00:01The Sound of Silence at Dickon Pot
00:04We're starting our 2025 journey in North Yorkshire, England, at a place called Dickon Pot.
00:11It's part of the massive Long Churn and Alum Pot cave system, a popular spot for cavers.
00:17On January 19th, a Sunday afternoon, a group of cavers were making their way through the system.
00:24One of them started to descend the first pitch, a 100-foot drop into the darkness.
00:30Suddenly, the group at the top heard a loud bang.
00:33They called out to their friend, but there was no response.
00:36They pulled on the rope, and it went taut.
00:39They were at a traverse, a horizontal section of the cave, meaning they couldn't see down the pitch.
00:45All they knew was that their friend was on the end of that rope, and something had gone terribly wrong.
00:51They feared he was suspended, injured, or worse.
00:55They immediately called for help.
00:57The cave rescue organization, the same team that lost Dave Anderson years ago, was on the scene.
01:04The first rescuers to reach the bottom of the pitch found the caver lying motionless.
01:09They couldn't find any sign of life.
01:11After the police recorded the scene, the team carefully placed the man on a stretcher
01:16and began the long, grim task of hauling him out of the cave.
01:21At the surface, paramedics confirmed what the rescuers already knew.
01:25He was gone.
01:27We don't know the caver's name, but we know he died from a catastrophic fall.
01:32What was the bang?
01:34Did his equipment fail?
01:35Did he slip?
01:37We'll probably never know for sure.
01:38All we know is that one minute he was on a routine descent, and the next, he was gone.
01:50Let's head to Florida, to a place that sounds like it was designed for a postcard.
01:55Merritt Mill Pond in Mariana is home to Twin Caves, a stunning underwater cave system with
02:00two openings that swallow you into a labyrinth of submerged passages.
02:05The water is clear, the diving is world class, and on March 18th, 2025, three divers decided
02:12it was the perfect day for an exploration.
02:15Here's the thing about cave diving.
02:17You go in as a team, and you come out as a team.
02:20That's the rule.
02:22These three divers knew that.
02:23They geared up, checked their equipment, and descended into the crystal clear water.
02:28The first opening is about 60 feet, 18 meters deep, the second one shallower.
02:33They would have been following a guideline, moving through the narrow passages, their lights
02:38cutting through the darkness.
02:40Everything was going according to plan, until it wasn't.
02:44Maybe the visibility dropped.
02:46Maybe someone's light failed.
02:48Maybe they hit a restriction, a tight squeeze that one of them couldn't make.
02:52In cave diving, panic is contagious.
02:55One person gets stuck, the others try to help, and suddenly you've got three people in trouble
03:00instead of one.
03:01Two of them managed to fight their way back to the surface.
03:04They came up gasping, probably in shock, and immediately called for help.
03:09At 1.15 in the afternoon, the Jackson County Sheriff's Office got the call that every cave diver dreads.
03:16Divers overdue.
03:17A massive rescue operation launched.
03:20Fire and Rescue, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, the Sheriff's Office, all descended on the pond.
03:27They went back in, searching the dark passages for the third diver.
03:32They found him, but it was too late.
03:34He was lying motionless somewhere deep in the flooded tunnels of twin caves.
03:38The authorities won't say what went wrong.
03:41Equipment failure?
03:43Navigation error?
03:44A medical emergency?
03:46We'll probably never know.
03:48But here's what we do know.
03:50Three people went into that beautiful, inviting water, and only two came back.
03:55And those two survivors have to live with the fact that they made it out and their friend didn't.
04:00That's a weight you carry for the rest of your life.
04:05The King of the Deep's Last Dive
04:07For our third story, we're heading to the rugged mountains of eastern Sardinia, to a place where crystal-clear water
04:14bursts from the base of the Supramonte Massif.
04:17Su Gologone Springs is one of the most important freshwater springs in Italy, a gaping mouth in the rock that
04:24drops down at least 443 feet into a labyrinth of submerged passages.
04:31The water is cold, the visibility is incredible, and the cave system is a siren call for the world's best
04:38divers.
04:40On October 10, 2025, one of those divers was Luca Pedrali.
04:45At 60 years old, Luca was a living legend.
04:49They called him Redelli Abissi, the King of the Deep.
04:54He held the Italian depth record with a dive to 866 feet in Lake Garda.
05:00He had pushed deeper and further into caves than almost anyone else in the country.
05:04If anyone could handle Su Gologone, it was Luca.
05:09On that day, Luca was part of a major expedition to try and find a connection between Su Gologone and
05:15another nearby cave.
05:17He descended into the cold, clear water, his lights illuminating the rocky walls as he moved deeper into the system.
05:24But somewhere down there, something went wrong.
05:28He started to feel unwell.
05:31Maybe it was his heart, maybe his lungs, maybe something else entirely.
05:36He made the call to surface.
05:38He broke the surface and his support team was right there.
05:41But within seconds, Luca collapsed.
05:44He became unresponsive.
05:46His team immediately started CPR, screaming for help.
05:50The emergency services arrived and took over, but it was no use.
05:55The King of the Deep was dead, right there at the edge of the water, in the one place he
06:00felt most alive.
06:01It appears Luca suffered a medical emergency, a tragic and unpredictable event.
06:08It's a chilling echo of a similar incident at the same spot in 2010, when another diver died in almost
06:14the exact same way.
06:17Rest in peace.
06:20The Maze at the Bottom of the World
06:22Our next stop is on the other side of the world, in a remote corner of South Australia.
06:27Near the small town of Tantanula, about 22 miles from Mount Gambier, lies Tank Cave.
06:34It's a popular dive spot, but it's also a killer.
06:38The underwater cave system is a maze of tunnels, rock formations, and tight passages that have claimed multiple lives over
06:45the years.
06:46On November 30, 2025, it was about to claim another.
06:52Gary Gibson was 65 years old, a highly experienced cave diver from Victoria.
06:57His friends described him as careful, methodical, and funny.
07:01He had years of experience, and he knew what he was doing.
07:05On that Sunday, he and two other men geared up and descended into the cold, dark water of Tank Cave.
07:13The dive started normally.
07:15Three divers, moving through the submerged passages, their lights cutting through the murky water.
07:20And like every seasoned cave diver, they were probably thinking the same universal thought.
07:26Please let today be a finding cool rocks day, and not a why is this tunnel suddenly shrinking day.
07:33But somewhere deep in the cave, Gary encountered a problem.
07:37He became trapped by rocks.
07:39Maybe he was squeezing through a narrow passage and dislodged something.
07:43Maybe he was exploring a side tunnel, and a shift in the cave pinned him down.
07:48Whatever happened, he couldn't free himself.
07:50And in an underwater cave, if you can't move, you drown.
07:55His two companions realized he was missing.
07:58They searched, their lights sweeping through the dark passages, but they couldn't find him.
08:03Panic set in.
08:04They surfaced and immediately called for help.
08:07A massive recovery operation was launched.
08:10Police divers, cave diving experts, and one very special guest.
08:15Dr. Richard Harris, the Australian anesthetist who became a hero during the 2018 Thai Cave Rescue.
08:22If anyone could bring Gary home, it was Dr. Harris.
08:26On December 1st, they found him.
08:29Gary Gibson was lying in the underwater cave, trapped by rocks, about 164 feet away from where he had last
08:36been seen by his companions.
08:38How did he get there?
08:40Did he try to find another way out?
08:42Did he get disoriented?
08:43We'll never know.
08:45The recovery team carefully extracted his body and brought him back to the surface.
08:49An internal investigation is underway to figure out exactly what went wrong.
08:54But the answer is tragically simple.
08:57Even the most careful, experienced divers can be trapped by forces beyond their control.
09:05Midnight in the Water Caves
09:07Okay, so for our final story of 2025, we're heading to the coast of Spain, to a place called Cueva
09:16del Agua, the Water Caves.
09:19This is one of Europe's only warm water cenotes, a beautiful and popular spot near Cartagena.
09:27But it's also a place with a dark history, having claimed five lives in the 35 years before 2025.
09:35On the night of January 18th, it claimed its sixth.
09:41Lorena Garcia Martin was 37 years old, an English teacher living in Spain.
09:46Her boyfriend, Ismael, was 41, and he was a diving instructor.
09:52On that Saturday night, the two of them decided to go for a dive in Cueva del Agua, late at
09:59night, in a cave system that had already killed five people.
10:04What could possibly go wrong?
10:07They descended into the warm water, their lights cutting through the darkness.
10:11But according to Ismael, the visibility quickly became a nightmare.
10:17Sediments stirred up from the cave floor, turning the water into a murky soup.
10:22He claims he couldn't see anything.
10:25He panicked.
10:26And in his panic, he did the one thing you should never do in cave diving.
10:32He left his partner behind.
10:34He surfaced, gasping, alone.
10:37He says he went back in to search for her, but he couldn't find her.
10:42At 11.03 p.m., he called 112, Spain's emergency number.
10:47The call kept cutting out, but he managed to tell them that Lorena was still down there, carrying two air
10:53cylinders.
10:54A massive search operation was launched.
10:57The GEAS, the Special Group of Underwater Activities of the Civil Guard, along with firefighters and local police, worked through
11:06the night.
11:07In the early hours of Sunday morning, they found her.
11:11She was dead.
11:13But here's where the story gets darker.
11:15Ismael's story started to fall apart.
11:18First, he said they'd been diving for an hour.
11:21Then he changed it to half an hour.
11:24Investigators started asking questions.
11:26Did Lorena even have the certification for a dive this dangerous?
11:31And why would Ismael, an experienced diving instructor, take his girlfriend into one of Spain's deadliest caves at night?
11:39The authorities are now investigating him for reckless homicide.
11:42He calls the car.
