00:51A day after his resignation is accepted, the VHP leader and Ram Mandir Trust General Secretary Champat Rai breaks silence,
01:03puts the blame on fellow ousted trustee Anil Mishra, vows to give up point-by-point rebuttal after the final

03:07The World Cup run ends for hosts, United States and Portugal.
03:12Ronaldo's dream for a prestigious trophy ends in tears after Spain knocks Portugal out.
03:30The story that's been breaking is again around the Ram Mandir dress where amidst the growing uproar over the manner
03:37in which donations,
03:38thefts took place at the Shri Ram Mandir in Ayodhya,
03:42the blame game carries on because now Champat Rai, the General Secretary of the Trust who only resigned,
03:50whose resignation was accepted yesterday, has made a statement to the special investigation team that India Today has accessed.
03:58In that statement, Champat Rai has blamed his fellow trustee Anil Mishra over the lapses that took place,
04:05particularly when it came to bank records, Champat Rai has claimed he had no knowledge of any bank MOUs.
04:12Champat Rai claims allegations that he was involved in any way are baseless and he has vowed to remain silent
04:19till the final report.
04:21And then says he will give a point-by-point rebuttal.
04:24Remember, he is the man in the line of fire because people associated with him, including his driver,
04:30were seen to be involved in the misappropriation of funds at the Shri Ram Mandir at the moment.
04:36And that is really our top focus because what's happened as a result of this donation theft controversy
04:43is that while Champat Rai and others are claiming that the allegations are baseless,
04:50the special investigation team is expanding its probe and India Today has accessed the interim report of the SIT.
04:58And this report in my hand clearly shows that there has been widespread misappropriation.
05:04The report confirms theft, criminal misappropriation and criminal breach of trust
05:10that occurred during the donation process inside the counting room.
05:15So this report is virtually the interim report only confirms what has been suspected,
05:21widespread corruption in the Shri Ram Mandir Trust.
05:25Take a look at our top story.
05:33Champat Rai, who stepped down as a general secretary of the Shri Ram Jan Bhumidit Chetra Trust,
05:38issues his first statement since the Ram Mandir donation theft scandal broke out.
05:44In a handwritten note posted on X on Tuesday,
05:47Champat Rai called the charges against him baseless and added that he has chosen to remain silent.
05:53He claimed the classified SIT preliminary report was made public at the trust meeting on Monday.
06:00Rai said he will issue a point-by-point response once the final report of the SIT is released.
06:06There are signs of differences within the trust members.
06:22Until now, it appeared that only cash and ornaments donated by devotees
06:26had been siphoned off from the Shri Ram Mandir in Ayodhya.
06:29But as the investigation widens, the probe is now looking well beyond the alleged theft.
06:36The special investigation team is scrutinizing more than 124 crore rupees spent by the Temple Trust.
06:43That includes 113 crore rupees for the Pran Pratishtha ceremony of Ram Lalla on January 22, 2024.
06:52Over 10 crore rupees spent on the Ram Temple flag hosting ceremony.
06:56Nearly 83 lakh rupees incurred during the first Pratishtha Dwaadashi celebrations.
07:02And another 43 lakh rupees spent on arrangements for devotees during the Maha Cope.
07:09Sources say investigators are auditing the trust's financial records over the past two years
07:14to determine whether there were irregularities in the utilization of funds.
07:19The SIT is also examining donations made to Ram Lalla in the form of precious metals.
07:25Trust records show devotees donated 2.3 kilograms of gold and 83.3 kilograms of silver
07:32between November 2024 and February 2025.
07:36During the Maha Cumbha, another 1.5 kilograms of gold and 28 kilograms of silver were received.
07:43The SIT's preliminary findings point to serious institutional lapses and inadequate oversight.
07:49It says nearly 70 alleged theft incidents took place between April 27 and June 5 alone.
07:55The probe has also flagged alleged nepotism in appointments, claiming members of the cash-counting
08:01staff were recruited on the recommendations of trust officials rather than through an independent
08:06process.
08:08Meanwhile, the Shri Ram Janbhumitir Chetra has undergone a major shake-up.
08:13General Secretary Champath Rai, trustee Anil Mishra and special invitee Gopal Rao have been removed.
08:21Whistleblower Krishna Mohan has taken over as an interim general secretary, while the search
08:26for a new CEO is underway.
08:28Bureau Report, India Today.
08:33Let's raise some of the big questions tonight.
08:35Should the Ayodhya Trust be completely disbanded and a new one appointed?
08:40Are Mandir Trust members divided amongst themselves?
08:44Has there been a total supervisory failure in Ayodhya?
08:48And where does the buck stop?
08:51Joining me now, our special guest, Mahant Rajaram Chandra Acharya Sarpanch of the Shri Panj,
09:00Ramanandi Nirmohi Akhada, is joining me.
09:03So he comes from the Nirmohi Akhada and he is 102 years old.
09:07I want to tell you, he has fought the title case since 1949.
09:11Karthik Chopra Mukhtar and national spokesperson of the Nirmohi Akhada in Ayodhya is joining me.
09:19And I am also joined by Shri Raj Nair, BHP spokesperson.
09:24I appreciate all of you joining us here on the show.
09:27Before I want to come to my guest who is 102 years old.

11:50to the national spokesperson of the Nirmohi Akhada. Now, I'm hearing what the Acharya is saying but the truth of
11:57the matter is that there has been a long-running battle between the Nirmohi Akhada and the Vishwa Hindu Parishad
12:03over the Ram Mandir who should take credit now because of what has happened. VHP is saying you can't hold
12:08us responsible.
12:12No, no. I would like to just come in over here. This battle for Ram Janambhumi has been one of
12:19continuous possession change ever since 1528.
12:23In 1528, our mahanth, Shamanand ji, and there are 338, who are mahanth, who are going to defend the muslims.
12:31In English, please, sir.
12:34After that, regularly, the Nirmohi Akhada used to always take possession back and hold on to it.
12:40In 1858, after the First War of Independence, after Wajid Ali Shah is disposed and British shul comes in,
12:46the Britishers then put a brick wall inside the inner courtyard, separating the inner courtyard in two parts.
12:53Please understand, there is an inner courtyard and an outer courtyard.
12:57And inside the inner courtyard, there is the Ram Chabutra.
13:00The Nirmohi Akhada has always believed that the entire site is the birthplace of Bhagwan Shri Ram Lalla Virajman.
13:06During the High Court hearings, Justice Sudhir Agarwal asked our lawyer,
13:10Ranjit Dar Varma ji, Mr. Varma, please tell me the exact spot where Lord Ram was born.
13:15Mr. Varma said, Lord Ram was a Chakrivati Samrat. He was born in a palace.
13:19Therefore, the birthing chamber for us was this entire area.
13:22As far as we were concerned, we could put the idols anywhere in this birthing area.
13:24Sir, let's not go into the past. With new regard, let's talk about today.
13:28Let's not go into the past. I am talking about today.
13:32Today, when the VHP is saying that the government of the day is saying we are investigating these irregularities,
13:38why are you raising a red flag? Why don't you have faith in the SIT?
13:45We do not have faith in the SIT. We have asked for an immediate disbanding of this trust because all
13:51the trust properties and assets and funds,
13:54all are the property of Bhagwan Shri Ram Lalla Virajman and not our trust that was made and registered at
13:59an address in Greater Kailash 1, New Delhi.
14:01The address of Bhagwan Shri Ram Lalla Virajman is Ram Janambhumi. His office is at Ram Kacheri Mandir.
14:07So, this trust was made. If you look at the original trust deed, the stamp paper was bought by Khela
14:15Ram Murmu, Government of India.
14:17The Government of India was the settler of the trust.
14:19They created the trust and decided in the trust deed itself, it says, that out of all the different schemes
14:25which the Supreme Court has suggested,
14:26they find that instead of society or X, Y, Z, trust is the best solution. But that trust is registered
14:33in New Delhi.
14:34Two places are kept empty in that trust, which later are filled up with Mahan Nitya Gopal Das and Champat
14:40Raiji.
14:40This particular thing, trust…
14:43So, you are saying the VHP and Sang Paribar hijacked the entire trust or the entire movement. Is that your
14:52charge?
14:56Not the movement, the trust. Because the Nirmoyah Khada has been fighting all the way through.
15:01In 1959, Nirmoyah Khada as Shaibiyat, where title of the Lord is undisputed, challenges the 145 proceedings, which were wrongly
15:09instituted on 5-1-1950.
15:12These were put into appearance in 1953 for the simple reason that the city magistrate said there are two civil
15:18suits.
15:18So, when the civil suits abate, we'll hear the 145. Now, this 145 rightfully should have been heard after the
15:23judgment of the Supreme Court.
15:25Because the 145 proceedings were kept in abeyance. In that 145 proceeding, the land was taken from the sadhus of
15:31the Nirmoyah Khada.
15:32A list was given of all the items that were found over there, including the Moortis, the Shaligram Pathar, etc.,
15:38etc.
15:38Vidhi was given to them about how puja is to be done. And the condition of handing over charge, I
15:44repeat, charge, not ownership, to the receiver was that a pujari would be appointed.
15:49And that pujari system continued all the way through Mr. Lal Dasji, who was later murdered.
15:54And finally ends at Satyendra Dasji Maharaj, who was the last pujari as far as the receiver was concerned.
16:00In 1982, there is a dacoity on the site itself. But what was acquired in 1950 was only the inner
16:08courtyard.
16:09The outer courtyard, till 1982, till 17 February 1982, was in the possession and control of the Nirmoyah Khada.
16:17So, there was no question about the Nirmoyah Khada.
16:19Sir, let's not, again I repeat, let's not go into the past. I am asking you about today. You are
16:24going back into the past. I am asking you about today.
16:28Today, when there has been these serious charges of misappropriation of funds, where do you believe the buck stops?
16:39The buck stops with the central government, which was tasked by the Supreme Court to make a fair trust, to
16:46protect the properties of Bhagawan Sri Ram Lala Virajwan,
16:49to build his temple, to manage that temple, and ensure that everything is done in a free and transparent manner.
16:56The central government did everything. The central government in good faith created this trust.
17:01But the membership of this trust was manipulated by the VHP and people like Mr. Champatra and Nitya Gopal Das,
17:07who had no business, first of all, to be there, because the trust is based on the acquisition of certain
17:11areas, Act 1993,
17:13which ruled that no member of any trust or any trust prior to the date of 1st, 7th January 1993,
17:19could ever be handed over this property, which was acquired by the central government post the demolition on 6 December
17:251992.
17:27I take your point, I take your point, Mr. Chopra, Mr. Chopra, you know, you are making very serious,
17:37Sir, you are making very serious allegations. The Supreme Court in its judgment had called for the constitution of a
17:43trust.
17:44What you are saying is the manner in which the VHP, you claim, virtually took over the trust, the likes
17:49of Champatra is,
17:50where you have your objections. I want Sriraj Nayar to respond. He must have the right.
17:54If you give us two minutes.
17:56No, no, I must allow him to respond.
17:58Just give us one minute, Razeeb, I'll finish this off.
18:00Yeah, okay. Please finish. Please finish.
18:06Okay.
18:07Please finish.
18:07So, basically, the Supreme Court judgment in Para 804-805 say that, after having taken our Sheviath,
18:13they still say that we had, we always had a historical role and presence on the site,
18:19without stating what that role and presence was.
18:21And, therefore, they recommend to the central government that in any scheme of management that is made by the central
18:26government,
18:26Nirmoyi Akhada is to be given adequate role and representation.
18:30Nirmoyi Akhada is a panchayiti naa nyas.
18:32It has a board of governors.
18:34And, as far as we are concerned, when you say Nirmoyi Akhada, it means the entire board of 15 members.
18:40Obviously, we can't have 15 members in the trust.
18:42So, we would have been satisfied with three.
18:44But, we don't get three.
18:46One of our mahants, who is based in Ayodhya, is unilaterally taken into this trust by people who make this
18:52trust.
18:53Now, that is against our constitution.
18:55Can I now stop you, Karthik Ji?
18:57Karthik Ji, I've heard you now.
19:02I think it's only fair that I now allow Mr. Srirad Nair a chance to speak.
19:06Mr. Srirad Nair, you see, this entire issue seems to have split in a way.
19:12The Sadhu Sant Samaj, the Nirmoyi Akhada has run even in the past a campaign or questioned the VHP or
19:18the VHP's monopoly that it tried to establish over the Ram Mandir or the politicization of the entire movement.
19:25Now, all of this happens.
19:26Do you concede this has caused huge reputational damage?
19:29Is it enough for a Champat Rai to say, look, I am innocent.
19:33Others did this.
19:34It surely goes well beyond that.
19:36Because I am looking at the report again, the report is very, very detailed and suggests that there was a
19:41huge failure at different levels, particularly on supervision and institutionally.
19:52Well, Rajiv, we were very clear in the first week of July, when all these things came up, we were
19:59the first to say that we don't want to shield anybody, we don't want to protect anybody.
20:03The SIT was formed, eight people were arrested, two trustees, Champat Rai and Anil Mishra Rai resigned.
20:11And now the SIT has asked for some more time.
20:14Definitely it has hurt, in your last show also I said, 120 crore Hindus have been deeply hurt because of
20:22this act which has happened.
20:25It is unimaginable.
20:27Nobody could imagine that this kind of things could have happened.
20:30500 years of struggle by Hindus to regain this temple and this Bhavya Devan temple had come up.
20:38People from across the world.
20:39Mr. Chopra is saying that the trust should be dismantled.
20:42No, no, Mr. Chopra is making a more serious.
20:44He is claiming that the manner in which the trust was constituted, the VHP and dare I say the centre,
20:50chose its own representatives, excluded people who according to him should have been there, it should have been more inclusive.
20:56And thereby the VHP therefore stops with the Sangh Parivar, you took over the trust.
21:03The trust was not meant only for the Sangh Parivar, it should have been a wider, more inclusive body is
21:08what is being suggested.
21:13Should it be dismantled now?
21:15When we were asked about the constitution of the trust, see now the matter is subsidized.
21:21Karthik, I didn't speak anything.
21:23One by one, Mr. Chopra, let him complete.
21:26Let Mr. Nayar complete.
21:27I never came in between.
21:29Yeah, please go ahead.
21:31See, the trust consists of various saints from various mathas and mathas.
21:38You know the trust.
21:39Who chose them?
21:40You have the list of the trustees also.
21:42How were they decided?
21:43Decided by Mahanji.
21:45No, who decided on them?
21:46Who chose them?
21:47See, as I said, now, see right now we are talking about the incident which happened and the matter is
21:55subsidized.
21:56Now, talking about all these things at this juncture is absolutely unfair.
22:00Sir, the interim reports are institutional failure.
22:03I am asking you a simple question.
22:05No, we are not talking about the report.
22:06We are not talking about the report at all.
22:09We are not even talking about the report.
22:10We are talking about other issues.
22:12See, Randeep, we are…
22:13One minute, one minute, she definitely agree.
22:15Whatever has happened is absolutely wrong.
22:18But let us wait for the SIT to complete its investigation.
22:23Let's not jump the guns.
22:24Now, there is a lot of rumor mongering happening.
22:27A lot of AI-generated videos coming up.
22:30Right now, we are all eagerly waiting for the SIT report to be completed.
22:34And whoever is found to be guilty, we will not cite by them.
22:38As per the law of the land…
22:39You made that point to me earlier also, Shirai.
22:42That is very clear from day one.
22:44Mr. Chopra, you are saying this is not about the report.
22:46Then what is it about?
22:48Is it about control and ownership?
22:50You see, if you go back a couple of years, there was this huge scam that was reported
22:57in the media over the land purchases.
22:59Yes, 2021.
23:00So, we had that scam.
23:00That brought dishonor to Bhagawan Sri Ramlala Virajman.
23:03And after that, the trust at that time was only receiving funds from within India.
23:09Later, they got the FCRA license and started receiving funds from Hindus all over the world.
23:14From every corner of the world, Hindus suddenly sprung up and started donating.
23:17Those Hindus want to know that if they have sent money in dollar, pound, euro, dirham,
23:23has it reached the trust?
23:24At what rate was it received?
23:26At what rate was it converted?
23:28What was that money used for?
23:30Was it used for anything for public purposes, for Shraddhaloos?
23:33Or did it just get deposited?
23:34Did it get used in the construction of the temple?
23:37Mr. Nipendam Mishra did an excellent job in managing the temple construction.
23:43We salute him for doing that.
23:44We have full faith in the Honorable Home Minister and Prime Minister of our country.
23:49Because they, in good faith, created this trust.
23:51But when the members were chosen, somebody else chose those members.
23:55We'd like it to be found out who chose those members.
23:57There were certain senior people from the opposing side who, prior to the mediation,
24:02visited us and other people.
24:03And made us, offered us various concessions.
24:06Because at that time, Mahanji had offered four acres of land at Mani Parwar to be given
24:11to the Muslim side in exchange for the Muslim side giving up its claim.
24:16During the mediation, I cannot get into those details because those were, we had a gag order.
24:20I have only a minute, Mr. Chopra, I have only a minute.
24:24Mr. Chopra, I have only a minute.
24:26He says that, sure.
24:29So, I want, I want Shiraj Nayar.
24:30So, essentially what we say, that the same way, the same way 145 was, was, sir, we want 145 to
24:38be implemented.
24:39We would like the central government to do, close this trust, take control of all assets, appoint a receiver.
24:46And if the central government could not do it, they could request the Honorable Supreme Court to appoint a receiver.
24:51See, yesterday, Govindev Giri Maharaji clarified everything.
24:55And the trust is open for whoever wants to come and check about their donations, whether in cash or in
25:02kind.
25:03Everything is at place.
25:05No, if you all speak over each other, we can't hear.
25:07Mr. Chopra, you, Mr. Chopra, you, Mr. Chopra, this can't be a monologue.
25:13You know, Shiraj Nayar, I want you to conclude by just saying, Mr. Chopra is raising valid points.
25:18You see, the fear is that in your, the BHP believed that they had virtually taken over this movement.
25:25And therefore, today, when the trust and your senior representatives are found to have made supervisory failures,
25:34if not anything else, surely the trust should be disbanded.
25:38And there should be a trust which should be appointed in a manner that it's not some close club of
25:43yours.
25:44This is not some close club.
25:45This is a trust in which millions of people have placed their faith.
25:49The BHP has not taken the theka for all, for whatever happens there.
25:53You'll have to open it up.
25:54You'll have to be subject to scrutiny now.
26:00Yes, Rajdeep, first of all, all statutory obligations, compliances are met.
26:05Audits are done on regular intervals.
26:07Now, yesterday, the treasurer of the trust, Sri Govindev Giri Maharaj, clearly said,
26:13whoever wants to come and check, the trust office is duty-bound to inform very clearly about the donations they
26:21have made to the trust,
26:23whether in kind also.
26:24Now, what is happening is, a temple, Garbhagra is not a museum, to place all the articles given by the
26:30donors.
26:31So, the trust is duty-bound.
26:33Now, second thing, what he is saying is about hijacking and all, this is all right now.
26:38I think it's all uncalled for.
26:41Sir, you may say.
26:42Plus, he is going for a major reforms.
26:43Three people are appointed.
26:46There are going to be major reforms.
26:48Okay, we will wait and see.
26:49Mr. Nayar.
26:49We are ourselves hurt for whatever.
26:51Okay, sir, hurt is enough.
26:53We are also hurt.
26:54Hurt must come with.
26:55Whatever wrongdoing has happened.
26:56No, no, Mr. Nayar.
26:57Mr. Nayar, now I will stop you also.
26:59Because hurt must come with accountability.
27:01And the fact is, questions are being raised by the Nirmohi Akhada and other groups now.
27:05And therefore, the VHP cannot escape responsibility.
27:08You cannot pass the buck anymore.
27:10I appreciate my guests joining me on the show today.
27:14I've run out of time.
27:15I appreciate all of you joining me.
27:17Thank you very much.
27:19Okay, I want to move from there.
27:21As I said, you're seeing now the divided Hindutva family on the issue of how to proceed further on the
27:30Ram Mandir Trust.
27:31We need to proceed further to the other big story.
27:34Because monsoon is wreaking havoc across the country at the moment.
27:37And I want to give you quick updates.
27:39Heavy rains today disrupted traffic in Gurugram.
27:42Where a section of NH48 caved in, prompting repair work traffic diversions.
27:47A school bus carrying students got stuck in a drain amid severe waterlogging, highlighting the city's recurring monsoon woes.
27:54Surat is also battling flood-like conditions after relentless rain.
27:58Road near the famous Sham Mandir on VIP roads turned into rivers.
28:02Vehicles are submerged.
28:03Commuters were stranded.
28:05Mumbai's monsoon misery is also far from over.
28:08From flooded streets in the suburb of Nala Sopara to waterlogged railway tracks.
28:12Normal life continued to be disrupted.
28:16And there was a Spider-Man who was also seen helping commuters safely navigate the flooded stretches.
28:23A three-kilometre-long traffic jam brought the Mumbai-Ahmadabad highway to a crawl after heavy rainfall triggered severe congestion
28:30on the stretch leading to the city.
28:34Cave-ins also reported in Rajasthan's Jaipur where a parked car plunged into a massive sinkhole that opened up overnight.
28:40Fortunately, no one was inside the vehicle.
28:42No injuries were reported.
28:44But there was tragedy that struck Kerala's fragile hills and Wyanard once again was at the epicentre.
28:51A devastating landslide has left at least three people dead, many others missing.
28:57Once again raising troubling questions in a region which is ecologically sensitive.
29:02State Minister T. Siddiqui, in fact, has claimed the disaster was a man-made tragedy,
29:07alleging that mud was dumped in violation of norms there, a tunnel construction site that gave way under heavy rain.
29:15Here is a report.
29:25Fifty seconds of sheer horror.
29:28Many dead, many missing after a landslide hit Kaladi in Wyanard on Tuesday.
29:34The landslide took place near a tunnel construction site near a bridge.
29:41Local residents joined the rescue efforts.
29:47A month ago, there was an order issued to remove it from there as the monsoon season was about to
29:52begin.
29:52But that was not followed and that is what led to this crisis, led to this incident,
29:56is what the government is saying, calling it a man-made disaster,
29:59not a natural disaster or natural landslide like what we witnessed in 2024.
30:04The magnitude is comparatively less, but the efforts, the focus right now is definitely
30:10on saving the last life possible from there at this point.
30:15State Minister T. Siddiqui called the disaster a man-made tragedy.
30:22After the consecutive meetings and directions, even though we have given the directions,
30:27the Hongan authorities didn't take the full responsibility of shifting the soil and mud from there.
30:36It is actually not a natural disaster, natural slide.
30:41It is actually basically a human-made slide is happened.
30:48The med department has issued a red alert in Wayanad and Kauri Kaur districts.
30:52Schools in the area will be closed tomorrow.
30:58A strong wind warning is there and then rain is continuing.
31:02And then considering the impact, it is in Wayanad district is there.
31:06In other districts also, there are many rain-related events.
31:09So that is why, considering the impact, we have issued a red alert.
31:18The site of disaster is close to Mundakai, which was nearly wiped out in a landslide in 2024.
31:26Over 250 people had died in that landslide.
31:33Environmentalists have been warning against indiscriminate construction in Wayanad,
31:38which falls in the ecologically fragile region of Western Ghats.
31:44The landslide in Kaladi is yet another wake-up call for Kerala.
31:49Vishibi Molkeji, Bureau Report, India Today.
31:57So are we facing a climate emergency?
32:00Joining me now, Dr. Roxy Matthew Cole is one of India's leading climate scientists
32:04from the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology in Pune.
32:07Appreciate your joining us there, doctor.
32:10Just want to understand, what we are seeing at the moment in the last couple of days
32:15is this huge torrential rainfall across the Western Ghats
32:20and interestingly making up for any shortfall from what was a rather dry month of June.
32:25So we had a dry month of June, a late monsoon,
32:28and now these short, sharp, heavy bursts of rain in several parts of the country.
32:33Do you see this as part of a climate emergency, part of climate changing patterns,
32:38these extreme weather conditions?
32:42You are totally right, Rajseep.
32:44In fact, we are seeing this pattern for several years.
32:48In fact, decades now.
32:50That's what our research shows.
32:52In fact, if you look at this year,
32:54we had a very weak start owing to an early, you know,
32:58riding on a climate change signal, on a global warming signal.
33:00So we had a weak start.
33:02The deficit during the month of June, the first month of the monsoon season was about up to 40%.
33:08And the last few days, especially in the last two, three days,
33:12that deficit came down to about 17 to 20%.
33:18So, which means that we are going through a phase where we are having a monsoon
33:25with long, dry spells, dry periods where there is almost no rain,
33:30and then short spells of heavy rain.
33:32And this is a very clear signature of global warming.
33:36I should say, on top of global warming,
33:38we have the effect of the El Nino in the Pacific as well,
33:41which generally weakens the monsoon winds.
33:43So we had a weak start of the monsoon.
33:45The monsoon circulation was weak.
33:48Generally, the moisture supply also was weak.
33:51But the oceans are warming.
33:52So when there are episodes, when the monsoon winds strengthen up,
33:58all that moisture from global warming dumps and powers in a few days to a few hours' time.
34:04And that's what we saw over the Western Guards, over Mumbai, parts of Maharashtra,
34:10right now happening.
34:11Even in Pune, we had heavy rain.
34:13You just mentioned Dr. El Nino,
34:16because there's been a lot of talk about El Nino across the world.
34:20This could be an El Nino year as the Pacific continues to warm.
34:24Do you see this El Nino factor affecting the monsoon this year in the July to September period?
34:30Will we now see another dry spell after having seen this torrential rain of the last few months?
34:37Some parts of North and Central India continue to have a weak monsoon.
34:42Western India getting huge rain.
34:43Are we seeing diverse extreme patterns again?
34:49Exactly.
34:50So the northern parts deficit is clearly, you know, linked to how the El Nino works.
34:57So generally, El Nino is a phenomena of warm waters over the centerline East Pacific.
35:02But since the Pacific is large and the area of warm waters also is quite, you know, large in volume,
35:10it affects the ocean atmosphere interaction, the circulation, including our monsoon circulation.
35:16So the winds, the monsoon winds that should penetrate inland towards the northern belt and all,
35:23do not penetrate inland as usual, as often during the normal years when there is no El Nino.
35:29So this time, as usual, we had a weak start.
35:34Monsoon, of course, have the wet and active phases of monsoon.
35:37The onset of monsoon itself was weak and we saw a weak progression towards the northern belt as well.
35:44In fact, the monsoon should have covered the entire part of India by now,
35:47but it hasn't covered the northwestern parts of India and insufficiently to the northern states.
35:54You know, one of the questions that often arises, though, doctor, is that these extreme weather conditions,
35:59governments say they have faced force of nature, what can we do?
36:02Or are they man-made, as is being suggested in Vyanat, because of wanton destruction of forests,
36:07the reckless construction in ecologically sensitive areas?
36:10How much of these extreme weather conditions, like in the Western Ghats,
36:14are being caused because of what we, the humans, are doing, not necessarily acts of God or nature?
36:23Great questions, Rajsteep.
36:26The extreme rains are a result of, especially the extreme rains in the volume that we see right now,
36:34are a result of global warming due to increased carbon emissions at all on a global level.
36:38But the floods, landslides, and the destruction, the disaster that we see locally are a result of,
36:47you know, local changes that we made, land use changes, development without environmental and climate assessment.
36:55And this is what we should look forward to, especially in Western Ghats,
37:00the change in forest cover, the development without considering the slope and terrain,
37:11and the extreme rains over that region.
37:14And this is the same for the Himalayas as well.
37:17So we see that this increases the soil erosion,
37:20this increases the, you know, decreases the stability of the slope and the terrain.
37:26And when extreme rains due to climate change lash over that,
37:30the soil and the mountains and the hills cannot hold on anymore.
37:33It comes down as mudslide, landslide, and flash floods,
37:37because there is no space for that water to sink in and be absorbed.
37:42And this is the state of our rivers as well.
37:45When that water comes downstream, we see that the rivers are squeezed or encroached.
37:51And this is the same for whether we take a city like Mumbai or, you know, other areas as well.
37:59Okay. Doctor, you know, in a sense, we wish we could carry this forward.
38:04You can watch the entire discussion we had on our website.
38:07But I appreciate you joining me on the show here tonight.
38:10Thanks very much. We are indeed in times of a climate emergency.
38:14The world is talking about a new card in football, and it's called the Trump card.
38:19FIFA's decision to suspend the red card to American striker Follarin Balogun
38:24has triggered a worldwide outrage.
38:27But the decision did not help the U.S. much on the field as they lost to Belgium 1-4.
38:31Either way, there are question marks over the way the U.S. president
38:36has tried to dictate terms to the footballing world.
38:39Take a look.
38:40So I saw the play, and I'm a person that loves sports and was a good athlete.
38:47And I understand sports really well, really well.
38:52And that wasn't a foul.
38:54That wasn't even an infraction.
38:56That was two guys running full speed that happened to crash into each other.
38:59You can't take your foot and properly place it on somebody else's foot when you're going,
39:05no, these were two great athletes that got tangled up.
39:11And this referee, who is a little bit suspect, if you check his past, it would have been unfair.
39:21But when they take your best player, or just about, they have some great players,
39:25and they say you can't play, that's very unfair.
39:30Yes, I asked for a review by FIFA.
39:35There is a new card in football, the Trump card,
39:38which supersedes even the red,
39:40as stunned football fans across the world found out this week.
39:49Why not them?
39:51Why not Belgium?
39:53Donald Trump may have successfully gotten USA striker
39:57for Laren Balogun's red card overturned,
39:59but it was Belgium who had the last laugh
40:02in their round of 16 game against the hosts.
40:06The USA didn't really take charge, and Belgium did.
40:10To make the matter even more ironic,
40:12Belgium ran right against the USA and Balogun.
40:15Seen by many as the key player in the American side,
40:18did not even manage to get on the score sheet.
40:21We're going to be in trouble here.
40:23It's a shocker of a goal from the co-host's point of view.
40:28And Romelu Lukaku, who scored the fourth goal for Belgium,
40:32celebrated the occasion with a Trumpian dance.
40:37And he helps the Belgians make their way to the quarter-finals.
40:41To rub salt into the proverbial wounds,
40:44Belgium then tweeted,
40:45Overturn this, after the match was done,
40:48taking a not-so-subtle jab at their adversaries
40:51and serving a reminder that sporting battles are won on the field.
40:57It was a tournament to be proud of for the co-hosts,
41:00but the manner of Balogun's red card being overturned
41:03will doubtless dominate the discourse far more than
41:06their on-field performance in the coming days.
41:10As for Belgium, their golden generation members
41:13are either ageing or retired,
41:15but they showed that they still have what it takes to get big results
41:19even when the tide is against them.
41:22Sports Bureau, India Today.
41:28So is it time to show Donald Trump the red card?
41:31That's the question I want to raise.
41:33Joining me now, Nikhil Naas,
41:34Consulting Sports Editor here at TV Today.
41:37Alan Linkman, Political Analyst
41:39and Distinguished Professor of History
41:40at American University,
41:42writing about Donald Trump for a while.
41:44A. Scott Bolden, Criminal Defence Attorney,
41:47former chair of the D.C. Democratic Party.
41:49Appreciate both of you joining us.
41:51I want to come to you, Mr. Linkman, first.
41:53You've been very scathing about Donald Trump over the years.
41:56Do you believe that he again crossed a certain red line
41:59he deserves a red card
42:00for trying to interfere in a global event like this?
42:04He deserves a red card
42:06far more than the soccer player did.
42:09This is typical Trump egomania and overreaching.
42:15Remember, this is a president who has said,
42:18uniquely among presidents in office,
42:21I can do anything I want.
42:24It doesn't matter.
42:26There are no constraints
42:27from other branches of government,
42:29from the courts of law.
42:32I am akin to the sun king,
42:35Louis XIV of France,
42:37who reportedly said,
42:38I am the state.
42:41So it is totally consistent
42:43with how Trump operates
42:45for him to belly flop
42:47and exert undue,
42:50I think,
42:51illicit political influence
42:54on the World Cup.
42:56Secondly,
42:57it also illustrates
42:58another trait of Donald Trump,
43:01which is his overweening ego,
43:04you know,
43:04claiming how much he knows
43:06about sports.
43:08You know,
43:08he claimed he knows more about war
43:11than the generals.
43:12We've seen what a disaster
43:13that is with the fiasco
43:15of the war in Iran.
43:17He claims to be
43:18a stable genius,
43:20claims to know more about
43:22building than anyone else,
43:24even though he hasn't built
43:25anything worthwhile
43:26in decades.
43:27He just lays out his name.
43:30And I do believe,
43:31and I've been involved
43:32in competitive sports
43:33for more than 60 years,
43:36I'm still competing,
43:37at age 79,
43:39that what Trump did
43:40put a pall
43:42over the U.S. team.
43:44The U.S. team
43:45did not operate
43:47as expected
43:48and as they had
43:50in the past.
43:51They were slow.
43:52They were confused.
43:54They didn't follow
43:56what should be
43:57a winning plan.
43:59And I do think
44:00that what Donald Trump did
44:02weighed heavily on them.
44:04I call it
44:04the Trump curse.
44:07The Trump curse.
44:08A. Scott Bolton,
44:09are you as harsh
44:10on the U.S. president?
44:11What if he is a sports fan
44:12and felt that,
44:14you know,
44:14as a sports fan,
44:16he carried the weight
44:17of the White House
44:18and tried to get
44:19a red card rescinded?
44:23Dead on.
44:23I don't have a whole lot
44:24to add.
44:26Even he and I
44:27share the same first name.
44:28But let me just say this.
44:31If you look at the play,
44:34and we're all sports fans,
44:35and I'm always pulling
44:37for the Americans
44:38and FIFA and the Olympics,
44:39right?
44:40But there's a certain
44:41fairness about it.
44:42What's appropriate?
44:43And what I would only add
44:45is to capture
44:47how outrageous
44:49this is,
44:50whereby the head of state
44:52of the United States,
44:53who is hosting
44:55the FIFA games,
44:56who FIFA gave
44:58a World Peace Award to,
45:00that the president
45:01of the state,
45:02not the coach of the team,
45:03but the president,
45:04calls the head of FIFA
45:05and inherent in his conversation,
45:08says,
45:09I asked him to look at it.
45:10Well,
45:10the only reason you ask him
45:11to look at it
45:12is because you're conveying,
45:13you not only disagree with it,
45:15but you want him to change it,
45:17and you're the host country.
45:19Inherent in that conversation
45:20is advocating
45:22that that red card
45:24be pulled or suspended
45:26when the president
45:27was not even at the game.
45:28You can look at the video
45:30and see how damaging
45:31this foot-to-ankle piece was.
45:35They were both
45:36going for the ball,
45:37but if you notice
45:38the American bulldogan,
45:40he has his hand
45:41across the chest
45:43of the other player
45:44on top of hitting his ankle,
45:46which could have been
45:47very dangerous
45:48in and of itself.
45:49Now, listen,
45:49I'm not trying to second-guess
45:51the red card,
45:51but I wasn't there
45:53and Donald Trump wasn't there.
45:54The referee was there,
45:55and there's no prior bad acts
45:57on the part of this referee.
45:58FIFA came out
45:59and defended him.
46:01Okay, you know,
46:01Nikhil,
46:02while the attack is on Trump,
46:04what about FIFA itself?
46:05They seem very craven.
46:06They seem to have
46:07been virtually ready
46:09to accept what Donald Trump said.
46:11So what if you're
46:12the host country?
46:12Surely FIFA is there
46:14to protect the game,
46:15not to protect the interests
46:16of one country
46:17or Donald Trump?
46:18Well, you're absolutely right,
46:19but Rajdeep,
46:20what's happened
46:21really doesn't surprise me.
46:22For one,
46:24you know,
46:24FIFA by itself
46:25haven't covered themselves
46:26in glory
46:27with lots of corruption
46:28scandals there.
46:29Things have come to this
46:31that UEFA,
46:31which is again
46:32another corrupt organization,
46:33has come out on X
46:35and criticized this.
46:37Sepp Blatter,
46:37who was himself involved
46:39in multiple corruption scandals,
46:41has come out and said,
46:42no, this is not done.
46:43But as I said,
46:44this is not unprecedented.
46:45I'm going to talk about
46:46this particular World Cup.
46:47Cristiano Ronaldo
46:48got a red card
46:49before this World Cup started.
46:51That red card
46:52would have meant
46:52three-mat suspension for him.
46:54You know what FIFA did?
46:55Because they could not
46:57start this FIFA World Cup
46:58without Cristiano Ronaldo
47:00playing those first two games
47:01for Portugal.
47:02So they've suspended
47:03his sentence
47:03so that he can serve it
47:05at a time
47:05after the World Cup is over.
47:07This happened
47:07at this World Cup.
47:08So it's not unprecedented.
47:10And of course,
47:10corruption scandals
47:11have been there
47:12for a long time.
47:13There is an Article 47
47:15which they can invoke
47:16and that is exactly
47:17what they've done.
47:18But that only happens
47:19if a referee
47:19has made a major error.
47:21Error in the sense that
47:22he's given the red card
47:23to the wrong player.
47:24Not basis of his decision.
47:26That decision cannot be questioned
47:27and FIFA never interferes.
47:29But they've invoked that,
47:30of course,
47:31you know,
47:31pandering to the President's ego.
47:33The interesting thing though,
47:35Mr. Lichtman,
47:35in a country where football
47:36is not the number one sport,
47:38huge crowds have gathered.
47:40Do you think
47:40the public
47:41is with Donald Trump
47:42on this issue?
47:43That here is the President
47:44of the United States
47:45siding with an American player?
47:48I don't think
47:49the American people
47:50are with him on that.
47:52You know,
47:52Donald Trump claims
47:53to be the most popular,
47:55the greatest President ever.
47:57In fact,
47:58if you look at
47:58not one survey,
48:00but the consensus
48:01of surveys,
48:03he is the least
48:05esteemed President
48:06at this point
48:07in a Presidential term
48:09in modern history.
48:12No, but on this issue,
48:13this is not,
48:13but on the issue
48:14of a sport,
48:15would Americans
48:17like the President
48:18to stand up for America,
48:19to stand up for the flag,
48:20to stand up for their players?
48:22He's not standing up
48:23for America.
48:24He's not standing up
48:25for the flag.
48:26If America means anything,
48:28it means fairness,
48:30justice,
48:31fair play.
48:32What Donald Trump
48:33has done
48:34is just the opposite,
48:37using his power
48:38as the most powerful person
48:40in the world
48:41to leap into
48:43a situation
48:44which he has
48:45no business
48:46getting involved in.
48:47Sports should be
48:49free of political
48:51interference.
48:52Once you taint it
48:53with political interference,
48:55you undermine
48:56the entire sport.
48:59And as I said,
49:00I do think
49:01what Donald Trump did
49:02not only
49:03has disillusioned
49:04a lot of Americans,
49:05but I think
49:06it hurt the team.
49:09Very difficult
49:10to explain.
49:11the terrible performance
49:12of that team.
49:14Okay.
49:15And we could also argue
49:16that Belgium
49:16were by far
49:17the better side.
49:18But a quick final word
49:19from you,
49:20Scott Bolden,
49:21because sports
49:21and politics
49:22in an ideal world
49:23should not mix,
49:24but we've seen it
49:24in this country,
49:25between India and Pakistan
49:26on cricket fields
49:27it mixes.
49:28We saw it
49:28during the Cold War
49:29when Olympics
49:31were boycotted.
49:31Do you believe
49:32that politicians
49:34like to push themselves
49:35on center stage
49:37whenever there's
49:38a global sporting event?
49:39Donald Trump
49:40is no different
49:40to many others.
49:41He may not be different,
49:43but he oversteps
49:44his bounds
49:45and extends his bounds
49:47as an executive
49:48beyond anything
49:50in history
49:50of this United States
49:52of America.
49:53Listen,
49:54you know,
49:54the one thing
49:55we haven't talked about
49:56is with this
49:58red card suspension,
49:59had the U.S. won
50:01and beat Belgium
50:02and that Beligon
50:03had been a star
50:04in that game,
50:06if, right,
50:07what would we be
50:08talking about
50:09and what would
50:10Americans be feeling?
50:11I'll be honest with you,
50:13I would not have been
50:14feeling great about it
50:15because it's one thing
50:16to win at all costs,
50:17but it's another thing
50:18to win unfairly.
50:19And you can't name me
50:21another president
50:23or head of state
50:25that has personally
50:26put his thumb
50:28on the button,
50:29right,
50:29or on the scale
50:30in an effort
50:31to support
50:32his national team.
50:34It's not his place
50:35to do that.
50:36It would be the coach
50:37or the owner
50:38of the team
50:38and so forth
50:39and so on
50:39who would have
50:40filed an appeal.
50:42Here,
50:43poetic justice,
50:44if you will,
50:45or the gods above us
50:46somehow figured it out
50:48and they didn't play well.
50:50To my disappointment,
50:51they didn't play well
50:52and Belgium won
50:55notwithstanding
50:56the Trump card.
50:57You know,
50:58what's going to happen
50:59is now there'll be
50:59probably a tariff
51:00on Belgian chocolates.
51:01That's just one of the jokes
51:02that's doing the rounds,
51:03but I appreciate
51:05my guests joining us
51:07and speaking their minds
51:08out so clearly.
51:09Thank you all very much
51:10for joining me.
51:10Rajiv, just 10 seconds.
51:11Yeah, very quickly,
51:1210 seconds.
51:13I'm just going to sum up.
51:13The only good thing
51:14to have come out
51:15of all of this
51:15is that finally
51:16President Trump
51:17stood up for
51:19a son of two
51:20African immigrants.
51:21That's one way
51:22of making America
51:23great again.
51:24Ah, yes.
51:24Nice, nice one.
51:25Okay, on that note,
51:27let me tell you
51:28what our viewer response is.
51:29Trump card versus red card.
51:30Shiva, SSR99 says,
51:32Trump card was ridiculous
51:34that way.
51:34Had our Prime Minister
51:35intervened
51:36for all the wrong
51:36dismisses of Thindulkar,
51:38then maybe he would have
51:39scored at least another
51:4010th to 15th centuries
51:41more.
51:42Narendra Modi
51:43was not there
51:44when Sachin was there,
51:45but you could argue
51:45that could have happened
51:46to a Virat
51:47or a Shubhman.
51:48Parag Hadez says,
51:49why blame Trump?
51:50Blame FIFA
51:51for listening to him.
51:52FIFA has lost
51:52its credibility.
51:53Trump cannot be expected
51:55to do anything sensible.
51:56Santosh writes,
51:57if Trump can revoke
51:59a red card,
51:59next FIFA may need
52:00two referees,
52:01one on the pitch,
52:02one in the Oval Office.
52:03Nice one there.
52:04Sujit Sansgiri says,
52:05it was a bad deal.
52:06He looked bad interfering
52:07and the US looked bad
52:08getting thrashed
52:09by Belgium.
52:10Let me give you
52:11a my take as well
52:12on this.
52:13As always,
52:14I feel strongly about sports.
52:15It's an emotional bond.
52:16Donald Trump
52:17has a deserved reputation
52:19of being a big bully,
52:20a man-child
52:21who believes
52:21he can get away
52:22with bad behaviour
52:23or set his own rules.
52:25Which is why
52:25it came as no surprise
52:26that he pushed FIFA
52:27to rescind the red card
52:29given to a US player
52:30during the ongoing
52:31World Cup football.
52:32What did come as a surprise
52:34was FIFA's
52:34abject capitulation.
52:36The body which runs
52:37the world's most
52:37widely played sport
52:38has not for the first time
52:40shown itself
52:40to lack moral courage
52:42and stand up
52:42for the sport's ethos.
52:44Yet despite Trump
52:45getting the rules bent,
52:47the good news was
52:48that Belgium
52:48thumped the US
52:494-1.
52:50Sports, my friends,
52:51is a great leveller.
52:53Trump may have tried
52:53to play big boss
52:54but on the sports field
52:56what matters
52:56is who scores the goals
52:58not who has
52:59more superpower leverage.
53:00Trump won't change.
53:02Hopefully,
53:02FIFA will.
53:04Okay,
53:05just about enough time
53:06to leave you
53:07with our image
53:08of the day
53:09because 6th July
53:10saw the curtain
53:11not just on the US team
53:12but also the end
53:13of the World Cup journey
53:14of one of the greats
53:15of our game.
53:16Cristiano Ronaldo
53:17of Portugal
53:18bid an emotional farewell
53:19after his team
53:21lost to Spain
53:221-0.
53:23Playing in his 6th
53:24and last World Cup
53:25itself a record,
53:27Cristiano was seen
53:27in tears
53:28after the final
53:29whistle.
53:30He was inconsolable
53:31after the heart-breaking loss.
53:34Ronaldo remains
53:35the only player
53:36in the world
53:36to score a goal
53:37in 6th World Cup.
53:38Maybe he too
53:39was a bit larger
53:41than life.
53:43Maybe he
53:43perhaps
53:44needed to step away
53:46sooner
53:47rather than later.
53:49Thanks for watching.
53:50You stay well.
53:51Stay safe.
53:52Good night.
53:52Goodbye.
53:53Jayin.
53:55Namaskar.
53:56Shubhraatri.
