00:0012 international teams lined up on the water in Guanabara Bay
00:03in the shadows of Sugarloaf Mountain.
00:04But when it came to Super Sunday, there was one dominant performance.
00:09Rio sets the tempo, and SailGP turns up the pace.
00:13For the first time, the world's fastest racing league arrives on Guanabara Bay.
00:18Perfect by Outridge.
00:20Canfield is the master on the start.
00:22High-speed action and high tension.
00:25That is so ridiculous.
00:26In one of the world's most electric cities,
00:28Martini Grail and her Wabudla Brazil SailGP team
00:32want to put on a show for their home crowd.
00:35World-class racing.
00:36Pure Rio rhythm.
00:41And we welcome you to our recap of the Enel Rio Sail Grand Prix.
00:45Alongside Stevie Morrison, Hannah Diamond, and Pete Burling, I'm Todd Harris.
00:49Glad to have you with us as we recap not only the seven fleet races,
00:52but an amazing event final with the top three boats.
00:54Stevie, your takeaway from the first seven races,
00:56because Saturday was much different than Sunday.
00:58Yeah, just how much opportunity there was out there on the racetrack,
01:01and how ultimately when it gets that difficult,
01:03it's that ability to get back and focus in on the real basics
01:06that can make massive difference around the course.
01:08Hannah, what did you think?
01:09Well, it's an iconic race course, isn't it?
01:12Racing just underneath Sugarloaf Mountain,
01:14made for a really difficult decision-making race course.
01:17But I think it was weekend, all the teams are trying to win,
01:19but also you need to make sure that on your worst weekend,
01:21you're not having an absolute shocker.
01:23So for the overall season, I think it's been a really nice shake-up.
01:25And for Pete Berling, it was about 10 years ago
01:27that he won an Olympic gold medal on these same waters.
01:30So what was it like for you beating the booth
01:31and now watching everyone else race where you had so much success before?
01:34Yeah, it's such a beautiful spot, isn't it?
01:36Rio to sail in and, yeah, just the vista, the landscape.
01:40And, no, I'm definitely looking forward to getting back there.
01:42Obviously, I didn't manage to make it this year or last year,
01:44but, yeah, looking forward to it.
01:46All right, let's take a deep dive into what we saw in the last couple of days.
01:49We'll start things off with Saturday.
01:51And we had four fleet races to get things going.
01:53And what made Saturday so interesting, Stevie,
01:55were the conditions were tricky,
01:57but we had four different winners in four races.
01:59Yeah, I mean, it was incredibly tough out there on the water, wasn't it?
02:01And it was so easy to sort of find that little bit of extra breeze
02:04or a good wind shift and overtake a lot of boats.
02:06But it was also so easy to make a slight error in how you sailed the boat
02:09and then make a big difference.
02:11And I sort of said to Hannah, you know,
02:13it's so easy for us to think these boats,
02:14they should be able to sail them easily.
02:16But it's not the case, is it?
02:17No, not at all.
02:18And I think on the days where it looks easy to sail the boat,
02:20we find it hard sometimes to look at the details of what's actually going on.
02:25And going from the changing crew numbers from four on Saturday to five on Sunday,
02:30that's a difference in the configuration.
02:32And the configuration of the equipment on board also is different.
02:35So you've got to be able to adapt to those different things
02:37and be competitive across the weekend in different conditions.
02:40Keith, I think you said multiple times on Saturday,
02:42very tricky race course was the word you used a lot.
02:44Yeah.
02:45Well, I mean, both days are tricky, to be honest,
02:46but obviously quite different.
02:48You know, the breeze a lot further right on that Saturday,
02:49a lot lighter, four-up configuration, big elevators.
02:52And then I think the breeze is actually a fair bit more than forecast today.
02:56So they're probably a little bit caught out with that 27.5-metre wing,
03:00you know, sailing in a little bit of a different configuration than normal.
03:02And, you know, I think all the sailors out there would say
03:04they'd really prefer to have their full six-up on board for sure
03:08in those conditions.
03:09Stevie, you had an incident that you pointed out on race number one
03:11that involved the Bonds flying roos.
03:13Yeah, no, I just thought it was really interesting to look at
03:15what a small difference can make to a race.
03:18You know, we're basically looking at here,
03:20and what I want to focus in on here right now
03:22is we can see off to the right-hand side of our screen over here,
03:24we can see the Australians and the Canadians.
03:26They're coming down.
03:27Canada are actually ahead at this moment in time.
03:29They both go for a manoeuvre, basic manoeuvre.
03:32They're just turning the boat through the wind.
03:33They're just jibing the boat.
03:34And at this point, we can just see the Australians
03:36keep a little bit more heel, a little bit more flow,
03:38and then suddenly, up they go, up they go.
03:42They just start moving that bit quicker.
03:44They're up and foiling, and then they milk the boat down.
03:46They're just trying to get down, down.
03:48You can see they're sort of wearing down.
03:49It's almost Samba moment, Todd.
03:51Do you know what I mean?
03:51They're just sort of snaking it down, keeping loose.
03:54But that was then a sixth turned into a second,
03:57just with that slight detail of being able to execute a good jibe.
04:00Canada made exactly the same tactical call, yeah?
04:03But they didn't execute the manoeuvre as well,
04:05and that was just so, so costly for them.
04:07And Hannah, I think to Stevie's point,
04:09and this is something we've seen time and time again from Thomas Slingsby,
04:11he's able to turn a seventh and eighth into a fifth and a fourth.
04:14And that is the difference.
04:15I think we've seen so many winners of the different races across this weekend,
04:19but also across the season so far.
04:21And it's not often the winning of races that makes the difference,
04:24unless it's the final.
04:25It's whether you can turn your twelfth, your tenth, into a fifth or sixth.
04:29And especially when you're looking to try and make that final race,
04:31the points are always so tight.
04:33We often say, you can have one bad race, but you can't have two.
04:37So having that ability to sail through the fleet
04:39and execute when it matters, that is the difference.
04:42Pete, you know better than anyone that on the day one,
04:45it's all about consistency,
04:46because the Bondsflang Roos didn't win a race,
04:48but at the end of day one, they were in first place.
04:50Yeah, you definitely can't win these events on the first day,
04:52but you can certainly make your life incredibly hard.
04:55So, yeah, I think the Australians did a great job
04:57at keeping it consistent, keeping it at the right end of the fleet,
05:00getting a nice accumulation on the leaderboard
05:03really set them up well into day two.
05:04But, you know, that top four, I think,
05:06stayed consistent through the two days as well.
05:08So I'll stay with you.
05:09Did it surprise you then, the form you saw from Tom Slingsby
05:11and the Bondsflang Roos when they came out and did on Sunday?
05:14Well, I mean, they've been sailing so well in both Perth and Auckland,
05:17and then obviously an incredibly tough weekend for them in Sydney,
05:21a lot of frustration.
05:22And, you know, I think that little altercation with Craig
05:25at the end of day one, although it didn't cost me any points.
05:28You know, Germany were going to win that race anyway.
05:31I think got them pretty fired up,
05:32and, you know, that's what we saw into day two.
05:34Hannah, you usually crunch a lot of numbers,
05:36and we so appreciate that.
05:38It made your life easy on Sunday, though,
05:39because it was just Bonfling Roos, Bonfling Roos, Bonfling Roos.
05:42All you had to do was figure out second and third, and maybe fourth.
05:45Yeah, but there were a lot of other teams in contention
05:47to make that final, and the US, you know, almost made it there.
05:50Halfway through that final fleet race, they were looking pretty good.
05:54They had five boats between themselves and the Spanish,
05:56who were the other team they were sort of fighting for that final spot with.
05:59But the Spanish, they've won a season before,
06:02and it got to a situation where I think you could see everything
06:06on board the US team.
06:07They just got a little bit tense.
06:09If you look back at some of the footage,
06:10you can see Taylor kind of lifting his shoulders.
06:12In those conditions, you've got to feel like you're relaxed.
06:15That's such an easier way to sail the boat.
06:17If you get tense on board, everyone can feel that,
06:19and then his mistakes start to creep in.
06:21They just joined into a group of boats.
06:23The Spanish were able to split away
06:24and take that final spot in the final race.
06:27I can so associate with that one.
06:29It's just not quite going right,
06:30and you're just gripping, gripping the wheel and just willing it.
06:33But, of course, it's out of your hand.
06:34So, yeah, it's such a good point that basically, yeah,
06:36you could feel the tension at the moment there.
06:38All right, let's go back now and take a look at the final
06:40and talk about that, because it came down to three teams.
06:43And once again, it was the Bonds Flying Roos, Artemis,
06:45and Los Gallos Spain that made the top three, Stevie.
06:48And this was a great race.
06:49Pete, talk about it,
06:50how you have to reconfigure your thinking
06:51going from 12 to just three.
06:53Yeah, I mean, it's just so much more space.
06:54And you just saw just on the turn up by Artemis,
06:56the boat healed a little bit much.
06:57And at this level,
06:58they probably lost four or five kilometers an hour of speed.
07:01All of a sudden, the Australians are fast into Mark 1.
07:04And whereas that's not necessarily been everything
07:06at this point in the race,
07:08it did, again, give them that space.
07:10I think it was a good decision, actually, by Nathan there
07:12to stay patient, Pete, that early in the race.
07:14Yeah, well, I mean, early on,
07:16I thought that the Spanish hanging out the back
07:17were actually going to look in good shape,
07:19but it wasn't quite to be.
07:20And then, I mean, looking up the second beat here,
07:23Sweden did a great job getting a bit of leverage on the right,
07:25actually getting back to the lead.
07:28Not to the lead, but they fell off the foils, didn't they, Hannah?
07:30Again, it was that little bit,
07:31opened the door for Bonds Flying Roos.
07:32Yeah, and so many really experienced sailors on board,
07:35but maybe that's just kind of the margin
07:37where they haven't had that much time sailing together,
07:39because that's so important.
07:41You can have a whole load of superstars on board,
07:43but they're just lacking a bit of time sailing together
07:46to get that synchronicity between them.
07:48Yeah, it's the win there at the end, wasn't it, Todd?
07:49But I thought it was ironic that it was a penalty
07:51that Craig gave to Artemis
07:53that suddenly made it really easy for the Australians.
07:55Yeah, you made a good point there
07:57that Tom Slingsby was going to agree with him
07:58for the first time all weekend.
08:00And it was the Bonds Flying Roos that get the win
08:03as they take the nice ride to shore.
08:05The celebration was on,
08:06and shortly after the bubble he was flying,
08:08Lisa Darman and catching up
08:10with Tom Slingsby and Tosh Bryant.
08:13Well, Tom's just checking out his green and gold wheel.
08:16He didn't get an Aussie one, but it's close enough, Tom.
08:18Yeah, I know.
08:18We're just saying it's very similar.
08:20So the feels are very similar right now.
08:22And yeah, no, we're just so stoked.
08:25Our team is amazing, and we showed it today.
08:27It was so tough out there.
08:29What was the hardest part about...
08:30I mean, you made it look easy out in front every time,
08:32but what was the hardest part?
08:33It looks like it was easy, but I can guarantee you it wasn't.
08:36I mean, as a sailor, racing under a mountain like that
08:39is very, very tough.
08:41But, I mean, we've just got such a good team,
08:43and we gel so well,
08:45especially when the conditions are hard.
08:47And yeah, it all came together today,
08:49which is such a sort of satisfying feeling.
08:51It's a bit different, obviously,
08:52with only five people on board,
08:53but so much power.
08:54Tash, how hard was it to sail,
08:56you know, undercooked but overpowered?
08:58Yeah, I mean,
08:58that was probably one of the hardest things about today,
09:01is sailing in conditions like that.
09:02But it felt like we needed everyone,
09:04and I think Sammy did an amazing job on the handles,
09:07and yeah, it was a bit easier for us out in front, I think.
09:10But yeah, awesome day together.
09:11What was it like when, you know,
09:13you were stuck at that top gate,
09:14there was no wind,
09:15and you had to will yourself to get on the foil?
09:16Yeah, I mean, that top gate really tested our patience,
09:19and it's something we've been working on
09:20the last few events.
09:21And I think we've come out,
09:23it's like, I guess we're all smiling now,
09:25and hopefully we can take some learnings
09:26and keep working on what we've been doing.
09:28A lot of time just to finish off.
09:29It's a long season,
09:30but how important are these wins
09:31just to keep you pushing,
09:33motivated and excited for the season ahead?
09:35Yeah, these wins are huge.
09:36I mean, they just motivate the team,
09:38they motivate everyone around us,
09:39and yeah, I mean,
09:41these are the moments you compete, right?
09:43Like, we don't compete to come second,
09:45and I say in our team,
09:46like, the day I'm happy coming second
09:48is the day I'm done,
09:49and I'm always hard on us,
09:51but it all feels like it's rewarding
09:53when we have these days.
09:54So yeah, it's good.
09:56This motivates us for the future,
09:57and yeah, hopefully we can get on a roll now.
09:59Well, the broadcasters just asked me to,
10:01you know, your owners, Ryan Reddles,
10:03and Hugh Jackman gave you a bit of stick
10:05for being a redhead
10:05and gave you a new nickname.
10:08How are you feeling about that,
10:09proving them wrong today?
10:10Yeah, I might be a ginger crumpet.
10:13You know what?
10:14But if ginger crumpet can sail like that today,
10:18I'll take it.
10:19Yeah.
10:21Ah, it's a good sport, Tom Slingsby.
10:24Pete, you know better than anyone else,
10:25when this Australian team gets on a roll
10:26and gets this kind of momentum
10:27from the first three seasons of SailGP,
10:29they're a dangerous squad to beat.
10:30Yeah, yeah, definitely a dangerous squad to beat,
10:32and yeah, I think that conditions today
10:34was riding their sweet spot,
10:36you know, easy foiling, tricky, dynamic,
10:38plenty going on.
10:39So yeah, they definitely put it all together today.
10:42You know, I think it was awesome to see Rio
10:43finally boat sailing, flying, beautiful landscape,
10:47and I'm sure it's going to be a staple
10:48on the season calendar going forward.
10:51But for me, the British were really the surprise
10:53this weekend.
10:53You know, everyone else was kind of in about
10:55the space you expected them to be,
10:57but seeing the British ride at the back of the field,
10:59real, real surprise for me.
11:01And your takeaway?
11:02Yeah, I think probably similar.
11:03There's some cracks that are starting to show
11:05in some teams, and we were kind of hoping
11:06that there would be some teams that would step up
11:08in these conditions, make the most of some opportunities
11:10of a little bit more wacky racing,
11:12maybe North Star Canada, Denmark,
11:14who, you know, they're sort of showing promise,
11:16but it's just not ending up in the results.
11:18So the season is rolling on,
11:20and they're just running out of time
11:21to make those changes.
11:22And Stevie, for you, other than being able
11:23to mention Samba multiple times,
11:24what's your takeaway from the Brazil event?
11:27Well, to their point, I think, you know,
11:28the standard of the fleet is so high now
11:30that if you are off your game,
11:31you're going to get seriously punished.
11:33The other thing I think is we can look at it
11:34and think, oh, that's quite chaotic
11:36and quite tricky racing.
11:38The best still work out a win.
11:39Well, no question about it.
11:40All right, let's take a look at the standings.
11:42That's four events down as we turn our attention now
11:45to the next event, which will be event number five
11:47coming up in Bermuda.
11:48But take a look at this.
11:49The Bonds Flying Rues now seven points clear
11:51of Emirates GBR, the defending champions, on 28.
11:54Taylor Canfield and the USLGP team sitting there in 27.
11:57Then you've got Los Gales, the champions from season four.
11:59They sit in fourth place.
12:01Artemis, the new team, sitting in fifth on 23,
12:04even with Conte and Delapierre fresh off a black flag here
12:07as Craig Mitchell doling out the dangerous punishment.
12:10But there it is.
12:11And I think that's really your top teams right there,
12:13are they looking very good.
12:14But coming up next, as we said, it is May 9th and 10th.
12:17We are back to the Great Sound.
12:19Pete Burling's got some good memories from this area as well.
12:22It will be all on at the Apex Bermuda Sail Grand Prix.
12:27All right, so Pete, we'll have your first crack at this.
12:30What makes Bermuda so special?
12:31Obviously, you won America's Cup there.
12:33You've always had success there.
12:34It's almost like the ultimate sailing playground.
12:37Yeah, I think there's that natural amphitheatre
12:39and the Great Sound, you know, the colour of the water,
12:41that kind of really turquoise, clear blue.
12:44And I think everyone's just got so many fond memories.
12:46You know, it was really the, I suppose,
12:48birthplace of the F50 was Bermuda.
12:50So I'm sure everyone's looking forward
12:52to getting back racing there.
12:53Ham, what do you think?
12:54What do you expect?
12:55Well, I mean, from one stunning venue to another, I think.
12:57Yeah, it's true.
12:58Really reliable breeze there.
12:59I think the racing's always really good.
13:01Maybe a slightly more open racetrack,
13:02not as kind of shifty and tricky as this weekend.
13:05So you're going to have to execute really well
13:06to win in a venue like Bermuda.
13:08And somehow Stevie Morrison will find a way
13:10to get the word dark and stormy into our next show
13:12when we get to Bermuda.
13:13What do you anticipate?
13:14Well, I'm seriously hoping it's not going to be dark
13:17and stormy when we get there, Todd.
13:18That is for sure.
13:19I think Hannah's made a really perfect point.
13:21It's going to be quite an open track.
13:22I think it maybe comes down to the crews
13:24are going to need to move slightly away from the data
13:27in terms of the handling of the boat,
13:28start getting into the detail of, you know,
13:30how we make these things go fast.
13:32It's going to be about pushing things to the limit.
13:34The water's flatter.
13:36As you said, the wind's a bit steadier,
13:37a little bit less excuse not to be right on the edge.
13:40All right.
13:40We look forward to it.
13:41So we hope you enjoyed our coverage
13:42of the Nail Reel Sail Grand Prix.
13:45Next up for us, again, May 9th and 10th,
13:47it'll be the Apex Group Bermuda Sail Grand Prix.
13:50You won't want to miss that.
13:51For Stevie Morrison, Hannah Diamond, and Pete Burling,
13:53I'm Todd Harris saying so long for now.
13:55We'll see you in Bermuda.
14:00makes its spectacular return to Bermuda.
14:03They got too hard.
14:11Bringing supercharged racing back
14:13to the island's iconic turquoise waters.
14:16Oh, it's going to be a protest there.
14:18That's tight.
14:19Set against a breathtaking backdrop,
14:21this is a weekend of thrilling sport
14:23and unforgettable entertainment you don't want to miss.
14:30is aèsate public did,
14:32the group demands a big star,
14:36the actors who have really committed to it,
14:37If we follow the answer to the little group,
14:38thanks to Editorless Passage on this,
14:39and we're always going to disconnect in mind.
14:39And then causing it to others by sitting there,
