00:00The treason trial of Uganda's veteran opposition leader Kiza Besige begins on Monday after the
00:05High Court dismissed the bid to halt the proceedings. The criminal division of the
00:10High Court in Kampala ruled that Besige's application which sought to stop the prosecution
00:14against him and his co-accused Haji Obed Lutale lacked merit and appeared to be an attempt to
00:20delay the trial. Besige had argued that the charges should be dismissed because he was
00:24allegedly abducted in Kenya in November 2024, forcibly returned to Uganda and denied his
00:30fundamental rights. But the court ruled that the alleged violations were not sufficiently proven
00:35and say that the application appeared to be an attempt to delay proceedings. The decision follows
00:41a recent constitutional court ruling that violations of an accused person's rights no longer automatically
00:46validate criminal prosecution. Besige faces treason charges that carry the death penalty if convicted.
