00:00Gold is one of the most ethically compromised and heavily tainted industries in the world.
00:05It's not just connected to slave labour conditions in mines all over Asia, Africa and Latin America,
00:10also human trafficking, sexual exploitation, but particularly illegal gold mining is hugely
00:17connected to organised crime networks and particularly in Latin America. It's one of
00:21the main sources of financing warlords and cartels, also environmental devastation because
00:27it's extracted with mercury, which is a super lethal chemical. And the problem is, is that gold can be
00:33melted down and recast and mixed with legal scrap. So once it's melted, its origin is completely
00:39untraceable. Even if like you, when you say that you asked, is this ethical gold? Is this ethically
00:45sourced? There is no real way to know.
