00:46weekend the man says he was trying to help his friend in the water when the animal turned on him

03:17we were in the water i think for like maybe five minutes before my friend started freaking out and screaming
03:23he said something attacked him
03:24so uh i just jumped in the water and then i grabbed whatever it was attacking him pulled it out
03:30a young beaver probably rabbit had started biting short sleeve says he's never seen a beaver behave like this before
03:37i was a little freaked out i didn't like think it was a beaver at first you know i just
03:40grabbed this little brown blob in the water um but yeah i like saw its teeth and its tail and
03:46i was like okay this is a beaver um it ended up biting me a few times as i got
03:50it out of the water so i was like i got to keep a good grip on this
03:54thing and then uh yeah and then i just tossed them pretty far short sleeve says after the beaver swam
03:59off he started getting people out of the water now the dec says visitors to turtle island should be cautious
04:06beavers are typically afraid of humans but officials say one with rabies may lose that fear they're afraid of us
04:13they don't want to interact with us they're not particularly curious about us
04:16uh so a normal beaver if you're uh you know boating along you're kayaking along if a beaver sees you
04:23they will slap the water with their giant tails and they'll swim away um if you see a beaver approaching
04:28you whether you're swimming or boating um that would be considered abnormal beaver behavior while beavers can get rabies from
04:35other animals it's very rare for them to pass it along to the rest of the colony
04:40beaver would typically probably be mostly a dead end host uh the virus isn't well adapted to that particular animal
04:47uh it may bite another beaver and uh give that beaver babies but in all likelihood it probably wouldn't
