I didn't win the new BMW X5 for a hole-in-one on the golf course... But I did get a very close look at it during a static presentation! In this video, I will show you the fifth-generation BMW X5 (G65), which brings massive changes in design, powertrains, and technology. The Bavarian manufacturer went with solutions that spark a lot of curiosity, but also a few concerns.

Here is what I will look into and show you in this review:

Manga vs. Design: Why did the new front headlights with the signature X-motif require an emergency modification due to Far Eastern pop culture?

Five Faces of the X5: I’ll explain why this is the first production car to be offered with such a wide variety of powertrains, and where they managed to discreetly tuck in the hydrogen system.

The Huge Battery Mystery: We will look into why the electric iX5 version received a battery whose size (and weight!) will make your head spin.

Disappearing Door Handles: Where did the classic handles go, what are the controversial new "wings" in the doors, and how does BMW explain the safety aspects of this new "Monolithic Design"?

An Interior with a Surprise: We’ll take a close look at the new Panoramic iDrive, the addit

00:06and this is how i didn't win the new bmw x5 for a hole-in-one on the 17th hole
00:12at the
00:13bmw international open but i did get to take a closer look at the new x5 and i have some
00:20thoughts
00:21also what had to be changed because of manga what will have to be changed because customers will
00:28notice the flaws even without my help and what are those strange door handles for and
00:33how on earth are they legal in china let's poke around the new bmw x5 together
00:42the x5 was bmw's first suv or rather sav because bmw insists this car has nothing to do with utility
00:50but is a car for an active lifestyle hence activity sav i'll let you to be the judge of that
00:58but feel
00:59free to share your thoughts in the comment section anyway this is the fifth generation of the x5 it's
01:05internally known as the g65 and it's six centimeters longer four millimeters narrower and about half a
01:13centimeter lower than the previous generation which was called the g05 the wheelbase has been extended
01:19by six centimeters so we can assume that the extra length primarily translates to more passenger
01:25space and that's true although most of those six centimeters went to the driver and the front
01:30passenger the boot capacity is almost the same as in the previous generation with the same powertrain
01:37the new generation has a dozen or so liters
01:44the new generation has a dozen or two liters more in five seat configuration but several dozen liters
01:52less with the second rope backrests folded down there is also no revolution in the standard powertrain
01:59department the former x-drive 30d is now called the 40d x-drive instead of 298 horsepower it now has
02:09313 horsepower thanks to a slightly more powerful electric motor in the 48 volt mild hybrid system
02:17thanks to this extra power despite additional 100 and a bit kilograms it still does 0 to 100 kilometers
02:24per hour in 6.1 seconds the situation is similar with the 40 x-drive petrol which used to be
02:30the x-drive
02:3140i but now the i is reserved for electric models in case of the plug-in hybrid formerly called
02:37the x-drive 50e and now it's called the 50e x-drive the traction battery still has a gross capacity
02:45of
02:4529.5 kilowatt hours but the net capacity increased from 25.7 to 26.5 kilowatt hours and thanks to
02:53a new
02:54three-phase 11 kilowatt ac onboard charger the x5 ph ev is no longer is the ultimate greenwashing machine
03:02but is actually usable however the extra weight has taken away eight kilometers of electric range
03:09despite the additional almost one kilowatt hour net capacity extra the car can now travel only 86 to 102
03:19kilometers in zero emissions mode instead of the 94 to 110 kilometers in the previous generation
03:25however bmw boasts that the new x5 is the world's first vehicle to be offered as standard with five
03:32drive trains we've already had the diesel the gasoline and a plug-in hybrid as you might imagine
03:37there must also be a fully electric model and the fifth power train is a hydrogen fuel cell spoiler
03:44alert the hydrogen version will be offered in the future and only in select markets depending on demand
03:50so probably california but not necessarily eastern europe the cars exist and are production ready but
03:58output is now focused on more popular drive trains the most important announcement regarding the
04:04hydrogen x5 is that the hydrogen tanks are exceptionally flat and fit in the same spot as the traction battery
04:11in the ev version this means that unlike in the toyota mirai where the already small tank takes up
04:18noticeable portion of the interior in the x5 the hydrogen powertrain shouldn't be noticeable to passengers
04:26and of course the hydrogen technology used in the x5 comes from toyota as it's part of their
04:31long-term cooperation which was announced a few years ago but and this is just my unconfirmed theory
04:40the size and capacity of the traction battery in the electric version is a result of designing the
04:45multi-drive platform with hydrogen propulsion in mind what's the deal here the bmw ix5 60x drive has a
04:55141 kilowatt hour traction battery that's nearly 20 kilowatt hours more than the tesla cybertruck
05:01according to my conservative estimates a larger battery adds about 100 to 150 kilograms and the x5
05:08already weighs 2.9 tons now i'm sure they calculated this very carefully and decided that reducing the
05:15car's weight won't give an extra 100 kilometers of range however the time needed to charge the car at
05:22home a 22 kilowatt charger ac is standard or on the road how many 460 kilowatt chargers dc do you
05:31know of
05:31is unnecessarily longer and almost three tons now the frunk is a plus and that concludes the all facts
05:41part of this video next are my thoughts and opinions on features which seem to be designed to sell the
05:48x5
05:48on social media and we'll start with the x-motif headlights when the first photographs were leaked
05:55even before the embargo was lifted a friend immediately sent me a picture of a pig from the
06:00angry birds game when you hit the pig its eyes turn into x's i raised this issue with one of
06:07the bmw
06:08representatives and it turns out they also noticed because in far eastern pop culture especially in
06:14manga an x over the eyes indicates that the character has lost consciousness has been knocked out or killed
06:21that's why the headlight motif can be changed from an x to two parallel lines the x5 is bmw's next
06:30model
06:31after the ix3 the new 3 series and the refreshed 7 series to feature the panoramic i drive cockpit
06:38this display spans the entire width of the cockpit under the windshield i talk more about it in my bmw
06:45ix3 review but i'll do a full panoramic i drive review in the future when i've spent a few days
06:51with
06:51a new bmw rather than just a few hours during the launch event the x5 also comes as standard with
06:57a
06:57passenger screen because apparently that's what customers have been missing now in my opinion
07:02this is simply a nod to chinese customers but if you are from europe or the us and prefer staring
07:08at the screen instead of talking to other people in the car or admiring the world outside let me know
07:14in the comments of course the driver can't see the display while driving now the interior is spacious
07:20and finished in high quality materials including leather and slate i mentioned the use of stone
07:27in a car once before during the presentation of the jaguar type double concept car you can find out
07:34more about it in a video on my channel now speaking of leather there are vegan options but this time
07:42the word recycling isn't mentioned even once in the entire 62 page long press release about the x5
07:50i have a feeling that bmw has realized it went overboard with the recycled materials in the ix3
07:56and knows it's targeting a different customer with the x5 now the only problem is the lower door panels
08:03and door pockets which are made of cheap plastic and bmw is aware of it and they're working to find
08:09a solution so that in later models the lower door trim is made of better materials they just need
08:14to save money elsewhere and in a way that won't be noticed by the customer and speaking of lower
08:20parts of the door this is where the emergency manual release lever is located under normal
08:26circumstances the doors open and close automatically by pressing a button inside on the doors or by
08:32pressing the winglets that replace the door handles on the outside similar winglets were previously
08:38used in the volvo ex60 although even earlier they were also present on the mustang mac e but in the
08:45mustang the winglets were just to pull the door open because the release button was on the b pillar
08:50however in volvo and bmw you actually press the winglets now my first question to volvo during
08:56the launch event a few months ago and now i didn't get a clear answer from them still my question
09:02was
09:02in what world is this a safe solution volvo said something about redundant power supply but i
09:09didn't feel like i got a clear answer so i asked the same questions and expressed my doubts to bmw
09:14who
09:14said hold my beer now apparently bmw's solution is much safer than volvo's because there are even
09:20more redundancies and if everything else fails a bolt inside the door drops and transforms the fixed
09:28winglet into a movable analog door handle but what about the chinese market where the new regulations
09:35ban hidden and electronic door handles now apparently bmw has read the chinese regulations carefully
09:40and it turns out the protruding part of the door handle needs to have a specific surface area and the
09:48bmw and volvo winglets clearly meet this requirement so another question arises what's wrong with regular
09:56door handles to which bmw responds that when working on the new x5 they focused on what's called
10:04monolithic design and the door handles normal door handles disrupted this design from the sides now i
10:12preferred the distinctive muscular shoulder line that bmw has always raved about but now they want a
10:20monolith so there we are then bmw claims the winglets are mainly a design choice nothing to do with
10:28aerodynamics but my bullshitometer is picking up some crappy sense still all i have are my suspicions and
10:36will have to wait until autumn for my driving impressions and what do you think about the new bmw x5
10:44let me know in the comment section below if you like my sarcastic down-to-earth and possibly mildly
