:47That's the theoretical ley line.
00:29:48So if they maneuver on that, they'll be able to make it to the next gate with no more,
00:29:52well, with only one more turn required.
00:29:54But by getting to the line and then being able to hit that blue circle that comes with it
00:29:59at the top there as we're on board the Emirates GBR boat here, and you can see they're miles
00:30:03behind here.
00:30:04They've had to do an extra maneuver.
00:30:05That circle, if the U.S. team enter that, then they own the mark tactically as well.
00:30:10I mean, it's very unlikely that's going to become a play right now.
00:30:13But for Canfield, yeah, any U.S. Olympic team could be the man for your curling team
00:30:17in four years' time because he is ice cold in these tactical conditions.
00:30:21Okay, three.
00:30:23So as Emirates GBR tried to hold on to that second position right now, and the Sky
00:30:27of Spain holding on for third, it's a good time to focus on U.S. Sail GP team.
00:30:31Stevie, this team's been under a lot of pressure.
00:30:33Obviously, we've had events in the U.S.
00:30:35They have not been able to win, so they are feeling the heat.
00:30:37But coming up on May 30th and 31st, tickets available for the New York City event.
00:30:42And this could be a hot team coming into that event, their home venue.
00:30:46Remember, only one stop in the States this year, and it's in the Big Apple.
00:30:50And here we go, rolling into it.
00:30:52That will be the Mubudla New York Sail Grand Prix on May 30th and 31st.
00:30:57So they make the turn, and this will be the last maneuver for U.S. Sail GP.
00:31:02And the fans on Shark Island with a front row seat.
00:31:04Yeah, and as we see that, well done here.
00:31:06What's interesting, right-hand side of screen, Spain.
00:31:10Tactically, I kind of like where they are.
00:31:12They're going to have the right of way when they meet Emirates GBR at the top here.
00:31:16Remember in Auckland, it was Emirates GBR that dived inside of the Spanish at the final mark.
00:31:21Opportunity to get a second place.
00:31:23And remember, it's a long, long season.
00:31:25Every point matters, and Los Gaios will be desperate to get back to that grand final in Abu Dhabi at
00:31:30the end of the year.
00:31:31But what a result for the U.S. Sail GP team. Let's let them enjoy it.
00:31:37Well, speaking Spanish on board.
00:31:41There you go. It might seem premature celebrations, but when you're that far ahead, you may as well enjoy it.
00:31:48So not the breezy of days here in the Harbour City, but the KPMG Sydney Sail Grand Prix
00:31:54will go the way of the Stars and Stripes.
00:31:57It is the U.S. Sail GP team that will cross the line, and they will take top honours and
00:32:03the Emirates winning moment as they claim victory here in Sydney.
00:32:08Yeah, that was a solid day, because that was a tough, tough day.
00:32:12I think, you know, I'd be interested to talk to the team afterwards, but I think Hans Henken, when he
00:32:18got them up on the foils off that start line.
00:32:21Oh, I mean, that was the moment right there. That was silky work to get flying then.
00:32:26That was a gold medal flex for Sail GP fans, especially for the Americans, as they claim the victory here
00:32:33in Sydney.
00:32:38Here we go. Spain have got the right of way here as we come into this circle.
00:32:41Heard easy cross from Stuart Biffle there. Doesn't look that easy to me, but they are going nearly five kilometres
00:32:46an hour quicker.
00:32:47Have I got one? Please?
00:32:49He's got to be sure he's ahead. Really tight. Right of way, Spain, but Emirates GBR, if they can squeak
00:32:55round the front...
00:32:56That's a clue down as we come, yeah. Yeah, he's made it. There you go.
00:32:58Emirates GBR will get second, and that was tight for a moment. It closed right up, but Dylan and Co
00:33:03are going to get it done.
00:33:04That's when we're in.
00:33:06Well, what's amazing about Sail GP in Season 6, Hannah Diamond, is you look at the parity.
00:33:11The first event went the way of the defending champions, Emirates GBR, as they defend their title from the year
00:33:15before with a victory in Perth.
00:33:17First stop for Sail GP, and then the second event in Auckland, the big collision between France and New Zealand.
00:33:23That win goes to the Bonds Flying Roos, and here in Sydney, Australia, it's US Sail GP.
00:33:28So three events, three different winners.
00:33:30Yeah, it's really shaping up to be a great season with so many boats able to take a win at
00:33:34each event,
00:33:35but it's all about being consistent across the season, like you say, if you want any chance of reaching that
00:33:39grand final,
00:33:40where it all counts at the end of the year.
00:33:42Yeah, and we're leaving this sort of, I don't know, almost call it the first leg of the tour,
00:33:46the down under section here, we're going to move across to the Americas next.
00:33:50And, yeah, I mean, Emirates GBR, all right, they finished second here, but they first, second, second.
00:33:54I mean, consistently in terms of the race, the final, wow.
00:33:58They look pretty, pretty solid on that boat.
00:34:01Well, it wasn't a win, but second place, and that'll be great season points for Emirates GBR,
00:34:06as they continue to defend their title from Season 5.
00:34:08A good performance from Spain.
00:34:10Hannah Diamond, we talked about it during practice on Friday.
00:34:12They look just, they look solid.
00:34:14And while they would want the win, finishing the top three, again, more season points.
00:34:20And we are one minute away from the start of the final here at the Enel Rio Sale Grand Prix,
00:34:25part of the Rolex Sale GP Championship.
00:34:27A picture-perfect day with an iconic setting, Sugarloaf Mountain in the background,
00:34:32and the three best teams on the weekend.
00:34:34The Bonds Flying Roos, Los Gios of Spain and Artemis, set to do battle.
00:34:3841 seconds to go, and we can see Artemis are already winding it up at the top end there,
00:34:43all off to the right-hand side of our screen.
00:34:45They have all got a big run-up, but they're going to be needing to get the acceleration right.
00:34:49I think Australia could almost be late already.
00:34:51They're going to need a perfect manoeuvre and a quick up on the foils.
00:34:54Artemis look like they will be inside.
00:34:56Middle of the screen's the line.
00:34:58Middle of the start line is the favoured place to be.
00:35:00Look how gusty it is under Sugarloaf as Slingsby starts to line it up.
00:35:04He's looking fast on board the Bonds Flying Roos.
00:35:07The Rolex Pole Predictor sits on board that Australian boat.
00:35:10Spain have space.
00:35:11Alteridge and Slingsby are fighting.
00:35:13The line's going to go white when we're ready to race.
00:35:16Oh, he lines it up.
00:35:17How's your timing, Nathan Alteridge?
00:35:21Wobble on board the Spanish boat at the top of the line.
00:35:24Artemis got slow, and it's the Bonds Flying Roos will lead at mark one.
00:35:31And here comes Spain on the outside.
00:35:34They've got speed almost dead even across the line as they approach mark number one.
00:35:39It's NASCAR on water here in Brazil.
00:35:41Yeah, oh, could be crucial.
00:35:42The Bonds Flying Roos catch the windward hull if Artemis can overlap.
00:35:46No, they're not.
00:35:47He's bailing out there.
00:35:48Outridge doesn't think he can dive inside.
00:35:50The Bonds Flying Roos.
00:35:51They're going to get first pick at this race course.
00:35:55Yeah, definitely got off the line well.
00:35:56But it feels like there's going to be a lot on this race, doesn't it?
00:35:58One thing's for sure, there'll be plenty of opportunities.
00:36:03I'm sure Spain will just be keeping it tight and keeping it back.
00:36:06Yeah, on the day that is the final round of the Masters.
00:36:09I can't help but think that there is a lot of golf left in this hole in terms of this
00:36:12race course.
00:36:13It's really, really tricky out there.
00:36:15Angle there.
00:36:16Okay, reloading here.
00:36:17So first to maneuver, the Bonds Flying Roos and Artemis.
00:36:20They go one and two.
00:36:21Keep your eye on Los Gallos, Spain.
00:36:22They currently sit in third place, opting to carry this one a little farther out.
00:36:26As we look at the conditions, Stevie, you see pressure all across this course.
00:36:29But as we've seen in the prior three races, there are holes out there.
00:36:32Yeah, there's a lot of opportunity.
00:36:34I think we'll hear from Tom Singsby.
00:36:35What's the distance he's hoping to find at the bottom of the course?
00:36:38I think a move back to the right turn does put you in good wind.
00:36:41The left-hand side of our screen has historically been the place to go.
00:36:46Singsby says there's good pressure left.
00:36:48It's a raven.
00:36:50Tricky decision right now.
00:36:52You've got a pick of it.
00:36:53Left turn.
00:36:54Copy.
00:36:54Left turn.
00:36:55I think if you're not certain of anything, he's going to sail into that big gust of wind.
00:36:59You don't do another manoeuvre.
00:37:01So you guarantee not losing a certain amount of meterage.
00:37:04Really good gusts here.
00:37:05Keep it simple.
00:37:07It's definitely the way to play.
00:37:08You know, if you think everything's even, you think you're going to good pressure,
00:37:11you might as well keep going straight.
00:37:12Look at this.
00:37:13Banished have taken on the other side.
00:37:15They're up on the inside of us.
00:37:16So it's the Australians and Artemis one and two.
00:37:19And Diego Botin's going to roll the dice here.
00:37:21Pete, you like this call?
00:37:23I think he takes a bit of a loss initially to do it.
00:37:26So yeah, it'll have to be interesting to see how much it pays out.
00:37:29But yeah, traditionally today that left hand side on the upwind has really been gaining a lot.
00:37:33So I think if, I mean he has to do something right.
00:37:36It's worth a roll of the dice I think for me here really.
00:37:39And like you say, on average it's been good that way.
00:37:41I think the interesting thing will be can the boats that have headed off on that side.
00:37:44Australia are up and foiling.
00:37:45So they've stayed in breeze.
00:37:46Artemis are in very good breeze on that right hand side of our course there.
00:37:50Look at this.
00:37:50Sweden, they've got the most wind on the racetrack right now.
00:37:53So potentially the wind coming the other side of Sugarloaf here, Ham.
00:37:57Yeah, I mean you can see the angle difference between the two boats.
00:37:59Bond's Flying Rouge just coming up and turning to the right a little bit there.
00:38:02But I think the Spanish may have made a little bit of a gain.
00:38:04Probably not enough to change the, oh I don't know actually.
00:38:07They're looking like they're going bow forwards there just a little bit as they approach that left hand boundary.
00:38:11Looks so patchy out there.
00:38:13I don't know if we've got Lisa at the moment.
00:38:14But the breeze looks like it's potentially started to come from the right hand side of Sugarloaf.
00:38:19So we're going to just see now gain for Artemis.
00:38:21The wind whisperer is reading it right at the moment.
00:38:26So there's the condition right now.
00:38:28There's not much more of a more beautiful setting than this here.
00:38:31The fourth event of the SailGP Season 6, the Enel Rio Sail Grand Prix.
00:38:35And it is all on here in the event final.
00:38:37It is Artemis, it is Australia, and it is Spain as we check in down on the water.
00:38:41Lisa Darmannan, where is the favourable side?
00:38:43Where do you find the pressure?
00:38:46Oh, the pressure is so high.
00:38:48As you said, there are these little right opportunities coming.
00:38:51We're sitting on the right hand turn at the moment.
00:38:53There's a big gust.
00:38:54But, you know, if you're 50 metres away from another boat,
00:38:57you could be in completely different pressure.
00:38:59So this race is not going to be over till it's over.
00:39:01It is really challenging out here.
00:39:03It still comes down to the basics as well.
00:39:06Artemis, they had a little bit of a wobble.
00:39:07They almost tried to force the foil.
00:39:09They fell off the foils.
00:39:10There you go.
00:39:11Slingsby didn't make that mistake.
00:39:13What a moment.
00:39:14And it was just come down to handling.
00:39:15Have the Bonds Flying Roos got the ability to stay on the foils here?
00:39:23Right now, the Bonds Flying Roos put themselves in first position.
00:39:26Looks like Nathan Aldridge is going to offer the other side.
00:39:29100%.
00:39:30Looks good as well, though, Todd, doesn't it?
00:39:32It's good breeze for Bonds Flying Roos.
00:39:33But the Los Gaios are foiling here.
00:39:35So Artemis are going to potentially get bounced around a bit.
00:39:37Right of way with Los Gaios.
00:39:39Spain will go back that way.
00:39:40They've got to keep rolling the dice.
00:39:42Artemis here.
00:39:42They haven't got the right of way.
00:39:45Protest, Simo.
00:39:46There you go.
00:39:47Diego did the commentary for us.
00:39:48For me, that's an absolute no-brainer foul there.
00:39:51The Artemis crew will have to...
00:39:52This is the umpires.
00:39:53Yeah.
00:39:53Penalty speed in Sweden.
00:39:55Not giving Mark room.
00:39:56Go behind Spain.
00:39:58A shot at the Emirates umpire studio there.
00:40:01Craig Mitchell, the chief umpire, doling out the penalty to Artemis.
00:40:03That's going to about do them in.
00:40:05And that's great news, Pete.
00:40:06I've got to think, for the Bonds Flying Roos and Tom Slingsby.
00:40:09Yeah, I think that definitely gives Bonds Flying Roos and Tom
00:40:12and the rest of the crew a good little buffer there, doesn't it?
00:40:14By the time Sweden has to get behind Spain.
00:40:16Hey, good gust here.
00:40:16Let's get going here.
00:40:18It's starting to look like a reasonably easy race for them from here.
00:40:22Touch wood.
00:40:23First time of the weekend that Tom Slingsby and Craig Mitchell have agreed?
00:40:26Could be.
00:40:27Could be.
00:40:28Well, it doesn't make up for not winning their home event in Sydney, Australia
00:40:31a few weeks ago where they did not even make the final.
00:40:34They finished in fifth.
00:40:34But this would be a huge win for them.
00:40:36Remember, the Bonds Flying Roos finished on top at event number two back in Auckland.
00:40:41and that seems a long time ago.
00:40:42But Tom Slingsby getting that team possibly back to their winning ways
00:40:46if they can bring this home.
00:40:48Is there a case that you can be too far ahead in this condition?
00:40:51Um.
00:40:52Happy to roll?
00:40:53I don't think so.
00:40:54I don't think so.
00:40:55I mean, you know, sometimes you say that where you get like really big lulls
00:41:00and you can get two bigger splits but, you know, essentially the course is so short
00:41:03you're having to go back and forth through the same bit of water
00:41:05so you can't really generate that much leverage.
00:41:07I mean, the further ahead the easier it's going to be, I think.
00:41:10We've got a little high mode across here, don't we?
00:41:12Yep.
00:41:12Happy to roll it up.
00:41:14And they all come with us.
00:41:15There you go, Neil.
00:41:16So I think right now, yeah, it looks like the Spanish have agreed with Peter Burley now.
00:41:19And they've said, let's just make sure we take a second.
00:41:21Think about the whole season.
00:41:22You want to remember we're racing to Abu Dhabi, aren't we?
00:41:24To that grand final.
00:41:25Every point counts all the way there.
00:41:27So mature sailing, I'd say, from Boatine.
00:41:30We heard Ian Jensen, wing trimmer on board Australia.
00:41:32This could be his first win on board that Australian boat.
00:41:35It'll be a massive moment.
00:41:36He's so proud to be back sailing for his home nation.
00:41:38If he can get a win here, I know for Gooby it's going to mean a lot.
00:41:41Leg five of seven, so it's up to the top of the course.
00:41:44They'll turn on the gate, come back down, and then it'll be a quick left-hander to the finish line
00:41:48in front of the crowds there in the beautiful setting that we've got here at the Nel Rio Sail Grand
00:41:54Prix.
00:41:55Looks super lightweight there at the moment, doesn't it?
00:41:58They're really just starting to keep it up on the foil.
00:42:00They'll go right down to 30 kph through that lull, so they need to play for it still to be
00:42:05honest.
00:42:07Looks like they're going to sort of make it simple.
00:42:09They're going to head towards that top left-hand corner of our screen.
00:42:11I've got a feeling they were trying to sort of sail an angle close to the gate
00:42:15to keep themselves well lined up then with the boats behind.
00:42:18But yeah, there's definitely opportunity out here, but I think the battle potentially now is for second place.
00:42:23It's going to need a big mistake by the Australians for it to go wrong from here.
00:42:27A single.
00:42:29That was pretty perfect.
00:42:30I'll tell you what, whatever the pep talk was that Tom Slingsby gave last night,
00:42:34how many cats they got on board, they have been doing something right,
00:42:37because they've got three wins in a row looking to make it four, Stevie,
00:42:40and winning the most important race of the eight.
00:42:43Yeah, I mean, it looks like a perfect tour card, isn't it?
00:42:46I mean, who would think it's possible to win four races on a day like this?
00:42:50I mean, quite incredible, really.
00:42:52But I say, I don't believe he's done anything magic.
00:42:54They've just done the basics really, really well,
00:42:56and that's really, really hard to do on a day like today.
00:43:04What a beautiful place to sail, eh?
00:43:06Just taking a little looking around the scenery under the Sugarloaf.
00:43:09Yeah, pretty fond memories for a lot of these yachties here in this part of water.
00:43:13So, hold that angle.
00:43:15So, there it is.
00:43:16Australia makes their way around the gate.
00:43:18They keep it clean.
00:43:19Here comes Spain sitting in second.
00:43:21Anyway, got pressure now.
00:43:23Straight into a jibe out of this.
00:43:24Sounds pretty calm.
00:43:25They've got wind back again.
00:43:26Oh, panic over for the Bonds Flying Roos.
00:43:28Step right there, rolling down.
00:43:29Your wind up.
00:43:30Go hard, Sammy.
00:43:34Celebrating just yet on board the Bonds Flying Roos.
00:43:37No, and it's a short leg though.
00:43:39Right-hand side of there's the mark they're going to,
00:43:41right-hand side of our screen.
00:43:42So, Slingsby's gone pretty nice and wide here.
00:43:44Made it fairly safe.
00:43:46Spade and Artemis, they follow.
00:43:48And it's all about getting on the foils for that race for second.
00:43:51But Tom Slingsby, Tom Slingsby and his cat,
00:43:53they're going to get it done here in Rio.
00:43:56So, four races in the 2026 season and two victories
00:44:00will go the way of the Bonds Flying Roos.
00:44:02Their new owners, Hugh Jackman, Ryan Reynolds,
00:44:05and they are just about 200 meters away from closing the deal.
00:44:08What a super Sunday for the Bonds Flying Roos,
00:44:11as they are absolutely perfect.
00:44:13They win races five, six, and seven.
00:44:16And when it counts most, they deliver in the event final.
00:44:20The Emirates winning moment goes the way of the Australians.
00:44:22The Bonds Flying Roos reigns supreme in Rio.
00:44:26Well done, guys.
00:44:29Good job, you always say that.
00:44:31Huge fight with that.
00:44:33Could be a Slingsby Samba in Rio tonight, Todd.
00:44:40Diego Botin smartly will hold on to second place,
00:44:43as that penalty really was the difference.
00:44:45and Los Gaios fresh off that new purchase of their team.
00:44:49They finish second, delivering nine championship points to their account.
00:44:53And Artemis gets into the final, the newest team in SailGP with Nathan Adler.
00:44:57They finish in third.
00:44:58All right, here we go.
00:44:5950 seconds to go before the line goes white.
00:45:02This is the event final of the Apex Group Bermuda Sail Grand Prix.
00:45:06Here in the great sound, the Rolex SailGP championship.
00:45:09It's Australia, it's Germany, and it's Spain.
00:45:12Los Gaios moved back here.
00:45:14They maneuver towards the line.
00:45:15We'll see.
00:45:15Well, they all shape up with 30 seconds to go.
00:45:17Deutsche Bank were the first ones to maneuver to the line.
00:45:20Spain wanted to have a bit of space.
00:45:22Now, there is going to be a tight start here.
00:45:23I quite like where the Bonds Flying Roos are.
00:45:26At the moment, the hunted of the Germans.
00:45:27They have the Rolex Pole Predicter on them,
00:45:29but I think they're there to be shot at.
00:45:31Australia and the Bonds Flying Roos are well positioned.
00:45:33Here come the Spanish.
00:45:34Big move by Bottin.
00:45:35He winds it up over the top.
00:45:3714 seconds to go.
00:45:38It's all about your timing now.
00:45:39Who's going to get that right?
00:45:41The Rolex Pole Predicter starts on the master, Tom Slinchby.
00:45:44He winds it up towards the line.
00:45:46Watch for them to turn it left.
00:45:47They all put the bow down.
00:45:49Speed's coming.
00:45:50Who's got it right?
00:45:52Beautiful by all three teams,
00:45:53but on the inside,
00:45:55I think it's going to be Tom Slingsby
00:45:56that's going to lead at Mark 1.
00:45:57He said it's going to be a boat speed race.
00:45:59Right, what have you got now, Los Gajos?
00:46:01Can you charge them down?
00:46:04The heavyweight bout continues.
00:46:06Australia and Spain going toe-to-toe as they approach Mark 1.
00:46:10And look at the Bonds Flying Roos.
00:46:12Plenty of room.
00:46:13Yeah, it's got a big lead here,
00:46:14but I think the big thing, the big race here,
00:46:18there is space.
00:46:19There is more clear air.
00:46:21Don't let the Australians just sail away.
00:46:23Stay with them.
00:46:25Wait for the mistake.
00:46:26Push.
00:46:26Keep making the right decision.
00:46:30The decision's going to be whether you race the boats
00:46:32or whether you race the course.
00:46:33I think Tom alluded to the fact that there's more open space here.
00:46:36But the choice for Los Gajos is going to be,
00:46:38do you put pressure by just staying close to them,
00:46:40or do you make a strategic decision and split away from them?
00:46:43Here it is.
00:46:44Spain's going to make the first move.
00:46:46Germany's going to go with them.
00:46:47Yeah, I think they'll all match here.
00:46:48I think the crucial one's going to be gate two.
00:46:50I think when they get to this next gate,
00:46:52Australia obviously will have the first pick.
00:46:54Right, so given you've got, you know,
00:46:55Tom Slingsby, Tash Bryant at the back of the boat,
00:46:57they're used to making good decisions.
00:46:58So they're going to have a look at where's the most wind,
00:47:00how do we sail the less distance?
00:47:02They'll make that choice.
00:47:03Now, if it's an obvious decision, Spain will have to follow.
00:47:06But if it's even, if it's 50-50,
00:47:08that'll be when you roll the dice on board the Spanish boat.
00:47:13As they approach gate number two, the DP World Gate,
00:47:16we check in down on the water with Lisa Darman.
00:47:18And Lisa, is this a race where one mistake
00:47:21is going to determine the winner?
00:47:24I think so.
00:47:25I mean, the Spanish and the Australians
00:47:27haven't made many mistakes all day.
00:47:29So I'm not sure we're going to see that being out in front as the key.
00:47:32But with the gate bias, that could save you 50-100 metres.
00:47:36So as the wind changes, you might be able to make little gains there.
00:47:39So that's what you should be looking out for.
00:47:41And Steve, are you surprised that everyone's opting for that lower gate?
00:47:44I mean, Spain and Germany are all going to follow the Australians.
00:47:47Well, no, because I think they would have looked at that
00:47:48and said it's definitely better to turn right.
00:47:51So you don't ever win anything by obviously doing the wrong thing.
00:47:55You've got to be relentless.
00:47:56Now, the Spanish here, this could be a mistake.
00:47:58They got a little slow.
00:47:59They waited a bit too long for that manoeuvre.
00:48:01If Australia stay foiling, this will be a massive gain.
00:48:05Magic number's 30.
00:48:07Can Waterhouse keep it up?
00:48:09Looks like he's going to keep it on the foils here.
00:48:11He's done it.
00:48:12Look at the different angles.
00:48:13Well, the Spanish have popped back on the foil quickly.
00:48:15Amazing work by Joel Rodriguez there, the flight controller.
00:48:19When they come back together, the Spanish will have the right of way.
00:48:22Spain are fast.
00:48:23They've got the hammer down, but the Aussies are back up to speed now.
00:48:26I think what we're seeing right at the moment is these top two boats have dropped the hammer.
00:48:30They're moving away.
00:48:31They're going fast.
00:48:32Look at how the boats are on top of them.
00:48:33They've got the windward hole close to the water.
00:48:36Wind is just a thing.
00:48:37Spain are almost looking like they're throwing a lot of manoeuvres at them earlier here, Hannah.
00:48:40Yeah, I think the thing that I've noticed is the difference between these two boats.
00:48:43The Spanish boat speed never drops quite as much as some of the others within the manoeuvre,
00:48:47but their top speed isn't quite as high as the Australians.
00:48:50So it's interesting to see how that plays out through the rest of the race.
00:48:56Well, now we've got a big split on, okay?
00:48:58So this is the first roll of the dice by the Spanish.
00:49:00Had they stayed with the Australians, then they'd have definitely been following into the next gate.
00:49:04Probably happened to sail in disturbed wind.
00:49:06So now it's a little bit on Mother Nature.
00:49:082, 1, board.
00:49:12Easy leg.
00:49:12It's just so smooth the way they operate.
00:49:15Jason Waterhouse, Tom Slingsby, Ian Jensen.
00:49:18Perfection.
00:49:18That was really slick, that manoeuvre.
00:49:20Look how much they've got the boat lent over so much.
00:49:23They're pushing for extra horsepower.
00:49:26Let's go down on the water.
00:49:28She's the closest to the action.
00:49:29Lisa Darmanin, what do you like?
00:49:31Look into your crystal ball.
00:49:32Who made the right call on that leg?
00:49:35Well, the Australians, they push wide early on,
00:49:37which means they're going to lay in and one here.
00:49:39And I think that they're going to make a huge gain.
00:49:41Whereas Los Gaios, they're going to want to turn left because that's the bias.
00:49:45But it's going to cost them a lot.
00:49:47It's a really tricky manoeuvre to pull off.
00:49:49See there, can't you, Hannah?
00:49:50It looks so much closer to the one the Australians going round.
00:49:53Yeah, that's right.
00:49:54And it's even harder to pull off that manoeuvre that Los Gaios is going to have to do if they
00:49:57want to turn left.
00:49:58Because they've actually dropped one crew member since the last race.
00:50:00There's only five people on board.
00:50:02You lose one of the grinders, so you've got fewer options with the wing trimming.
00:50:05This is a desperation move by the Spanish here, Tom.
00:50:08They're doing definitely the wrong thing.
00:50:11It doesn't mean it won't work out if they get lucky and they get a gust of wind.
00:50:14But this is the roll of the dice.
00:50:16Because if they knew if they just stayed there, they're definitely going to be second, maybe third.
00:50:20This is a full roll of the dice by the Spanish.
00:50:23Have they found some magic?
00:50:25They're rocking her in.
00:50:26I'm alright.
00:50:28Yeah, happy to roll her still.
00:50:29Yeah, doesn't look great their way.
00:50:31Doesn't look amazing either.
00:50:33Ever the optimist, Tom.
00:50:37I don't know if you've ever watched Winnie the Pooh, but it's a bit like Eeyore being on the back
00:50:40of the boat, I think, in that moment.
00:50:42Debbie Downer?
00:50:43Yeah, well, come on, Tom.
00:50:44Look at that.
00:50:45Cheer up.
00:50:45Anyway.
00:50:46To Lisa's point, look at the gain.
00:50:47Yeah, huge.
00:50:48Massive gain there for the Bonds Flying Roos.
00:50:51200 meters.
00:50:51And now it's just a case of setting up for a nice right turn at the bottom, leading out that
00:50:55way.
00:50:56Keep the boat fast, and you're going to bring it home two in a row for the Australians, I'd say,
00:50:59from here.
00:51:00But mistakes can happen.
00:51:01They just don't tend to happen often on that Australian boat.
00:51:04And that's the view from Germany Deutsche Bank as they look to the rest of the field.
00:51:07We've battled now for second place, as the Bonds Flying Roos have nearly 200 meters on everyone else.
00:51:12But look how fast the Germans are coming in at 65, 66 kilometers an hour.
00:51:17Yeah, setting a fast angle to get behind.
00:51:19We're going to have a split at the bottom between those two, but it's really a race for second and
00:51:22third, I think, now, Anna.
00:51:23Yeah, it is, and that's really tightened up.
00:51:25I think we've seen a couple of times, Los Giles, they've taken that other gate option in finals, and it's
00:51:29done really well for them.
00:51:30But obviously, it wasn't to be this time.
00:51:35They don't often do well doing what is definitely wrong.
00:51:40Yeah, I think, especially on a course like this, where there are quite a lot of nodes, the breeze is
00:51:44shifting, it's changing a little bit, but not too much.
00:51:46There are definitely different racecourses where you'd be happier to take that chance.
00:51:51We know a little bit more about this course, and it was always going to be a bit of a
00:51:53punt from their part.
00:51:54So it's a 14-second lead as they went through the last gate for the Bonds Flying Roos, the winners
00:51:58of the last event looking to make it two for two.
00:52:02The manoeuvring is just good.
00:52:04They made a couple of sloppy errors in the last race, but again, see the tilt on the platform there?
00:52:09That's just showing quite how aggressively they're sailing on the boat, Jason Waterhouse, that we're in there.
00:52:14He's on the coffee grinders there, little movement forward with his right hand, little movement back.
00:52:17That's lift off the foil, lift on the foil, lift off, lift on.
00:52:20Constantly just adjusting, anticipating what the boat's going to do next.
00:52:23River crossing, copy. Sail at 48.
00:52:27Unbelievable, look at the dexterity on it.
00:52:29Letting it tick off.
00:52:33Coming right in now, coming right in now.
00:52:36Perfectly paved with the wind.
00:52:37They're just saying the wind's coming round towards that right hand side, so if we just sail out this way
00:52:42a little bit, we'll be able to manoeuvre, we'll minimise some distance,
00:52:44because the shift gives us less distance to sail, so they're perfectly lined up with the wind shifts.
00:52:49Ooh, tight crossing in the back, so the battle is now on for second place between Spain and Germany Deutsche
00:52:55Bank, and Germany Deutsche Bank coming on fast.
00:52:57Well, and if Australia are right, and the wind is turning to the right, that's good news for Germany, because
00:53:02they're heading where the Australians are, so potentially here the Germans are going to move themselves up to second.
00:53:08I don't know what Lisa Darmanin said to Tom Slingsby before that final race, but whatever she said, it put
00:53:12a B in his bum, and he is off and flying.
00:53:15Todd.
00:53:16Whatever this almanac that Ryan Reynolds found one event ago about sailing from 1856 or something like that, that's got
00:53:23some serious gold dust in it, because that has completely revolutionised it.
00:53:27Ben Durham, the coach, I think, sat ashore with that right now, reading out the details, because this Australian team
00:53:32just looks so, so good. Massive improvement in their performance.
00:53:37They must have found a load of cats in Rio and now in Bermuda, because right now it is all
00:53:41about the Bonds Flying Roos, and with a win here, this is going to give them a massive lead in
00:53:46the overall here, as event number five comes to a conclusion, and it will be the Bonds Flying Roos, this
00:53:52final manoeuvre here with one hole in the water, but plenty of time to burn.
00:53:56Right of way Germany, Spain are not quite in that circle, they would love to be in that circle to
00:54:01have the right of way, they've got to keep clear, Germany need to stay on the full, Spain manoeuvres in
00:54:05front, great positioning by Boteen, he's going to try, oh that is brilliant by Boteen, what a manoeuvre, glided it
00:54:12in front.
00:54:13But in the end, the Emirates winning moment for the second event in a row goes to the Bonds Flying
00:54:19Roos, the green and gold reigns supreme in Bermuda.
00:54:22What a result there, Spain did a good job for a second, but wow, the Bonds Flying Roos just on
00:54:29fire.
00:54:32And two, one, probably.
00:54:34Well, it's about what you thought, Stevie, as we were looking at practice at some of the numbers earlier this
00:54:38week, Spain looked fast, and you called it, they're going to be in the final,
00:54:42journey may be the biggest surprise, but a great learning experience for a team that continues to get better.
00:54:47Well, fantastic, two events in a row, getting better, brilliant news for Germany, Deutsche Bank.
00:54:51But in the end, no one could match the strength and the speed of the Bonds Flying Roos with their
00:54:57co-owner, Ryan Reynolds, here in Bermuda.
00:54:59It is the Australians that win the event.
00:55:04We look forward to that as we come up on one minute to go before the start of the event
00:55:08final.
00:55:10Special four, stand by.
00:55:11We have a look at that graphic. I think we know who the favorites are.
00:55:13Yeah.
00:55:15They've won a lot of these events. They've done 54 events and they've won 18 of them.
00:55:19I mean, they know how to win the Bonds Flying Roos.
00:55:22So here we go. This is the calm before the storm out on the Hudson.
00:55:27With 42 seconds to go, where do you want to be, Hannah Diamond?
00:55:30Where do you want to go?
00:55:31Well, I think this next part is going to be really crucial.
00:55:34That turn back to the line, how they accelerate.
00:55:36Looks like the Australians are taking an early turn back.
00:55:39They look to be in a controlled position at the moment.
00:55:41Yeah, North Star, they're out the back of the box at the moment.
00:55:44They're going to look to wind up and find a gap through.
00:55:46They'll be able to get foiling first, but can they find space?
00:55:49Slingsby's going to match that turn, I imagine, here.
00:55:51Australia have got to accelerate well.
00:55:53North Star not foiling.
00:55:54Campbell James says they're racing.
00:55:56If they're racing, they're already late on board the other teams.
00:55:59North Star are firing in here on the foil.
00:56:00Nine seconds to go.
00:56:01All the teams look late to me, but North Star right now are well positioned on the inside.
00:56:05Can Emirates GBR come in fast?
00:56:07I don't think so. They're going to be late.
00:56:10Oh, the Bonds Flying Roo crossed the line first.
00:56:13Brilliant start by Slingsby, but tactically the advantage with Scott.
00:56:16Can he control the situation?
00:56:17It looks like they're going to need to be really fast,
00:56:19because that Bonds Flying Roo boat has got more wind, better angle, and rolling over the top.
00:56:24The Bonds Flying Roos are going to lead again at Mark 1.
00:56:31Heard the British wanted to be up the line, so clearly it was a very fast angle from the upwind
00:56:35end of the line.
00:56:36Because Emirates GBR, they were late, but they've nearly rolled over the top of all the other teams here.
00:56:40At Mark 1 at the event final in New York City, it's the Bonds Flying Roo's out in front.
00:56:44Emirates GBR sits in second, and North Star Canada tucks into third.
00:56:48Standby.
00:56:51We've seen that left turn be pretty strong in the previous fleet races,
00:56:54so it'll be interesting to see if they all want that left turn,
00:56:57or if someone's happy to split away and take a bit more of a gamble.
00:57:01You've got to think, if you're in an Australian boat, you're going to take it.
00:57:04You've got to think Emirates GBR will follow, and you've got to think North Star will split and try and
00:57:07find more space.
00:57:08I imagine North Star are going to struggle to get down to it from where they are on the track,
00:57:12so expect to split down here, but the Bonds Flying Roo's.
00:57:15They've not been out front all event. Look up in the Oracle Cloud. They're not going badly there, are they?
00:57:2040 miles an hour, 65 kilometers an hour. They've got a boat speed advantage as they head into gate two.
00:57:31So as they approach the DP World Gate, gate number two, it is the Bonds Flying Roo's out in front.
00:57:36Emirates GBR sits in second as they spit it around in front of the fans on Governor's Island.
00:57:41Wow, Emirates GBR's poker face was pretty good there. He split at the last moment.
00:57:45It was too late for the Bonds Flying Roo's to be able to cover that off. We've got a split.
00:57:49Now it's about where is there more wind on the racetrack. Has Dylan Fletcher seen that little bit more wind
00:57:54that's going to send them up the race course faster?
00:57:56Your heel, your heel. Stand by.
00:58:01More down.
00:58:03There we go. The wind speed's pretty similar, but there's more wind on the Australians. So more wind should mean
00:58:08advantage slingspeak.
00:58:13It's a pretty big split across the course here, isn't it, Stevie? Those boats cannot control what's happening on the
00:58:19other side of the course.
00:58:19They know that they're going to have to sail as fast as possible and at the best angle to try
00:58:24and give themselves the best chance.
00:58:26I think what they know is on that first manoeuvre out of the bottom gate, if you go as wide
00:58:29as possible,
00:58:30you then open up the course tactically later on. So you're like, okay, I'm rolling the dice a little bit
00:58:34here,
00:58:34but that's going to give me a chance to control things further on. This is a big moment. Does Slingsby
00:58:39turn in front of Emirates GBR
00:58:40try and shut the door, or does he think he's going to find more wind wider?
00:58:46Let the door open for the British here. Oh, that's a big moment. All going to depend on if they
00:58:52can make the next gate.
00:58:55I was surprised there, Hannah. I thought Slingsby might have tried to shut the door on Emirates GBR then.
00:58:59Yeah, it's a bit of a strange position to manoeuvre there. I wonder if they, yeah, so they are quite
00:59:05far kind of up the course.
00:59:06They will be able to make that right turn, but to me, they've gone too far.
00:59:11Emirates GBR look like they're going to make it as well. So Slingsby could have turned sooner.
00:59:15Could have shut the door maybe on the British there. Fletcher's found a way through.
00:59:19So here we go. It's Emirates GBR. They will opt for that right-hand side.
00:59:23The Bonds Flying Roos yield first place to the Brits. So it's Emirates GBR in first.
00:59:27The Bonds Flying Roos of Australia in second. Here comes Northstar Canada.
00:59:31Looks like they are going to split the course.
00:59:34They are, but they've got really slow. They've fallen off the foil.
00:59:37So they're losing a lot of distance here, the Canadian boat.
00:59:39The race for the wind here is between Australia and Great Britain.
00:59:42We've said that a few times before, but on that upwind leg, I'm not sure if it was more wind.
00:59:46I think it was just that the British managed to minimise manoeuvres.
00:59:49They got all the way to the boundary early, got to the next gate with no more manoeuvres, and that's
00:59:53turned into a 50, 60 metre lead.
00:59:55Wow, you talk about what Lisa said, it's kind of patchy out there. The Canadians, excuse me, sailed into a
01:00:00pocket of no wind.
01:00:01Now it's picking back up as they are approaching 60 kilometres an hour, but look at the loss.
01:00:05200 metres to the Bonds Flying Roos, and it is Emirates GBR with about an 80 metre lead.
01:00:11Yeah, I think for Northstar it's going to rely on something unthinkable between those first two boats, really, to get
01:00:16themselves back in it.
01:00:18Fletcher made a game by going right at the bottom last time. What does he do here? Looks like he's
01:00:22going to have to go left.
01:00:25And copy black, and two, and board.
01:00:28What do you reckon, Hannah? Right turn for Australia?
01:00:31Well, they're going to have to do two manoeuvres to get down there, but it's a long way to that
01:00:35left turn from where they are now.
01:00:38That's a complex manoeuvre, but they've done a lot of time in the boats, the Bonds Flying Roos. The team
01:00:42that can execute that, beautifully done.
01:00:45Maybe a slight gain to the Australians on that downwind, but now it's all about, is it a gain to
01:00:50Australia?
01:00:50That's where the British made a gain last time. So Australia's going back to the favoured sides of the course.
01:00:55Can they make it work for them?
01:00:56So Stevie, strategically, with the Bonds Flying Roos and Tom Slingsby, do what Dylan Fletcher did, and stretch this thing
01:01:01all the way out to the boundary.
01:01:02I think he's got to try and get there in one, and then he'll assess how he's coming back together
01:01:06with the British.
01:01:07Here we go. If he thinks he's ahead, he'll sail a normal angle. If he thinks he's behind, he'll aim
01:01:10at them, he'll go fast, and he'll try and give them that same difficult decision.
01:01:14There you go, Tatch Bryan. She says we've got to go behind. Right of way, Emirates GBR.
01:01:21It's a gain to them on the left-hand side, though, isn't it?
01:01:23Big game, but I don't know with this dip that they're having to do whether they'll be able to make
01:01:27it to the top gate now.
01:01:28I think they'll have to do another manoeuvre. Emirates GBR will be one more manoeuvre to get there.
01:01:32Dylan Fletcher not making it easy for Tom Slingsby, and Slingsby turns back into it.
01:01:36So look at the speeds on top of the match. It's 50 for Emirates GBR, 44 right now for the
01:01:41Bonds Flying Roos.
01:01:41And what's interesting about this, Stevie, the last time Emirates GBR won an event, you have to go back to
01:01:45event one that started the season in Perth.
01:01:47They haven't won since then. Meanwhile, the Bonds Flying Roos are trying to make it three in a row.
01:01:51Yeah, I mean, the Bonds Flying Roos have been almost unplayable, haven't they?
01:01:54But we knew Fletcher would be back. He's got that kind of quality.
01:01:57But they'll be desperate to take a wind here. Looks like a big angle change.
01:02:00Look at that wind shift on the Australians. They're sailing nearly straight up the ladders.
01:02:03That's going to be making big, big gains, but they're going to be going slower for doing it.
01:02:07It's going to get softer at the top.
01:02:09It's going to get softer. It's going to get less wind. Less wind means it's less easy to make that
01:02:15game.
01:02:16Let's go down on the water. Lisa Darman on leg five of seven. Did the Bonds Flying Roos make the
01:02:20right call?
01:02:21Mark's moving.
01:02:23Oh, it's so hard. I think it was tough that they had to do that evasive maneuver and avoid the
01:02:28British.
01:02:28The British, they're coming in so fast at the moment. So even if the Australians make this turn, the British,
01:02:33they could slingshot around.
01:02:35But it actually looks like the Aussies might do it here.
01:02:38They fear the happiness in that voice there. Exactly.
01:02:41I think it was incredible there. They got under 30 kilometers an hour.
01:02:44But Jason Walthouse managed to keep it on the foil. So the rebuild's not been too much. Advantage Australia.
01:02:50But here we go. Both of them almost identical on speed as they will make their way down as they've
01:02:55cleared gate five.
01:02:56Dylan Fletcher, the first one to turn away, trying to send a disturbed wind the way of the Bonds Flying
01:03:01Roos.
01:03:02Meanwhile, Canada out the back. And this is a battle for first and second. This is a battle for supremacy
01:03:07in SailGP Season 6.
01:03:09It's a better maneuver by the British. Gain, he's going to try and get onto the wind of the Australians.
01:03:15If he can move forward a little bit, he'll put disturbed wind onto that Australian boat.
01:03:19Less wind means less speed. But right now, just clear in the wind ahead.
01:03:23The wind's coming from slightly in front of the British boat here as they're going so fast downwind.
01:03:27Australia, he's losing out, but he's got control tactically. The British cannot maneuver from there.
01:03:32How about this? We come down to the penultimate leg. Leg six of seven. And it's man on man.
01:03:38It's Australia versus Great Britain. These are the two heavyweights in Season 6.
01:03:42Can Tom Slingsby get it done? It's going to come down to this last maneuver.
01:03:46Ainsley knows it's difficult for Dylan from here. The Australians tactically got perfect control.
01:03:50Oh, Slingsby. Wow, he was braised. Oh, he's not allowed to do that.
01:03:53Oh, he's coming close. That'll be a protest. He's forced the issue there.
01:03:58Surely that's a foul by Emirates GBR. It's going to go to the umpires, but it's first up on the
01:04:02foils.
01:04:02The bonds flying ruse. They've got the rights on the inside. Emirates must give them space.
01:04:09They're overlapping. The Australians have got to keep clear. Oh, this is going to go to the umpires.
01:04:14Oh, my. This is all about how Craig Mitchell saw those two incidents.
01:04:17And the Emirates winning moment for the time being goes the way of the bonds flying ruse.
01:04:22They make it three for three. I've just heard from chief umpire Craig Mitchell, no penalty on either.
01:04:29Oh, my word. Wow. We often talk about the racing rules getting to the grey.
01:04:33That was really tight racing. Brilliant action here in New York. What a finish.
01:04:38Awesome today, mate. Good job, Sam.
01:04:40Tightest finish we've seen all year long. And in the end, it is the bonds flying ruse that reigns supreme
01:04:47in New York City.
01:04:48And one team. Craig the New York curse.
01:04:50Hannah, with four boats, doesn't really change the dynamic a whole lot. A little tighter at the start.
01:04:54Where do you want to be, especially knowing these characters that you're lined up against?
01:04:57Well, I think we've seen that the leg to mark one could be pretty long. So you've got to not
01:05:02only be fast at the gun,
01:05:03but you've also got to be sailing the optimal angle. So we'll have to see where that is dependent on
01:05:07the shift.
01:05:08But with four boats, it is going to be a different dynamic.
01:05:11And we'll keep our eye on the wind as Lisa Darmann has been recording throughout the day.
01:05:14The wind is dropping off there. You see the wind lines there.
01:05:17As they see the direction and the strength. So it will be the bonds flying ruse that go to the
01:05:22very back of the start box.
01:05:24Switzerland turns in front of them. There's Artemis. They turn in front of them as well.
01:05:27So it's already getting a little messy, Stevie. And here comes Spain.
01:05:30Yeah, those two boats, bottom right and corner together, are going to be potentially slowing each other up.
01:05:34Interesting fact, we saw it on that graphic before. Australia, they've won a lot of events.
01:05:38Spain have won a lot of events. The Swiss and the Swedish have never won an event in SailGP.
01:05:43Let's keep that in mind as we watch things as the Rolex Pole Predictor sits on top of the Swiss
01:05:47boat at the top of the line.
01:05:48Middle of the line is the favoured place to be. I like where Artemis is right now.
01:05:51It's all going to be about the wind up and the strike though from here as we see Los Gaios
01:05:56dive below Artemis.
01:05:57They come in fast. Great position for Botin. And now we're looking for the line to turn right.
01:06:02It's going to be blanket start. Oh, taken. Look at it. That's why they paid the big bucks as they
01:06:08come out of the line.
01:06:09Blazing towards Mark 1. Fastest angle for the Swiss. Tactical advantage to the Australians.
01:06:14But I think the Spanish are perfectly positioned to lead at Mark 1.
01:06:20And you couldn't have dialed it up any better. Four wide as they approach Mark 1.
01:06:25This is the event final here in Halifax. Four boats competing for top honours.
01:06:31It's tight on the overlap. I think that the Spanish are still just about in control at Mark 1. Just...
01:06:37Oh, that was brilliant there. So now big advantage to the Spanish. They're lining things up down the course.
01:06:42But you've got to execute this first manoeuvre Artemis. They spin away. Got to make something happen. Roll the dice
01:06:47time.
01:06:48Rolex sprint leader Diego Botin. Accurate manoeuvres. Look at the breeze on the shoreline.
01:06:52Lovely gust of wind where the Spanish are right now.
01:06:55Vamos. I understand that. Let's go, guys.
01:06:59Look at that breeze holding 20 kilometres. Just dipping below across the course. Explorer Swiss as we go on board.
01:07:08Doing a great job making it to the final. They've never won an event. Is today the day for Sebastian
01:07:12Snyder and his crew?
01:07:14They've done a nice job. They've set an extra breeze down the boundary. I suspect we probably look for most
01:07:19teams to take that right turn if they can.
01:07:21So Spain in the box seat. Explorer Swiss. Well, they shut down the second. I like the angle where Spain
01:07:26are. Should be able to do a fast exit from here and now.
01:07:29Are you patient on Artemis or do you split? I think you've got to be patient. It looks like a
01:07:34big bias to the right turn at the bottom here.
01:07:37So as they reach gate number two, the DP world gate here in the event final. It is Spain out
01:07:42in front. Explorer Swiss comes in second.
01:07:44The Bondsline rules in third. And Artemis, the rookie team, they sit in fourth.
01:07:48They're going to spin it on the mark, I think, Todd. They're going to go for a turn straight round
01:07:51here. Had a tricky manoeuvre there.
01:07:54Yeah, really hard to pull off, but it looks like they've done it really nicely. I think if you're at
01:07:57the back, you want an open course. You want options.
01:07:59Because if you're at the front, like most bias, you're really happy to see everyone following behind you.
01:08:04Interesting. Because they did it right on the mark, they were over speed for a tricky manoeuvre. And it's not
01:08:10easy foiling manoeuvres out there.
01:08:12So actually Artemis have gained a lot because, look, you see the Swiss manoeuvre on the side, but they fall
01:08:16off the foils.
01:08:17Clever, clever sailing for the Swedish team there. Nice gain. Lisa, that was pretty clever by Artemis. Where do you
01:08:23see the breeze right now?
01:08:26Yeah, it's not so much where the breeze is, but it looks like the angle is what's sort of hurting
01:08:30everyone that didn't do that manoeuvre.
01:08:32So Artemis, everyone else is sort of pointing towards the back of Artemis. So I'm expecting them to sail around
01:08:37the bow.
01:08:37So big move by Nathan there. But what we're seeing is that the top of the course is very different
01:08:43to the bottom of the course.
01:08:44So as they, the next couple of minutes, I think that right hand side where they're going is really going
01:08:48to start to pay.
01:08:49All right, let's see if Lisa is the proverbial Nostradamus in Halifax right now, as Artemis makes the turn. Look
01:08:56what's waiting for him.
01:08:57There is Spain right there. They'll dip behind. It is still the Spanish out in front. Artemis now inherits second
01:09:02place.
01:09:03Here comes the Bondsline ruse as Switzerland has to dip behind them.
01:09:07Brilliant by the Spanish. They, you know, they might not have been perfect at the bottom gate, but they've got
01:09:12themselves right back in Spain.
01:09:13I've got to be careful. If the Swedish team can get alongside, it will be right of way then. But
01:09:18the Spanish have gapped off.
01:09:19They're nearly seven kilometres an hour slower, though. This one's going to be tight.
01:09:24Do you think about the Swiss team anymore as those top three, Hannah? Or have they got themselves out of
01:09:28the battle?
01:09:28Different sort of thought process with four boats.
01:09:31Yeah, I think it is a different thought process. But I think the thing is with these three boats is
01:09:35they are in phase with the shift and the pressure.
01:09:37So they'll be pretty confident that the Swiss are not in phase. So they should be gaining on the Swiss
01:09:42all of the time.
01:09:43I think if these three boats find themselves out of phase, then it's a slightly different conversation.
01:09:47Here there, Diego, asking Nicole, tell me when they set up. So she's already gone to the other side of
01:09:51the boat.
01:09:52She's watching for some of the Swedish and some of the Australian sailors cross the boat. Brilliant manoeuvre by the
01:09:57Swedish.
01:09:58They make it ahead. And if things be going to keep this amazing run, he's been on alive. He's got
01:10:03to make something happen soon here.
01:10:04I suspect all the teams will follow each other right now and wait for the next mistake to play out.
01:10:09One, down, faster, and hit it.
01:10:15Careful, can't, Joey. Front edge, no?
01:10:19So on big leg, number four of seven here in the event final.
01:10:22Los Giles still with the lead. Artemis sits in second. Here comes the bonds flying roos.
01:10:27Spain lead the manoeuvre there. That's an interesting call here.
01:10:31Better press it the other way. You're all right.
01:10:33So they all like there's more wind in towards the fans on the shoreline is what Slingsby's suggesting.
01:10:38So I think there's a bit of a roll of the dice for Australia right now.
01:10:41That's 20 boundary.
01:10:43See Slingsby looking around. He's not sure of this call.
01:10:48Hannah, what's he looking for? Tom Slingsby's got his head on a swivel.
01:10:52Yeah, that's right. The breeze is really changeable. We know that it's dropping.
01:10:56They've split slightly and at the moment it doesn't look like it's the right decision.
01:10:59So they'll have to wait a little bit and see.
01:11:01They'll definitely be disappointed to be in third at the moment.
01:11:04And I think probably just keeping pressure on Artemis would have been the thing to do there.
01:11:08I think because the Spanish, the one advantage normally of leading is you can see things and make the first
01:11:13decision.
01:11:14The disadvantage of leading is you've got to make the decision.
01:11:17If you're in a sort of slower boat, slower moving things, you can often wait for the other people to
01:11:21make a call.
01:11:22Diego was very positive with his decision making there and that then closed all the options down for the Australians
01:11:28quickly.
01:11:28Another point coming here. Looks like there's less distance for the left turn.
01:11:32So again, potentially the Swedish team...
01:11:34Oh no, it looks like they're setting up onward Sweden.
01:11:36Outridge is potentially going to split the course here.
01:11:39Or look for an early manoeuvre as he did last time.
01:11:41Yeah, expect the Swedish to spin on the mark again.
01:11:44Right here and soft.
01:11:47Over speed, should be able to stay foiling.
01:11:51Yeah, there it is.
01:11:52I wouldn't say that, but it's one of the most complicated manoeuvres you can do in sailing.
01:11:56But it was brilliantly executed using that extra boat speed that they had and they're now foiling.
01:12:01Can Spain stay foiling? They're too slow on the numbers.
01:12:07Brilliant by the Swedish again and they're sailing back towards that side of the course.
01:12:10Lisa, what are you seeing? It's been good by the fans before.
01:12:13Is this the chance for Artemis?
01:12:17Yeah, Artemis are in a really strong position here.
01:12:20The pressure sort of moved down the course and strolled all the way to the shore.
01:12:24So I think that the Spanish have a bit on here with just a couple of manoeuvres left.
01:12:29So we're on leg five of seven.
01:12:31It is Artemis that has now moved, not quite in the lead, but as Lisa pointed out, a strong position.
01:12:37They have never won in sail GP before.
01:12:39Their driver, Nathan Outridge, very experienced, but can Los Gallos get their first win of season six?
01:12:45The champions in season four trying to desperately hold on to this first place position.
01:12:50Yeah, and they've managed to keep themselves out of phase.
01:12:52You want to be going the opposite direction to the boat ahead.
01:12:54If he'd waited longer, it would have been an easy decision for the Spanish to make.
01:12:57It's aggressive from the Artemis team here, and they're in a good breeze.
01:13:01You see it's quite a dark patch of water there.
01:13:04So Spain still have a good lead.
01:13:06One manoeuvre ahead is Artemis, but when they meet each other next time, if it's close, if it's close, Sweden
01:13:15will have the right of way.
01:13:16Look at the speed on tour of Sweet's Bass there at 50 kilometres an hour.
01:13:20Spain has dropped down to 38.
01:13:22It just takes so long to build speed out the manoeuvres with these big foils.
01:13:27Looking a little bit better for Artemis just now.
01:13:29Theoretical ladder lines are that way.
01:13:31Favouring.
01:13:32Still going 10 km south fast.
01:13:33There's just got to be more breeze where Artemis is at the moment.
01:13:36The wind whisperer.
01:13:37Seems like he's whispering.
01:13:40There you go.
01:13:41If they stick this manoeuvre.
01:13:44Oh, can they stay foiling?
01:13:46It's going to be close.
01:13:47Spanish set up, Spanish set up.
01:13:51Artemis are ahead on paper.
01:13:53They're ahead on paper at the moment.
01:13:55The Bonds flying roos are out the back.
01:13:56They've lost a lot here.
01:13:57What do you do on board Artemis?
01:13:59I think it's a right turn favoured.
01:14:02Spain will do the opposite to the Swedish, I would suggest.
01:14:07Here we go.
01:14:09Well, it's going to come down to where there's more wind.
01:14:11They're going to be absolutely neck and neck at the top of the course.
01:14:15Two more manoeuvres to do for Spain.
01:14:16One more for Artemis.
01:14:17Who finds more breeze on the downward leg?
01:14:20Can Artemis win their first ever race in SailGP?
01:14:23Or will Spain win their first of the 2026 season,
01:14:27the champions of season four?
01:14:29They've been in a bit of a drought.
01:14:30They've been in some finals, but they are looking for the win.
01:14:32Yeah, there's the Oracle Cloud, Hannah.
01:14:33It looks like a little bit more wind on the Swedish,
01:14:36but Spain look like they've got a good angle.
01:14:38It's potentially a gain to the Spanish at the moment.
01:14:40Yeah, they did have an extra manoeuvres to do,
01:14:42but it looks like they've pulled that off quite painlessly,
01:14:43and it's going to be really close here.
01:14:45As soon as you get downwind, the manoeuvres aren't as painful yet.
01:14:48Spain have got it right.
01:14:50Oh, what a call by Bottin at the top of the course there.
01:14:53Here we go.
01:14:54Leg six of seven.
01:14:55It's a right-hand turn, and then a championship is wind distance.
01:14:58Here comes Nathan Outridge and Artemis.
01:14:59They're speeding on.
01:15:00Here's the manoeuvre of the match.
01:15:02Can Diego Bottin and his crew pull off?
01:15:04They stay up on the foils, and it's a right-hand turn,
01:15:07and a drag race to a win.
01:15:09Two, one, up.
01:15:10Spain are nearly matching speed, I think, with Artemis now.
01:15:12If Artemis have got to try and dive outside and look to overlap.
01:15:17Disturb winged onto the Swedish right now.
01:15:19The Swedish should be getting slowed by the Spanish,
01:15:21and it's controlled to Los Gallos.
01:15:22as they come to the finish line.
01:15:25Vamos, Los Gallos.
01:15:27They will claim the victory and take the win in Halifax.
01:15:32Oh, what a race.
01:15:34I've got to say, the last two races today were absolutely incredible.
01:15:39Both of them involving this Spanish team.
01:15:42They've been in third twice.
01:15:44They've been in second twice, but their first win comes in Canada
01:15:48as they get it done in Event 7.
01:15:50And how about this?
01:15:51Explorer Swiss said, you know what?
01:15:52We want to be on the podium.
01:15:54Explorer Swiss will hold on for third place
01:15:57as they get around the Bonds Flying Roos.
01:15:59Great work by Sebastian Snyder.
01:16:00And Tom Slingsby's run of victories, three in a row,
01:16:03comes to an end as the Bonds Flying Roos will finish in fourth.
01:16:07Yeah, but he still extended his lead in that race to Abu Dhabi.
01:16:10And I think for Artemis, second, they'll be gutted.
01:16:13They just currently got their nose ahead in theory,
01:16:16but they were tactically a little bit out of position in that race.
01:16:19But in their race to Abu Dhabi, massive weekend for Artemis.
01:16:24Let's go!
