00:00Ellison's Cave Disaster

00:01On February 12, 2011, a group of 10 students from the University of Florida

00:07entered Ellison's Cave in Walker County, Georgia.

00:10The cave, located on Pigeon Mountain, is the 12th deepest in the United States,

00:15with a depth of over 1,000 feet and nearly 12 miles of underground passages.

00:19The group, part of a Christian Athletes Fellowship,

00:23was on a weekend trip and had no significant caving experience.

00:26The students made their way to one of the cave's initial obstacles,

00:30the warm-up pit, a 125-foot vertical shaft.

00:34At the top of this pit, one of the students accidentally dropped a bag.

00:3820-year-old Grant Lockenbach decided to descend to retrieve it.

00:42He used a repelling device meant for rock climbing,

00:45not for the specific type of ropes used in caving.

00:48Partway down the descent, at a depth of about 100 feet, something went wrong.

00:53Lockenbach became tangled in his own ropes,

00:55directly underneath a waterfall of frigid water.

00:58He could no longer move up or down.

01:01The water, with a temperature just above freezing, poured over him relentlessly.

01:06When the group realized Grant was in trouble,

01:0918-year-old Michael Peary decided to help him.

01:11He also descended, only to become entangled in the ropes as well,

01:16just below Lockenbach.

01:17Both men now hung helplessly in the waterfall.

01:20The rest of the group, positioned at the top of the shaft, could do nothing.

01:24Their equipment was minimal.

01:26The entire group was sharing a single harness and one set of ascenders,

01:30which were also incomplete.

01:32Lockenbach had no helmet or headlamp.

01:35Peary had a small handheld flashlight that he soon dropped,

01:38leaving them in complete darkness.

01:40As the minutes passed, the intense cold began to take its toll.

01:44The remaining students raised the alarm,

01:47which initiated a large-scale rescue operation.

01:50However, it took more than eight hours for rescuers to recover the bodies of Lockenbach and Peary.

01:56The official cause of death was hypothermia.

01:59A post-accident investigation concluded that the tragedy was entirely avoidable,

02:04caused by a fatal lack of basic knowledge, preparation, and the correct equipment.

02:10Cradle Hole Tragedy

02:11On January 15, 1995, a group of ten cavers entered the Cradle Hole Cave System

02:19in County Fermanagh, Northern Ireland.

02:22The cave is part of the larger Marble Arch Caves Global Geopark,

02:26a network of limestone passages carved out by underground rivers.

02:31The party was a mix of experienced cavers and students

02:35from a club with members on both sides of the Irish border.

02:38The weather at the entrance was clear, and the group began their descent.

02:43Just twenty minutes after entering the cave,

02:45at a depth of approximately 328 feet,

02:49the situation changed dramatically.

02:51Heavy rainfall further up the mountain had created a flash flood,

02:56which surged through the narrow passageways.

02:59The water level rose with incredible speed,

03:02transforming the previously calm underground stream into a violent torrent.

03:08The force of the water separated the group, and panic ensued.

03:12Seven of the cavers managed to fight their way back to the surface and raise the alarm.

03:17A massive rescue operation was immediately launched,

03:21involving around 50 rescuers from the Irish Cave Rescue Organization,

03:25the RUC Mountain Rescue Team, and local caving clubs.

03:29Police divers were called in,

03:31and two Royal Air Force helicopters equipped with searchlights

03:35were dispatched to the scene to assist in the search for the three missing cavers.

03:40Rescuers battled against the powerful current and rising water levels inside the cave.

03:45Soon after the operation began,

03:47they located and recovered the bodies of two of the missing cavers,

03:52Philip Marshall from Armagh and Con Cormican from Dublin.

03:55The search continued for the third man,

03:58Pat Brian Kennedy from Wicklow.

04:01Despite the extensive efforts of the rescue teams,

04:04he was also found to have drowned in the floodwaters.

04:07The speed and power of the flash flood left the group with almost no time to react,

04:14turning a routine exploration into a fatal event.

04:29Guna Caves, India's Devil's Kitchen

04:33In the hills of Kodai Canal, India, lies a deep chasm known as the Guna Caves,

04:39originally named Devil's Kitchen.

04:42On September 3, 2006,

04:44a group of 11 friends from Manjumal, Kerala,

04:48arrived at the caves for a day of sightseeing.

04:50They encountered a warning sign at the entrance to a restricted area,

04:54but it was written in Tamil,

04:56a language the group could not read.

04:58The sign stated that 13 people had died in the area.

05:03Unaware of the specific danger,

05:05they crossed a dilapidated fence

05:07and began exploring the uneven, rock-strewn terrain.

05:11Looking back,

05:12that broken fence was basically nature whispering,

05:21As they moved through the woods,

05:23one of the friends, Subhash Chandran,

05:25stepped over a covered crevice.

05:27The ground gave way,

05:29and he vanished into a deep pit.

05:32Another friend, Abilash John,

05:35witnessed the fall and screamed for help.

05:38The friends rushed to the edge of the hole,

05:40a vertical drop of more than 90 feet,

05:43but could see only darkness.

05:46Panicked,

05:47the group sought help from local villagers,

05:49who warned them to leave immediately,

05:52fearing police involvement.

05:54The friends refused and contacted the authorities.

05:58When police and fire rescue teams arrived,

06:01they were hesitant to act.

06:03Given the cave's history,

06:04they considered a descent to be a suicide mission.

06:08As hours passed,

06:09the official position was that a recovery was impossible.

06:13Refusing to abandon their friend,

06:16one of the men,

06:18shouted Subhash's name into the pit.

07:26On April 18, 2014,

07:30two of China's most experienced cave divers,

07:33Wang Tao and Wang Yuan,

07:35prepared for a record-setting descent

07:37into the Jiu Dong Cave System in Guangxi, China.

07:41Nicknamed the Underwater Everest,

07:43The cave is a labyrinth of flooded passages

07:46plunging to extreme depths,

07:48where visibility is often poor

07:50and the pressure is immense.

07:52Only the most skilled technical divers

07:55attempt to explore its deepest sections.

07:57Their objective was to reach a depth of 558 feet.

08:02Both men were highly trained

08:03and equipped with specialized closed-circuit rebreathers

08:06and multiple gas cylinders for the extreme depths.

08:10The dive plan was complex,

08:12with a planned bottom time of only 20 minutes

08:15and a decompression schedule

08:16that would last nearly four hours.

08:19Wang Yuan took the lead,

08:21unreeling the thin guideline

08:23that would serve as their only path

08:24back to the surface,

08:26while Wang Tao followed.

08:28The conditions were challenging.

08:30Visibility was low at only about 6.5 feet.

08:53In the silted water and total blackness,

08:55the two divers were instantly disoriented

08:58and separated.

08:59Wang Yuan conducted a frantic,

09:01circular search for his partner

09:03and the lost line,

09:04but found nothing.

09:06Following his training,

09:07he began his ascent,

09:09hoping to find a previously laid safety line

09:11at a shallower depth.

09:13He eventually located one and followed it,

09:15where he found a small, trapped air pocket.

09:18He surfaced inside it,

09:20alone in the dark.

09:21When the divers failed to return on schedule,

09:24their surface support,

09:26Zhou Pei,

09:26initiated a rescue.

09:28Wang Yuan was eventually located
